There should be an option for ZERO stars. One star is still too good for O&R. Had to get my whole electrical panel replaced, new fuses and everything. The service company completed their work in the time they said they would and was told by O&R that someone would return at a specific time to turn the electricity back on. That was total BS!!! Two calls to customer service later I get a rep by the name of Celina that seriously needs more training in customer service. Her attitude was just as poor as their regular service. I work for a utility company so I speak objectively when saying O & R is near the bottom when it comes to service, costs, and customer service. Constant power outages, brown outs, rates continue to rise but without any representation in terms of the aforementioned fields. I have been without power now for 12 hours and there is literally nobody on the ground, and since there are not a ton of ongoing outages on the map it is safe to assume O & R didn't want to spend overtime money to give (over)paying customers their service back until it suited their financial wants. Literally O & R is one of my top reasons for wanting to move. Update: our power came back on after 13 hours. The fix literally took a single crew about 10-15 mins to complete so everything I said about this company I double down on. I gave him the business name and there was silence. I repeated the business name and he said "I cannot confirm nor deny" Then there was silence. Then he hung up. I called in today because a delivery truck accidentally pulled the electric wire off my house. Literally 40 minutes later a crew of 3 great Men showed up at my home and reattached the wires and took care of the issue immediately. They were so professional and likeable and really went above and beyond in their work they did onsite for me. I am extremely grateful for their service and overall concern. Just awesome. If I could give O & R less than one star, I would. My sister lives in NY and has the unfortunate experience of having to deal with O & R. She is 83 YO and just lost her husband on 1/6/22. She had a gas leak in the cellar today and had to call for service. The tech turned the gas off and she had to pay for a plumber to come in and fix the leak. The plumber fixed the leak and when she called to have the tech come back and turn the gas on they refused saying she had to have an exterminator come in before they turned the gas back on because the tech is afraid of spiders. She's an 83 year old widow without any heat in freezing temperatures. Shameful. read more

I had a terrible experience with O and R today. I went home for lunch to find out they had shut off the gas to make a repair. They left a note for me to call them so they could turn it back on and relight the pilot lights inside. So I called them, and they said they'd come by sometime today. I told them I had to go back to work. I guess they thought I'd just not return to my job today. A few hours later an OandR guy called from my driveway. He was upset I wasn't there so he could turn my gas back on. I couldn't believe he was upset with me. They could have made a service appointment or at least gave me a call so I could plan to have somebody there today. Unreal. Until today I've always had good experiences with OandR. I recently noticed on my bill a $1.53 charge for billing; a billing charge. I contacted O&R to ask why the charge. Think about it, how does a customer pay a bill if the don't receive one? So I would think a bill is necessary for payment. Otherwise, how can I pay a bill if I am not notified how much I am to pay. But to be charge a fee to have a bill issued is absolutely illogical and ludicrous. I walk / run in the O&R area. I am a senior with 10's of thousands of miles logged on these roads. In good and bad weather (really bad weather sometimes) . I have seen times where O&R crews worked to restore and guard the electric power lines. These folks deserve our respect. For the record, COVID has NOTHING to do with this review. Tropical storm Isaias wreaked havoc in my area, o differently from most, however this company is NEVER prepared. My power had been out since Tuesday , 8/4 @ 11a. Unable to easily read their outage map, customer service was rude & would not offer a restoration date, and to top it off, my 13 yo daughter is stuck home. Out of all the companies I have visited in the Spring Valley/Monsey area, Orange and Rockland Utilities has the worst, most rudest customer service/security team imaginable. They roll their eyes at you, never greet you with a smile, and practically ignore you. Every time I have to visit, I dread it. The recruiter for this company has to do a better job of picking people that have to deal with customers and outsiders and not just take anyone off the street. Do better... I give O&R ZERO STARS! I have had nothing but issues with my billing since I moved into my house just over a year ago. I thought it was fixed after I never got my first bill after being in my home 2 months and i called to resolve it. Then a few months later i got nearly $1000 bill. Seriously! Threats of turning off my power even though it was their error. I have a supposed smart meter that never seems to read my meter every month. I have to call every month to get my charges and they always tell me next month I should be fine. Still nothing. If I had a choice in companies I would switch in a heart beat. I've wasted countless hours on phone calls. Sent emails and still not resolved. Told supervisors would look into and nothing. Not even a credit for my inconvenience of having to call constantly. This review has nothing to do with COVID and it was a long time coming. I have never in my life experienced so many power outages in a year as I have with this company that I apparently have no choice but to use (I am in Ringwood). I understand that in extreme cases like Superstorm Sandy (1 month for restoration) the damage was bad, though my family who lives in Wanaque had power back after 1 day (they have a different company). My house was the ABSOLUTE LAST to get power back (although the larger homes just down the road had power days before) and the rumors that they cater to wealthy clients first seems to be true. In my neighborhood, everyone has wells and pumps instead of city water which means that when there is no power, there is no water. This also means a plumber will have to be called once the power is restored as the pumps often lose their prime after being off so long. Getting a generator at this time is not financially feasible for me. Just recently with tropical storm Isiasis (a single day storm), my power has been off since Monday 8/3. It is now Saturday 8/8. For 2 days, there was no restoration time listed on the website. (When I simply check the status of my account, I have to complete one of those CAPTCHA puzzles so they know I am not a bot. Why they have this security measure is beyond me, but checking becomes an annoying chore.) The past few days, it has said that power will be restored 'tomorrow at 11pm'. Shortly before that time, it rolls over to the next day at 5pm. then the next day at 11pm. Then the next day at 11pm. For all of these days, the number of customers without power displayed on the outage map has not gone down by even a single customer. The customer service line is a joke. No one answers, or there are convenient disconnects, or when you do get someone for all the help you receive from them you may as well be shouting down a rabbit hole. A new company that set up to compete with O&R would see a flood of new customers (me at the head of the line) who would be grateful for even a slight improvement in service. They are never prepared for storms. They have no intention of burying lines in tree-heavy areas, so these problems will never, ever be resolved under their business model. They are despicable and should be replaced, but as they are a Monopoly in the area I do not see this happening soon. read more

To be honest I haven't had a worst customer service experience Dan with this company. They hang up on you when they don't like what you have to say. They ask you to take a survey and when you are willing to take the survey and give a negative review they hang up on you like they didn't hear it. I tried to get my service shut on I had to call three different times and was on hold for over an hour all together. I finally almost got it done and while the woman was processing it we got disconnected and I had to call and do it all over again. You would think that they would call me back once you got that far. But no. Then the last person I spoke with apparently caught something. The other two people didn't and wanted me to pay three months worth of the previous owners bill which is just crazy. His only explanation was I'm sorry that the other two people didn't catch this. this is the only service I can get in the area that I moved to. But to be hung up on multiple times especially when I'm trying to take a survey and give you guys advice about what you should be doing differently. ABSOLUTELY WORST COMPANY TO CONTACT. They are rude on the phone, and did not listen when I ask for someone to check our meter. Terrible. Our electric bill was almost $400 this month! When they finally sent a technician (who was the only nice part about the company) pieces were falling out of the meter when he took it off the panel. There was a draw that was sucking power and costing us a lot of money. They shut off my electric and two days later I am still waiting for this new meter to arrive and be placed in. Since we have well water, no electric means no running water, no flushing toilets, no showers, no water for our animals. Orange & Rockland has to be a major contender for the WORST utility company in America. They were totally unprepared for last weekend's snowstorm - which was bad enough as you'd think a major utility company would have alll sorts of contingency plans for a major power outage. Orange and Rockland was caught with their electronic pants down: Not enough personnel and, obviously NO plans to deal with an emergency of this scope. The day of the strom, there was no one even answering their phones. They provide a number to report outages - no one answers, no voicemail - the calls rolled into a rapid dial tone. The next day an automated outgoing message responded and said that they were working on the rpoblem and expected power to be restored the following day- on Monday. Following the prompts to speak to a live person resulted in a disconnect. Monday power was NOT restored and no crews were an yhwere to be seen- ANYWHERE. Monday's automated outgoing message told uspower would be restored by midnight Tuesday. Needless to say, this did not happen. Calling their 'emergency outage' number and suffering an endless, useless autmated outgoing message and going throuhg endless voice prompts, we were finally able to reac a live person who assured us we were 'in the cue' and a crew was being dispatched and power would be on by 8 PM Wednesday. It is now Thursday afternoon. After numerous call to O&R by me and my neighbors, power has still not been restored. While we understand the scope of this outage - there is NO excuse for O&R not to be able to provide accurate information to their customers. There is NO excuse fot O&R to be giving out false and misleading information. Adding insult to injury, their endless outgoing message that you have to suffer when you call their 'emergency' number makes you listen to lies about how many personnel andcrews they have out working, that they are working 'around the clock' (a blatant lie) AND (get this), wonderful, generous O&R is providing free ice at various locations. FREE ICE!! It is freezing out at night, our homes are freezing, refrigerated food spoiled days ago and the geniuses at Orange and Rockland are giving their cold, suffering customers FREE ICE!! Not batteries, fashlights, lamp oil, generators or even fire wood - FREE ICE!! The moron at O&R who came up with this should be taken out and hung in public! It is bad enough these incompetents were totally unprepared to deal with an outage of this scope, bad enough they waited so long to call for assistance fron out-of-state crews (today is the first day we have seen an out-of-state crew anywhere nearby and we STILL have not seen a single O&R crew around!), bad enough O&R gives out false, misleading, inaccurate, useless information, bad enough it was nearly impossible to reach a live person for days - but offering free ice as some sort of consolation would be a bad joke for a Staurday Night Live routine if it were not so offensive! I hope the news networks, the state legislature, and the Public Utilities Commission conduct a thorough investigation of this disaster and hold accountabel all O&R executives who failed so miserably in this. It would be a miracle if no one dies from their complete incompetence (from hypothemia, carbon monoxide poisoning or a house buring down from people trying to keep warm!) and is someone DOES die, I'd like to see O&R execs go to prison. A"Gas Smart meter" was installed. In December we received only an electric bill, no gas charges. Our January bill received was for 64 days of gas, the charge was four (4) times the usual amount of ccf's . we were not given a reading for Nov-Dec. so now our January bill is twice the amount and they want to charge interest if we dont pay it all at once. We are retired Seniors . They admit they had a problem, tomorrow we go there and demand to see what our Dec gas usage was. read more

This company is an absolute joke. And the associates (Charlene R.) in particular should be ashamed of themselves. My townhouse was built in 2001 and I bought it in 2012. Apparently, as I'm just finding out in 2020, the meters were installed incorrectly, but have been routinely checked by O&R for years. Turns out I've been paying for my neighbors use and they've been paying for mine. O&R came out years ago to rectify a "mixed meter issue" in which they assured me it was ok and the meters were fine. Well fast forward and they date me a letter from December 2019, that I actually receive in February 2020, saying they're debiting the difference from my account that I owe. Thankfully, they're only allowed to go back a year of usage but not many middle class families with two small kids have close to $1K just laying around. By the time I received the letter, it was after business hours on a Friday and the money came out Monday (with no option to cancel my auto payment via their website of course) I would encourage everyone to make sure that their meter situation is correct. That you must give them a credit or debit card or gift card to pay immediately. Do not use the above number to report fraudulent calls. Report the call to 877- 434- 4100. O & R is doing nothing thus far to stop this. Anyone with an o&r and central hudson account should know your information has been compromised. I receive these calls weekly!
