Came here because my optometrist said they might have seen thinning in my retina and needed possible lasering. The wait was long, about 2 hours before I was helped, but the staff was nice and professional. I like this place because they focus on retina, inside of your eye and it helps peace of mind they're not missing anything. Overall it felt fine and I have a laser appointment next month. I've called down there 25 times trying to set an appointment with an eye surgeon and they never ever call me back they expect you to drive there to make an appointment and will only pretend to give you an appointment over the phone don't believe it 'cause you won't have an appointment. They treat you like cattle and like they're doing you a favor by taking your money for their service . Their medical license should be revoked for horrible customer service. The front office staff are disrespectful and dismissive and need to take customer service and communication courses. Once I was taken back for tests, everyone seemed to be in bad moods. I felt as if I was a bother and dismissed from the minute I walked in the door, throughout the exam and waiting to schedule my next appointment. The gal snapped at me when I told her I could call to schedule, saying, "Just wait until I am finished!" I have no intention of ever returning. I seldom write reviews however I'm compelled to write one about OC Retina and Dr Sanford Chen who saved my sister from loosing her vision to retina detachments. I am now experiencing his expertise first hand as I successfully recover from my surgery. I won't get into the details of our eye procedures but must complement him and his amazing staff for their compassion, friendliness and extreme professionalism. I normally have a pleasant experience with the entire staff at the Laguna Hills OC Retina office. Today, I had the regretful and unfortunate experience of dealing with a pompous, unprofessional and rude nurse named Gerald. Heralds bedside manner and unacceptable attitude and sense of grandeur (clearly expected) needs to be checked and corrected before this office begins to lose patients. As you can see in the overall rating, which is already not great, keeping staffers like Gerald in front of patients could be a detriment to the business. I've definitely considered a new office though I do think my doctor, Dr Kim is excellent that fact makes it hard for me to leave, but Gerald emolument at this office should be seriously reconsidered. read more

i just came from a very delightful time with the doctors and staff of Orange County Retina in Santa Ana. Warmly welcomed, cordially treated, and professionally received. I could not have asked for more. Even though the wait time was long, I was able to enter into conversation with fellow waiters and that was a blessing. I had seen Dr. Sanford Chen twice on the recommendation of my ophthalmologist, for monitoring and possible treatment of a retina issue. No problem either time nor did I expect one for the third 6-month follow-up, originally scheduled about 3 weeks ago. His office called about a week prior to that to say the doctor could not make the appointment and we would have to reschedule, which we did for April 4. His staff just called today to say he now couldn't make that either and the earliest would be April 25. When I asked what assurance I'd have that Chen would make that appointment, the answer from the very abrupt and curt male staff was one word, "none." Nothing close to an apology or explanation for them not keeping the latest appointment. It's one thing to have to reschedule once. No problem. Twice? Maybe. But there is no excuse for staff's take-it-or-leave-it attitude. I've left it, Dr. Chen and Orange County Retina Medical Group. read more

But despite the wait (which is inevitable if you want to live around here) my experience was still very satisfying. It was also obvious to me that Dr. Chen and his staff are very qualified and they are friendly and cheerful as well. After over 2 years of seeing Dr. Rajiv Rathod at the Fullerton, California office , I've given up. It's not the doctor, but the unpleasant office staff. It's mainly the office manager. She can never be pleasant. Today, I arrived 45 minutes early for my appointment. She asked me, why did I arrive so early. I told her that I wanted to get my eyes dilated early. Of course, that didn't fit into their schedule. She told me to come back in 30 minutes. That was all I could take. I will now find another doctor. That's an easy task, as there are many equally qualified doctors around St. Jude Medical Center. If you have a choice, DON'T GO HERE!!!!! read more

My first visit to a retina specialist. I was referred to them by my Optometrist at 20/20 after I developed a blurry patch in my periphery. I was COVID positive, outside of my isolation period per my Doctor and per CDC guidance with no further symptoms. I explained this to the front desk prior to my arrival and they approved my visit as it was considered urgent given the risk of retinal detachment. When I got there, I was checked in, dilated in both eyes and before I knew it, another nurse came in to the exam room and kicked me out! First time dilated, blurry vision in both eyes and was told their doctor would not see me and asked to leave... come back in mid-August they said. What a joke. So much for the hippocratic oath. read more

Waited more than 2 hours (waiting area + in the exam room) and still haven't caught a sight of the doctor I'm supposed to see today (Dr. Chen). The total time a combination of 3 staff members have been with me in my 2 hour wait is around 10 mins. They diluted my eyes so I can't even read/watch things on my phone. Would you like be treated like a part on assembly line? Then this is the place for you! I had 2 visits here, at least 20-40 people in the waiting room all at once. People crowded by the door and walk ways. They take you from one room to the next without explaining to you what they're doing or are upfront about the tests being extra $$. Please if you care about your eyes and cherish your peace and and time, go elsewhere. I had the unfortunate luck to be assigned to Dr You. He saw me for max 60 seconds both times I was there and I left with a brush off to go buy and take over the counter baby aspirin. I was in tears, he never asked if I had questions or if I understood. I got a bill for hundreds of dollars over my co-pay.l and when I voiced my concerns I never received a call back. read more

We have been to the Laguna Hils office 3 times. Though Dr. Chan is fine, the office staff seems very bored and barely going through their job. No greeting, no smiles and very little help. Depressing. Also important, they are also behind schedule every time with seemingly little care about how long the patients wait. Could be a doctor timing issue, hard to say. read more

The pros. We liked the doctor and most of the staff, especially JR, who helped diffuse a stressful situation. We had to see the doctor because our preemie twins were being monitored for ROP. If you are a preemie parents be warned. They do not have a separate area for preemie babies to be. The waiting room is very small and you are forced to sit with everyone, who is coughing and sneezing, in the waiting room especially dying flu/RSV season. Because our preemie babies are so sensitive to germs, I feel like the office should have a separate area for them to wait in. We try hard to keep our babies safe during flu/RSV season and if you are going to cater to preemies then having a special area for them is a must. The first 3 times I went to the office we had to wait an hour and half. Yes we had to wait for 1 of my sons eyes to fully dilate but that doesn't take 1.5 hrs after they do 1 additional drop. Today was our last appt so being sick and tired of waiting hours in a cramped sick filled area, we showed up 15 mins late because we tried to get their eyes as dilated as possible so we could get out quick. Cindy the front desk girl was super rude when I asked how long the wait would be. The waiting room had no available seats, no standing room so my husband was outside in the cold (50) holding 2 preemies in their car seats. Cindy should not be sitting at the front desk if she is going to act/talk that way to customers. I work customer service as a manager and I would never let my workers talk to customers like that. I can take my amazing insurance any where but went here because CHOC contracts with this doc to see the babies from birth until discharge. Thankfully no surgery is needed because if it was I would take my business elsewhere. JR and another young girl really salvaged the day & smoothed things over. They let us wait in a separate little office area (away from coughing/sick people). And we only waited a very short time. They apologized and showed sympathy for the sensitive situation. They are why I gave them 3 stars because they went above and beyond during a tough situation. If I was grading just Cindy it would be 1 Star for her piss poor attitude. Hopefully they change things so that other preemie parents don't have to encounter this at all. I will be letting CHOC know about this as well. read more

I have now been to this office twice and I can see a pattern of poor patient service forming. First, I was left waiting for 2 hours to see the doctor at my first appointment. I started to worry if my dilation was going to wear off because it had been an incredible amount of time. The crazy thing is, that there were people who were there before me who had been waiting even longer because the doctor himself didn't bother to show up until hours after their appointments. I heard other patients asking if they should just reschedule because the time was excessive, the receptionist saying "Oh he will be with you shortly you're next" and then that patient sat waiting for much much longer. It was not acceptable. Then my exam. I came in to this office because I was referred by my optometrist who had seen something on a retinal scan that she wanted a specialist to check out. So, I had a scan that showed something odd. I come in, and the Dr did not initially request a scan be done in his office with his more sophisticated instruments etc. Instead, he did a visual exam and told me that my symptoms were of a migraine. That seemed impossible because I was not explaining migraine symptoms, I had already been seen by an optometrist and had a retina scan showing something strange.... but, he was pretty sure that it was just a migraine. A 2 week long, constant, migraine without any pain. When I said that doesn't sound right, he then sent me for a retinal scan with his equipment and sure enough, confirmed that it wasn't a migraine. Glad I waited 2 hours and sat through an entire exam to be diagnosed in the waiting room after my scans came back with no time to really discuss what this meant with the doctor. Now the second visit. I had an appointment to be seen for a follow up on my original exam now that my condition has improved. I have zero symptoms and the dr wanted to redo the scans. I was pregnant, and my optometrist was adamant that dilation can cause birth defects - so I did my own research and discussed with my OB and decided that for a follow up the benefits didn't outweigh the risks and did not want to be dilated. When I declined, and said I'd be happy to reschedule (I didn't realize dilation was required for that scan) the nurse who saw me was incredibly rude to me. Essentially telling me that they are retina specialists, what did I expect. She also told me that it is perfectly safe... but last time I checked she wasn't a doctor.... and was likely not qualified to be giving medical advice to a pregnant woman as to what is or isn't safe to an unborn child. If I can't take an advil for a headache... I'd rather avoid dilation since those are both the same drug class. Even if she disagreed, this was my decision to be made and I don't understand why she felt the need to be so disrespectful towards me. When I said it was fine, it was just a recheck so I'd be happy to come back in a few months after I delivered she continued to argue with me and said she was going to bring the doctor in to discuss with me- as if he would change my mind. I said, that was fine, but in the end she just came back and said fine reschedule. She was extremely rude. The only reason that I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because that scan did diagnose the initial problem so I'm glad they have those cameras. read more

Dr. Timothy You is thorough and takes the time to explain in detail of your diagnosis. The wait in the office is usually 5-10 min past the appt time and the front desk staff is very courteous. All the technicians were very professional and polite as well. read more

Plan ahead and don't schedule any other appointments on the same day if you're making one here. Still in the waiting room ninety minutes after my appointment time. Checked for an estimate on status because I have another appointment in fifteen minutes. I was told I was "actually the next person." No I wasn't. May have to have reverse dilation drops done to get to my next appointment. Scheduling my appointments in two hour windows works everywhere else. Same staff member complained "if I had a quarter for every time I have to say the same thing" after she ended a phone call. read more

Despite having an appointment and not needing to be seen by any doctor, we were there for two hours. The waiting room was packed, and it wasn't until an hour after our appointment time that our name was called. Ive been going to this medical office for a few years and never had a problem. Normal wait time, maybe 30 min max. Well, not today's appointment! 1.5 hr wait (eyes were dilated within first hour; took over an hour to get my eyes scanned ) and I asked the front desk why the long wait - the waiting room was not overflowing!!! The lady at the front desk told me "10 more minutes" TWICE!!! (After she put down her burger - eating at the front desk? Unprofessional!). I also asked the guy who scanned my eyes why the extremely long wait - he said "that's normal in a retina specialist office!" (Really- that's your response to a patient??) I said "I've been coming here for a few years and never had to wait this long!" So, finally I was brought back to a room to WAIT again for one of the dr's. 20 minutes passed and I had had it! As I was walking out I passed the guy who scanned my eyes. I told him "I can't wait any longer!" No reply! Lol! Why am I not surprised! Horrible patient customer service & time management issues - I would rate this office as "zero!" Will find another retina specialist! I do not recommend this office. read more

All I can say is that Dr. Chen is an AMAZING ophthalmologist!! I had scleral buckle surgery for my retina detachment yesterday and was told by Dr. Chen that surgery was very successful and I should recover wonderfully in the next couple of weeks. One day after surgery I am feeling no pain just some discomfort but that's normal. I LOVE THE STAFF AT THIS LOCATION!! They made me feel very comfortable from start to finish!! They seem to have an assembly line mentality. My daughter was referred to Dr. Chen at age 14 with retina concerns. The first visit she was there over 2 hours. When I complained they said it was because she had to wait for the vision testing machine because it was being used by other patients. Her second visit 6 months later, things were the same, the waiting room was full with patients having to stand! The doctor spend approximately 4 minutes with us. For her next visit (a one year follow up) I asked for the 1st available appointment in the morning or after lunch because I was told it would be quicker and I was concerned about her missing almost a half a day of school. We were given an appointment at 1:00 (first after lunch). When we walked in the waiting room already had several patients waiting. It was 20 minutes before she had her basic vision test, then out to the waiting room for more waiting where patients were standing. When she was finally seen by a doctor, it was almost 2:30. I guess she was seen by a doctor, because whomever came in the exam room in the white lab coat was not Dr. Chen, who was the doctor our appointment was with. This person went over test results,but did not introduce themselves. In total we were there almost two hours, so much for being faster. They obviously over schedule patients. read more

Terrible and unprofessional. I have been to their Newport Beach offfice a few times. Each time, you will not be seen by a doctor for ab giyr abd a half to two hours. Other than Dr. Rothod, no one there has given any practical advice or been in any way helpful. You wait around for two hours after your appointment time and they shine a flashlight in your eyes and then send you on your way. They had one lady who worked the front office (Racquel) who has now been replaced by someone just as rude and unhelpful as the rest of their staff. Do not waste your time or money here. read more

Dr. You saw my newborn premature child and he did wonderful. He explained everything clearly, made small talk, which calmed my nerves. The staff is very personable and the doctors are knowledgeable in their field. The wait time is fair, and there's water, coffee, and a movie in the lobby. The only thing that kept me from giving this office 5 stars is the dust in the rooms. I may be a bit of a germaphobe but I don't feel comfortable seeing the desktop, keyboard, and some equipment with a layer of dust in any medical place. Besides that this is a great place! read more
