The factory store provides everything from boxed chow mein kits to bags from 1 lb to I think 10 lbs. they also sell the sauce/gravy in packets and 1 lb bags. The staff/owners have been there as long as the building I think! They are friendly and serve you quickly. The noodles are thin and crunchy. The gravy mix brings me back to my childhood! Speaking as someone who has been using this product for over 50 years, what in the world has happened to you guys. The last shipment we got (distributed from Famous Foods) was rancid and inedible. Like other comments on this forum, the quality of this long-standing product has dropped considerably. When we called Famous Foods to ask them to replace the unopened boxes of noodles, they thought it more appropriate to argue to the point where we had to hang up on them due to their snarky belligerence. Undeterred, they just kept calling back to argue some more until we finally blocked them. This is not a restaurant, this is a unique supplier of a special food ingredient, a rare company doing one thing to perfection -- dry chow mein noodles. These are the most delicate, the most tasty, the most whimsicly twisty turny chow mein noodles you will probably ever see, taste, eat. They also package them in a Chow Mein Mix but I have not tried it. You enter by the side door from their small private lot (there is street parking as well). You are faced with stacks of bags of chow mein noodles. There is a price list posted. You are asked how much you want. You decide and say (five pounds) and pay (a modest amount). I've been getting my chow mein noodles, gravy mix, bean sprouts, oyster sauce from this company for as long as I can remember. Always so fresh and you can eat the noodles as a snack, I love them. My parents would ship my noodles and gravy to me as like many, you can't find this in other parts of the country. Everyone makes it different but its delicious any way you make it. I Recently Bought 3 Boxes of original HOO-Mee Chow Mein Mix and after cooking the Sauce I opened, the noodles and what a Horrible smell almost like a cleaning chemical type smell, so I opened the other 2 boxes and the the noodles, had the same smell a very sickly chemical type smell. Have purchased this product in the past and all was good. Did not purchase for a while and bought a box recently. The chemical smell and taste was horrible. After much research, the FDA should look in to their practice. This company has switched to trans-fat cooking oil to make the noodles, which in turn shorten the best used by date on the box. The trans-fat oil is very sensitive and if not monitored closely, it can alter the taste of the product. Unless the product is frozen or refrigerated, the product often doesn't last until the product best used by date stamped on the top of the box. Shame on Oriental Chow Mein Company, your greed and disregard will eventually lead to the demise and shutdown of your business. I Absolutely love this place. It is cash ONLY. Everyone is so nice they even sell bean sprouts. If you decide to buy a big bag keep it in the freezer itll stay fresh.
