Stopped in on our way to the museum for a quick breakfast, had a cinnamon bagel with cream cheese and our friends ordered egg sandwich specials posted on the board outside and which they thoroughly enjoyed. My bagel was just ok, not you usual nyc bagel, it was dense and heavy to eat. Hubby had a smoked salmon sandwich which he said was just as alright. There's a long bench to sit on as you wait for your order.

Modern Bread and Bagel is a playground if you have celiac. All of my panic over crumbs, gloves and hands melts away as I remind myself it's ok, the gluten is not welcome in this space. I feel a wash of overwhelm when I get to decide from an entire menu. Call is cheese ball, but I literally get teary eyed here. I have to wait extraordinary amounts of time for a true deep fried donut since gf donuts are usually baked for convenience. The strawberry donut is an absolute magical experience for me. It's the top of my to do list when I come into manhattan with my family. I fell a bit healed inside of all the BS limitations of celiac and I just get to enjoy a donut that feels like a treat and doesn't taste like a work around. Modern Bread and Bagel makes me feel seen. I can't say the bagels are the same as the gluten alternatives, but they are damn good, the baked goods are superb. No, I am not sharing a bite, this is my self care. If you have celiac buy a plane ticket and try the strawberry donut. Worth the trip.

I've been waiting to visit this place forever and I finally got my opportunity one rainy New York morning lol. I walked in the cold and the rain to secure a bagel and baked goods and I'm a fan! Delicious food, friendly snd pleasant service. Definitely someplace I'd return to and recommend to others. Love, love that they have gluten free.

Delighted to realize this was a complete GF establishment when we came on. Super allergy friendly and pretty knowledgeable staff. Not really a sit and eat spot, not the nicest inside but they come through with their food. Staff were mostly helpful and friendly, albeit a bit abrasive and rushing. Got the G'day Mate on an Everything bagel, which is gluten and dairy free. It was very good! The bagel was quite salty but super tasty and satisfying. And it was a GF DF bagel sandwich in NY, so I was so happy!

Pretty sure I selected "toasted" not charred and burned to the extent that the sandwich is inedible. The person who prepared this saw that it was burned but they didn't care, and they decided that my money and my time doesn't matter and decided to still give me this anyway. Very sad. Will never order from here again.

Limited options on Bagels, but the ones they have are standard and good enough. Lines move slow-ish on Sunday's, but still effective. Cream cheese selections are amazing. Very high quality bagels. Is our local favorite when we are craving bagels!

I've found another strong addition to my ongoing NYC bagel research. They offer a variety of hot sandwiches, open-faced bagels, and baked goods.  Their bagels are incredibly fluffy. A major bonus: everything is gluten-free, with easy customization for dairy-free and vegan diets. B even if you're not gluten- or dairy-free, this place is still amazing. The shop was packed on a weekend, but the line moved quickly, and we got our orders within 10 minutes. Their uptown locations are conveniently close to museums, galleries, and Central Park. *Farmer's Garden $13.5 An open-faced bagel with heirloom tomato, cucumber, crispy capers, basil and dill. I chose a sesame bagel with chive cream cheese, which paired perfectly with a light drizzle of olive oil. It was super refreshing. Compared to the tomato bagel at Apollo Bagels, which I also loved for its crispy sourdough base, this one was much fluffier. Both are great in their own way, but this version felt lighter and juicier. *G'Day Mate $10.5 *The Big Show $11.5 The G'Day Mate was drizzled with harissa aioli which I really liked the spicy kick, while The Big Show was their vegan take on a classic SEC, made with vegan sausage. The portions were generous. The bagels were definitely filling, but not overwhelmingly massive like some other NYC bagels. We often find NY bagels a bit too big for one sitting.

For gluten free I'd say this place is decent. And the food is big and matches the price. The burrata bagel was yummy and I enjoyed all the flavors. However the bagel was soggy and the seasoning tasted different from a normal everything bagel that I know. The French toast was pretty good but I didn't like coffee sauce at all. The custard was pretty good.

An amazing selection if you're looking for gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. A big selection of delicious fresh baked goods, bagels, sandwiches, pasties, and coffee. I love the bacon, egg, and cheese bagel and their chocolate cupcakes. The friendly staff moves the line along well.

Seriously incredible gluten-free bagels!! I got the vegan lox and my husband got the classic. We were debating whether we wanted another bagel to go, but we opted for a glazed donut and a chocolate pastry. Service was somewhat slow (subpar if I'm being honest), but the bagels were worth the wait. We cannot WAIT to come back!

Got the All vegan bacon, egg and cheese on everything bagel and it was delicious. It was probably one of the biggest bagel sandwiches I've held in my hand. The service was quick and friendly. Wait time for the food was minimal and interior was very nice and modern they have a variety of cream cheese and pastries. Looking forward to coming back.

This was my favorite vegan bagel I tried in ny!! I got the sesame bagel with carrot lox and tofu scallion spread. I've never tried carrot lox on a bagel so this was something new that I quite enjoyed. I can't recall the latte I ordered, but it was really good. My mom ordered the Mexican mocha, which she liked but noted that the cayenne made the drink a bit spicy for her. Just something to note if others have lower spice tolerance. I'd definitely want to come back to try some of the vegan pastries they offer

What a fantastic place! Even the bathroom was a good experience! It's cute in here and the staff are super pleasant. The best part was how AMAZING the bagels tasted. Better than many gluten filled donuts I had pre-celiac. Absolutely amazing. Highly recommend getting a dozen - I wish I had!

    Do they have wifi here?

Not sure if they do or not. However, you will not be welcome to sit there and relax like u would at a Starbucks. They "encourage" u to order, eat and make room for the next patron.

Is a plain bagel vegan or is there egg/dairy in it?

Hi Daniel. There are eggs in the bagels at Modern Bread and Bagel but no dairy products.

I ordered a toasted gluten free bagel with cream cheese and what I got was cold and pale. I took a bite and it was disgusting. Many gluten free bread products need to be toasted to be edible which is why I always get them toasted. My receipt said toasted. The bagel was pale and cold. And falling apart. A different bagel store refused to sell their gluten free bagels untoasted. At least they didn't give me food that I couldn't eat. Liberty Bagels is one of the more famous places to get one. I opted against the six-year old part of my brain which wanted the kaleidoscope-y rainbow bagel and opted for an everything bagel with nova (which is different from lox - til) and scallion cream cheese. Firstly, the bagel was just great. It's not quite as crispy on the outside as the best I've had, but definitely does enough there. The golden brown color is absolutely there. And the inside is so fluffy and so easy to bite through - yet at the same time keeps the cream cheese at bay and prevents the two from merging. The everything on the everything bagel is not quite as 'everything' as I would want, but it's certainly everything enough. The nova is also fantastic. It's got that slightly fishy taste that lets you know its fresh without overpowering every bite. The salt levels are phenomenal - both from the bagel and the salmon. The portion of it could have been *slightly* bigger, but the taste was really great. I also loved the scallion cream cheese. It was only on one side, which was a little unfortunate, but the amount reached the perfect bagel/salmon/cream-cheese triumvirate of a ratio where everything blends perfectly together. The texture on this was just so creamy. The capers were nice, but some more red onions would've been ideal. For just around $17, this is pretty large - and I think a decent deal for the level of quality you're getting. Overall, this may not be the best bagel I've had, but it remains one of the best bagel sandwich experiences. 9.25/10
