Sorrento's has been an Anchorage staple for 52 years, but apparently they only started serving lunch a few months ago -- and I'm really glad I wandered in. I was looking for a quiet place to eat good food, have a beer, and zone out for a minute. Sorrento's at lunch is the spot.I happened to be the only dine-in customer, so I basically got first-class service, which I have a feeling happens no matter how busy they are. The place is clean and a little dated, but in the absolute best, nostalgic way. It feels like an old-school neighborhood restaurant that has earned the right not to reinvent itself every five years. No trendy gimmicks, no loud music, no rush -- just a comfortable place to take a load off in the middle of a busy day and actually enjoy lunch. And the food fit the place perfectly: simple, quick and flavorful. Not a lot of frills, but that's the thing about consistent, old-school eateries -- they don't need them. I had the lamb gyro with a fresh salad, and it was exactly what I wanted. Fresh, satisfying and just plain good. This was my first time at Sorrento's, which seems almost ridiculous considering how long they've been part of Anchorage. While we were in Anchorage, Sorrentos came up as a suggestion for an Italian restaurant to go to and the ratings were extremely good (4-5) so being a seasoned yelper, writing many reviews, I wanted to give Sorrentos a try. The restaurant has a nice set up with tables a booth's. We were a party of 4and our server was Marylou. Marylou s great handling our table making suggestions and with her timing of our food. We ordered fried calamari appetizer which was good. It wasn't a large dish and there were no Calamari "rings" on our plate, only strips which was a little surprising, but we enjoyed them. We also each got a nice salad before our dinners. I ordered the Ceaser salad which was delicious. I asked Marylou for a small (3) amount of anchovies to put on the salad. She came with a dish with I guess a can full of them. Not her fault, she stated that she had to make it a side order do that was hire it was done. No problem, I love anchovies and since they were there, I was not going to let them go to waste!!! lol! Dinner then was broght to the table, here is where the review is lowered to 3 stars. My wife and friends ordered this chicken dish (sorry don't recall the name, I think it was Marsala) and it was delicious and a nice serving. My friend also got the chicken parm which he enjoyed. However, my order was nothing like I was expecting. When I go to an Italian restaurant, I usually order Veal Parmigiana. This is my go to favorite. When my veal arrived, it looked totally not what I was expecting. The menu says veal scallopini lightly breaded and fried. Scallopini is a thing cut of meat. What I got was 2 ground veal patties (like hamburger) covered in sauce and topped with cheese. I started to eat it and immediately safe that this was not veal cutlet (scallopini) and ground veal. For the price I was paying, I was not going to accept this so I sent the dish back. Marylou was so nice about it and took care of me without a problem. She was kind of surprised about the dish as well. She gave me reasons why it was served the way it was but I will not share them here. If the menu says Scallopini (cutlet) then that is what should be served. Don't change it up on the customer hoping to pass it off as a Veal Parmigiana dish. Maybe being from NY I have a different expectation about this but I don't think that is the case here. I ordered the lasagna instead which was ok. Again, our service was great and the food was good as well except for my dish and this is why I am giving them 3 stars, which I rarely give. read more

My husband and I went for our anniversary dinner, it was his first time and I've been years previously as a child and in the best way everything was the same. Lovely cozy atmosphere, incredible food, and amazing service. They do not do reservations, it's walk in only, we went on a Sunday around 4 and were seated immediately. I got the Fettuccine Arrabbiata with scampi, he got the ravioli and the garlic bread is so delicious and light and crispy. Everything was incredible, our waitress provided impeccable service and she took a few photos of us and which we appreciated. I also want to say that their pizzas are amazing they use a special pizza oven and the crust is next level, next time we go that's what we plan to grab, maybe to go as I learned they now offer. read more

My husband and family have been going to Sorrento's since 1981. We have never had a bad meal or bad service. Every trip to Sorrento's is like coming home. My favorite go-to is spaghetti and meatballs. My husband has to have the spaghetti napolitana. Our young adults go for pizza. Any of it.? You won't be disappointed! The staff is always fantastic. An amazing surprise! Hit this place up on a whim while visiting. Great food, exceptional service and it didn't break the bank. I had the halibut with lobster cream sauce smothered in mushrooms n almond slices as an entree, garlic bread and a salad. I was hungry but not starving and devoured it all. So much yum. Thank you. I picked up the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken for lunch. It was a good sized portion but I'm not sure if it's the same as dinner. The noodles were a perfect al dente. The sauce was rich and creamy and there was plenty of chicken which was tender. Everything was well seasoned. It came with a side of garlic bread that appeared to be a whole loaf. A local eatery in midtown Anchorage serving Italian food. People were waiting in line at the bar to be seated and the parking lot was full. The decor is old world classic Italian but the service was on point. My husband had the lasagne with a side of minestrone soup while I had pasta carbonara with a green salad. We were served garlic bread as well. My pasta was delicious and the leftovers were as well. There was no leftover lasagne- lol. For dessert, we split a piece of cheesecake made with ricotta and topped with strawberries. A nice find for sure. Oh- and a decent wine list too!! read more

This was the worse Italian food in Anchorage. I ordered the Chicken à la SORRENTO, along with a chicken parmigiana to go. The chicken à la sorrento did not look anything like the photo on line. It was 3 dried out grilled breasts with spaghetti on the side. No flavor in any of it. The parmigiana was equally as flavorless. Salad was a joke as well. I called when I got home thinking they made a mistake, all they said was sometimes the photos do not represent the meal. When we lived on west side, this was one of our favorite places for a quiet romantic meal. Then we sort of fell out of love with this place. We decided to revisit and see where it sat with is now. We went two weeks ago and I'm sitting here now to write this review and neither of us can remember what we got. Our takeaway is ... average. They took a very long time to wait on us. People who were seated after us got waiting on us first. That is a common theme when someone on your party is not white. Wanna see me not return to a place. That will do it. We got a pepperoni pizza with mushrooms and olives and stuffed mushrooms. The mushrooms were tiny and the filling was mush and overpowering. The pizza crust was cooked fine but thr toppings were not cooked through, the sauce was too acidic, and the cheese felt gloppy. Even the pepperoni wasn't cooked properly so the fat didn't render. We had a great time at Sorrentos. We came on a Monday night for my moms birthday. They are open 7 days a week and only for dinner. They were busy, as not a lot of restaurants are open on Mondays, good thing they are!! We waited ten minutes, they don't take reservations) and then we were seated after waiting. They dont really have a waiting area so we were awkwardly standing in the hallway. We were seated and our waiter was nice and prompt. There were waters already set at the table and he took our drink orders. They only have beer and wine for alcohol. The waiter took a little bit to come back and take our food orders. We all got salads with our meals except for the pizza order. An up charge of 3.50 I think for Caesar or Greek, I got the Greek which was pretty good. For dinner I got the fettuccini Alfredo with scampi. There were a lot of shrimp! I did find a piece of shell in my leftovers. Fresh parm and cream for the sauce, it was very good. The noodles were nice, and not crazy long so it was easy to eat. They were like bite sized lengthwise almost. We didn't get our garlic bread until after our dinners came, they might have been backed up with the bread as I thought they would have brought it to us with our salads. Didn't get to go very far into the dining area, but it was a little dim inside, they had a little fireplace across the way. They even give you Andes mints with the check which was nice! No longer need to go to OG! lol this place has been in Anchorage for over 50 years, they seem to be a great, local restaurant that serves good Italian food. read more

Stopped by here on our way to the airport. Arrived around 6:15 on a Monday and had a 25 minute wait. Place is an old school restaurant. Dark with booths and tables with a light above each table. We ordered the regular and Greek dinner salad. Both were good but the Greek came with a lot of vegetables. Good salad. I ordered the portobello chicken with Marsala sauce. The chicken was perfectly grilled covered in cheese and sauce. They also gave me a lot of mushrooms which I enjoyed. My wife liked her eggplant. Nice pieces of eggplant covered in cheese and sauce. Our waiter was ok. Not much of a personality compared to the other waiters around us. read more

Trivia: What delicious morsel will your mouth be treated to moments after the check arrives? Trivia#2: Are shrimp and scampi synonymous? (I actually didn't know the answer and it set me on a side adventure of research. I love learning new things!) Ambiance: Bring a date here if you're looking for something fancy. Bring them around 3 pm on a Saturday and you'll have the whole place to yourselves. Service: Possibly my biggest pet peeve in a restaurant is when you are rushed through the courses. Before you have a chance to eat your appetizer, your salad arrives. Before the salad is complete, there's the server walking out with the entrees. It's the unnerving feeling where you think, "where do I put this?" But NOT HERE! I felt like I was able to slowly enjoy each component of the meal. My Greek salad was amazing. And I was able to finish it at a slow pace, the plate was cleared from the table, I took a sip of my wine, and voila!, the food arrived. Food: Every moment of the meal was delicious. From the ranch to the marinara, to the light breading on the zucchini that allowed for both the flavors of the breading and the flavors of the zucchini to pop. In my pasta arrabbiatta, I particularly liked that the scampi was cut into smaller chunks. It meant there were more of those tasty morsels distributed throughout the pasta. I'm giving this restaurant a 5 because the ambiance and service alone is wonderful. It's such a cozy spot on a chilly snowy day. You arrive into a low lit, classy yet casual vibe, so inviting. Great for a romantic date or a family dinner. The seafood stuffed mushrooms with lobster sauce worth it!! The pizza was fresh and delicious. Get the sun dried tomatoes on the pizza, yum! Now you ask Why not 5 Stars , the reason was the service was a tinch slow but in our case it just gave us more time to catch up with everything. Came here on a Wednesday nights. Reasonable time to wait for our table for 2people (@15 minutes). They had alot of take out orders to fulfill so they were busy. Had the stuffed mushrooms with butter on the side. Honestly it tasted liked breaded mushrooms and not mushrooms stuffed with seafood. I tried the Diablo scampi with linguini. It wasn't as spicy as I would have liked. In fact there was hardly any spice. I highly recommend the red blend of the house wine. It's deliciouso! And I also recommend switching out the house salad for the Greek salad because it's like a meal-very substantial. read more

Slacked off and didn't take any pictures. However, our experience was quite nice. Our server was nice and the place was pretty dimly lit, with a spot light on each table, so you can see what you're eating. Hubby ordered the Taste of Sorrento, which had Alfredo, lasagna and grilled chicken. He enjoyed it. I did taste the grilled chicken and it was quite delicious and juicy. I opted for the chicken parmesan, which was also good, not dry at all. It came with a side of spaghetti, which was well-cooked. Our orders came with either a soup or salad, we both had salads that tasted fresh. We also got garlic bread, which was pretty bomb! I almost didn't want to share it. Initially, I was hoping we had some bread and olive oil/butter while waiting for our food, but honestly, I was full by the time I finished my meal. Bruschetta is one of those dishes that you never know what is going to be. This was baguette with marinated tomatoes. It was good. Chicken piccata and Fettuccine di Mare with Arrabiatta were really good as well as Greek salad. Wednesday at 7 they were very busy with 25 minutes wait and a fairly long wait for service and food but it's understandable when the house is full. Good indication that the locals love it. My folks introduced me to this restaurant. They have one of the best Italian style pizzas in Anchorage. The Pete's Special is one of my favorites. I decided to dine in here, having mostly ordered pizza to go. I had their Fettuccine Alfredo with Scampi. I asked for Angel Hair pasta because I prefer thinner noodles. The sauce was really delicious. It was creamy, and not as greasy as I thought it was going to taste, and there was plenty of shrimp thrown in. I had their side Greek salad with their delicious red onion vinaigrette house dressing. I always order extra of it because it's so good! The waitress, a woman with glasses in her 50s, who has worked at Sorrento's for a long time, gave great service. She's was checking up on me and making sure I had everything I needed. She suggested I try one of the desserts, so I ordered the Tiramisu Cake and it was dripping with deliciousness! It's very moist and you can tell it was made with care. Great little Italian restaurant! We didn't have to wait on a Sunday evening to be seated. Not a ton of tables, so you're not jam packed in there. Dark atmosphere but good lights over the tables so you can read the menu. The house red wine was delicious, with a good pour! The escargot was ok, but I'm not sure if I'd order it again. The ceasar salad was decent. We ordered the fettuccine dish with spicy alfredo, mushrooms, garlic, and onions, as well as the small Sorrento special pizza. Impressively large portions and delicious entrees. We were too full to order dessert or coffee at the end. We will definitely be back, and I would say this will be one of our staple restaurants in the future. Our waitress was very kind and attentive. We have known of this establishment for years. We did pick up during COVID. The food was very good but, not the same as having it fresh Last night we decided to eat in. We started our evening with the Trio, appetizer and the stuffed mushrooms . The mozzarella sticks, were definitely house made. Our entrees were the seafood pasta for the wife. She really enjoyed it. She said the white sauce was rich and creamy. I had the spaghetti with the Italian ham. It was very fresh and the white sauce was outstanding . Our dinner ended with peanut butter pie and cheesecake. It was a nice way to finish the evening. The prices were very reasonable for this fine dinner. Our server, Gween was outstanding. She was very friendly and attentive to our needs.
