A perfect Divey Diner in the Heart of the Castro. Contrary to many people's experience here - I stopped by here absolutely stone cold sober in the middle of the day to grab lunch and catch up with a friend. And I am so glad I did. We arrived at Orphan Andy's a little after 1:30 PM. The restaurant had customers in it but wasn't too crowded at all. There is a mix of booth seating and bar/counter style seating. We were promptly at a booth when we arrived. The ambiance of this place is extremely cute - lots of flashing lights, and fun decor. Even the table had old music boxes which were a nice touch. For our food I got an order of chocolate chip hot cakes, and my friend got a Monte Cristo with Potato salad on the recommendation of our server. The food was actually so good. The chocolate chip pancakes were the perfect mix of salty and sweet and paired with the whipped butter and maple syrup on the side it was perfection. Arguably the best stack of pancakes I've had here in the bay area. The monte cristo is always a solid combination but Orphan andys did it to perfection - another great example of the salty and sweet flavor combination. By far the highlight of our meal was the service at this restaurant. Both individuals we interacted with were extremely friendly and attentive - for that reason alone I'd come back again. All in all - I had a wonderful time at Orphan Andy's yesterday. Weird that I have live in SF for so long and never been here. I was with a friend and we wanted a fast (less expensive) dinner. We had a drink next door and the headed here. We got to sit in the window booth (though the counter looks fun too). We split an entree and a chocolate malt and both left stuffed. Portions here are huge! We got the turkey bacon cheese melt with onion rings. It was exactly what you expect it to be. It was a little sloppy in construction but definitely ht the spot. The malt could have used a little more malt powder - but hit the spot as well. I will say our server was a doll and made sure we were happy with everything. The bathroom here is less than Ideal - teeny tiny and off the kitchen, so go before you go, if you catch my drift. read more

Their prices, food, and charming staff make this place a very cozy establishment. I strongly recommend ordering their Hawaiian cake. If you don't have more room in the stomach after their big portion plates, then get it to go. You won't regret it. Orphan Andy's continues to offer good solid comfort food and service at reasonable prices. This is the Castro, and the décor couldn't be gayer. The cuisine is not so fancy, but it's reliable. See prior review for physical and menu limitations. They used to be 24/7, but after the pandemic closure, they are open all night Thursday through Saturday nights (continuously from Thursday morning until Sunday evening) and during the day Monday through Wednesday. Expect to wait for a table at peak weekend times, and whenever there is some event going on in the Castro. Orphan Andy's is a habit I have no plans to break. read more

Great diner food. Stopped here with my wife on our first day visiting SF. We liked the vibe with lots of locals enjoying their morning breakfast fix. Very friendly service too. We were the first ones in at about 8am and by the time we left it was packed). We got a gigantic amount of food. The stack of hotcakes was quite tall and slathered in butter (we could have gotten a short stack, but why not pay $1 more for the full stack?!). The bacon omelette was no joke - a pile of bacon in there, more than I think I've ever seen in an omelette. Came with a nice portion of home fries and toast). Was so excited to try this diner since I just moved to the neighborhood, but we were shooed out. We arrived at 9:37pm and saw that the last seating was at 9:45pm. Not wanting to be rude since we were close to closing time, I checked the time on my phone and then opened my mouth to ask the server if they could still seat us (party of 2). The server rudely cut me off and said "no need to check your phone, we're CLOSED." Then sneered at us. This told me all I need to know about their bad service and shutting down before their posted closing time. Why not just post a 9:30pm closing instead of blaming customers for checking the time against their sign? There's plenty of other late night eats on Castro street with MUCH better service, so it looks like this diner is on the decline and I recommend taking your business elsewhere. read more

I came here for National Andrew Day (August 1st FYI) with a couple of my other Andrew friends - definitely no better place than Orphan Andy's to celebrate! The diner is so cute and the service was wonderful. I ordered the Turkey burger, which was pretty tasty. The fries were not good at all, but the onion rings were SO good! Overall the vibe here is wonderful, but the food isn't anything spectacular. Will probably be back next year for the same occasion! read more

My go to neighborhood joint for breakfast anytime. I usually go for the Big Two which is 2 eggs, 2 sauages 2 slices of bacon & pancakes OR Frenchtoast. The Frenchtoast is just amazing. Good Ole fashion diner where you can sit at a table or at the counter. Andy's has a lot of history and the place shows it. Also a great place to just look out at the iconic cable cars or just at passer-by. read more

Do not try to phone in an order for take-out. They will ask you to hold and then leave you sitting there and not come back. I spent 45 minutes just listening to them in the background while I waited for someone to pick the phone back up. I figured I would see just how long they would leave a phone sitting there on the counter off the hook. Apparently longer than 45 minutes. It explains why you always get a busy signal when you call the place. I was literally shocked with the phone rang and someone answered it to begin with. Update: I went ahead and made my own dinner while I waited just to see how long it would take for someone to pick the phone back up. It's been over an hour now... Who doesn't love breakfast served all day?! I live about a half mile from this Castro staple. Orphan Andy's offers traditional diner food. The inside feels like an old school diner with booths and bar seating available. I love the booth that faces the street. It allows for great people watching. The service is always quick, and the people are friendly. The waiter kept our coffee cups filled, and the food came out hot. I had the Denver Omelet, and my friend had the Chili Pepper Omelet. Both came with potatoes that were seasoned nicely. The omelets were fluffy and filled with fillings. I was stuffed when we left. If you are looking for an old school diner vibe with food to match, definitely go to Orphan Andy's. On the weekends they are open late and are always busy with patrons leaving the bars at night. read more

Stopped in for breakfast while exploring San Francisco for the day, I've been here once before and remembered it being great. The place is very warm and inviting, staff are super friendly and welcoming. We both ordered breakfast and it came out pretty quick. It pains me a little to leave this review since I was so excited to come dine here again, after hearing that Bill and Dennis had put the restaurant up for sale. Maybe I came at an odd hour this afternoon because there were literally only 2 other patrons there comfortably settled in when I arrived with my party. Per usual, the aesthetic was so retro and kitschy, and fun. Armando was one cool dude, and I ended up purchasing some commemorative merch from him (though found it a little strange that he brought out the bill while we were still eating... and didn't ask if we wanted dessert or anything- restaurant was still dead at this point). Portions are large, which were wonderful, however, I did end up getting a stomach bug from my country fried steak, which was a bummer. Shout-out to the cook though for the delicious perfectly fried french fries and onion rings! Also, had a very unfriendly interaction with the female staffer that worked there today. She was taking forever to bring my to go boxes and box my soup up which she insisted on doing, so I casually went to the counter to ask if I can grab the boxes from her. The other 2 male staffers were there, and seemed almost as surprised as I was when she snapped back that she got it, and for me to back off and go back to my seat. Was a bit surprised and shocked by her reaction, so I immediately just said that I didn't mean any harm and was just trying to help, and apologized for any misunderstanding... She did drop by my table later and gave me a fake apology. So hey, kudos for the effort. But that left a sour taste in my mouth. Not sure what I did to warrant that, but if it's any consolation, a lot of the patrons that ended up coming in once we were leaving seemed like cool down to earth folk, and it's still definitely a vibe to eat there. I recommend you give it a try, maybe just avoid the country fried steak if the restaurant doesn't seem too busy.
