I have tried to come here a couple times but it has been closed. I was happy this time it was open. There was a crowd of people outside. I thought there might be a line but there was not. I walked in and it's like a tiny mini mart with japanese items. in the display case there are different kinds of red bean mochi which the cashier was happy to describe to me. My favorite flavor of the mochi so far is the peanut butter flavor. The texture of the mochi was so perfect. The first bite of mochi I already tasted the smooth peanut butter inside. My friend and I decided to try this place after some recommendation from friends! There's a small store part and on the outside is a booth where you can order snow cones - I would recommend both if you make the trip here! Inside the store you can get fresh Mochi! The earlier in the day you come from their opening time, the more options you have since they do tend to sell out toward the end of the day. But that didn't stop us from trying the Mochi they had! They were soft and the filling wasn't too sweet and made for such a good snack. There is a charge if you don't pay with cash. Went here for the first time and the cashier was super friendly and helpful. She recommended a few treats to me, including the chocolate lovers mochi and a bready coffee ball with the white bean filling, and even though I didn't come in to get them, I liked them better than the thing I came in to get. Like the stereotypical asian compliment: not too sweet!! She also said if you want to try the onigiri, you should come early Thursday-Sunday because they're only made then and first come, first serve. I wanted to come by for their shaved ice (they even have a window for it!), but it looks like they only really offer it during summer/mid-autumn. Will try and come back during the times that they offer shaved ice! Despite that, I did want to go in to buy some of their hand made mochi, and was successful in getting a few! Red bean, white bean, and matcha this time around; they had at least 4 times more in their inventory that I was tempted to get, but the hubby and I wouldn't have been able to finish it prior to returning back to so.Cal. Ha, I found out after I got home that out of the three I picked out, one was a mochi, while the other two were more bun/bao-like. The buns/baos were still amazing, though! But the mochi was, oh man, *chef's kiss*. It was very obviously fresh, very QQ or bouncy, and just had that perfect stretch to it upon bite. I really wish I looked a little closer and picked out all of the mochis. Goal for next time! Street parking is available, without too much issue (though we were visiting on a Wednesday noon). I've come here a handful of times and had their mochi, shaved ice, and onigiris. Out of everything, the mochi is my favorite item here! They make it fresh every day and the fillings are delicious! Ok first of all this place has the best snow cones I have ever tasted! I've been coming here for many yrs now. So I said to myself, lemme try the large this time how much bigger could it be from a medium, which is usually what I get. BIG MISTAKE!!! NEVER GET A LARGE unless you plan on sharing with 3 people or more... this thing was HUGE!!!! I was so embarrassed...I had NO IDEA after all these years. After a day in Sacramento, we popped in here and wow, what a gem this place is! Mochi is such a treat, and hard to find where we live so when we venture out of our area, we always try to sleuth out any potential mochi stores, and that is how we found Osaka-ya. On the day we visited, the area had a Japan town-esque party thing, with mochi samples, music, merch and a lot more out on the sidewalks. I loved the friendly, community atmosphere, and lots of folks showed up to support the local businesses. Once inside, we were excited to see they still had a significant selection of the mochis they make, so we got about two of each they still had. I could barely contain myself to not open the box on the sidewalk! Once in the car, we dove into the box and sampled a few of the mochis and they were amazing. Wow. There was not a single mochi we tried that we didn't like. In terms of the specific flavors, I've gotta say their Matcha green tea mochi was the boldest green tea flavor I've had so far. It was strong, unapologetic, and memorable. Also surprising, this was the first time I had eaten a Kurumi walnut mochi and it was super delicious and light- quite a treat. I think the one that was the most authentic for me in terms of transporting me to Japan was the Sakura mochi-it was so delicious; I can just taste it now. Fantastic. Overall, super nice folks, delicious mochi with great selection, and a real eye for flavors. They also offer different types of maki sushi, and will take lunch orders. We brought gifts to family in Santa Cruz and picked up more for our Denver family members on our way back. Osaka-Ya is a hidden gem in Sacramento! It's family-run and very authentic. My family came out to Osaka-Ya this morning at 9am for some fresh Mochi. They had over fifteen types of mochi and manju including ones filled with white bean, red bean, peanut butter, and chocolate. They also sell fresh dorayaki (Japanese pancakes with red bean in the middle), shave ice, ice cream, cold and hot bentos, and Japanese and Hawaiian snacks. We ordered a pack of 12 of assorted Mochi and manju for about $20 (each piece of mochi is $1.50) . Each mochi is individually wrapped and beautifully presented. My favorite was the matcha red bean mochi, but my family really liked the unique mugwort red bean mochi. Service was wonderful and the girl at the register was very friendly. I can on a Saturday morning, at about 9:30AM. It wasn't very busy which was nice. The store is quite small but had a wide variety of Japanese food and products on sale. They have some hot foods, some frozen foods (& frozen Mochi!), some bags of rice, and assorted snacks/grocery items. Their main display had their beautiful Mochi squares that come in a variety of flavors and filling. I opted for the small box of fruit flavored Mochi and it was $5.35 which is about the same if I just bought the larger Mochi squares of those flavors. They're great! Sunday, 6/25/2023 - I finally got to come check out Osaka-Ya. Address is 2215 10th St, Sacramento, CA 95818 (Downtown). Family owned and everything is made by hands. It's been opened since 1911. Wow!! Also, it's only one of two Japanese confectionaries left in Northern California and we have one here!!! Very small inside with lots of goodies. I tried their red bean mochi and it was perfectly sweeten. Not too sweet. Not too plain. Just perfect. I've had red bean mochi before and it was always way too sweet for me. I really liked it. Then we went to the outside window to order a small cherry snowcone for $5.00. There was a line. But wasn't too bad of a line. They give you a ticket with your number after you pay for it. When your order is up, they'll call your number. Boy was that snowcone huge!!! It's worth it! Lol. My little one loved it. You get one flavor, but can add additional things to it for an extra charge. There's probably only two places left in Northern California where you can get fresh made mochi. After Benkyodo closed in San Francisco Japantown, the only shops left are in San Jose Little Tokyo area, and Osaka-ya in Sacramento. My wife has made mochi at home, so I know how difficulty it is to get the right moisture content so the mochi is not too mushy or too doughy. Therefore I appreciated the expertly made mochis at Osaka-ya. Generations of experience and knowledge have resulted in consistent product. The mochis are plump and soft, the red bean fillings are not too sweet. Each bite just felt delectable. I love mochis with a warm drink (capuccino or matcha tea), and I am just glad that institution like Osaka-ya is still around to carry on the tradition. There's no seating space inside the shop, so all mochis are packed to go. Hence the 4-stars. It would be nice if we can enjoy the mochis at the shop, with some good matcha tea. The service was good, it's a walk up window so it's not like much is needed. The ambiance is, different. It's an Asian convenience store that is sparsely stocked. They advertise musubis but only make them on specific days and that's not advertised which was disappointing upon arrival. For me, I came here for the mochi.... I was fortunate to come across an article promoting Osaka-Ya for their handmade mochis! The place had been wiped out of their home made mochi! There was their assortment (red, orange, and blue) of flavors and only 2 of their traditional style mochis (both red bean) remaining. I decided to grab 2 shrimp tempura hand rolls, the assortment mochi, and 4 of the red bean mochis. Came out to be a little over $20. If you pay with a credit card, there is a fee. Everything was delicious! What a difference the texture of the mochi had compared to ones you find at a grocery store like Ranch 99. The shrimp tempura was still crisp. Osaka-Ya is a small Japanese bakery shop that specializes in mochi. They have a few other items other than mochi, but the store is kind of small, so they don't have a lot of product. We came specifically for mochi to bring to our adopted grandparents. I other than mochi, we ended up getting 15 pieces of mochi, 5 slices of mochi cake and 2 packages of 8 piece futomaki sushi (grand total of $59.38). Some days there is a line out the door, but there weren't a lot of people shopping here this Saturday around 11am so we did not have to wait long to check out. The best fresh mochi in Sac! I love stopping by this shop or buying their mochi from local Asian markets. And mochi made from sweet rice is gluten free :) The shop is a bit into the 10th St. exit and almost at the corner--just a walk away from Southside Park. Kinako white mochi with smooth red bean filling and soy bean powder is a good basic and my usual. It's natural and well balanced. I was also told by staff that the white mochi with red bean types are the most popular. Just a few of these are displayed on the first level of the clear counter, and a main stock is kept behind. Sakura pinkish colored mochi with diced cherry leaves and smooth red or white bean filling is my second favorite with a delightful light fruit flavor. Shiso purplish mochi with smooth red bean and pickled plum is pleasant with a fruity undertone where the more earthy plum is highlighted. Hikicha green tea infused mochi has a good flavor. With whole red beans, this has a chunkier texture. I've also tried a manju, some mochi or filling with a pancake or other cake wrap. I didn't care much for the pancake I had but might try a different cake and type sometime. A few other savory snacks and packaged groceries are also available in the shop, as well as some fresh sushi. I just walk in for the mochi really, which is more than enough for me :) read more

People always rave about their mochi here, so I wrongfully assumed that's all they offered. I ordered six of them, and since there was a line forming behind me on a busy Saturday afternoon, I chose quickly, just basing on the prettiest ones and those that fit my flavor profile. I absolutely loved the strawberry mochi! The texture and sweetness were perfect. I excitedly grabbed for the green tea flavored one, and was confused when the texture was cakey. And that's when I realized I was ignorant and bought manju, which is made from wheat flour. That was completely my bad. I wish I had paid more attention. I threw in a dorayaki too. I ended up buying 4 manjus and didn't enjoy them because they were all incredibly dry, including the doriyaki. The coffee manju was particularly bad, like it was overcooked with no hint of coffee flavor. The filling was pretty good though! I'll definitely go back, but I'll make sure to pass on the manju and dorayaki. Also better to pay in cash since they charge 4% if you're using a card. read more
