No better deal than 2 entreés and a bottle of wine for less than $40 (Sunday through Thursday nights). My friend and I both went with the Steak Portuguese Style, which came with fries and rice. The portion size was substantial and the egg on top of the steak was te perfect touch! My only complaint in terms of the food was that we ordered vegetables on the side and those sides were really small. The restaurant itself was pretty nice and there was plenty of seating. Our waitress was very sweet and helped us select our bottle of wine. If I had a place like this closer to me in Boston, I'd be there all the time. Really can't go wrong! read more

We opted for shrimp Mozambique appetizer after we found out the crab cakes are no longer an option, despite it still being on the menu. I got Salmon w/ double veg & he got Chicken Mozambique w/ double rice, no fries. Starting with the good - big portions, fast & friendly service, nice casual atmosphere. The downside would be that we had to ask for salt & pepper shakers to add some flavor to the food. Granted, I NEVER ask for salt. I feel like I'm sensitive to over salted food, but this was a major exception. It was just meh. For some big portion comfort food, it's a staple for the locals and the 2 for $40 deal is hot. I have been to Caldeiras many times and the food was always good. This last time, the service was great. But I was surprised with their pricing. I had the octupus. It was very good but the small boiled potatoes with onions and peppers was very mushy. It had been around for a good part of the whole day. The other meal we had was a special of stuffed salmon. it was fishy smelling, dry and not worth the 33.00 dollars they charged. A 1/2 bottle of cheap red wine, two glasses of cheap white wine and one desert with a 20% tip came to 179.00 dollars. I know things cost more money nowadays but I don't believe the cost for this dinner was equal to the value. Time to venture out to other portuguese restaurants in the area. read more

Caldeiras Restaurant is a great place for Portuguese cuisine in Fall River. My family and I enjoyed our time here. From the outside, it's fairly nondescript, but it does have parking, which is a bonus. Inside is fine, though perhaps a bit dated. Aside from the aesthetics, the only other areas that were lacking were the bread and the wine list. I felt like the bread wasn't as flavorful as I'd hoped, especially compared to the roll I'd just eaten prior to visiting. I wished the wine list was more extensive and more focused on Portuguese wines and offer more wines by the glass. They had one vinho verde glass option, and it was Casal Garcia, so pretty basic. A bit disappointed with bread and wine. However, food and service were overall fantastic. Our server was amazing and someone (perhaps the owner) came to check on us (and others), so that was appreciated. I ordered the fried calamari, bacalhau na braza, and tiramisu, along with the vinho verde glass. My dad and stepmom ordered a cup of soup, paella, the triple chocolate dessert, and a Super Bock beer. We loved it all and had leftovers. The calamari was crispy and the sauce addictive. The soup was full of vegetables. My cod was delicious and beautifully presented. The paella perfectly cooked, though there could have been less chicken and more seafood. Desserts were divine. I was skeptical of smaller portions and lesser quality, but upon arrival with all of the specials listed that were part of the special including the menu.... Stunned. We went with the Kale Soul for starters... more of a heaping bowl of your neighbors Vovos soup with fresh bread on the side. We've been going here for years. Always had amazing food, great service in a beautiful atmosphere. The last time we were here was March 14...just before COVID closed everything. On every visit I have ordered the Portuguese soup and Alcatra a Terceirense (beef cooked in a clay pot). It is one of the most delicious dinners I've ever eaten. We decided to stop at Caldeiras yesterday on our way back from Cape Cod. We arrived late in the afternoon and there was only one other person in the restaurant. We were promptly seated and given menus. We made our selections...2 bowls of Portuguese soup and we both ordered Alcatra a Terceirense from the menu. Our server informed us they weren't offering that dinner anymore because the price of beef went up and they didn't want to increase their prices. Whaaat? Why is it still on the paper menus? Why not go up on the price if people want it? You still have other beef selections, why not that. We made new selections. My partner ordered Bife a Chefe and I ordered Alentejana. Excellent Portuguese cuisine in the heart of Fall River, not too far from Portugalia, that emporium of all things good to eat and drink in Portugal. We opted to share a bunch of appetizers so that we could try many things. We had: clams sauteed in olive oil, garlic, and beer; shrimps mocambique; codfish (bacalao) cakes; and fried calamari. They were simply outstanding. The clams were my favorite, briny and winey, with a terrific broth well-suited for addictively sopping bread in. The shrimp was also very good, with a bit of a bite at the end, just enough heat to show you that it's not to be taken for granted. The codfish cakes were so light, creamy, and unctuous that I almost ordered a second round. The calamari was delicious with a light, friable batter and accompanied by a kick-ass sauce. Of course we needed to try the desserts: our server (who was also very pleasant and attentive) recommended the chocolate trilogy, a cylinder of dark and light mousses - this was very smooth and rich, not overly sweet; and we also had the passion fruit mousse, which was pure essence of the fruit, and very very good. read more

Would give zero stars if it was an option. Placed a takeout order and obviously should have checked the order prior to leaving. Got all the way home to find an entree was missing. Attempted to call and ask for a refund, to NO avail due to the ONE phone line being continuously busy. SO! - My father drove 25 minutes BACK to the restaurant to inform the staff we were missing an item. They happily gave him the chicken mozambique, with a pathetic "So sorry". AGAIN. He should have checked before he left. But one would think with ONE item that was needed, you wouldn't have to. Got home to open up the bag, and you can witness the picture of what we received. DISGUSTING. COMPLETELY INEDIBLE. AND FILLED WITH CARDBOARD BITS. Yum! Take an evening and enjoy some food and wine with a friend for $15 a person. There is limited parking out front. I called to see if I needed to make reservations but they said it wasn't needed. Back in the late 19th and early 20th century, Fall River was the leading textile producer in the US. After the industry moved south for cheaper labor, the town never quite recovered. The Portuguese immigrants that arrived during the boom and in a later wave helped to revive the town. Among the many Portuguese restaurants and bakeries in Fall River, Caldeiras is regarded as one of the better ones. The manager knew our host and welcomed us like family. We started with their popular Camarao a Mocambique (Shrimp Mozambique). Jumbo shrimp served in a yellow garlic butter sauce, with a hint of heat. Perfect for soaking with the fluffy complimentary rolls. Another appetizer was the fried Cod Fish Cakes, which were mostly potatoes than cod. Not bad if they were called potato cakes, but I've had better cod cakes. I tried the Filetes Dourados, which were like a version of fish and chips. The fried fish was covered in a garlic shrimp sauce that made the batter soggy. The cod itself was flakey and tender, but underseasoned. The buttery rice and fries were fine. I did enjoy the Alcatra a Terceirense, an Azorian dish of roast beef in clay pot. The meat was fall apart tender, and the red wine sauce complimented it nicely. Caldeiras seems like one of the better options in Fall River. 3.5 stars. read more

This was my first time eating at Caldeira's, and my family and I had a lovely meal. We started with the clams in garlic and beer and the fried calamari - incredible! I didn't try the clams (my 10-yr old ate them all!), but the sauce was awesome - not too salty and super flavorful. The calamari was lightly fried and not over-cooked. They were exceptional. I had the liver and onions for my meal. It was very good, though I didn't like paying extra for the veggies (double-carb is not my thing, though I know it's typical for a Portuguese restaurant). My kids split the octopus special. It was a large portion. It was smoky and tender, though a little too oily. For dessert we had the flan (not the creamiest, but the caramel was great); the chocolate lava cake (yummy and definitely molten); the passion fruit mousse (it was bright pink and had too much gelatin in it - my least favorite); and the bean cake (outstanding - soft and chewy around the edges). Lunch here was nice and leisurely...good food takes some time. We were prepared and happy to linger over our apps. The kale soup was perfect on a cold and dreary day - a very flavorful broth with lots of kale, potatoes, cabbage, and meat. The shrimp Mozambique was a tasty entree - sort of like Portuguese take on buffalo sauce but not so spicy. The shrimp were not over cooked and the fries were tasty. The rice was bland and dry but soaked up the sauce well. My husband's roast beef was rich and tasty, if not a bit fatty. My mom ordered the paella for all of us to share and it was seasoned with an experienced hand - just enough salt and saffron. The whole tomatoes were extra delish. And plenty for two people. Our server was pleasant and efficient and well informed on the menu. I was a bit surprised at how few wines were offered by the glass but they had a wide variety of Portuguese and other wines by the bottle. Very good. Mom got the steak and while it was good , we felt it could have used more spices. We are portuguese , so we normally eat spicy, garlicky foods. Wife got chicken mozambique. Good but a bit bland for us Portuguese. My dad got the paella, and he absolutely loves it. But said some of the meat inside was bland. Once again, you may think the spice level is good. But my family is used to more spice. I had the Portuguese version of "fish and chips". This must have been a kids plate because I was still hungry when finished. They should have doubled the fish on this one. 3 small bits combined without the breading would amount to one fish fillet patty at McDonald's. Coffees and dessert afterwards. All in all it was a nice dinner for a good price with very nice ambiance. Wait staff was courteous. Don't let this review scare you. Yes, you read that right, two entrees and a bottle of wine for $25.99 Sunday through Thursday nights. First off, I do have to say it is in a sketchy area, especially at night. This area was sketchy when I lived in Fall River twenty years ago, and I don't think it has improved. There is a parking lot, but it's tiny and was completely full last night. We parked in the plaza across the street and I won't lie, we were hoping our vehicle would still be there and in one piece when we got out. There is a bunch of Portuguese standards on the Dinner for Two menu and any house special of the day is also included. Last night's specials were beef kabobs (I saw an order and the plate was huge!), grilled salmon, stuffed scallops, and chicken parmesan (also huge!). We felt like red wine last night and our options were a Cabernet or a Portuguese red. We went with the Portuguese red and it was really good. My husband got a single (huge) glass of the Cabernet (lush!) after we finished the bottle (lushes!) and it definitely wasn't as good as the Terras del Rei we had. We did pay extra for an appetizer, the littlenecks with chourico, peppers and onions. I've got to say, it was one of the better versions of Portuguese littlenecks that I've had. Portuguese rolls are also part of dinner, so you can soak up all of the delicious sauce. The owner came by twice to check on us and once he brought us more rolls because we still had sauce left. For entrees I went with the Chicken Aletejana and the sauce for that was again a winner. There were also three littlenecks with it. I'd order it again. My husband had the salmon special. He was happy with it but said he would probably try something else next time. Other than a bit of a lag between appetizer and entrees, service was good and it was pretty busy in there for a Monday night. You will be greeted with a bowl of warm Portuguese bread and butter. Our whole table ordered the Portuguese steak. All the steaks were cooked accordingly. The rice was ok. The French fries looked fresh which I like. The sauce was to die for. Everything was a little on the salty side but it was still delicious. We ordered the flan (has an orange citrus taste to it, not really traditional Portuguese though) and the chocolate lava cake. All were pretty good but I was thrown off by the flan. Our waiter was really nice but he forgot to ask us if we wanted anything to drink and didn't refill our drinks once we had them. Not a big deal but they were closing so I understand. My wife and I were staying a town over and wanted to try a local Portuguese restaurant and read many good things about Calderias. Fantastic atmosphere very clean and classy as we were seated right away our waiter was quick to introduce himself and took our drink order. The Portuguese rolls were crumpled and cold. We ordered calamari as our appetizer and were blown away with how tasty and lightly breaded these rings were. (No tentacles somewhat surprised me) the blend of mild and hot peppers were perfect! My wife ordered the Camarao a Mocambique with salad instead of fries and wasn't particularly thrilled with the flavor of combination butter sauce, beer and hot sauce. I ordered the most expensive item on the menu Paella Valencia and was pleased with the different textures throughout the plate with just enough heat! The scallops in the dish were a bit rubbery but the pork and chourico held a perfect blend of flavor and texture. The portions were large and the waiter was awesome. The owner stopped by our table before we ordered and then again as we finished our meal and was very nice and informative on the different dishes. You could see his passion.
