Ok, we were looking for a brunch in the Williams/James CIty (it is actually in James City) and this place did not disappoint. The food was excellent. The menu was excellent. Not a single bad thing to say about any of it. The waiter was outstanding. Management came over twice to see if we were happy with everything. I would have to say that this was the 2nd best brunch I have ever been to, period. It might be the best considering the price. The experience was so good, I am seriously thinking about getting a timeshare in the area. Very nice place. Our sever was named Brandon. He was very nice and knowledgeable. I had the filet and Lobster tail. Both were cooked perfectly. My husband had the Oscar9. He stated that it was delicious. We both had a house salad with their house dressing which was a basil vinegarette type. Overall, the food was delicious. The reason their not getting 5 stars is because we made reservations and when we arrived they were not ready.( they open at 4:30 for dinner service) and then they sat us in the back. My family and I were on vacation, visiting from NJ, for my fathers 65 birthday. We were originally looking at places along the river but after reading the positive reviews for Opus 9, I made reservations for the seven of us. Our waiter Cody was extremely pleasant and friendly. After taking our drink orders, Cody accidentally dropped a full glass of milk, a glass of water and some beer on my whole right side. I was completely soaked and smelled like milk and beer. My brother-in-law also got a bunch of water right in his shoe! Cody was extremely embarrassed and very upset. He apologized no less than 15 times for the rest of the meal. Being a former server, I've done similar things in the past, stuff happens. Here is what pissed me off the most: The Maitre D came over and with a half grin on his face asked me if I needed any more napkins to dry myself off. Never once did he apologize to any of us. The only person that looked like he cared was Cody. At the completion of our meal, which was approximately $550 with tip, not one item was comped. We were not looking for a free meal, but like I said before, my wife and I used to work in the restaurant business and a family member owns several upscale steakhouses in New Jersey. If that was any other upscale place in NJ, our drinks or desserts would have been comped at the very minimum!! I left Opus 9 livid! Like I said before this was my fathers 65th birthday dinner, which I had to sit through soaking wet! My take on the meal: The fresh baked bread at the table was excellent. The appetizer tower was very good except for the marinated mushrooms which were too thick, as was the batter on the onion rings. The shrimp, tuna, and calamari was out of this world. The iceberg salad was very bland and watery. Absolutely no flavor. We had to load it with salt and pepper. The seafood bisque was top three I've ever had! The filet in our opinion was not very flavorful. None of the steak cuts were explained to us which is usually standard in a high class place. My father had the boneless ribeye, which was served perfect temperature and was very flavorful. The seafood trio was also excellent and I would highly recommend it. It's a shame about the drinks being spilled. I don't blame the waiter at all. I'm extremely upset how the situation was handled. My opinion is this place is trying to be high end but still needs some practice. I'm sure there are other places in the area that you are probably better off going to! read more

I came here for my birthday to be greeted by a friendly waiter at first only to be ignored later on and when the food arrived it was cold. We waited and waited for him to return to do the check back and I had to get up and find someone to help us. (That should not be the case) Both my food and my moms food was cold. She ate hers though. By far, this restaurant has the best service of any restaurant I've ever visited. The moment you walk in the door you are greeted warming, and it only gets better from there. The servers greet you by name, and you can tell that customer service is the #1 priority of this establishment. I would come back just for the service, but in addition the food is excellent. I've seen a few people mentioned that the temperature of their steaks was not too their satisfaction, but it is beyond me how that could ever happen. They make a big deal of having you check your steak when it is delivered to the table, so if you get a steak that's not to your liking it's because you didn't say anything when they had you check. Our server's name was Brittany, and she did a wonderful job. If you are looking for a high-end steakhouse experience, then look no further...this is it! read more

This is the restaurant you want for a great meal. The price is high, but in this case, you get what you pay for. The food was excellent. The service was great. Amanda was our server and I would ask for her again if I got the chance to go back. She was very attentive and even chatted and joked with us a bit. Great customer service skills. I had the filet mignon with lobster tail. The steak was tender and juicy and came perfectly medium. The lobster was on point as well. My wife had the crab cakes, which are simple but so good. They are all crab, hardly any mustard seed, which is their only filler. Excellent taste. We also both had a potato side (garlic mash and au gratin) which were nice. The desserts were heavenly. My wife had the fresh berries and creme anglaise, while I had the chocolate concerto plus. My cake was baked warm and had a gooey chocolate and caramel center with a side of ice cream. Basically one of the best meals we have ever had in our lives. Worth the money spent on our anniversary. Great ambiance and rather quiet on a weeknight as well. We had been told that Opus9 was THE steakhouse ~ their brunch with a prime rib carving station was supposed to be excellent. Our reservation was set for 11am.. they open at 11.. we were among the first people seated. Our waiter took a very long time to do everything.. he didn't come back to check on us until I was forced to ask another of the waitstaff to find him. The food was very disappointing, very limited selections and the setup was absurd. One man was manning the carving station, making the omelettes and the waffles too. The prime rib was dry, medium at best and you needed a steak knife to cut it! The chef was asked by our waiter to carve a slice of the rarest prime rib he had.. it was barely medium rare. How does a top rated steakhouse not have rare prime rib at their very first seating of the day? Plus the biscuits and gravy were mixed into the dessert section.. all set on top of the bar.. far too high up for vertically challenged people like myself to take advantage of it without spilling. Very poorly designed flow and again the selection was limited and portions were cut into miniature sizes. We will not be returning.. read more

We went here for my grandmother's 80th birthday last night and it was really good. They put us in a private room, which made the experience even better. My aunt and uncle are regulars here, so she took care of a lot of the ordering. We started with the seafood sampler appetizer which had spicy shrimp, regular cocktail shrimp, crab cakes, and scallops. My personal favorites were the spicy shrimp and the scallops. The scallops were huge! I ate half of one quite happily. It was perfectly cooked and practically melted in my mouth. I skipped the salad course and was glad I did because they were also huge. I opted for the 8oz filet mignon with bernaise and au gratin potatoes. I ordered my steak medium well, probably to the horror of all the steak afficianados out there, but I was very happy with the done-ness. It was still tender, juicy, and devilishly tasty. The bernaise added that little something extra I was looking for. By that point I was so stuffed, I barely put a dent in my au gratin potatoes, even though they were also very good. I would definitely suggest this to someone if they're feeling rich, a little dressed up, and looking for a good meal. Went here for dinner over Easter weekend. As soon as we were seated, our waiter, Dylan, was very attentive and very pleasant. We ordered the porterhouse steak, cooked medium rare and it came out lovely. We ordered the caramelized onions and mushrooms demi-glaze which was thick and savory and a great accompaniment. The only thing that we didn't really enjoy was the side of broccoli which was steamed to the point of being overcooked and the mound of butter that was slathered on was too excessive. We came here to celebrate my husband's birthday during our trip to Williamsburg. The food was fantastic -- he got the filet & lobster tail and I got the filet. We both got mashed potatoes for our side, and then shared the cream of corn side. It was an expensive meal, but the food was worth it for us. The service was a bit slow (we were there for 1.5 hours), and it wasn't terribly busy ... but we weren't in a rush, so it wasn't a huge bother. The other off-putting thing was when they asked us to cut into the middle of our steaks to check the temperature. We have been to a lot of higher end steakhouses and have never been asked to do this. This place is located in New Town area. A fine steakhouse with prime steaks. Baked potatoes were a little under cooked, steaks were perfect. I had the bone in ribeye cowboy cut. Jaime had her filet, her way, and she said it was perfect also. The creamed corn was buttery, rich, creamy with Parmesan cheese shredded on the top. The bourbon selection was very good, I had a double shot of Jefferson 15 at $18 a shot, well worth it. They have a great wine list also. Please look this place up when in Williamsburg, VA. read more

Had great recommendations for us and really explained the menu well. My Opus 9 filet was cooked to perfection and the flavor a where amazing. Everything comes together in such harmony but also stands alone with such flavor. My husband had the Rib Eye and I had a bite and it was perfectly seared and seasoned. We wanted good steak, and found it here at Opus 9! As another reviewer mentioned, the atmosphere is very nice. We had a party of 6, and enjoyed a semi-private table. The service was spotty - at times attentive, but other times we struggled to get our waiter's attention, and a side item was forgotten. The steaks were wonderful! In all, we ordered filet mignon and ribeyes, 'regular' (without sauce or extra seasoning). They were served on scorching hot platters with some drawn butter. I had a 16 oz. ribeye which I was concerned about finishing, but it was so good I couldn't leave any behind. Rather than loading the meat with spices to give it flavor, the meat was very lightly seasoned (I added some salt to mine) to allow the beef flavor to shine. This was one of the best ribeye steaks I've ever had. There was just enough fat within the meat unlike other steaks I've had where it seems a quarter of the steak is fat. Everyone loved (and finished) their meal, and thought it was worth it, even considering the small filet was over $30.00. If you're in Williamsburg and looking for a great steak, get a little dressed up and make a special evening out of it at Opus 9! read more

The macaroni and cheese was bland. The creamed spinach as basically a dip. Based on tips from our hotel concierge and fellow Yelp reviewers, my boyfriend and I went to Opus 9 for Sunday brunch during our weekend visit to Williamsburg. We were told that the quality of food would be just as great as at dinnertime, but at much less price. We were pleased that Opus 9 lived up to the hype. Sunday brunch was buffet-style with many great offerings, plus chocolate fondue dippings and a carving station. The prime rib and ham were excellent, as were the lobster mac & cheese, fried chicken with white gravy, potato salad, crabcake, and the smoked salmon (accompanied by capers and cream cheese). I did not love the eggs benedict, however. They also had a made-to-order omelet station, which we did not take advantage of, however great it looked and smelled. There just was not enough room to fit in everything I wanted. Loved the waffles and other sweets on the table. And everything was just $20/ person! Our waitress (Ashley?) was friendly and helpful and took our 10% off coupon without judgment. They were able to seat us right away, around 11:00, even though we did not have reservations. Luckily the place did not fill up until shortly after we arrived. Parking was a breeze, as there are free spaces right in the shopping center. Fantastic steak - you really get what you pay for! The pecan bourbon Brie appetizer was divine! The combination of flavors was spot-on & it was more than enough for 2 to share. We aren't big eaters so we shared the New York strip Au poivre, and it was great. Hubby added a side of caramalized mushrooms & onions & it was plenty & great with the steak too. Kind of disappointed...will explain why. Called for a reservation on a Friday evening...was told "we are really busy". Set a reservation using Open Table. No problem. The good? Ryan was an excellent server. Polite, attentive and knowledgeable. The seafood bisque was the most unique presentation of soup: a big lump of crabmeat on a plate, with Ryan pouring a tureen of bisque around it. And it was amazingly delicious. The bad? How can a steakhouse claim to be one when they cannot distinguish levels of cooking a steak that they themselves say? Ordered a filet mid rare: Ryan was emphatic that mid rare was a cool red center. Agreed: filet came out mid well. Sent it back only to have one come out quickly with the manager saying "that's the advantage of being busy. We have steaks waiting on the grill"....one cut into the filet and while less well done than the other, it was still mid well. The manager said "it's pink. That's what we are looking for"...pink is medium to medium well, not what we ordered. If an establishment sells $50 filets, pre-cooking them is poor form. I won't return. Great venue but really put off when we didn't eat the soup that was so overpowering with too many dried jalapeños in Adobe sauce. Killed the fresh tomato flavors of the Gazpacho. Rather than complain we didn't but left most of it. Waiter asked how it was and we said terrible. We bought a$100 bottle of wine steaks and dessert but they left the $12 on for the soup. Just left a bad taste in my mouth that they don't get true hospitality. Also everyone's steaks at tables around us came out rarer than wanted. Again a safe way to run a steakhouse as you can always cook them more but most just accepted a rarer steak than wanted. For $48 get a cook that knows punk vs red. They have good happy hour pricing on drinks ($5 glasses of wine, select martini specials, etc) and some of the best damn steak nachos I have ever had.
