Oren's! How is it that you sell mugs to take home but have no to-stay cups, and you sell your own branded teas in bulk but only sell Teapigs by the cup? If it weren't for these red flags, this spot would be just another not-Starbucks cafe for a pretty good cortado, served in a way-too-large to-go cup. One could argue that there are only three window seats to sit, but there's room for an old school table to stand at and enjoy some espresso. But the espresso counter and register are set up to keep a long line mostly out the door, and all those branded mugs and teas that I can't enjoy here are taking up a lot of space. At least pay for Pandora so your customers don't have to suffer through ads. Maybe Columbia kids don't know the difference between a well thought out cafe and some place that sells coffee, but at least consider the professors. This place has a lot of potential - but it needs WORK. read more

Oren's has been a solid staple of my caffeine intake as a college student. It's more of a grab and go situation, but I've never been disappointed with their drinks. Their seasonal maple syrup latte is easily my favorite thing - it's the equivalent of a warm hug in a cup. The maple syrup is strong, but not artificial at all, and it doesn't overpower the espresso. Iced coffee runs the risk of being super sour (which I hate), but Oren's hits the right mark of the proper amount of bitter. My mother, who has a strong preference for dark roasted beans and is generally really picky about coffee, was super pleased with their iced coffee here. read more

This is one of those places that sells some great coffee. They have a wide selection of coffee and tea drinks to choose from which are produced quickly and efficiently. They also have a wide selection of coffee beans to choose from (even Jamaican Blue Mountain, although it IS pricey) as well as a large selection of teas. They also offer an Oren's card that grants you a free drink after you hit the twelfth and a free small drink with a $30 charge placed onto the card. The one issue I encounter at the peak times is relatively large lines. But then again, they ARE efficient at breaking down those lines and I have yet to witness them mess up any orders. At under $3 for a large, it's cheaper than Starbucks and more tasty than Dunkin's. The coffee here is robust and bold, so if you're into weak and smooth, this isn't the place for you. They're also very tolerant of lactose intolerance, as they have both almond and soy milk. The interior is extremely small, and it's standing room only. If you're looking to chat away your morning, I suggest getting your coffee and finding a bench on campus. Definitely my number one stop for caffeine in the city. To keep it short & sweet: - They have almond milk and soy milk. - They carry goods from Doughnut Plant (YES!) and Balthazar. - They have smooth, strong lattes and coffee with consistent quality. Grab-and-go place because it's small, but cozy with glass urns of coffee beans on display. Give your order in front of the pastry glass, pay to the left at the cash register, then step back and wait for your drink to be called. Fast, efficient, no fuss no muss. Head over to Columbia University a few blocks north to enjoy your eats on their grass lawn. I'm a fan! read more

Did I really just pay $3.60 for a 8 oz Latte!?!?!? This is the main reason they are getting 1 star from me. There has been a change in the sizes of their hot drink cups and small just got smaller from 12 oz to 8 oz but the price sure did not get any smaller. Thank God I didn't get my usual Almond milk latte cause that is a $.50 additional charge. Luckily for me I haven't liked the flavor of the Almond milk they have been using lately. Oren's was truly my favorite coffee but as the price gets ridiculous my business just went out the door. Break ups aren't easy but my pocket will definitely appreciate it. Though it's no Peet's, Oren's is one of the better options in the neighborhood for take-out espresso drinks, beans/grounds, loose tea and related paraphernalia. (FYI, there are a couple Starbucks nearby, but I don't consider Starblahs an option unless the alternative is gas-station coffee.) Oren's is a tiny place right next to Tom's on B'way. Lattes/capps are above average and dependable. Mocha-anything tends to be too sweet for me (a la Starbonks), but otherwise I'm happy with their beverages. Drip coffee is okay. Darker roasts tend to be a bit harsh (i.e., not mellow, as they should be) with nothing too interesting going on flavor-wise. Slightly above average. Staff is generally friendly, if generically so, and service is consistent and quick, so I'm good with that. If you need a latte fix or beans for your morning brew, this is your best bet in the neighborhood. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Coffee was extremely burnt with an awful aftertaste. I ordered an iced almond milk cappuccino which was not listed on the menu and it turned out to be SEVEN DOLLARS. It was a size small. I asked if they normally make iced cappuccinos and they said yes, but did not tell me the price. I told them after THROWING AWAY MY COFFEE that they really should have listed the price beforehand. I repeat, it was NONPOTABLE. The two friends I was with also complained of burnt and awful aftertaste, so I know it was not just me who felt this way. I came to Oren's today wanting to give it a second chance after receiving an iced coffee that tasted very much like dish water last year. Can't speak for their teas, but their coffees are STRONG, FUERTE, FORT, seriously. I love a strong coffee, but this is like a pure injection of caffeine into your bloodstream. When I moved apartments this year being far from this Oren's Daily Roast location pained me to an extent that a food destination should not. That spoke volumes to me to how much this place has endeared its way into my life as one of my favorite things in New York. When you walk in you'll almost be overwhelmed by the pure love and enthusiasm for coffee. There are pictures of the owner at the local farms in exotic locations hugging the thin farmers and making sure to compensate the bean growers for quality beans. Oren's does its best to both honor the ritual and tradition of the coffee trade as well as get you a quality cup without a fancy affair. The cafe au lait is my order. One tall cup and a walk around the neighborhood in the upper west side is all I can ask for on a lazy saturday. We love it so much we tried to take a cup to bunch and the waiter had to talk to us about how they sell coffee and we shouldn't bring in competitors in there. Sour grapes because their fancy coffee with whipped cream an all kinds of spices can't even match up to what's in my paper cup from Oren's I say! So what if Oren's is a chain? There's something so charming about Oren's, from the quirky tip jar, the friendly staff, the customers, and even the owner of the store. When they increased prices ten or fifteen cents earlier this year, the owner posted a letter by the register regretfully explaining why. It was such an appreciated gesture: he could have, like most other coffee shops, ignored the price hike but instead he explained the reasoning behind it. A cup of joe still ends up being cheaper than dime-a-dozen Starbucks, and Oren's also offers a frequent patron card where your 11th drink is free (any size, any type!). Still saves you money in the long run! They offer frozen yogurt too but I can't say I'm a fan. Occasionally, they'll carry pastries from Balthazar, a little bit of Soho in the UWS. I don't often purchase pastries at the store mostly because they don't have much seating. The two or three seats by the window are almost always taken, but you can always grab a seat outside by playing a game of chess with the dude that is there year-round. Oh, and don't underestimate the power (and ease and simplicity) of liquid sugar, a real convenience with iced drinks. Been wanting to try this place for some time and finally stopped by. We ordered two cold brews, one with milk the other just plain black. It was sooo sour and acidic. I've never had cold brew this bad before. Went back in and told the guy about it -- he offered to add milk and syrup and even so, it was terrible. Terrible service. I was there with my friends and the employee got my order wrong, which caused some confusion between the three of us. When my friend said something about not ordering that, the guy rudely replied with "that's not your drink! Yours is coming next." He did not acknowledge that mine was wrong. If you want coffee in MoHi then you need to go to Oren's. Yes, it's sometimes overcrowded inside but that's because their coffee is GREAT! I am also a big fan of their lattes, which are very smooth and pretty strong (although over the past few months I feel like they've cut back a bit on the espresso content). The pastry selection is also superb. I highly recommend the sugar-free berry scone. The apple walnut muffin, the banana cranberry muffin, and the coffee cake muffin all tie for a very close second place, but you basically can't go wrong with their entire selection. The only item I've had there that wasn't excellent was the new poptart-like things; I tried the chocolate and it was like eating five chocolate croissants smooshed into one little pastry. I love rich stuff but that thing just about killed me--not a bad flavor, though. My only wish is that the shop was bigger. Alongside getting crowded during certain hours, there is no seating except a small counter next the window with three bar-height chairs. I did a little work there once, but this isn't a place to savor your drink and do work or study. Overall, Oren's is the best coffee and pastry option in MoHi by a mile! read more

I LOVE Oren's. I've only ever gotten coffee from them, so I can't attest to how their teas and pastries are, but their coffee is great (and the pastries look really yummy). The iced and hot coffees are very flavorful and reasonably priced in my opinion. I like to avoid big chain coffee places (you know the ones I'm talking about) and Oren's, though a chain, is a nice local alternative to their nationwide competitors. Also, although the line can sometimes be long in the morning, they move people in and out very quickly. My one minor irritation with Oren's is the less than ideal milk bar location at this store. I can't really say there's a better place for it without eliminating what little seating they have, but it does get a bit cramped in this small store. EIther way, I will still continue stopping in several times a week on my way to school. P.S. their staff seems like a bunch of friendly people. read more

This place is inconsistent. Sometimes the coffee is amazing. Other times, it is mediocre and has a vending machine quality. The prices are competitive relative to Starbucks and other coffee shops and the ingredients are superior to Starbucks. There really needs to be better management with regard to training employees on how to make drinks well and consistently. NYC is turning into a haven for gourmet coffee shops with a lot of competition. Several of the new places have employees that make drinks artfully. I want this store to stick around. Oh my goodness. I thought I had reached the apex for delicious-smelling coffee shop appreciation after working in New York for about a year, but apparently there are still new coffee shops out there to support my ever growing caffeine addictions. I'm the type of gal who likes the staff at my daily coffee shop to intereract with me, make fun of me a little, and wake me up in the morning. So when I walked in sleepily this morning to find the staff making funny comments about what I was wearing, I felt like I had truly found a new daily haunt. The smell of coffee is overwhelmingly rich and delicious, and the multigrain muffin is perfect for those of us who like to pretend that there's such a thing as a healthy baked good (I mean, come on, there are SEVEN WHOLE GRAINS in this muffin). It's sweetened with juicy raisins and probably brown sugar, and somehow very moist despite all the grains. There is a cautionary tale here, though. I enjoyed my muffin so much I forgot to punch into work. So punch into work, THEN consume muffin. read more

You really can't get much better than Oren's for your semi-chain cup of coffee. The waitstaff is friendly and courteous every day and they recently started stocking Doughnut Plant doughnuts and Balthazar pastries, so you really can't go wrong there. Extra kudos to Oren's for stocking Jamaican Blue Mountain (when I really want to treat myself) and its similiar-in-flavor-but-a-third-of-the-price cousin, the Costa Rican La Minita. Get your coffee, feel good about giving money to fair trade vendors and have substantially more variety than Starbucks in both local pastry providers and choice of bagged goods. Plus, let's face it: Oren's Just Makes A Better Cup Of Standard Coffee. I have gone out of my way, substantially, when not in Morningside Heights, to avoid Starbucks and go to Oren's to get an afternoon fix. I love you, Oren's. read more
