I've never had a dog less likely had to euthanize one. How do you base your decisions and put a price on the care? I sent out quotes on Yelp but only 2 replied. Our usual veterinarian was asking for $600 to euthanize our 80 lb dog with no ashes included. We had researched OC Humane Society and for $400, they cremated her and included a floral box and ceramic paw print ornament. They were courteous & kind while I slowly unraveled and filled out forms. They took my credit card in the doctor's office so I didn't have to go back into the waiting room. Only downside was the young man who mis-gendered my dog over & over. If you know it's a euthanasia, please take a second to review the chart. Ashes came a week after the visit. Included is a card confirming she was cremated alone which is comforting. Still the same as all the bad reviews, I feel bad for the poor babies. Get new management so these babies can find a home or at least be cared for. Extremely rude lady (Lady with the long black hair, tattoos, botched plastic surgery) even yells at the volunteers. It's almost like she doesn't want the dogs to get adopted. You'd think something would change after consistent bad reviews all saying the same thing. My experience in a nutshell: I went in to adopt a dog, this is my third time coming to see the same dog. The dog was going to be a family dog so I brought my parents with me to adopt her. My dad had concerns about her behavior since she could not focus on anything or stop moving at all. Always being on high alert swaying her head back and forth. (She is obviously either traumatized, has PTSD, has ADHD, or she is not all there. My parents and I were aware and okay with this, we just wanted to know what it was so we could properly care for her.) The lady told us that, "the dog just didn't like you"... It's a shame that this lady is still working here after years of different people with the same terrible experiences of hostile behavior and rude remarks. Clearly not caring for the animals well being and having an alternative agenda. As someone who loves deeply and cares for animals with a future in protecting animals I am extremely disappointed in the Humane society allowing this to continue. Cried for almost 2 hours after leaving. These cats deserve so much better. I really wish I could have adopted one just to save them from this place, but all of them were sick and I have a cat at home already. The cages are so small I saw multiple cats having to sleep in their litter box. When the attendants would enter the cat room they would let the door slam behind them and it obviously startled the cats every single time. They know cats are skittish so why? read more

The worst Animal-Shelter I have ever seen. How in the world is this Shelter so terrible with all the money in Orange County?! Disgusting and disgraceful! A couple of weeks ago, I found a dog that had escaped from his house. Had a nice collar, was very clean and very friendly. I called the shelter to see if animal control could come pick the dog up. The Animal-Shelter told me, we are busy. It will be at least until tomorrow before we can even respond. We suggest you let the dog go. It will probably find its way home. First of all, it's a very busy facility w few volunteer workers. Please be considerate of their abilities to make adoptions timely and convenient for you. It's a rigid process to ensure proper pet ownership and that medical needs are up to date. There are several animals that need rescuing, so if you're planning on getting a pet, start here. They have animals of all age ranges from senior to baby. These rescues are adopted and received the following day after the pet has been neutered and medical needs such as shots and health screens, are up to date. I have nothing but good things to say about the staff and my overall experience at this shelter. They were all very nice and helpful, even the dog walk volunteers answered questions that I had about the chihuahua I was interested in. It took me just 3 hours or so to sign the paperwork, get my chihuahua fixed, get all her immunization shots, and released for me to pick her up. There is a large amount of dogs in the shelter, so the staff is always busy. It is definitely a stressful environment for the sheltered dogs with barking and commotion, but the staff is doing what they can to help these dogs find a new home. It just shows how many pets are abandoned, lost, or turned in due to financial burden. As I waited to do the paperwork, 2 people came in to drop a lost chihuahua and a crate full of kittens. I can't imagine how many intakes they receive on a daily basis. It's very sad to see and I hope every single one of those dogs and cats find a new loving family. I am APPALLED at the service (or lack thereof) that my family received from one of your representatives. If your facility wants to legitimately serve the community and its animals, there needs to be some major re-evaluating of your staff! My daughter and I found a dog which we brought to OCHS and wanted to make sure the dog found its way back to its family. We had already spoken to animal control who told us to take the dog to OCHS. We were told that the dog was chipped but the center's representative did not take any other productive steps towards reuniting this dog with its owners. Instead, she talked back to us SUPER rudely--going so far as to even blaming us for the dog's unfortunate situation. My daughter cried on the way home from the impertinent behavior from the young lady. Even I was dismayed and DISGUSTED by the lack of respect from her. She rudely rushed us out without having helped at all. When we asked for her name, she REFUSED to give it! OCHS, your money would be better spent paying someone else in her place. She is a LIABILITY to your operation. I am having a hard time separating my feelings about her and how I feel about your organization. If the administrators of OCHS are okay with how the employees are treating its clients, then we will no longer direct our donations and financial support to OC Humane Society. I just walked in to see the dogs and cats and was overwhelmed by the amount of stuff at the door and inside. Super thankful they have that many donations, however there were puppy kennels (just as I entered the pet area) in the sun and only partially covered by blankets. Their kennels had feces in them and smelled horrendous. I offered to donate new trays for the dogs (since plastic absorbs urine odor) and the lady (pictured in another 1 star review) was very curt and off putting. She said, "well this is what's been approved! This is how we keep them alive!" smh I visited the cats and was just as disappointed in how they were kept. There were also 5 puppies in 1 small cat kennel. They couldn't even all sit at the same time! They were crawling on each other. She admitted they can only have 50 dogs but then said she has over 100 dogs! She also said they're privately owned? But can receive donations? I don't understand how the Humane Society can be privately owned and yet be able to take in donations. The woman didn't have good customer service skills at all. There is a brunette female, with tattoos and heavy makeup perhaps her name is Rose from the reviews. Like all the reviews, which are MANY below, Very rude, disrespectful, she just didn't want to be and dont bother me attitude. Rolling of the eyes, cutting people off when they are telling their story, telling them they can't read the regulations...Clearly, its an issue. This is very sensitive work that a company like the Humane Society does. Saving animals lives...or is supposed too. Sept 19, 2022, Haster Basin Park in Garden Grove, FOUR of us regular dog walking people found 2 abandoned dogs in the park...two white terriers...about 4-5...scared, dirty and hungry..Garden Grove Police came, told us to take the dogs to the OC Humane Society in HB On Newland Ave. There were four of us, all garden grove residents with dogs... but we had to go to work after two hours waiting for the GG police. Michelle Dyton, was a woman who is friendly but now, lives out of her car due to some sad circumstance...said she would wait for the police. The police came 4 hours later, told Michelle that she had to take them to the HB location of the Humane Society. NOTE: She has lived in Garden grove for 10 years and worked as a secretary at the Queen Mary in Long Beach. and has been homeless after losing her job a few months ago. When she got there at noon during lunch, The lady at the front desk demoralized her to tears. This front desk woman disparaged her, disbelieved her story, and didn't believe that they were not her dogs, basically told her, she is homeless so we can't take the dogs. When Michelle tried to explain her story, all she got was rolling of the eyes, I dont have time for this...your not listening...and basically Gaslight. WE dont take dogs from homeless people she said. Michelle left there crying...and the next day when I saw her in the park to follow up she cried for 20 minutes tell me what happened. She was the ONLY one that would help these two dogs to the extent she did. Management, please do something about this women. Filled out paperwork, called, looked on website,came on 103122 @ 310pm in hopes of adopting, told because of Halloween decided to close early and to come back next day. There was a posted sign for a discounted price if adopted a pet by 1031, told this wud be honored on 110122 due to closing early. Left work early at hospital to adopt pet for family. Arrived at 0930 110122, stood waiting as receptionist, with back to incoming customers chatted with coworker. When finally addressed me abruptly said the form must be done, did I call to set time, tried to explain situation on 103122 and yes all policies followed. Receptionist rudely said well u can't just come in here, her tone, demeanor and refusal to allow me to speak made me leave the office with no desire to adopt from this organization. I volunteer with several organizations in orange county we would never address not tolerate such abrasive, rude behavior. A prison or jail would be better served by the receptionist. How unfortunate for the unfortunate animals who have this individual as their gate keeper. read more

They had many wonderful dogs of all breeds. Their volunteers were very kind, caring and helpful.

There is an outrageous amount of donations piling up outside, no notice on the locked door and unopen during posted business hours. There is no notice of a break or lunch. After I inquired next door I was informed they should he open and to knock on the door. When I tried that a brunette female came to the door and screamed, 'we are out to lunch! Come back!!!!' Since closures are not posted they seem to close from about 1:15 pm at least to 2:21 pm as she indicated to come back in exactly 1 hour. Also this shelter is located in the city of Huntington Beach but says it serves the city of garden grove. There is no alternate shelter that claims to serve Huntington Beach so FYI! How is this possible and why? Im looking for a lost pet so it was not of any help. Check the website and pray they keep it up to date. read more

Disgusting treatment from the front desk lady. She made my little sister wait outside for 20 minutes after she called ahead of time to see if they were open 10 minutes before. When we went inside she asked if we were over 18 and me and my partner are (we are both 19) and my sister is 17. I said that I am and would vouch for my sister- who is almost 18 herself. She said that it had to be a parent or guardian to allow a kid in. I told her I'm her older brother and we'd love to look at the cats. She said that only I would he allowed in because I'm not her parent. Im an adult man, why should we not be let in? I remember coming here as a kid with a babysitter who was barely 18 and they were fine with it. She continued to berate us and refuse to acknowledge me as her guardian. She was so incredibly rude and disrespectful. I understand why so many people have left poor reviews on her customer service. The volunteers were so helpful and sweet, and they're not even getting paid! I have no idea how this wretched woman is able to keep her job here. Theres piles of donations outside the shelter and she just sits at the desk taking lunch during the 4 HOUR WINDOW they accept people in. The poor dogs and cats at this shelter. Its a privately owned shelter and I would never want to give them money through an adoption after hearing horror stories from other people. They run a strict pound. But have their stuff together. We just adopted a 7 year old toy poodle for $100 flat. It comes will all shots and neutered. Along with the computer chip they put under their skin. Younger dogs are $180 flat. Rose does a good job managing this location and it's less than i mile to the beach read more

I had a great experience. Went in and with my daughter and we able to see the cats an were able to bring cats out an see their personality and play with them. We adopted 2 and are going back for a 3rd. The lady at the desk was very very helpful and informative, she helped answering all our questions and everything was legit like it should be in that that you fill out pet adoption paperwork. Helpful Notes: 1. Bring your lease agreement if you rent so you can prove your complex allows pets 2. The pet adoption fee was only like $120 for spay and chip and shots. For my 200th review, I wanted to do something kind of special. My 9 year old girl wanted a pet of her very own to take care of. She started looking in books and magazines and was naturally drawn to the pure bred animals. All cute and cuddly. I needed to explain the difference between a pet shop dog, a breeder and a shelter. After hearing what happens in pet mills and the unhealthy animals that are produced, we started to discuss breeders and how they produce animals that are totally unnecessary. The world is filled with a--holes that want to to turn a quick buck by selling puppies while thousands are killed each week in shelters. She quickly understood that she could do a mitsvah, and act of kindness, by rescuing an animal rather than helping an illicit underground industry. See the attached photo. This is "Sparkles-Bubbles-Rainbow-Unicorn-Dog"........ "Sparky" for short. He is a MUTT.......a forgotten, left for dead, mixed breed animal. He was shy and cowered in the back of the cage. We knew he had potential and we adopted him. He is 9 months old and was at the shelter for 2 months before we called him ours. The staff was very helpful in the process and answered all of our questions. We've only had CRASH for 11 days but he is already loving his forever home. We brought him back to AAA Animal Hospital (next door) today to get his neutering stitches out and the staff all came out to see how well our new pup is doing! I'm really sad that the OC Humane Society has such a low rating on Yelp! We adopted a 2 year old border collie/ aussie shephard/ lab mix and he is phenomenal. Poor lil guy was sitting in the shelter for 3 weeks before we found him and brought him home. This shelter may not be the biggest shelter in the area, but the staff is wonderful. This is a low-kill shelter (basically they only put down animals who show strong signs of aggression or have diseases that could put the other animals at risk). The kennels are fairly clean and the dogs are walked daily. The staff is extremely nice yet somewhat strict. I can appreciate a strict staff at an animal shelter. The staff makes you fill out a form before you see the animals and they make sure you're a qualified applicant for adoption. If you don't qualify, they don't let you walk the dogs or adopt. Simple as that. These folks don't waste time with people who aren't serious or wouldn't be suitable pet owners. Any responsible pet owner can appreciate that! Our adoption process went smoothly and we are blessed to have such a sweet dog as a part of our family now. We continue to take our pup to the AAA animal hospital that's attached to the shelter. Every time we bring our puppy in to visit the staff at the animal shelter, they always spoil him with treats and love. The staff here LOVE the animals and they are always so overjoyed to see us. Good grief, she tears up the paperwork and says "I don't know what's going on, you have two different addresses, and I'm not really happy about the way you treated your previous cats and how you talked about your leasing agent." She was off the hook RUDE, ABRASIVE and probably ate glass for breakfast. WTF??! Who the hell are YOU to be so nasty and judgmental???! People can have two different homes and take their pet with them. My fiancé has had pets his entire life and treated them with the utmost care. We're two highly educated professionals. Today I was at the adoption center with my grandparents who were looking to adopt a pair of small dogs. The woman with darker skin and black hair at the front desk was entirely rude to my grandma when she inquired about what to do to adopt them. I was appalled and flat out told her she was being rude. She disagreed with me and continued to harshly communicate the bare minimum of helpful information regarding this process. We were simply trying to adopt a couple dogs and I was actually interested in volunteering, until that interaction. Which is truthfully sad. I asked for this woman's name and she wouldn't even give it to me, fully aware that the way she was acting was out of line and not wanting to implicate herself like a coward. You would think employees here would be kind and encouraging toward adoptions? I guess not. Our family cat Jack had urinary blockage three separate times costing me 600$ every time.. after spending almost 2 grand it was time to take him home, I was 38$ short.. They had been being walked and it said that they were open 9 to 3 and the open sign was even blinking saying it was open asked to come in and the lady told us that we could not come in.
