My kids and their friends can't get enough of the Black + Whites, Chocolate Chip Cookies and Rugelach (Apple Honey Cake is my go-to!), but my favorites are 100% the Green Goddess sandwich - so fresh and healthy, on that amazing multi-grain bread - and the West Coast Breakfast is divine too (avo + arugula, what could be better on a toasted bagel w cc?) especially as the summer heats up. O. M. G. I was looking for a good black and white cookie for my son as his thing in NYC. This was it!!! The cookie was large, perfectly iced, and very cakey. We also got a chocolate chip cookie and it might have been the best of my life. The bag claims since 1916 and I can see why it would be around for over 100 years! Yes their chocolate chip cookie is amazing. Super buttery and decadent, chewy with a lightly crunchy edge--if that's the style of cookie you prefer. First of all...I LOVE Orwashers and have immensely enjoyed their raisin bread, black and white cookies, and their sandwiches, The one star is given for false advertising of the price of their sandwiches. I visited the shop on Monday and purchased their advertised New York Breakfast that I "thought" cost $12.75...however, when the person who took my order...who was also the cashier...and she also was the one who made the sandwich rang me up, the bill was over $16. I said I think there was a mistake, that sandwich is $12.75 and even with tax, it would not cost over $16. She looked at her register...then she looked behind her at the hanging menu sign listing the items and the prices, and then said, "I will tell the manager - that is the price...$14.75 not 12.75 plus tax. At that point, the cashier should have charged me the advertised price...but she did not. Then, I received my sandwich and was disappointed in both the quality of the bagel and the meager amount of lox. I emailed the manager(?) and was given a nice response saying that the new signs with the higher prices were going to be installed soon...just unacceptable as an answer. Obviously, if the menu/price signs were not ready when the computer/cash register was re-programmed...then the "old" prices should have been honored by your customers. read more

Completely incorrect order, no cheese on an egg and cheese and the quality was very poor.

Had the pistachio chocolate croissant, advertised as having been "seen on CBS NY." While the pictures made it look fluffier and taller, the actual thing was shorter. The croissant texture was decent, and the pistachio insides were clever, as they were sugared and crisped with pistachio nut. I think there needed to be more pistachio flavoring though. read more

Been to Orwashers several times since I visit family in the area. Every single time I'm greeted with the same terrible, rude, attitudes by the staff. Not once, have I had a friendly service experience here. That being said, I do like some of their things enough to overlook that but I am writing this review in hopes of management addressing their rude staff. Their babkas is one of the best, I really like their breads and the donuts are so so. The cookies are really good as well. From the moment it's your turn you feel rushed and awkward as you may be still looking at the many displays and not know exactly what you want and they give a "what do you want, hurry up" attitude. I winded up being scared to ask for the bread I really wanted and got their prepackaged buns as I felt like I was a bother. I know that sounds ridiculous but as someone with social anxiety already, a rude staff member will literally result in me buying less things if I'm not comfortable asking. Wouldn't even mind if they offered some type of mobile ordering service so I don't have to interact with rudeness anymore. read more

I admit all the breads and over priced shmears and salads look great. I'm giving my low rating based on one very wrong order. But then why does a place like this serve something so overcooked, overheated and mediocre ? And terrible. I talk of the ham cheese and egg on a brioche bun for a $10. It's so unimaginative. So boring. So overnuked. It's not a sandwich it's a punishment. Also the coffee was served cold. I dunno. I stopped in early yesterday afternoon and asked the cashier if the baguette was sourdough. She responded curtly that it was a baguette. I mentioned that some places make sourdough baguettes, but she seemed uninterested and directed me to the sliced sourdough instead. The food and drinks here are good, but the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. Out of the 6 times I've visited, 5 experiences were marked by unfriendly or inattentive service. Even when placing a pickup order, you're often stuck waiting in a long line. And if there's no line, the staff behind the counter usually won't acknowledge you unless you actively get their attention. Interestingly, delivery workers seem to have free access to the kitchen to grab their orders, while regular customers are left waiting to be noticed. read more

I've been searching for a proper bakery that makes daily bread that is fresh and well made. And I've given this place SEVERAL chances and it just disappoints over and over again. I truly do not understand the appeal or why it's such a popular local spot. I find the baked goods to be non complex, flavorless and extremely dry. Like how is this even possible, even for a simple focaccia or a classic small baguette? In addition to the poor quality, I really do not believe the staff members enjoy working there as they are typically abrasive and very non customer friendly. The rude behavior towards customers is something that would be studied as I have witnessed staff members speaking to people with such dislike and hostility. If anyone wants better baked goods, a couple of blocks away there is Zabars which has glorious breads that are 100% better. read more

I'd love to see them scale up production or prioritize neighborhood regulars to match their stellar baking with better availability. Nothing to complain about, nothing to write home about, either. A sweet cafe with nice looking baked goods and decent coffee. There's a good amount of seating both inside and out, which is nice, and relatively rare. My macchiato was good and came out quickly. We enjoyed bagels after the Macy's Thanksgiving parade - it was understandably busy - our bagels were very good. Really enjoyed the New York Breakfast (Everything bagel, Dill cream cheese, Lox, onion) and the rest of the crew ordered bagel sandwiches with an egg - which they reported (and looked like )they were delivered from Sysco - rubbery/processed. Can't speak for the coffee, as they were so slow and backed up I didn't want to wait to get any, but I tried a chocolate scone and almond croissant, neither were fantastic. The croissant especially was dry without much actual almond flavor. The scone was fine, but not worth waiting in line and dealing with the grumpy staff on a Saturday morning around 10am. My friends love cookies from Orwashers so much. They brought us a couple of times and we finally had a chance to visit there. The options were in a great variety and the staff was friendly. We got a slice of Sticky Roll Babka, one Almond Croissant and 2 packs of Granola. The price was decent and the portion was reasonable as an artisan bakery. We love the Almond Croissant, the filling was creamy with crispy layers, it was amazingly delicious. The Babka wasn't our type, the walnut was off-balanced in proportion with the Babka itself in our opinion. I've lived on the Upper West Side and now on the Upper East Side and purchased their baked products at both locations for years. They supply their delicious breads to local eateries too. I've never had a meal at this location. I'm buying my breads and pastries and leaving. I do prefer the location on the Upper East Side. They have given me a free sample to try before I purchase. So far my favorite is their Black and White Cookie. The loaves of bread are excellent too. It's all good! I'm recommending if you visit NYC you stop in for a muffin, cookie, or croissant.
