A heating and AC check up has been on my task list for the better part of 1 year. It quickly moved to the top when my AC stopped working, because dealing with 90+ degree temperatures is no joke. I decided to call Clarkstown Heating & Air Conditioning based on two things: Seeing their trucks driving around Rockland County all the time, and positive online reviews stressing their professionalism, promptness, and honesty. It was a pleasure scheduling, from the polite office staff, to the confirmation call that my tech was on the way, to the actual appointment with my technician Randolph. Randolph, an energetic and polite young man, greeted me with a firm handshake, and friendly smile. He confirmed the job scope, and price, and got to work and diagnosed the problem, and immediately solved it! He also gave me a tutorial, based on the questions I was asking, on how to use my existing system more efficiently, how best to set each thermometer, and when and how to change air filters if / when I wanted to do it myself. I'm satisfied with my service, and hope my 2nd appointment later this week (for a separate issue) goes as well. I was charged $109.00 + tax for the AC Diagnostic Check. read more

Buyer Beware: Outrageous Pricing for Basic Repairs I am incredibly disappointed with Clarkstown Heating & Air Conditioning. My AC capacitor went out on a hot Friday, and I contacted them looking for a prompt repair. While the technician who arrived was professional, the billing was completely predatory. They charged me $685 plus tax to replace a single dual capacitor. This is a basic 30-minute job, and the high-end universal part they used costs under $100 retail. The standard market rate for this repair in Rockland County tops out around $350 to $450. Charging nearly $700 for a simple part swap is an extreme, unconscionable markup. There are plenty of honest, local HVAC professionals in our area who charge fair market rates. I will never use this company again, and I strongly advise other Rockland County homeowners to look elsewhere unless you want to be severely overcharged. read more

Clarkstown Provides a service contract with a 24 hour service guarantee. They are closed sundays. In addition, they maintained my new unit, offering to install a trap in a newly constructed how for $941. I paid it because they suggested it. The installation of said unit caused the condenser unit to overflow and shut off, so no AC because of their maintenance, and no value of maintenance contract because they cant honor their 24 hour service guarantee. It as installed Thursday, Shutoff on Friday, and they can't service it until Tuesday. They dont honor their contracts. Beware... you are paying for nothing but problems for an expensive contract. read more

This USED to be a reputable company. I've exclusively used them for big ticket items, whole house central AC, generator, etc. Unfortunately, the rumors are true since being bought out. I called for an easy problem that I thoroughly researched first and knew what I wanted. Ended up with 3 leaks that I didn't have prior to them coming and a broken relay switch that was working fine. After 5 visits and $3,000 wasted, my "new problems" were still not fixed and they want another $1k before continuing to work. read more

A few weeks ago my Generac Home Generator stopped working. I found out that Clarkston Heating and Air Conditioning in Rockland was a registered dealer of Generac to fix my unit. They sent a repairman out to check out the unit and he suggested after spending less than 10 minutes looking at it, that the engine was damaged and even though the motor was guaranteed by Generac, the cost of repair would be about $6000 and it would be better to buy a new one. He said it would take two people to repair it and it would take about two days. To say I was shocked was an understatement. I made a few calls with help from Generac and my local electrician who installed the electricity hookup suggested a dealer in New Jersey, (Benson Ver Hage Electric) who also gave me an estimate. He also concluded that my engine did need replacement. He also said the engine was covered under warranty but the labor was separate. His attitude was much more friendly and professional than the first guy and he spent at least a full hour checking out the whole unit as opposed to the time of 10 minutes that the first repairman did. He was a very pleasant fellow and when I told him that the other serviceman said it would be about $6000 he was shocked. He said the cost would b $750 to repair it and it would be done in one day. His specialty was only all house generators , He came back a week later and spent at least three hours repairing it and did an incredible job. The unit now works as well as the day it was installed which was about 4 years. He even cleaned up the oil that accumulated on the concrete base of the generator. Looking back now I realized that the original company was not being honest with me. The new company I used was Benson Ver Hage Electric Inc in Midland Park,NJ. The people they sent were so kind and knowledgeable and really knew what they doing. They came on time and I am so pleased with the work they did and the attitude and how they treated me. I am 82 years old and handicapped and they, unlike the first company treated me honestly and did a fantastic job. It's obvious that the first company was only out to make money at my expense or just didn't want to do the job. read more

Overpriced and not reasonable. We had parts under warranty and got charged over $1k for a little over an hour of labor. We had to keep calling the office to follow up on scheduling the service, first they had to check if the parts were available, another call they couldn't reach their service department to see when they're available and they would call back, which they did not. Of note, the tech himself, Brian, was amazing, polite, and nice. I would recommend him if he ever worked outside of this company. He tried to call and see if they could lower the price for a maintenance membership fee and when he called the office he received a flat out no. The office didn't even try to look into it or anything, it was just NO. Overall, this Clarkstown/Universe company is not here to work with customers, they are just here to get the money. They could not give a detailed receipt of what is done, they basically work out of a flat fee or whatever they want to charge. read more

Avoid at all costs!! Clarkstown was recently acquired by some Long Island company and their prices are now 6-8x what other companies are charging. I had them come out to install a 2 transformers in my boiler room so that I could replace my old thermostats with smart ones. The wires were already run and the boiler room is clean and accessible. They just needed to make the connections. They could have gotten it done the day they were here. Instead they came back with a $2400 quote. The tech couldn't believe it either and told me he would follow up with his boss. No one got back to me and when I followed up they said that would be the price. I asked them how they are justifying charging that much for 1-2 hours of work and under $100 in parts and they said the estimate is based on the job, not the amount of time it takes as they had no way of knowing. Mind you I had to pay $160 for the diagnostic, which seems like should it would be the time that they figure out how long the job will take! Anyway I called another local company and they got it done in 1.5 hours for $325+ $80 in parts. I had a problem with my heating unit. The technician came and told me it was a Honewell Zone valve which was not working. He replaced the zone valve and spent in total 45 minutes to fix the issue. The valve costs $57 on Amazon and I was charged $719 including tax. It was a total rip off. Clarkstown Heating has replaced 3 of my Air condition Units, Heating boiler and the water heater. I have been a loyal customer of their business and I get ripped off. I will never use them again. read more

They recently merged with this new universe company so I don't know if that was the reason that their latest service call was so expensive. What a ridiculous back and forth this company put me thru this morning! After waking up at 4 AM to discover my heat was no longer working, I called Clarkstown Heating and AC shortly after 6AM and got a LIVE person from their answering service . She took all my info and told me it would be dispatched as an emergency no heat situation and someone would call me back. AN hour and a half later I called again, got another live person from their answering service who told me that some one would be calling in 20 minutes. Within 5 minutes someone called, took all my info AGAIN and said that he will dispatch this again as an emergency. I would hear from someone shortly after 8 AM to schedule a diagnostic visit for $ 159 right off the bat. FInally at 10:30 I called back and got treated very rudely and nastily by two women in the physical office that had opened at 8. Noone could even call me til after 11. I called ATZL Heating and it was fixed within 1 hour. Calrkstown heating did NOT do good by me today and I wanted to share since their trucks are all over New CIty. Avoid them!! read more

THIS COMPANY TAKES ADVANTAGE OF SENIOR CITIZENS!!They came and gave us an estimate and told us that we needed freon, 5lbs at $120.00 a pound. They also said we needed a dye test to find the leak. When they came back they filled the A/C with freon and was told that there was a slow leak and we didn't need the test. We believed him! 2 weeks later we turned on the A/C because it has been under 68 degrees the past 2 weeks. The A/C didn't work so we called back. They told us that the freon leaked out. They told us that it would cost $968.00 to get the more intense diagnostic test. We would also have to pay another $606.00 for the freon again. I called to let them know that when the tech came he said the we didn't need the test. Now we have no A/C with an asthmatic 81 year old women on a fixed income. Whose husband just passed away 2 months ago That she needs to now pay $1600.00 to just make sure this is the problem. This company will sell you the world and stab you in the back. Mixed Rating here: As to NEW installation of HVAC.... heating AND air conditioning: 1st rate. Great estimate, great pre-installation measurements and setup.... great installation and prompt follow-up. Had a small issue and they came back immediately: fixed it 1-2-3. Estimator and techs all professional and polite. As to the young woman who answers the phone and schedule appointments: Excellent, couldn't be nicer. Now, here's the bad part: scheduled fall maintenance.... had to wait 2, yes 2 months for an appointment... 8 to 12 slot, took the day off from work: @ 11 am. they call to schedule for another date, if "it's not inconvenient". When I balked at this, the guy got snotty and said we have emergencies. I said like what? He said "no heat". I said, "It's 52 degrees out". After he hands me off to another fellow (very nice, unlike the first chap" he sends someone out who did the pm. A few weeks later, 32 degrees outside, I have an emergency (no heat) and they tell me they can come in a couple of days. I called up Design Air who had someone there within an hour. Clarkstown has mostly good people but they've got some issues which need to be addressed. I never got an apology on either of these instances, no follow up, no calls, no text generated "how was your service" type of thing where the consumer can voice their satisfaction or in my case, dissatisfaction. What makes this particularly annoying is that based upon my initial experience, I sent them 2 customers who spent over $ 30,000.00 on new installations in a two month period. I don't expect I'll be trumpeting their expertise any more in the future. I do expect that I'll be sharing my recent experiences in the same fashion I spoke about my good ones awhile back. read more

2 of our AC units needed repair. John C diagnosed the problem in no time and got them up and running. He was knowledgable, very friendly and explained to me just what was wrong so I that I understood what I was paying for. Additionally, I had reason to speak with the office during John's visit and the person I spoke with was also happy to answer my questions. My only regret is that it took my so long to call Clarkstown instead of the other services I've used in the past. Several years ago they installed a new boiler and hot water heater. There were a few problems where they had to come back several times. And since the installation there have been several issues that they've had to come back for but every time they came they were prompt and addressed all of my complaints beyond my satisfaction. It was always very important to the owners to make me the customer very happy. I would highly recommend their service. I called last Thursday at 12:30 pm to schedule an appointment for my A/C. I was told the next available appointment was Monday between 1 and 5pm. Being that it is June, waiting 4 plus days for service wasn't pleasant, however I had used Clarkstown Heating & A/C in the past and they are local. The scheduler also said there was a minimum charge of $109.00 which sounded reasonable. On Monday I had not heard anything from CH&AC by 3:30pm, so I called and was told that the tech had several other calls ahead of me but he would arrive around 5pm. At 5:50pm, CH&AC still had not arrived and I called them again to find out what the delay was. They person that answered the phone said "Oh I just left you a voicemail, the tech is on the way to your home." I checked and re-checked my VM, there was no message or missed call. The tech (Ricky) finally arrived at 6pm and was courteous. He explained the $109 minimum charge again. We had a brief conversation about payment and I said that I was renting and would forward the bill to my landlord for payment. The tech seemed confused by this and said that's not how they normally do it. After about an hour he determined the problem was a faulty thermostat. However before he made any repairs he wanted payment. I again explained that I was a renter and the landlord was responsible. Too make a long story short, I had an extensive conversation with someone at CH&AC who claimed I wasn't authorized to make repairs, and that I was told payment was "COD only" when I scheduled the appointment. That is absolutely inaccurate as my landlord lives out of the country and that would have sparked a conversation. After much back and forth with the office, the tech and my spouse, we reluctantly agreed to pay for the repair upfront and be reimbursed later. After the repairs were made, the A/C works great but CH&AC charged $200.00 for a new Honeywell Pro4000 thermostat that retails for $30-$40. That is more than a 400% markup on a simple part that is easily repaired by the average DIY'er. I will not be using Clarkstown Heating & A/c again! read more

I had previously had Clarkstown Htg/AC for a new furnace and an AC unit install. Recently they upgraded our home from old wall AC units to multiple ductless AC/heat pump. Each stage from quote to completion was performed on time for each appointment. Initial install; a crew of 6 arrived on time, took care to protect & respect our home and clean up all trash. They took care to make sure the work was performed to my wishes and satisfaction. Each crew member - with COVID concerns were masked whenever inside our home. One outdoor unit was delayed by the supplier but they returned on time to complete the install. Time and care were also taken to fully explain the use and controls of the units. read more

I recently called upon Clarkstown Heating & Air Conditioning to repair my non starting hot air heating system. A technician arrived at my home within 2 hours of my call and immediately cleared the problem. On another recent occasion my Generac Whole House generator would not start. A diagnosis was made, a needed part was ordered and was followed up by an installation visit. After installation of the part the system was completely tested and operated as a new unit. He took the time to explain everything to me, and then they proceeded to disconnect the old units and connect the new ones.
