Really nice experience! I got a breakfast sandwich. My only qualm was that as any celiac knows, you can only get store bought bagels in plain, everything, and cinnamon raisin. I came here excited to have another flavor only to discover they carry only those three flavors. When I asked the cashier about the bagel of the day she said there wasn't one. After we ordered I then realized that they had both salt bagels and blueberry bagels. Why did she not tell us that? We also tried to order a cheese bun because we saw them on trays having just been removed from the oven. However the staff member told us they were out of cheese buns. The sandwich was great. The tomato jam was generously applied and they weren't stingy with the avocado. The challah and babka were both really nice! The challah is on the sweet side. I bet both would be even better microwaved. They have a bit of a gluten free vibe to the texture still, but are overall great compared to store bought. Our lattes came out quickly. No utensils, and they don't give napkins with your order. Bathroom is not very accessible. High sink, no hooks or grab bars. No seating for breakfast or lunch. I understand a fully gluten-free operation has some higher costs associated so I expected the bagel to be $4 instead of the regular $2 elsewhere. I wasn't expecting a $8 bagel + cream cheese. I got the egg salad on my bagel and they put such a tiny amount of it, with no flavor or seasoning. The bagel itself was dense and with the egg salad option, it also lacked creaminess or flavor. The line is also really long on a Sunday and they are clearly understaffed. Only two people behind the counter and about 20 people in line. There's also no place to sit and eat your sandwich hot - after paying up so much you at least expect to enjoy it fresh. There's one bench inside but it's occupied by people waiting on their order. Modern Bread and Bagel is a playground if you have celiac. All of my panic over crumbs, gloves and hands melts away as I remind myself it's ok, the gluten is not welcome in this space. I feel a wash of overwhelm when I get to decide from an entire menu. Call is cheese ball, but I literally get teary eyed here. I have to wait extraordinary amounts of time for a true deep fried donut since gf donuts are usually baked for convenience. The strawberry donut is an absolute magical experience for me. It's the top of my to do list when I come into manhattan with my family. I fell a bit healed inside of all the BS limitations of celiac and I just get to enjoy a donut that feels like a treat and doesn't taste like a work around. Modern Bread and Bagel makes me feel seen. I can't say the bagels are the same as the gluten alternatives, but they are damn good, the baked goods are superb. No, I am not sharing a bite, this is my self care. Delighted to realize this was a complete GF establishment when we came on. Super allergy friendly and pretty knowledgeable staff. However the bagel was soggy and the seasoning tasted different from a normal everything bagel that I know. The French toast was pretty good but I didn't like coffee sauce at all. This used to be my favorite bagel spot but the service is horrible. On my last 2 visits (there won't be another) they messed up my standard order (no requested modifications). In one of those visits they messed it up 3x and finally asked me if they could just give me the fixings on the side, so that I could remake the sandwich myself. In the other visit, they forgot the order altogether. I'm giving one star because they did grant a refund when I requested it. This was my favorite vegan bagel I tried in ny!! I got the sesame bagel with carrot lox and tofu scallion spread. I've never tried carrot lox on a bagel so this was something new that I quite enjoyed. I can't recall the latte I ordered, but it was really good. My mom ordered the Mexican mocha, which she liked but noted that the cayenne made the drink a bit spicy for her. Just something to note if others have lower spice tolerance. This place is just mid. I think it's pretty overrated. I expressed excitement when the cashier informed me that every item in the store was gluten-free and the cashier mocked me to another customer in return. Nice. We paid $29 for two bagels with strawberry cream cheese and two iced coffees. The bagels were a massive disappointment and the coffee ranked among the worst I've ever had. They toasted the absolute bejeezus out of the bagels. When I unwrapped them, they were small and flat and so hot that they had completely melted all of the strawberry cream cheese. It was soup. Dripped everywhere. The cream cheese was also very warm in temperature. No cold, creamy substance to it at all. The bagels were cut and wrapped in two halves, which I also did not request. Definitely not worth $9, much less the $29 we paid for this below average New York experience. PEANUT/SOME* TREE NUT allergy friendly. They really should advertise this. They do use almond but this place is fully safe for a peanut allergy sufferer. I am very overdue in writing a review because I love it here . Baked goods are delicious-- especially the babka and the chocolate chip cookie. Although my favorite is probably the carrot muffin. Strange, I know. But it's delicious. Also, DANNY is absolutely fantastic. Knowledgeable about allergies and he has the warmest and friendliest personality. March specials are for me since many are made with coconut! I didn't love them though. I went during lunch yesterday (a Friday) and it was very busy. I ordered a whitefish sandwich on an everything bagel $15.50. It took at least 15 minutes for me to get the sandwich. Quite a few people waiting for orders and almost all seats on the benches were taken (there are no tables). It wasn't a bad sandwich but not my favorite. There are some nice chunks of fish in the salad. I ordered a coconut white chocolate latte, a March special, for $7.50. They didn't charge extra for it to be iced. I enjoyed the latte even if it was a bit too sweet. Then I ordered a piece of pineapple coconut babka $6.95 and a coconut white chocolate bundt cake $7.50. I don't love either one. When I took a bite of the babka the exterior tasted like there was paper attached to it. There were bits of coconut in it but not much pineapple flavor. The Bundt cake was super crumbly. Not sure how the white chocolate was incorporated. On a previous visit I got a loaf of bread. Unfortunately forget what it was called; it was a white bread of some sort. It was best eaten toasted. I tried a cinnamon roll slice. Way too sugary!!! If it didn't taste like I was eating a cup of sugar it would've been really good. read more

We waited 20 minutes for our one chocolate bobka, which was too long for an already made dish. Not much seating inside, as there's just a long bench alongside the line, but you can eat outside at their tables (beware random swarms of bees though), or in Central Park. There's a separate, faster line for takeout if you wanna order online or via phone. Line moves pretty fast, and they typically just yell your name once your order is ready. I almost always get the BEC and it never disappoints. Definitely recommend their latke tots if you haven't tried them already. I recently placed a group order for delivery from Modern Bread and Bagel on a weekend morning and it came 15 minutes after it was initially projected to arrive when we ordered. Modern Bread and Bagel also messed up part of our order, sending a plain cinnamon raisin bagel instead of a smashed avocado toast. To Modern Bread and Bagel's credit, they refunded the charge for the smashed avocado toast the same day when we notified them. My cacio e pepe babka was unique and delicious, if a bit on the salty side. I could barely taste the pastrami seasoning on my lox and the lox was very salty. This place is a really reliable location for fresh gluten free food. I would say my favorite thing if I were to come here in the morning would be their bagel. Plenty of room for seating inside and outside tables and service is friendly. I would say that the line is a bit confusing inside as it's just a wide space in the middle with no sign, but they can make fresh sandwiches if you prefer that over bagel and cream cheese. There was some seating against the wall but not a place you would want to bring a laptop or book. The service was a little slow for the morning. I tried this place for the first time today. Mixed feelings. Bagels - good! Chewy, tasty, flavorful. Actually pretty amazing when you think about them being gluten free. I got a BYO sandwich with an everything bagel, veggie cream cheese, and tomato, arugula, and pickled onion. It was good but there was SO LITTLE CREAM CHEESE. If you're used to getting bagels with shmear anywhere else, just know that they barely put any on here. It seemed like a 1-2mm layer on one side only. My brother enjoyed the lightness of the cream cheese, and he got lox with it (+$8) which was a good amount. Drinks - SUCK. I got a london fog latte. I tried it soon after getting it and it burned my tongue. Once it cooled down enough to drink, it just tasted like watery tea. Super disappointing considering it was $5.50. It seemed like they just threw a tea bag in to a cup of boiling water and added a splash of frothy milk. Based on this one drink, I would never order any other drink here. It was very telling. Baked goods - some great, others okay? Apple fritter and chocolate zucchini bread - super flavorful, moist, would totally get again. The zucchini bread was more like a delightful piece of chocolate cake. Chocolate rugelach, chocolate babka, and cinnamon roll - all were fine but pretty dense and none were things I wanted to eat a lot of.
