You can't come to Alaska and not eat seafood. We were looking for a place to eat in downtown Anchorage and happened upon this place due to available seats at the bar! Very sophisticated decor and upscalish restaurant. Their menu is quite to the point. The bar tender was nice enough. We got the crab cakes (cz it's me and I can't leave a place with crab cakes without eating them) and the seared wild Alaska cod. Food was delicious! Crab cakes well made and beautifully tender, breaking with each bite. The chutney like sauce had an Indian flavour to it. The cod by itself was wonderful. But wrapped in prosciutto it was several steps above. It was on a bed of veggies (potatoes - could've done with a little more cooking, onions - wow! We couldn't stop eating those, tomatoes - juicy) in marsala sauce which added another layer to the dish. It is pricy. Two crab cakes were $14.95. The cod was $35. But it is tasty food and I figure it's ok to shell out a little more on one meal of a short trip! read more

I can't believe this place has 4 stars. The food was marginal at best. The caprese salad was really weak. The mozzarella wasn't good at all. The gemelli pasta was bad! My family of 7 came here on a recommendation from a friend. Her recommendations on food are usually pretty spot on, but this is one place I won't be recommending in the future. Wow though, I was so disappointed in their service. It's so incredibly slow and flagging waiters from the side room is difficult and out of the five tables that were there it felt like we were consistently ignored. They brought us one bottle of water that felt like we had to ration because they wouldn't be coming around for a while. We asked them for a second bottle (cause one bottle for 7 people lasts about one round of pours) and it took several more asks and well into our entrees to get that second bottle. Our appetizers came out fairly quickly which was nice, but then it felt like we waited a while for our soups and salads for forever, even by large group standards. The food itself... was mostly alright. Like a 2-4 depending on what you order. We got the rosemary bread as an appetizer, but it was $5 so ehhhh on whether or not it's worth it. That was pretty tasty. We also got the deviled eggs - which are a little less than 2 eggs since they lop off the top and pipe the deviled eggs and seafood in. We didn't think it was worth it. They're pretty hard to split (though we tried). The cauliflower was really tasty though, would def recommend that! For food, I split the panzanella salad with my sister, which was pretty good but the bread was my least favorite part haha. I also got the seafood Mac and cheese - it felt like mostly shrimp with crab meat, it didn't taste super seafood-y. That was alright. Like a 3.5. Probably wouldn't order it again. My sister got the crab stuffed rockfish and she didn't really like it but I actually really enjoyed her dish lol, like way better than mine. I wish it had come with more cauliflower, cause that was probably my favorite part of the dish. My parents got the king crab legs. When they came out, they looked like not really 1.5 lbs (4 legs) but I don't really know much about weight and crab. They were however, super dry. Like 100% not worth paying for that crab, so my parents sent it back and they came back with better crab. It wasn't the best they had on our trip (that was Hangar in Juneau) but it was better than the ship's "taste of Alaska" crab. Overall, it Orso felt like a mediocre upscale seafood restaurant (with the prices to match) but failed hard on the service. We got better service from the pub restaurant and other places. I thought it was because we were spoiled by the phenomenal service on the ship but even for the rest of our travels, it was pretty subpar. The food I would give an overall 3.5 or round down to 3, but with a service at a 2. I debated about going for a 3 star rating but decided to downgrade it to 2 since I will definitely not be recommending this in the future unless you're staying at the westmark since it's literally across the street. I went to Orso's on NYE, not expecting much. Y'know, classic downtown restaurants. Well, I was pleasantly surprised with the place! Let's start with the service. Service: I had a party of 7, one was a 2 year old. We walked in with her in a stroller, and immediately, the front door worker asked if we wanted it stored for when we come out. After that, we were guided to our table, and we got a high chair for the little one. We had a friendly male server who was silly for the kids, and polite for everyone. One of my party members was not being social or polite, but the waited kept his cool and didn't seem to mind. (Publicly.) Okay, time for food. Food: For appetizers, we ordered clams and ate those up. 20/10, delicious. Next, we all ordered. I ordered basic alfredo, it was great. Avery got her food and didn't like it, but that's because she ordered food too old for her. Everyone was satisfied. The only thing for me was we ordered steak bites, and there were only around 8. With a skimpy portion of mashed potatoes, and for around.. $28? I really can't remember. But it was a good experience, I recommend it for the older age group though. (21+) read more

Have been to this restaurant twice and both times, I had to send food back. The calamari was brought out ten seconds after we ordered, so we knew it wasn't fresh. The salmon tasted like it had been left out for a period of time before being served and the flavor was so weird, bizarre, dirty that it was inedible. As far as the food, the salads was good, different from where I come from, but good. Will get again. Not a bread fan, but it was better than expected. The olives was good. Filet was spot on, the gravy was salty for my taste but the wife loved it. Spaghetti was different, not in a bad way. It was good just green instead of the typical red. Haha. Chicken was better than the noodles. Did get the carrot cake. It was okay. Don't mess with the ingredients and add crap that don't go in there but was moist and okay. Will try tiramisu next time. I thought Orso was either a Killer Whale or a Japanese expletive. Fine dining options in Anchorage are limited so I hoped this would be a nice find once I found it. The restaurant is huge. There is huge bar and a huge dining room downstairs and huge space upstairs all populated with woodsy decorative elements and woodsy diners. Think of the Main Dining Salon feeding a small Army on a Princess Cruise ship done in Craftsman style or Charles Lummis goes to sea. A loop of crooners, yes, as in Al Martino singing Spanish Thighs, gently wafts it's way through the room while you make room for the trencherman's sized portions you've ordered. The Staff: Accommodating and relaxed. So relaxed they forget half the things you've asked for or they promised. The offered Welcome Basket of house baked Flatbread welcomed someone else and no-showed at our table. Service is full, flat out Alaskan top speed. Slo-mo. Caveat: If you sit upstairs, the service will be even slower as the kitchen is downstairs and even though it's cheaper than going to the gym, they are a herd of Turtles. The Vibe: Like, who's who there? Cruise Shippers and Booze Sippers. The Anchorage elite and the visiting effete. The Bar Program: It's decent, with all the usual suspects made decently. My Whiskey Sour was strong like Moose. A stir or two settled it down as down it went. There was a nicer wine list of reasonably priced wines. I know because I had four of them. I am compelled at this point to share that the 2013 Alanera was a perfect slurp. The Chow Line: It is a large menu to plow through. Seafood forward and some of it is actually locally caught. Our Server thought "Seafood would probably be a good thing". He suggested a "Tower" to start. Choose wisely is the best advice here. As an appetizer for eight, a caddy of three plates eventually worked it's way to the table. This would have been right at home at a Baby Shower Brunch which is where it should've gone. There was a dish of crunchy breading coated Calamari-ettes scattered over a spread of Tartar Sauce underneath. Eat them quick lest they get soggy by the time you get to them. The Polenta with Steak Tips comes already soggy so there is no rush to get to this. It will remain gluey and sludgy when you work your way around to that plate. Finally, there was an Italian Flag of Fried Ravioli stuffed with Ricotta Cheese and covered by alternating stripes of Marinara and Pesto Sauces. I ate it because I could reach it. The Tower is nothing more than Frat Party finger food and in the end this Tower lacked much power. Next some Cauliflower arrived all steamed, then grilled and dusted with Paprika. It was serviceable as Vegetables are good. In the end this Cauliflower lacked much power. After the Apps had been downloaded, it was on to the Chopped Salad. We had asked for two orders to go with the Flatbread which had fled and never showed up. We got one Salad but one was enough as the kitchen sink pile of ingredients was insipid and in a word...boring. The Black Cod wrapped in Prosciutto and settled on Fingerling Potatoes which needed more time in the simmering pot as they were barely cooked had it's moments once you ate the fish. The Cod somehow managed to remain moist, sweet, and flaky and the salty Prosciutto provided a nice balance. I could go on ragging on the Spuds because complaining is fun, but they were overshadowed by the Cod which was dinner's highlight. So, if you order this, just quietly sit there and eat your Codpiece and leave the rest. The Seafood Mac 'n Cheese was a large baker's pan filled with Shrimp mini-bites, Dungeness Crab morsels, Red Crab flecks (were they red because they were embarrassed to be in this dish?), Bacon bits which were MIA, topped with Toasted Bread Crumbs and drizzled with Truffle Oil (which is always a waste of taste, and mostly never necessary). The whole Fusilli pasta pile was buried in Lobster Cream Sauce (Lobster hauled kicking and screaming through a vat of Cream) along with a hefty lode of White Cheddar and Fontina Cheese. I am sad to say that the entire chewy, gooey, cheesy mess was actually good. Okay, not so good if you're having your annual physical that same month. Who doesn't like a chewy, gooey, cheesy mess which also adequately describes being single and dating. The end game was a clump of Bread Pudding with Caramelized Pineapple (locally caught too?), Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Custard all drenched in Banana's Foster Rum Sauce. It was a chewy, gluey, Roux-y mess. They have the best clam chowder with chunks of salmon in it & that was the best clam chowder I've ever had. Our waitress Tory was so sweet & funny, she knows the menu like the back of her hand. First meal in Anchorage, Alaska. Came here at 455pm, after finding a 1 hour wait at next door Glacier Brewhouse. Asked about the happy hour appetizer specials, and the waitress said they only applied to people at the bar. We moved to the bar faster than my ex wife hanging up on a telemarketer. Ordered the $11 crabcakes , the $6 seafood deviled eggs, and the $9 fried calamari. These are normally $15, $8, and $14 respectively when ordered at the restaurant, or after 6pm in the bar. The breaded calamari tasted crisp, but not overdone. Calamari taste distinguishable from the breading, and not rubbery. Didn't care for the aioli sauce. Good portion size. The deviled eggs were a pair of hard boiled shelled eggs, stuffed with sockeye salmon and crab. Another good dish, but two eggs for $6? You get maybe at most a half ounce of a strip of crab and salmon in each egg. Two crabcakes, decent, but each with more stuffing than crab. I 've had much better crabcakes which were entirely of crab without the stuffing Overpriced even for $11, let alone $15. Ordered the $26 crab stuffed Alaskian rockfish. Plenty of crab including leg crab stuffed with spinach in a white fish with cooked buttered carrots on the side, all in a puree of cauliflower. Very tasteful dish, but the portion size was tiny, maybe 6" stuffed filet of fish. Cauliflower puree so good I could have licked the plate! We finished just as the bar was getting packed with two dozen people trying to beat the 6pm end of happy hour prices on appetizers. Glad this place is still around. It was closed for over a year and re-opened in the summer of 2022. Four of us ate here on a Thursday night and the place was packed. The ambiance is classy. By far one of the nicer restaurants in Anchorage. The service was a bit slow the night we went, but the food made up for it. I went with the lamb shank and the others opted for the rockfish and the halibut. The appetizer sampler was a nice offering to try everything, but very skimpy for the price. First of all everything was SO FREAKING GOOD, I really don't know why we were trying to go to glacier brewhouse. The Seafood Gemelli was my favorite this night. Not only is it pasta, but it comes with salmon, clams, rockfish, and shrimp. They definitely do not skimp on the seafood like some places. It was tossed in the best sauce on crack!!! Okay not on crack but it was SO GOOD. Take my word for it and just get it! The ORSO chowder is a clam chowder and it was perfectly thick while being tasty and filling. If you're ever craving some Boardwalk chowder in homer, I'd say this is a good substitute! I think the calamari was delicious, but it was definitely not the star along with the crispy ravioli. The ravioli had an interesting sauce on the side that wasn't my favorite and the ravioli filling had shrunk from being fried. The best appetizer was definitely the tenderloins! This was an appetizer flight so it was perfect to try what we wanted for half the price! My fiancé loved his Tuscany fettuccine! It was one of the best that he's had (aside from his own). We went here on their opening night after being shut down from Covid. They had a slightly new menu, same great service, nearly the same decor, and awesome cocktails. There were a couple things missing from the menu that we were a bit disappointed about, but I am still hoping some things that made Orso our favorite restaurant in town will come back. Pros: -Tuscan chicken fettuccine is even better than before -great service -great atmosphere -delicious crispy raviolis -delicious cocktails and beer (especially elderflower martinis) Cons: -higher prices...substantially. The appetizers are more expensive, and dinner items are more expensive -no more baked seafood Mac & Cheese- this was literally my whole family's favorite meal -no more appetizer tower- this was perhaps most disappointing -no more hummus with the bread -no more happy hour for appetizers and drinks All and all, we were happy with the re-opening and will be back, but less often then we used to due to price increase and many of our favorites being gone. Oh Orso! I always love our visits, but my bank account disagrees... Let's start here, it's been a few years since my last visit, as the world was falling apart. Thankfully, wonderful places like Orso have survived the pandemic and I was delighted to meet some lovely friends here to celebrate summer and the recent solstice. Being super old people, we made reservations for 5 pm 'cause most of us have an 8 pm bedtime. Pro-tip: Being downtown, Orso can get packed with tourists at odd times, so I always make a reservation just to be safe. We arrived early to snag some street parking (parking can be a pain in this part of downtown), then waited for a few minutes while they opened up - the host was lovely, greeting us and letting us know they'd seat us shortly. In the meantime, we scoped out the cocktail menu - definitely do this! Orso has some wonderful cocktail options, and they feature local distilleries and breweries. Once our dining companions arrived, we indulged in two of the martini tastings - one with 3 types of local vodkas, the other with 3 types of local gins. Each one was distinct, sometimes floral, sometimes spicy, sometimes with a lovely glacier crisp-ness. If you have enough people to try all of the above (and not end up completely snockered), DO IT. Next up, we tried the sampler for a round of apps while we decided on entrees - this was a lovely stacked set-up, similar to dim sum, but these stacks included toasted raviolis (my favorite), calamari and steak tips. The calamari wasn't quite as good as it used to be (sadly), but the steak tips were so popular, that I didn't even get to try them! I finally decided on the stuffed rockfish for an entree, which is usually my go-to because 1. I adore Alaskan rockfish, and 2. They stuff it with crab (whoo-hoo!). I was not disappointed, as the entree delivered everything I wanted - juicy, flaky whitefish lightly breaded and stuffed with crab and crab cake stuffing, all melding into a delicious and perfectly Alaskan bite. My dining companions had a mix of either salmon or pasta, all served with local vendors (Alaska Pasta Company's fresh pasta is NOT to be missed - I always buy a few bags of ravioli and gemelli at the South Anchorage farmers market). We also had to order dessert - one cremes brûlée and one chocolate lava cake to share, both of which were the perfectly sweet ending to a fantastic dinner. Sadly, this is also when the check arrived, and also when we arrive to my only complaint: at roughly $400, or $100/person, this is an indulgence my bank account will only allow once in a blue moon. It was fun trying locally distilled spirits and will look for a couple of them in our local liquor stores. The trio of appetizers was excellent! The beef tenderloin bite were tender and beautifully seasoned. The calamari was the best I have ever tasted! I usually skip the squiggly parts but they were exceptional!!! Tender and succulent! Tried a few small plates from the bar menu and they were mostly underwhelming. The crab cakes were not crispy, barely warm, did not contain very much crab and tasted pedestrian. Tenderloins tips arrived on a large plate but the few pieces on the plate were soft but not tender and seemed to be overwhelmed by the other ingredients and the slightly sweet sauce. Cod slider was good but not jaw-dropping extraordinary. Calamari was well breaded but tasted rubbery and just slightly crispy and a little boring after a few bites. It's been two years since I came last. Honestly it was good but nothing made me go wow. Two eggs for 8 bucks? They are good yes but not worth $4 each. A way to fix this huge frustration for many would be to put the quantity on the menu. I got the Steak and lobster, it was a shrimp size and only 1/2. Was also a challenge to get out of the shell. The steak was a cute bit size morsel. Honestly I felt cheated because I would hope that when you pay $48 you would feel full after eating. The steak was nothing special and deserved a larger portion. The shrimp size lobster was sad. You can get more for less most places in town. I won't be back for that item ever. Cattle company offers this same set up but you get quite a bit more for the same cost also they have a coupon in the mail almost every month. My girlfriend got the pasta and it was nothing special. We took some home and when we reheated we realized it was filled with mass amounts of oil. Also didn't reheat well. We went on a Tuesday night, not crazy busy but you could hear and see panic in the servers. They continued to discuss and complain about a party of 20 that made them move a group that was in the private dining area. This was funny to watch but was kinda distracting from the meal I came for. I would have liked to be in a quieter area as we reserved a table online and got placed in the middle of all the action. Desert was taken Togo Lava cake was good and tasted great. The tiramisu was also delicious. The best desert is the bread pudding but we wanted to try something new. 3 stars because the staff was good but nothing great. The food was a 2 it tasted good but a meal that is almost $100 should be better than going to most places. Honestly we could have gone to many of the downtown locations and had a better experience. Dinner was delicious! I ordered the chicken fettuccine. Noodles were perfect and white sauce wasn't too heavy. Chunks of white meat chicken was tasty. Portion was perfect and service excellent. Ambiance was nice, seated 15 minutes after reservations, waiter was friendly salad great but took 1hr 15 mins to get our main course. Chicken was burnt on the fettuccine leaving whole dish with that burnt flavor, was only able to eat about 1/4 before the flavor was just to much to eat more. My husband had the chicken parm and it was also very overcooked and dry. Desert was good. Overall very disappointing especially since we were celebrating our 32 anniversary. read more

Vegetarian and gluten-free menu available upon request. Limited vegan options, but it can be done as follows... The vegetarian Fettuccine Alfredo can be made vegan and gluten-free by replacing the sauce with marinara and the pasta with the gluten-free noodles. The veggies are well suited for this shift; asparagus, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes pair well with the marinara. My husband got this dish as-is (vegetarian, full of gluten) and enjoyed it just as much as I enjoyed the vegan, gluten-free version. The Crispy Cauliflower appetizer is made with dairy and gluten. It is a standard fried vegetable and could use a spicy aioli or a cool cucumber/dill dipping sauce. The portion is small, but not unfair. The Harvest Salad (minus chevre) was great. The balsamic vinaigrette is made with dairy, so our server recommended the champagne vinaigrette. WOW! What a zinger! It's pungent and delightful. I would add kalamata olives to this salad because they really compliment the strawberry/champagne vibe, but other than that, it's perfect. The blood orange cosmo is good, but they make em better (fresher?) at Whale's Tail. The bloody mary is a great house-mix with a perfect garnish: pickled asparagus, cocktail onion, green olive. I could use more spice in the mix, but the base flavor is excellent. Gluten-free Omission Lager is available too! You'd never know it, but there is a vegan, gluten-free dessert that is not on the menu! Ask for the Wildberry Sorbet ;) My husband tried the cheesecake, which came with a fried cheddar garnish. His mind was blown and his pupils blew up with pleasure as he ate every bite. The prices here are very high, even for Alaska, so I'm hoping that all the food is organic, local, etc - but I doubt it. If you're ready to drop $200 on good food and semi-upscale ambiance for a party of 4, by all means, check this place out. But before I dine here again I'll have to be assured that they have expanded their menu to include a truly vegan section, and that their prices reflect some seriously local/organic/etc ingredients. read more
