My boo and I have a tradition ordering at the Van Nuys do not go to the one in Laurel Canyon avoid it at all cost, service is terrible there. The Van Nuys crew always gets it right! To all the people going through the drive thru please order correctly. Do not order at the window, be kind to the crew they work hard and better compared to Laurel Canyon crew. My husband and I were eating at one of the indoor tables, when a woman in the staff and the manager were having a very vulgar conversation. It was inappropriate to speak that way in that area while customers were there. We would of told the manager but he was taking part in the conversation. That's poor management. I'd never had a Tommy's burger until now - strange, as I've lived in LA for decades. I've gotta say, it's not bad at all. The double cheeseburger with everything was quite tasty, with plenty of chili, well balanced but big flavors with tomato, onion, etc., and some quite spicy small peppers on the side included. Okay, so I got an anecdote of how I ended up getting a cheeseburger from this location. I had a cheeseburger from Ruby's in the valley (attached to some major mall) on a Sunday, and I became this psycho burger-craving addict. My eye's were half bulging out of my sockets, I had this constant drooling, and I coudln't focus on anything cuz I could only obsess about the cheeseburger from Ruby's. I'm sure you've had those days if you're a fatty and a foody like myself. That day, Ruby's was not a possibility, so I went on my venture to find a cheeseburger as good. Went to Billy's Buffalo Burgers and that was closed. I didn't want In 'n Out. I knew Jack or Burger King or Mc. Donald's wouldnt' cut. I also knew Hamburger Hamlet would just ruin it for me. Then, I was driving right pass Tommy's and I thought, "Oh snap, I remember having one on Hollywood Blvd by Fluorentine Gardens back in 1999 and I think it was good, and maybe supposedly one of the best!" I got my cheeseburger from the drive-through, and to immediately relieve all my symptoms of withdrawal, I pulled over to eat my burger. Wow, I was so shocked. The bread was COLD and kinda dry. The meat was just whatever. The whole thing was disgusting. I ate a few bites and had to throw it away. Maybe obsessing about the juicy burger, with the perfectly melted cheese, and toasted bun with the perfectly crispy lettuce ruined it for me. Maybe the burger flipper did a crap job and the bread was supposed to be toasted? Never going back. I finally got my Ruby's burger a few days later, and can you believe it, it was ACTUALLY AS FREAKIN GOOD as the first time. After a busy drive from Santa Barbara, watching Anchorman 2, and just being very hungry from randomness, I was looking for something quick to eat. With today being Christmas, I didn't have a lot of options of places closed, but I didn't want to go to McDonald's because WHY?! So, I thought about getting something with chili from Tommy's Original World Famous Hamburgers in Van Nuys. Before moving from Van Nuys, I had never visited the Van Nuys' Tommy location ever. Based off the other reviews, this is a haven from those inebriated nights. Located on the north side of Victory and Vesper. You'll see a small little shack on the corner across 7-Eleven. This location looks very ghetto, but it wasn't meant to be classy looking. When you walk in, don't expect too much. Its a small confined space. There is a sign that notifies customers that the restrooms are not available to the customers or transients. I don't frequent Tommy's often, but I have visited Tommy's more than twice in the last month. Last time I ordered a greasy Breakfast Burrito, now its time to order a Greasy Chili Dog without cheese ($2.75) and French Fries ($1.85). There was a lot of people at the drive-thru. I don't blame them. It seems like its a safer way to get food than to walk in. For me, it was 4pm and still a lot of sunshine. I got my Christmas Gift from Tommy's with a lot of chili on my hot dog and the employee wanted to give me some peppers, but I declined...lol. It was pretty warm outside and I don't want to get TOO HOT. I brought my food to my safe haven vehicle. I did notice a lot of the cars did park next door with me. So, I felt safe with others digging into their food. I liked how Tommy's puts a lot of extra chili and is a big plus for the customer. More food for the price. My chili dog was extremely loaded with chili and covered with pickles and tomatoes. Occasionally, I would dip my fries in and make my own chili fries. After my meal was said and done, so were the others. It was like they needed the safety of Ryan before leaving the parking lot to throw their trash. Never really had anything go wrong at this location. It is in a sketchy part of town, but the food here tastes just like any other Tommy's I've been to. Although, the chili and burger does not taste as good as it used to. I remember the chili being really good, but now it just taste and look more greasy. The burger bun sucks now. It's dry and airy and almost like a brioche. I really missed their old regular hamburger buns that look like the ones you get at Smart & Final. I don't like this new bun they are using. I am going to start with the down side to this place because the food is just that good. There is no bathroom. Thats right! If you have a sensitive stomach and fear getting the chili S*#%s, then you may want to try another Tommy's location. The parking lot is small. Like 4 spots small. There is street parking but those can fill up quite quickly. And finally, their seating is only outside. So in the valley, during the summer, I can't imagine what that would be like. The seats were clean however, which is especially surprising with how many bums and druggies were hanging around the joint. THE FOOD IS AMAZING! If you like chili... if you like chili ON your chili, then Tommy's is your spot. The chili was hot (temperature wise), it was a good consistency, not too soupy and not too thick, and it tasted fantastic. I got the cheeseburger combo and a chili dog. Surprisingly I could taste the meat even through allllll the chili that was on the burger. Same with the hot dog. There was even a nice snap on the dog all the way until the last bite. I went to Tommy's for the first time last weekend and left with mixed feelings. I always see the drive thru wrapped around the corner when I drive down Victory, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I wasn't too hungry so I decided to order cheese fries and a vanilla milkshake. When I received my "cheese fries" the 2 slices of cheese were BARLEY melted on top. I literally peeled the cheese off the top, threw it away, and ate the fries regular. I was pretty disappointed, but I wasn't going to let it ruin my experience! I sucked down the milkshake in hopes of relief for the poorly made cheese fries and it tasted great. It truly reminded me of a frosty from Wendy's and it definitely made up for the "cheese" fries. The WORST service ever! I've been going to Tommy's for 20 years and no more! I paid for two dogs and they lost my ticket. The man behind the counter threw two dogs on the grill for less than a minute (usually three to four minutes is appropriate especially at 155 degrees.) threw the chilli on And gave to me AFTER 20 MINUTES!!! Tommy's chili-anything is good -- chili boat, chili burger, chili tamales, chili hot dog, chili fries... you might be spotting a trend here, and you'd be right. I sought out the nearest location, which for me was in the Van Nuys area. When I first rolled into the parking lot, I was cheered by the sight of a massive ladder truck from the LA Fire Department. Don't know why the firefighters were there (possibly to combat massive attacks of heart burn?) but I should have passed. I used the drive-thru and had a two special requests--cut the chili burger in half, and chili/cheese/tomato only. The second half was right, but the burger was not cut in half.
