probably the worst place to waste $7 on a latte near columbia. i will not be coming back here. the unwelcoming demeanor of the staff here is appalling. also the inaccuracy of the speed in which they say theyll prepare orders is very inefficient. i had a pickup order specifically asked for it to be bagged and they simply ignored my request. this was incredibly frustrating because i was in a rush. additionally they were so stony when i asked for a simple bag to put my stuff in. the employee, a caucasian man around 5'10", stoutly built, responded that there wouldn't be a big enough one to put my stuff in. then i said it's fine just to put some of it in. he then handed me a bag, didnt even open it, expecting me to bag it myself when i clearly had my hands full with stuff already. the quality of the pasties is also not the best. the sugar crystals on top of their cookies is giving the cheap stuff u can pick up in the premade section at stop and shop. the store is also super small and there's no seating. the cherry on top was that i paid extra for almond milk and it seems that they omitted it completely in my coffee. read more

Walked in around noon on a Saturday. I asked for the drink that was being advertised on the chalk stand outside. The guy at the counter looked annoyed. He asked which size, I asked for their cup sizes and how much espresso was in it (2 shots at every size). I originally said 8 oz then immediately said 12 oz after. He wasn't belabored about it but didnt confirm the new size either and told me the total a second after so I wasn't sure if I was getting the 8 or 12. As the drink was being made I walked around to look at the coffee in the back. Shortly after he told me my drink was on the counter and I felt like I had to leave. There was no one else in there. The toasted marshmallow latte was fine, not too sweet and easy to drink. I enjoyed it but my interaction with him felt so uncomfortable that I wouldn't go back. Stopped in for a quick drink and bite before heading to a work site. I had been craving a chai latte for over a month and OMG! Did they deliver here. I got a small iced chai latte with oat milk. I'm sure there was no special tricks done to this, but it truly overfilled my expectations. To too off a fluffy buttery croissant. It's a pretty unassuming cafe for grabbing a coffee or tea on the go (note that they don't have indoor seating, only standing room), with no frills but with a large selection of choices for coffee at reasonable prices. I love Oren's coffee, I love the robust and rich flavor of the coffee especially compared to the leading competition. But the atmosphere the employees create is unsettling and unwelcoming. I am always more than cordial saying good morning and thank you for my drink but never receive a polite response, I work in the area and I have clients who have responded the same way, in particular to a heavy set "gentleman" who works there weekday mornings. I am a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and as a trans Hispanic woman, I can't help but feel the transphobia bias he has with me, as I've seen him react and say your welcome or have a good day to other guests while I'm there. But I also have a client she as well has had issues with the service here. Whether his bias is against the color of someone's skin or their gender identity or hes just a bitter and encumbered human being, he should not be at all in front of house service. In the political climate we are in, we all deserve a little more grace than he is providing. read more

I've seen Oren's around since back when I was at NYU, however I had never checked it out. During the pandemic my to-go for breakfast (Wu & Nussbaum) had closed temporarily, so I ended up going her to get coffee instead. The space itself is small and very spartan, with clearly defined waiting areas to comply with Covid protocols. Service has been consistently friendly and efficient every time I have gone. They're extremely fast no matter what you order; I get the cold brew which is easy, but my wife loves the cappuccinos. Prices are a little high, but hey this is probably the best coffee in the neighborhood. They roast their own stuff (one of the first ones to do it), so the quality is there in a way it isn't elsewhere. I probably come her once a week or so now, so I'm a fan. read more

I would give Oren's a 5 star because the coffee is superb but unfortunately no one wants to feel like shit first thing in the morning when you get your coffee. There is a particular man who works in the morning, with an extremely nasty attitude who makes you feel like you're a bother as soon as he starts taking your order. You're not allowed to ask any questions or modify anything in your order and god forbid they make a mistake with your order and you speak up. Sometimes I even avoid going to Orens because of this man. This place is a gem but a person who hates people this much should not be working in customer service. read more

I have seen and walked past Oren's locations many many times, but never thought to go inside for some reason. Well, I finally did and the coffee is fantastic. Honestly, this on e of the best lattes I have had. I had mine with almond milk. Friendly barista was chatty and nice. I've only been to Oren's a handful of times since I graduated but I stopped by today for a cold brew, which was just strong enough to make me feel slightly caffeinated. Their sizes are much larger than I remember - cold drinks are 16 oz for a small and 24 oz for a large! While I was a student here this was my favorite coffee spot south of TC; I pretty much only left butler to go to class and get a large coffee with soy and maybe an Ovenly pastry here (not that much of an exaggeration). The coffee here is better and far more reasonably priced than Joe's. The shop is pretty narrow and there's almost no seating so it's much better for grab and go. One thing to note though is that the lids of hot drinks here are often put on the cups with the opening facing the seam so it leaks when you try to drink it; this has happened to me more frequently at this Oren's location than at any other coffee shop. Also recently they seem to be doubling up on cups instead of using sleeves, which seems wasteful. :( They have a fairly wide selection of pastries from different bakeries around the city. Right now they have scones from Alice's Tea Cup, cookies and quick breads from Ovenly, and croissants and other viennoiserie from Bien Cuit (smaller than the croissants at the actual location though). The danish I got today tasted stale, but the pastries I've gotten directly from Bien Cuit have also all been stale-ish so I'm not sure if this is Oren's's fault. In the past they've also had baked goods from Balthazar, Dough, and Underwest (relieved that they no longer carry them), so I'm excited to see what selection they'll have on my next visit. Had the worst experience here twice in a row with the same girl. The customer service here is not acceptable. The women behind the counter here are just rude. I asked for an iced cappuccino and they gave me an iced latte with no foam, even though they said there would be. When I tried to confirm if it was an iced latte I was completely ignored even though there was only one other customer in line and there were two employees. Lastly this iced "cappuccino" is overpriced. On the board it said "4.45" but I was charged $6.91 with no tip. Worse, the iced "cappuccino" is 90% milk and 1 shot and a half (they are not careful abt pouring it all in for you) of espresso. I won't be returning here and will be deterring all my friends who live in the area/ go to school with me from this establishment for the foreseeable future. read more

Their pumpkin spice brown sugar latte has the same taste as a latte (not even a very good one, unfortunately) and costs more than average. Moreover, there is a pretty unfriendly cashier (male with ginger hair; probably shouldn't mention more details) who shouldn't face customers for the business's and customers' sake. Oren's iced mochas are just like no other coffee shop's. They're very distinctly chocolatey but not overly sweet. I've gotten them full-caf, half-caf, and decaf. I am too sensitive to caffeine to drink the full-caf regularly, but I think it tastes great, a little more coffee-like/bitter (in a good way) than the decaf. The half-caf is awful for some reason--I guess because they mix the two different kinds of espressos, and it just doesn't work. I drink the decaf one on a ~weekly basis. Their decaf iced espresso is a little caramel-y compared to their full-caf one, which is pleasant, but could be distracting in a mocha. Perhaps better for an iced latte. :) Not a fan of their hot mochas, but I usually don't like those in general. Their hot chocolate is okay--not as luxurious as what I prefer in a hot chocolate--but classed up with a little sea salt or something. Their iced lattes and iced americanos are pretty good, but not what makes them special to me (they might be great to sophisticated coffee drinkers, but I am mostly an iced mocha connoisseur). The baristas are nice and fast! There are cute coffee-related items to look at while waiting the minute or so that it takes for your drink to be prepared. It's not really a good place to hang out with a group or work, as it is pretty small with limited seating space. They are a little pricier than coffee shops of similar quality, but I do think they are higher quality still, and worth it. Their punch cards take a long time to fill up, but if you end up as addicted as I am, they also do a promotion 2x a year where they give you a $50 gift card for $40, which is a great deal. read more

Don't usually write reviews anymore but I had a terrible experience with my drink at this location. I've had their coffee in the past and it was fair. This time I ordered a cappuccino and unfortunately only tried it once I left the location. It was burned, bad aftertaste, no foam. When I took off the lid it looked like a basic cup of coffee and taste so awful I had to toss it. Not to mention it's not cheap Really disappointed in my experience. I've come to this location twice since my last review. It's still a small location, best for grab and go treats, but I have more positive thoughts on it. I noticed they've hired new baristas who are much friendlier than the first set I encountered over a year or so ago. They've also upgraded their baked goods and they look yummier than ever. My favorite neighborhood coffee shop for sure (tied with Joe's at 120th). Prices are a little on the higher side, but in general pretty standard for the city. A latte will run you about $4. I love the strong, roasted coffee flavor that comes out in all their drinks, even the iced lattes (which I've found at other places to be more watered down and not very strong). I get Oren's when I'm in the mood for a good latte that's appropriately creamy and strongly caffeinated. Baristas are generally friendly here, but as with any shop, they can be hit or miss. I've had ones who happily chat with me and others who've minimally acknowledged my existence. On the whole though, friendly neighborhood baristas. I would give it negative infinity stars if I could. The staffs were just incredibly rude. I don't know what happened, they used to have really friendly staffs. But these days they change people, and mark my words if these rude people are not fired in the short run, this coffee shop is going down. We walked in on a sunny afternoon and I smiled to the cashier and asked for a medium drip with a little half and half. I stressed on "a little the half and half" because I don't want too much of it. No smile back with a serious face, okay, maybe you don't like to smile, I'm fine with that. But then it became hilarious. The other staff gave me a cup with apparently whole milk. I went back and asked whether it's half and half with a puzzled face. The cashier tried to fool me over by saying "of course", but the coffee maker realized she added whole milk. She took it back, and shouted to me "it was a mistake, don't show me that face". I was shocked, I just showed a puzzled face, what do you want me to show, fat lady? like a smile and saying: oh you were doing so great by just mistakenly added the whole milk? I was completely shocked that someone can act like this when she took the wrong order? With so-so coffee and amazingly rude staffs, guess what will happen. read more

I was excited to try their coffee. I had the Columbia roast (this is how I tend to judge coffee spots). I ordered banana bread which is for a snack later. I don't know how much it was, because no one told me and I didn't get a receipt until I walked out and they had a Huge line. Although, I believe I am fine (MY FAULT, I guess). Its a "home-e" like coffee shop and has a million "need to sees and buys". I really like their set up and they do things well in terms of catching the "perfect consumer". they are so hidden and forget about them, but today I remember. Few tips.. If you want something NEW and different go here. Parking is limited (but why would you drive down there), it has seating, and there is a good flow in the am. I felt like the Columbia was a little bitter tasting. I don't like Starbucks or anything like that, but I do like medium roast and smooth coffee. I think that it was OK. Also the one star missing is because the guy who took my order told the women in front of me (kind of yelling with an irritated voice: "you went straight to the cashier and that is why you don't have a coffee yet"... HA :) I had NO clue what was going on sooo I stood there looking "stupid" because unless you look at me how do I know its not my turn: CUSTOMER SERVICE...this man turned me off.... KEEP in mind you have to order first and then pay (I mean that is kind of how it is at most spots, but the line was grooving how would she know). FOOD FOR THOUGHT.. I always have to speak my mind.
