I've been here a few times and surprised I haven't written a review yet! It's a great date night place along with a great place to go with a group. There's about 6-8 tables upstairs and a larger space downstairs. The place has a nice ambience including a fish tank as you walk in. It's BYOB which is always nice and a bottle of wine complements their food very nicely. The service was great and they were always one step ahead of of us. I've been to three of the Origin restaurants now.. and have liked the food so far.... the other two (basking ridge and Somerville) were much better. Restaurant looks nice... staff was friendly... but the food was lacking. I orderd the chicken with basil and vegetables for lunch. The mushrooms and some of the other veggies smelt like they were cooked in a burnt pan and had a very strong fish oil taste. Chicken pieces and other vegetables were ok. Not sure how that happens in a one pot/wok dish. Anyway, would probably not return to this location... the others have been much better. read more

I know everyone loves Origin. The decor certainly is the best of Morristown's three Thai restaurants, but the service was so terrible I will never go back again. I ordered the massaman curry with tofu in lieu of the menu's chicken offering. The incredibly inattentive server brought it out along with my date's beef curry. Instantly, I knew it was chicken and not tofu, so I sent it back. About 8 minutes later, the server brought out a second offering - but again it was chicken. I sent it back, explaining again I had ordered tofu. Finally on the third time, the restaurant brought tofu. They offered no apologies, no free dessert, nothing off our bill. I do like this place on a weekend evening as the food is pretty nice, the service is good and it's just a nice place. It's a tiny bit pricey for the quality of the food, but given the location and BYOB status it's worth it I think. Personally I'm a fan of the Royal Massaman Curry, the coconut milk flavor is great; the Pad Khing is good too. It's not a ton of food, so for a larger appetite the entree itself might not be enough. It does fill up at peak times (8pm, 9pm) but rarely is there a wait of more than a few minutes unless you're a larger group. BYOB like almost everywhere else, there are a few liquor store in Motown but all are very expensive so best to bring on your own (the A&P down Washington and the liquor store in the Burger King plaza are your best bets) read more

I'm not sure why they put French Thai. There is nothing French about this place. The menu is small and the food is hardly authentic. There's a grilled chicken sandwich on the menu with zucchini. A grilled chicken sandwich is neither French or Thai. The zucchini, just doesn't make sense. I got green chicken curry with rice. Curry was too thin and not spicy at all. Everybody knows that Thai food is SPICY. I will always give 2 stars if I actually eat the food. I was hungry. read more

Not sure what some of these poor reviews are about... - The prices here are extremely reasonable for this area, nothing on the menu is over $28 - Many of the entrees appropriately reflect Thai-French fusion (try the Rack of Lamb and Wild Boar), salads/soups/apps are more Thai - You can always ask for it spicy if the heat isn't enough for you. This is fusion and French food is not spicy. Last night, I had the crispy fried whole fish (snapper) in a tamarind chili sauce...it was lick-the-plate good. I will say, I don't like the dungeon-like downstairs decor (reminds me of Fornolatto's at the Borgata). Somerville's is much more quirky/cool, and I also think that the Somerville location does a slightly better Mussels appetizer. read more

My husband and I have eaten here twice and ordered takeout a few times as well. We enjoy the food, particularly the vegetarian spring rolls which are nice and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. I'm not quite sure why "French" is in the name since, as other reviewers have mentioned, this seems to be entirely Thai. That said, I really like the pad thai here and appreciate how willing they are to make it more veggie-friendly by adding tofu or more vegetables. As for the ambiance, the high ceilings and cement walls make this space very loud. Both times we have gone we have found it difficult to hear one another, even after splitting a bottle of wine when we're undoubtedly talking louder. My bf and I were in search of softshell crabs. After several phone calls to various restaurants, bingo, we found a place that served them. The last seating for dinner was at 8:30 and it was already 8:00. We make a mad dash out of the house and head over to the restaurant at lightening speed. We get there at 8:20 and quickly order our soft shell crabs. My bf ordered the garlic soft shell crabs and I ordered the basil. We decided to share both of them. They were delicious. So crunchy, yet tender inside. They were not greasy at all. I can say those were the tastiest soft shells I have ever had. He liked the garlic ones the better. I enjoyed both of them equally. They both came with coconut flavored fried rice and sauteed baby spinach. We also ordered Thai style muscles and they were delicious. I wished we had some roti to dip into that delicious sauce that the muscles were sitting in. It was so good, we could have drank it like soup. I didn't realize how substantial the order of soft shell crabs were, so we ordered some curry noodles to go with our meal. Waaaaay too much food. Bf wasn't too impressed with the noodles. I wasn't either, but it was decent. The restaurant is really nicely decorated and the staff is super friendly and accomodating. We were still there after closing time at 9:00 and they never rushed us out. They even told us to take our time. The highlight of our meal were the soft shell crabs. So fresh and tasty. read more

I love love love Thai food, and Origin is one of my go to spots on the area for consistently good Thai. I always get chicken gra pra and it's delicious. They will cater the spiciness level to your liking, so I ask for my on the hotter side. The fact that it's BYOB is a huge plus, too. Prices are pretty reasonable; probably around 15-20 for most entrees. The service is kind of unenthusiastic, but the food is good, so I don't mind. I will be back many more times. read more

This is one of my favorite places for Thai food. I was there with a friend a couple of days ago, after not eating there for over a year, and the food was still really good. I'd ordered my favorite which is Pad See Ew with shrimp. It was soooo good, it brought a smile to my face instantly. My friend also ordered the same with Tofu. This was her first time at this restaurant and she loved it! The only bad part about it was that service was not that good. The waitstaff is quick to take your order and serve your food, but not very friendly. And then to top it off, they mixed up our doggie bags, so my friend ended up taking mine and I ended up taking hers home. Luckily, we work in the same building, so we swapped our lunches the next day! Leftovers were still good. =) read more

Sort of yum... I was expecting the cuisine here to be more of a fusion between the French and Thai but the menu is pretty much split between French dishes and Thai dishes. I don't remember what I ate because the dish wasn't v. memorable. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't anything to write home about. I think that it's a cute place to have a date because the ambience and decor cater to that sort of thing, but there were also a bunch of ill-placed BRIGHT lights that were blinding me the whole time I was there. I was a bit skeptical because of the 3.5 star rating but I came here on a business trip from the west coast and it was one of my colleagues birthdays. We celebrated here and it was delicious. We had the fried pork gyoza to start and although it was very expensive it for the plate it was wonderful. I had he red curry and it was fantastic. The only negative I have for it is that it wasn't spicy. Traditionally curry is very spicy and if you want a mild version you have to tell them. But the flavor was wonderful and the chicken and veggies were all cooked very well. For dessert we had the mango sticky rice. It was a smaller portion than I get at other Thai places but the quality was wonderful. Also I tried the pad Thai and it was one of the better pad Thai's that I have had. Over all it was great! Been coming here for years. Hands-down the very best, perfectly cooked, thick and expertly sauced piece of Chilean sea bass I've ever had (even better than Estia in Philly, the runner-up). Bok choy always crunchy, never overcooked. Start with the tuna "pizza" with some kind of creamy wasabi. My wife always varies her meal and raves about the duck (again, perfectly cooked) and a chicken curry dish. I always bring a high-end bottle of Pinot, because I know the food will be spectacular. Okay so they aren't very friendly (borderline cold - downright rude with large parties). But if you accept that, then it's fine. I can't stop coming back. I've been here 15+ times now. I always get the Pad Kee Mao - extra spicy. I've come to love it - squid, chicken, peppers, lots and lots of fat yummy noodles. I think I like the Basking Ridge location better but I pay homage to the Morristown location at least a few times a month. read more

I've eaten here and gotten takeout from here many times over the years I've lived in Morristown and keep going back. Really good thai/french food. Royal Massaman curry is great. The Pad Thai can be off some nights but it's pretty good. The curry puffs are awesome. So is the Peking duck salad. It's bring your own so that's a big plus and helps you save on the bill. The food is a little pricey but worth it imho. It's a loud little restaurant, so not too good for an intimate date but great for social gatherings. Awesome birthday song they play for you! I dine here and do take out from here pretty often. Actually we also host a couple of team dinners and birthdays quite a bit. Have also frequented their other branch in Basking Ridge. I really like their steamed vietnamese rice ravioli here. Have also tried their steamed mussels, garlic escargots, and various other appetizers. One of my other regular orders is alsos their pad see ew (pretty good except it's a tad greasy so I always tell them to use less oil for my order). Their sweet sticky rice dessert with fresh mango is not too bad either. By the way, they have the tackiest birthday song playing (some birthday song gone wrong sung by an Asian singer who mis-pronounces the lyrics) everytime someone has a birthday celebration there (which is often because I hear this everytime I'm there... sometimes twice in the same night.) read more

Skip this. If you want the NYC feel, just find a place in the city. If you want great Thai food at great prices, head to Andaman (across from the train station, where the chinese place, August Moon, used to be). I've been here a few times over the past few years, and I feel as if it hasn't gotten any better. The first time I went was with family, and, while it's great that it's BYOB and kinda ritzy (nice to take Grandma and such), it's no great shakes. Don't remember much about the food then, which, for me, is saying something because if the food is truly amazing, I'd remember it. The second time I went was last Saturday night with a few friends for a girlfriend's birthday. We made reservations, and showed up about 15 minutes late, and our table was still waiting for us, which was nice. But I wondered if it was still waiting for us because the place was half empty? Hmm. Everyone enjoyed their meals well enough, but we had to hound our waitress to get anything done. Took forever to get our drinks (aka tap water, yet had sparkling crap and bottled crap shoved in our faces). My companions enjoyed their food (pad thai, chicken satay, some duck dish, etc.), and I enjoyed the Royal Massaman Curry I ordered. But I would have enjoyed it more had it been presented in a manner on par with the restaurant. The busboy\waiter plopped a tiny plate down with an awkward, smallish looking pot filled with my curry and walked away. Everyone else around me ate while I waited a decent amount of time before a second plate and rice arrived. Perhaps they should've planned that better. Come dessert time, the waitress looks at the girls to see if we wanted anything. The birthday girl got dessert, and myself and another girl did not want anything. The waitress walked away without asking birthday girl's boyfriend if he wanted anything (which he did). It took three different people in the restaurant to convey to our waitress that he wanted creme brulee. Ugh, and I thought French\Thai fusion was just that. Origin for years has been consistently one of my most favorite restaurants in NJ. I have been to the Origin in Somerville and Basking Ridge and ALWAYS have had an excellent meal at a very reasonable price for the quality of food you receive. My husband is one of those wine and food guys who is pretty critical and he always loves it too.... so believe me, this place is great. But..... we have been to the Origin in Morristown and it just was not the same quality of food. We have always recommended Origin but personally I would only highly recommend their restaurant in either Somerville or Origin. read more

Second time back was for lunch Dishes ordered: Mussels appetizer -- This dish is my favorite the mussels soaked up all the flavor of the sauce. The sauce was so good that I scooped it up with my spoon and drank it like soup hehe. Garlic soft shell crabs -- omg the soft shell crab were sooooooo YUM. Definitely the highlight of the dish, the soft shell cover was laid on top of some sauteed vegetables and came with coconut flavored fried rice. At first I was so excited to see the veggies but after several bites I couldn't finish it because it was SO salty! My friend ordered the flat rice noodles with beef. Very loud., almost to the point of having the bad table at a wedding. Food was good. Had the crispy duck Bangkok, fantastic. Had the Vietnamese ravioli, while they were prepared well, just lacked spice. Wife and friend had the crab/shrimp rolls for a starter and they were tasty. My wife had the original crispy duck and she enjoyed very much. Our friend had the salmon and she gave it high marks. The 4th member of our group had steak and fries - go figure. Update: A year later, I came back to this place after promising myself I'd try expanding my menu options. Much better experience this time. I went with the French onion soup to start, for something not normally made in a Thai restaurant. They promised it was made fresh. The broth was very flavorful. The onions were cut a little finely compared to others I've had, but overall very nice. I then had grilled squid for dinner and it tasted very authentic. It came with sticky rice (five stars, I love that stuff) and three dipping sauces. I wasn't a fan of the sauces with the squid, so I ate the squid unadorned, but they complemented the grilled veggies on the side perfectly. I would say I had a five-star meal today, so averaging that with my last review gives me four stars. They might be hit-or-miss, but the hits are a hit! read more

Tried the red curry today and it was really good. There is some kind of secret to making red curry where it is flavorful and has that silky smooth consistency with the coconut milk. Whatever that secret is these guys know it. I still think the whole menu could use an overhaul since it hasn't changed in seriously like 10 years. But still a good meal. read more

I showed up at 12:45 pm on a Saturday. Two tables were occupied and I was seated right away. Really cool atmosphere with bright colors and metallics. Music was kind of a world groove chillout style like the radio show Groove Salad. Later, it switched to House and Goa Trance. Yepyep. My kinda music. I was helped right away and ordered the Tom Yung Koong soup with shrimp and the Royal Massaman Curry, also with shrimp. I got a salad with my soup, and the soup was wonderful - very spicy with strong flavors of lemongrass and basil in the broth. Shrimp was fresh and juicy. The main dish, Royal Massaman Curry, was mild with flavors of coconut milk, basil, avocado and shrimp. It came with vegetables and pepper bits and was a light green in color. It was also very good although I usually like my food spicier. Service was pleasant and prompt, food excellent, and prices on lunch menu reasonable. read more

The BYOB factor helped a great deal! Had a business dinner here with my COO and a couple other folks. We brought in two bottles we'd purchased down the street and they assisted with opening and pouring. Morristown has really turned itself around over the past 5 or so years and the downtown area has some good options but this was a good choice. Between four of us we had several appetizers and entrees from escargot to Lobster. Everything was pretty good except for the tuna entree...it was very standard and offered no real cultural flare that I was aware of. Otherwise all was good and I'd go back. read more

The food here is terrible. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. The soup was watery. My noodle lunch was greasy and was missing the usual amount of chicken- I had about 3 pieces today and 2 small shrimp. It was all noodles and lettuce. So disappointed, won't return. read more

My wife and I lived in NYC for 20 years and this is one of very few restaurants we've found that could survive in the Big Apple. Food is awesome, it's BYO and almost impossible to spend over $60 for 2 people without gorging yourself. Love it. Go try. Note-- it gets packed on weekends. read more
