We came in here late on a rainy Tuesday afternoon expecting to have skipped the lines which are a staple to this place over the weekend...I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part! The line was still in place despite it being a working day(not to mention the rain) and about an hour to closing time. After a wait of about half hr during which we salivated over the food being taken to the other patron's table we were finally seated! We started our meal with some fresh house brewed coffee(I loved the free refills). Our party of four ordered the egg Benedict, Dutch Delight, side of sausage and toast. If you are not a big eater, this is more than adequate for 4 people. Since the Dutch Delight is made to order we had a 25 minute wait for it. The Dutch Delight was delicious but not amazing. The Eggs Benedict too were tasty but I have had better( I still think the Eggs Benedict at Cafe Luna in Boston is by far the best I have ever had and I often dream of it!). The sausage patties in my opinion was the show stealer of the meal. It was flavorful and cooked to perfection. I guess I was a little disappointment by the experience especially after reading such rave reviews about the place. I had high expectation and it fell short by a lot. The original Pancake house. What a find I say! we are originally from the Texas area and wanted to find some traditional Chicago spot for breakfast, and this was it. Tucked away off the main streets located in the fabulous Chicago's Gold Coast District, an historic district on the North Side, known as one of the richest areas in Chicago. The atmosphere takes me back to a diner feel whole in the wall, mom and pop shop type of feel. The ambiance was average but not over loud, just local folks and some tourists exchanging laughter and sharing great conversations about their weekend, kids, grand babies, graduation etc normal and exiting day to day talk. The service is excellent, food wonderful, our bellies content and it's a wonderful great start of our Sunday Fun Day Y'aLL! I give the Original Pancake House a nod over such trendier spots as Nookies and Toast -- the food tastes better, fills you up more, and I think it costs a bit less. On this visit (a Sunday morning), they were busy but not overcrowded, so the wait was a bit longer than we thought, but we had a table and the service and food made up for the wait. I imagine that with such a small space (25 or so tables), they fill up on weekends quickly. And who knows maybe on the weekdays is busy as well. From what I could hear from my elbow to elbow seating neighbors, is that this is favorite of neighborhood folks and tourists alike. You also get to know your seating neighbors because most of the tables, except for the coveted window tables, are pushed up against each other. So you are almost elbow to elbow thru out your meal. So if you are cluster-phobic, then I highly recommend you ask upfront with the hostess and request to be seated outside in the patio or get a table by a window. Our table was so quiet not a word within a few feet! That's how you know the food is great when there is no conversation as soon as your plate gets placed on your table. Either we silenced everyone out as we are hypnotized by the aurora of a fresh made breakfast platter or because everyone else is just at aw as the waitress brings out our plate in hope that it's theirs. I enjoyed our visit- for our money and the portions are also generous. - and my husband downed his bacon & pancakes quickly. He vaporized them as I blinked it was all gone! Brisk service got us taken care of while we were visiting and out in a hurry, without rushing us. The pancakes are delicious! My husband and I couldn't decide at first what to order because of all the selection on their signature pancakes and can't wait to go back and try them all! The line is really long on the weekends, but it moves quickly, so don't be discouraged. The patio is lovely and you really need to come in and try this place because is a whole on the wall and surrounded by beautiful historic homes with lush greenery all around the neighborhood. Nice little spot. Since I already know how regular pancakes taste, I wanted to try something a little different. Hawaiian pancakes sound good on this cold rainy morning. So that's what I got. The pancakes were topped with powered sugar, shredded pineapples and a sweet pineapple syrup came on the side. The bacon was good and the hot chocolate with whipped cream made my morning.
