I am a huge fan of OPH. I had one a couple of miles from my home in Poway (San Diego) that I frequented often. Now living in Tucson, AZ I miss this place so when I saw it across the street from my hotel on a recent trip to downtown Chicago you bet I ate there! Twice. First visit I had to have one of their omelette's. They are so good, I think the baking makes them super fluffy. The spinach omelette is my favorite, they serve it with a mushroom/sherry sauce. I asked for cheddar vs. feta and Hollandaise on the side as that is how they serve it at my old local OPH. Ahhhhh, it was so wonderful! They serve all the classic dishes--pancakes, waffles, skillets, omelets, french toast, etc. My friend and I came in on a Sunday around 11AM and had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated, which is not bad at all for brunch in Chicago. The staff was very efficient and the service was quick. The dining room space was tight so we were seated right next to another group at a table for six. OUR FOOD Fresh strawberry Belgium waffle: Fluffy and plenty of strawberries. It also comes with a strawberry syrup that was sweet and flavorful. Bacon pancakes: They are very generous with the bacon crumbles throughout the pancakes. Comes in an order of 3 or 6. Side of hash browns with cheddar cheese: A little different than what I was expecting. They serve potato cubes instead of shredded. I ordered the junior plate with pancakes, bacon and added a side of American cheese scrambled eggs. The pancakes tasted so homemade and buttery. The eggs were fresh and fluffy along with the thick slices of bacon. My husband ordered the Sausage Skillet and he really enjoyed that as well. This is our favorite breakfast spot in our neighborhood. I always get the build your own skillet. You get to pick four ingredients and there aren't restrictions on the categories. For example you could get four meats. I always get one meat. This time I got the turkey sausage which was surprisingly flavorful. Then one cheese-pepper jack. And two veggies. This time I went with onions and mushrooms. It is topped with two eggs prepares to order. I got over medium. Also TIP ask for your potatoes crispy. The skillet also comes with a side choice of toast or pancakes which shouldn't even be a choice because of course pancakes. We came around 730 on a Thursday morning and the place was virtually empty, though we have been when the line is down the street. This place is a Hot Spot! Most weekends are jammed packed and for good reason. I live around the corner and it's the first place I think about when breakfast is mentioned. The menu is vast with so many options. The thing that has me sold on this place is the fact a side of pancakes comes with your breakfast entree! It's a win win for me I love pancakes but feel guilty if I just eat syrup drenched pancakes so now I'm able to order a delicious skillet or omelet entree and still get my pancakes! The only knock I have is their coffee is $3.50. I love coffee with breakfast but rarely do I finish a cup so for me it's a steep price for a cup of joe. But I think with that price you get free refills so if you're a big coffee drinker it might be more worth it. I haven't been here in years and today was so exceptional I'm going to treat myself at least once a month. I was craving chocolate chip pancakes but I also wanted something special on the side. My attentive server suggested I order either a skillet or an omelette so the I could get pancakes free on the side. I chose the andouille sausage skillet with eggs served soft and I definitely enjoyed every bite of potato, red peppers, sausage, egg and cheese. The chocolate chip pancakes are just a slight upgrade and well worth every penny. The service here is exceptional and everyone here checks up on you to make sure you have enough water or food. My husband and I stopped by here this Sunday hoping to get breakfast. I asked my waitress if she'd butter my toast and she told me that they don't butter toast. I begged her citing that I did not want my toast cold and by the time she brings me toast it would be cold and the butter would not melt. I am uncertain why this place would refuse to perform such a simple task such as buttering toast. Eggs were runny and cooked in oil instead of butter. I had gotten into an argument with a customer who sat next to us simple because she thought I referred to her as "spoiled". In reality I was speaking about the customers who left only a few minutes earlier. But for some unknown reason this woman wanted to pick a fight with me and told her I had hurt her feelings. I guess the truth hurts. What I found quite shocking was when the waitress who wasn't even our waitress asked me what I said to this Karen cause I upset her. It's not the waitress's place to stick her nose in my business! Is she the feelings police? What is this nonsense? Who is she to admonish me? Needless to say we won't be back any time soon and we are in total shock and disbelief that a waitress would get involved in an argument that wasn't her business nor did it involve her. Had we gotten loud or caused a scene I could understand. With so many other breakfast options to choose from why would you settle for oily sloppy lazy intrusive waitresses? Why settle for mediocre food? Unfortunately I cannot in good conscience recommend that you eat at this restaurant. Here is my advice should you be considering dining with these rude people. Cool looking old time dinner off Rush St serving breakfast foods to the common folk. I had greater expectations when I woke up seeking some nourishment. First and foremost the line to get it moves fast unless you want an outdoor table which I did. Now the good outdoor seats are located curbside next to the sidewalk and one was open. Since we were first in line you'd expect the seating host to put you there. Instead she placed us in cramped table for two and then put the lady with her kid that was behind us in the nice comfortable round table that was rightfully ours. So the was a major piss me off moment. I'm mean really why on earth do that, I'll tell you why cause minimum wage employee and lacks no brain cells. There's a reason why they make the minimum wage and it shows! Ok, so I order the meat skillet (potatoes , meat, cheese ) which is ok in taste. On second thought I should have ordered the western version, I think the peppers & onions with ham would have been what I would have enjoyed. It came with pancakes & egg so its a large meal. Coffee was ok, but a starbucks coffee would have been better... Typical of a diner serving less than quality burnt FOLGERS brand coffee to upset my tastebuds in the morning. We requested steak knives for the eggs Benedict and were told they got thrown away and they no longer have them. When we were leaving, the cashier asked how everything was. We said we missed the steak knives. He looked completely clueless. Also, the potato pancakes were quite dense and the poached eggs themselves were undercooked and arrived lukewarm. We never have these problems at the Diversey location. They provide steak knives, potato pancakes are very good, and eggs Benedict arrive hot and perfectly cooked. I love this classic breakfast spot in the Gold Coast neighborhood. Small and quaint, it is worth the wait for a table on busy mornings. Because it is so small, there is long waits on the weekends. So I try to go during the week if possible. The dining room is tiny with a ton of tables (some communal) squeezed in it. There is a long hallway for waiting, where the hostess comes to gather you when she has an available spot. The servers are a no nonsense bunch who really know their craft. They are fast and efficient but still warm and friendly. The food choices fall along the lines of basic breakfast items. Everything is huge and cooked to perfection. There are a couple of items on the menu that I have not tried but it look amazing. The Apple Pancake and the Dutch Baby go through the restaurant on their way to someone's table and everyone stares. I am looking forward to giving them a try. This cozy little neighborhood classic is a must try or a must return gem! read more

I went around 7:45-8am on the weekend and it was really empty, so we were seated immediately. Then the people started coming in in large groups. It's a nice diner, but it's definitely more touristy. The portions are pretty good. They were very active with coffee refills, but not with water refills and the water cups are pretty small. Service is a lot better than iHop or something, but I'm not that crazy about pancakes. They were fluffy though. The Eggs Benedict were okay, but not special. The coffee is almost Starbucks prices, so not really worth it, but it did taste good for basic coffee. Not worth the hype/price they ask for. The hash browns were huge and I couldn't finish it, so I got a bag. The meat lover's skillet was really good, but wish it had more cheese. It felt more expensive for what it was.
