OBTH has been a local staple since 1949. My parents started taking us there over 55 years ago, and they themselves used to go after high school games. Recently, my mom and I decided to revisit for old time's sake--and we're glad we did. The meat patty tacos are just as delicious as I remember, made fresh right in front of us. It hurts to write this review.My family lived off of Central Ave. and Bill's Taco was a weekly trip. My family moved and grandparents passed but Bill's was still the spot. For many years now, I have stopped eating meat and envied those who were still able to the taco in front of me . My sister orders a minimum of 15 tacos and would let me smell them. lol. I was in the city for a meeting so I decide to surprise her . The prices wow !!! I was ashamed of them . The economy is bad but $16 for 5 tacos ?? $20.99 for a combo . It's not a real combo , it was just called that back in the day . You can't increase the prices with 1949 food options. And you are still in the HOOD. Did I say it was empty? Old school since 1949. Since I was participating in the cicLAvia event that passed right in front of this restaurant I had to make another pit stop to try the famous burrito. I ordered the regular size burrito and had it cut in half so my friend could try it. It was very good and sloppy and my friend's little 6 year son took a bite and couldn't resist finishing because he said it was so good. read more

I am 64 and my Dad first brought me and younger brother to Bill's when we were 7 and 8 years old. Their taco's are as delicious now as they were then. The staff is very friendly and they always remember me when I come into town to place an order for the road as I head home up north. The pictures on the wall are the same as I remember them as a kid, which is okay, they harken back to when Bill used to frequent the restaurant back in the early years. 7/21/2012 Damn good if you like this sort of thing. First I had the 3 taco special. The taco is a half a burger patty with cheese, chili sauce that tasted like jack in the box and then topped with lettuce and tomato. It was the bomb. Then I tried 2 chicken tacos. Established 1949, there is a good possibility that Bill may not be with us anymore. Back In those times, South Central, as the area was called then, was a bustling site of African American culture & community. The Dunbar née Somerville Hotel on Central Avenue & 42nd Street was a luxury hotel catering to African Americans at a time when segregation was prevalent before the civil rights era of the late 1950's & 1960's. Dunbar served as a site for high society with luminaries such as Lena Horne, Duke EllIngton, Cab Callowy, Billy Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, etc. Also included are Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall; W.E.B. Dubois, Renaissance man. With the interior & exterior of the building in homage particularly to Dr. Martin Luther King & what looks like photos of the movers & shakers of the African American community, I will make the assumption that Bill, too, is an African American. For 1949, Bill was a man w/ a vision to cross ethnic culinary lines by selling Mexican style tacos to what would then be to a majority African American clientele w/ their own rich culinary culture based on Southern roots. I would like to time travel back to taste Bill's Tacos to see if it hewed closely to Cal-Mex cuisine, or if taste or ingredients were modified for the African American clientele creating a possible "fusion" taco that would predate Roy Choi by over 50 years. Now Bill is run by Latinos. Tried to order a chicken taco but told that they ran out. The outdoor sign says al pastor, carne asada, but the indoor order board lists no meat choices. They only had ground beef. The corn tortilla is the standard supermarket packaged larger size unlike getting two smaller taqueria size tortillas. It was grilled w/ an excessive amount of oil so that although it was grilled, it came out half fried & soaked w/ fat. The ground beef was not molida which is loose. It was basically half patty of hamburger meat possibly seasoned with garlic powder, touch of oregano, black pepper. A strip of velveeta looking yellowish cheese was added. A thick sauce looking & tasting similar to Denison's chili con carne out of a can was generously slathered directly onto the meat. Iceberg lettuce & chopped tomato was the refreshing note to the heaviness of the hamburger & grease laden tortilla. I should have not liked this heavy, leaden taco grease bomb, but it has a soothing, comfort food feel not unlike greasy Southern fried chicken or pork belly. Then it suddenly hit me that this might be close to the original formulation of one of Bill's taco creations. There is definitely a non-Mexican feel to the flavours and the use of a chunk of hamburger meat is something not usually found in Mexican eateries. 3+ Yelp stars for comfort food that seduced even though I resisted. Hopefully, Yelpers dating to the time that they sampled the actual Bill's tacos can let me know if what I had was close to the real deal. I would appreciate it. read more

ATTENTION: THIS IS NOT A MEXICAN TACO PLACE! I see all the complaining about the tacos If you're looking for carne asada carnitas or authentic Mexican dishes this is not the place for you. However, this place has been and still is a gem in Los Angeles since the late 1940s. My grandparents eat here in the 60s, my parents ate here in the 70s and 80s and now I'm here lol. This place is known for its hamburger style tacos and burritos with chili gravy. Honestly, the gravy is the best part. I ordered 3 tacos with extra gravy and I wasn't disappointed. It's a pandemic so I can't you about the interior, but from the other reviews, it looks like the same old-school place I grew up with. If you're in LA, give them a try. I got THREE tacos that comes with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and hot sauce. I also added onions for an extra charge. Horrible customer service. I stood at the counter for several minutes before anyone ask me for my order. I had to repeat my order several times before the lady understood what I was saying. Two gentleman came in after me and placed their orders ( the guy directly behind me was a white guy) he ordered 6 tacos, the guy behind him ordered 8 tacos. They both received their orders before I did. my order was for only 3 tacos. The white guy got his order before both of us...I'm just saying. I dint get my order until almost 25 minutes after I placed my order. Normally I would have left but i was really craving the tacos and I had driven 30 minutes to get there. I was not offered a free drink,didn't offer a discount, didn't even apologize for the long wait. or for forgetting my order. Bad customer service. I am a business owner and i would fire an employee for such bad customer service. I will not visit that location ever again. read more

I knew Bill and his son personally and the people that worked there (the minority of the staff worked there for years) I have eaten there ALL my life. They have CHANGED the meat....Bill always put a filler in it. Now they put TO MUCH FILLER IN TH ttE MEAT and it changes the flavor of the MEAT. EVERYTHING else TASTE the same. In the last 10 years the MEAT is constantly changing. I said 2 years ago I wasn't going to patronize Bill's any more.
