I tried the Burrito 2.0 from here and it was decent, but overhyped in my opinion. What I liked the most about this dish was the tortilla. You can tell that it's house made and I liked the chewy texture of it. However, respectfully the filling felt and tasted like bean goo. I could only really taste the refried bean flavor which was strong. It kind of meshed all the components together into a gooey filling. I got this with asada meat and the meat was kind of chewy and not so flavorful on its own. Props to the tortilla though for not spilling everything out and holding it together well, but still a bit difficult to eat. I would ask for utensils when eating this dish. The green onion garnish was unique. I wish they gave more lime wedges because that helped elevate the dish. For $13 this wasn't too bad, but I'd rather get a better burrito from a street vendor. This is a casual eats type of place with both indoor and outdoor seating and tables. They also serve alcohol and even frozen alcoholic drinks. I remember when this place first opened up in downtown. It was a nice family run spot that felt unique. It's gone downhill since then, both from a service and food perspective. The chivichanga is still top notch, but the meat on the tacos has been oversalted last few times I been. People working kinda arrogant too. Went in for some food tonight (busy Sat night). Order was taking a while (had been close to half an hour). Guy claimed he had called out my order. Maybe didn't hear it cause it was loud or I was zoned out, but seemed weird they didn't really seem to care to get my food to me. My primo and I were talking food at the LAFC game, and he told me he went here on Friday and it was bomb -- he was planning on going back that Saturday or Sunday. There's indoor and outdoor seating, which I liked -- sometimes you just wanna sit outside, and sometimes you want to eat inside. The service was good; everyone was super helpful and courteous, no attitudes whatsoever. As for the food, I started off with a taco de asada, a pollo, and a cabeza. The asada had good seasoning, which I really liked. Some taco spots rely on the cilantro, onions, and sauces for flavoring -- all three of these tacos were well seasoned, and I really liked the green onion that came with my order. I'm a fat ass, so three tacos didn't really do too much damage, so I went in on a burrito de carne asada. Way different than any burro I've had recently -- kinda small, but I ate it all. I really liked the bar in the back too, that's a nice touch. Never seen a bar in a brick-and-mortar taco spot before. Excellent food and a killer location to boot! I love that this place is walkable, or at least a very short drive from museum row, and we came over directly after a visit to the academy museum. This place has some seriously good asada, and I love that they put the tortillas on the grill for the burrito. The place feels like it just does everything with intention, and the flavor is excellent. There was enough seating, and an actual parking lot with parking available - not always a given in the area! The ambiance is chill and they have some seating inside, as well as a long bar area and an outside patio. You order at the counter and they bring the food out super quickly. I've heard so many good things about this place and finally got to try recently. My recent obsession has been with cabeza tacos and so that was the only thing I ordered here. The place that I usually go to finely minces/chops up the cabeza meat but here at Sonoratown, it comes in bigger chunks that you have to chew on. The flavor was definitely great, but I would say I preferred the texture and mouthfeel of a more finely minced cabeza taco versus the larger chunks. I do love green onions, so I like that Sonoratown will include a grilled green onion with your order. Also got the coconut horchata here which was yummy. Service is fairly fast - they just yell out your name and then will go around their whole seating area to hunt you down if you don't respond fast enough haha. There is a small parking lot for the plaza, but it is often crowded/you have to wait and get lucky. There is decent street parking nearby. read more

I feel like I must be missing something? I've seen Sonoratown on so many lists and guides for best Mexican so we finally decided to check it out. We ordered just a couple tacos - one asada and one tripa, based on reading numerous recommendations that those are what to get here. $3.50 a taco which is not bad for a restaurant taco. It's a cool casual vibe here. Seating inside as well as the patio. They have tasty looking horchata and other agua frescas. Colorful walls. They bring your food out to you by calling your name. The tacos were loaded with a pretty decent amount of meat and toppings. But sadly we were far from impressed by the flavor. The asada was okay and better than the tripa, but it paled in comparison to our go-to taco trucks in the area which only costs $1. And the tripa was strange to eat in taco form. The tripa is crunchy small pieces so it just feels odd to eat in a taco. Maybe if it was just served as an appetizer to eat by itself, but even then, it kinda just feels like you're eating pellets. The rest of the ingredients were also great! But the asada here... not a fan. The "wood fired" asada. Was not it. I found myself chewing wayyyyy too much, and not the pleasant chew I'm used to when choosing asada. Idk if it was a miss today, or if it's usually cooked better. TL;DR: Asada Burrito was good. Quesadilla was small and was like a messy taco in a different form. Food is good. We've been to the downtown location before and the menu was a little different from what I remember. Hard to find parking sometimes. Only counter seating inside with about six tables outside. Wanted to snack on chips while we waited and there are only two sizes: small which is a bag you would put a sandwich and chips in like when you were a kid taking lunch to school, and a large which was a big bag that you would buy like a part size Doritos with the labels and all. Note to the non-spicy fam: the green salsa is mild with a little heat but the red is definitely spicy so watch out. They don't have pico de gallo. We had an asada burrito which was surprisingly packed and even had guacamole in it. Appropriately sized for lunch so not some monstrosity but it's good and flavorful. We also got an asada quesadilla. It's ok but the cheese is just melted and everything was kind of "wet" still and hard to eat because it just falls apart. Also had an asada taco. Yeah it's good but can't really describe if it was much better than a taco truck. No fountain drinks but got a Jamaica agua Fresca and really felt it was too sweet. Probably just go with a Mexican coke or canned soda next time. Sonoratown is good and worth a trip back as well. I came to Sonoratown on a Sunday evening. It's located in a small plaza on San Vicente. Upon entering there wasn't too many people and had to think of what to get. They have a small-medium sized menu. Staff is very nice and welcoming and even helped me with what drink to order. For food, I ended up ordering the steak quesadilla. And for the drink, I got the mango agua Fresca. They have a good amount of seating in the back area of the restaurant and seating outside. I sat outside with my friend and an employee brought out our food. First off, the quesadilla was delicious, a perfect amount of steak, the tortilla was soft and you could tell it was quality. The spicy salsa was hot and guacamole was plentiful! Along with my agua fresca, it was a great meal. My friend ended up getting the burrito and it was delicious too! A good option for a bigger portion item on the menu. The prices for items are very reasonable! I paid under $10 for a quesadilla and agua fresca. I was so tempted to try the bean and cheese burrito but it gives me an excuse to come back and try more! By the time we left, the line was LONG! You can tell it's a popular place and for good reason. As a flour tortilla fiend, I was in heaven my first visit and even grabbed an extra cabeza taco to-go and a pack of their fresh flour tortillas. Everything from the salsas to the agua frescas are so fresh and made with great ingredients. The staff here is great and so welcoming. I have tried much of the menu and my favorites are the cabeza and pollo tacos. They are so tender and packed with flavor. The bean & cheese burritos are simple but delicious, which says a lot about the menu. I love stopping by for lunch, a quick midday snack, or late-night bite. There's also a bar in the back and a shaded outdoor patio that's perfect for soaking up the sun with amazing food. Parking is available in the small lot out front. If full, the lot turns over quickly, or you can easily find street parking in the neighborhood on the next street over. If you're passing through this side of town, make the stop. I ordered the Tacos de Cabeza along with the Carne asada burrito the tacos were good but I felt like the salsa wasn't hitting I tried both the red & the green. Driving by I always see a line and read an article recently that Sonoratown is officially recognized in the California Michelin Guide - makes sense! I like that they were open late to satisfy a late night taco craving. Even though there is typically a line they are quite efficient with orders and even have a parking lot/outdoor dining space in addition to their indoor space so it doesn't feel cramped. It was my first visit so I had to get a mix of their tacos and burritos with the various meats they serve. It was a nice fact to know their tortillas have some lard also so it adds a nice flavor as well. + Burrito 2.0 (asada) + Chivichanga (chicken and beef) + Tacos (chorizo, tripe, cabeza, asada) I enjoyed the burrito with asada and thought it was good portion size for the cost. The guac, cheese, and beans pair well with the meat and has a nice grill on the tortilla. The tacos were a solid size as well but I was surprised to find the tripe as my favorite because they fry it and it adds a nice crunch/texture change. The cabeza was a close second with the stewed flavors. The chivichangas were also tasty but not the traditional chimichanga I was anticipating. It's definitely on the softer side as everything mixes together and there's not much of a texture change. Worth trying if you are curious though. I ordered to go so I didn't see if they have a salsa bar but I did have to pay $.10 per to go container which would be nice if they were free. However, I liked mixing their red and green salsa with each bite. I am curious to try their avocado salsa next time. If there's one taco spot in LA I'll happily go out of my way for, it's Sonoratown. This was my first time trying the mid city location(I'm usually a DTLA loyalist), and I'm happy to report it hits just as hard. Same warm vibes and friendly service, and that familiar smell of fresh tortillas. We ordered a couple burrito 2.0's with asada and a caramela taco with chicken, plus a horchata made with coconut milk to wash everything down. The burrito was loaded with perfectly cooked meat and packed with that Sonoran style flavor. The caramela taco is still one of my favorite bites in the city. Delicious!!!! Came in with my family since we were in the area. My sister said they had really good tacos, so. We came in around lunchtime which was pretty busy! The line did take a while, but once we ordered food was ready sooo fast. I got the Lorenza and made it vegetarian and my fiancé got tacos. My family got tacos, and tried the caramelo. Food is 10/10 so delicious! Everyone agreed it was very delicious! I wish they had photos of how everything looked because the Lorenza was just a tiny tortilla, so you'll probably need more than one lol. It's kind of a smaller portion for a burrito but it was honestly the perfect size for me I was still full after. The food had great flavor and was priced very reasonably. I ordered the Burrito 2.0 with asada, but because the burrito was only $12.50, I was worried it wouldn't be enough food, so I also ordered the chicken Chivichanga. The burrito was a good size and the asada was perfectly grilled. Next time I would get 1 taco on the side because the Chivichanga was overkill. Sonoratown isn't reinventing the wheel. Their menu is simple and the execution is perfect. A burrito at a popular spot like this could easily be $18 and people would gladly pay. I really respect the effort to keep prices low. Huge fan of the original downtown Sonoratown, so this new location is a win--especially because I can swing by on my way home from work. It's easily 10x bigger than the DTLA spot, and yes... it has a bar, which immediately makes it feel like a glow-up without losing any of the charm. I came at a weird off-hour and ended up being the only person inside, which honestly made it even better. The menu is still the same street-style portions and prices. They could easily charge more, but they don't--and that's one of the reasons everyone loves this place.
