We were the first customers in the dining room this morning, and were seated inside (it was really cold, so riverside wasn't an option for us) looking out at the river walk and La Mansion hotel. Our waitress was attentive, the hot tea and coffee were spot on, and the migas were quite literally the best we've ever tasted. They're served on a half boat of poblano pepper, which I ate with my eggs (but my husband did not, as he's not as much into the spicy flavors as I am). We came to Ostra for breakfast since we were staying in the Mokara Hotel upstairs. The hotel issued us vouchers for our meals which already put us at a great start (because free is always delicious). After being greeted warmly by the staff, we hungrily perused the menu and a short while later, John, our server, arrived to inform us that we also had the option of going to the breakfast buffet for $22. He informed us that it would have many of the items that we were eyeing, along with a fresh and made-to-order omelette station. Since I'm of the mindset that more is better, I opted for the buffet instead of a menu item and promptly marched to the buffet line to pile my plate high. Along with cereal, fresh fruit, and baked pastries, there was a line of hot plates, each containing hot piles of breakfast potatoes, blueberry-sage sausage patties, and slightly spicy scrambled eggs with tortillas. The aforementioned omelette station was also open and ready for business, quickly assembling our omelettes with our choice of fix-ins. Since it was still early on a Sunday morning, we scored a table by the river, which made for some lovely people watching while we enjoyed our food. John checked on us intermittently to make sure our glasses were filled and that used plates were promptly whisked away. While we didn't have to pay for our meals, I found the price versus quality to be quite fair, especially since we partook in the buffet and ate to our fill. A nosy glance around at neighboring tables revealed generous serving sizes for those who chose to order straight from the menu instead. I typically avoid restaurants in hotels, especially for breakfast, as they tend to have really bad buffets. Many times hotel restaurants are only there as a stopgap measure, the quality of food and service is typically poor. I also tend to avoid restaurants that are on the Riverwalk in San Antonio. Many of them are kitschy, bland, and cater to tourists who are looking for cheap drinks, cheeseburgers, and chicken tenders. Ostra Is the complete opposite of the above. My wife and I went there for breakfast based on reviews on yelp and we were not disappointed. A fantastic breakfast menu that had all the classics you want... Plus some really fun takes on local flavor. The service was outstanding, the hang on the Riverwalk was chill. No bad music blasting, or circus like atmosphere so many river walk restaurants have... All in all an absolutely fantastic experience. Next time we are San Antonio we will be going back to check it out for lunch and or dinner... read more

This was our first visit to Ostra and we came to celebrate our anniversary. We sat inside on a Wednesday evening. The weather was nice outside so most people were seated outside along the river. This made for excellent service for us inside. Our waiter, I wish I could remember his name, was excellent; he was attentive, friendly, knowledgeable but did not hover over us. From the cheese/meat tray appetizer to our meals (steak and king crab) to the chocolate mousse cake, everything was top notch. We have been eating here for years as it is one of our favs. Dinner last evening was disappointing. First there was a panhandler going to each out door table asking for money. In times past the manager would step forward before this happened and move the panhandler along and away from guests, not last night. I ordered a pasta dish I like which the menu states has lobster, scallops, shrimp and clams. The only thing prepared correctly was the past. The sauce was out of can, no flavor or spices, and barely warmed up. The shrimp and scallops were the smallest I have ever seen and were likely previously frozen. No other seafood, fresh or frozen, could be found on the plate. Sadly we won't return. Unfortunately, when our entrees arrived (ahi tuna and red fish), they were both over-cooked/dry (like they had sat under a heat lamp for too long). The flavor profiles were outstanding, and the chef should be applauded, but it all falls down to getting it to the table on time. Sadly, that was not what happened. I really loved this place. I don't know, was it the bells ringing? No, I really think it was that fantastic lobster roll. I've had my share of lobster rolls so I know when I'm eating something really good. I had a half a lobster roll, which still seemed pretty big to me. They served it on Texas toast. Although the quality of the food was good, the selection was relatively sparse, the portions small, but the prices large. For example, the seafood tower was impressive but so was the $200 price tag for this alone. With drinks around $10-15 a pop and enters hovering around $40 each, you can see how things can really add up. We had a Caesar salad straight from a plastic bag, oysters that were the consistency of shriveled slugs and calamari That had shed all of its greasy breading to reveal what looked like microwaved rubber bands. Came to Ostra due to Las Canarias being closed for repairs. We both love seafood, and the menu looked appealing online, so we opted to try it out. Firstly, the staff was very warm and welcoming, and sat us promptly at a small table near the shuttered window doors near the Riverwalk. It was a great view, and after opening the doors for us a bit, it was quite nice to feel the gentle breeze and enjoy the music being played outside. We started off with a couple of appetizers. A wedge salad for her, and I chose the Charcuterie of meats. Both were quite good, but the Cahrcuterie only had a small number of bread pieces (4), making the remains necessitate eating by fork only. We had already decided that our main meal would be to share the "Gulf Coast Seafood Plateau." The array of options looked great on the menu, so we were both expecting a beautiful feast. The Plateau was delivered, and immediately I was somewhat unimpressed. All the oysters were incredibly small and tasteless. The ceviche was a real hit though, and had an impressive flavor. Four shrimp tails adored the platter, and were fairly well done. However, the clams were all bad -- and I mean FOUL! Fortunately, I was the only one who ate the first one, and then promptly sent them back to be returned with 2 paltry sized oysters again. A big disappointment. The service was quite nice, and they certainly tried to do their best. However, I believe this place is likely overrated due to location and tourism. I can't say anything about what we did not try that evening, but the taste of a bad clam is certainly a deal-breaker for me. The smell alone should have been a dead giveaway to anyone preparing them. All four were "off," and I'm just grateful I did not get sick. Sorry, but I don't think I will be returning. read more

~This review is for dessert only~ After dining at Bella and perusing the Riverwalk for a bit, we decided to stop off at Ostra for a drink and dessert. It was about 11:00 PM and there were several open tables outside on the river. Our server did not give us that pathetic look of "they only want dessert so this is going to be a light bill". Thank you, young man, much appreciated! We were staying at the hotel so I think he might have recognized us. We split the pecan chocolate chunk brownie (with vanilla ice cream) and the bread pudding. Both were very large portions. We could have easily ordered one dessert for both of us, but honestly, what fun would that be? The bread pudding was nice and warm but it was missing something. Even when we poured the entire glass of whiskey sauce on it, it was still bland. The frosting on the brownie was rich and decadent. All of that chocolate was making me sick, but what the F, we were on vacation. You're supposed to overdo it. I went against my grain and ordered a fruity cocktail. Big mistake. It was way too sweet for my liking. It was some kind of pineapple/Midori/sour mix type of martini. I dislike fruity drinks and I don't know what I was thinking. But then again, a dirty martini would not blend well with the two tons of sugar I had just consumed. Good place to people-watch. If you go, be sure to sit outside. read more

We start walking and talking about all the places we've been and how we ought to give another hotel restaurant a chance, when he remembers Ostra by La Mansion. We stroll over and are delighted to get a table outside on the river walk. The service was impeccable. There are two waiters (we learn) an assistant to a waiter? Wow, FANCY! They even put your napkin in your lap kinda fancy. Brown sugar cubes on your table kinda fancy. The food was amazing. Everything was beyond top notch and well worth the time, price and geez, just about everything. I always thought Ostra was a seafood type restaurant but now I know this is where I will be coming for breakfast when I'm feeling fancy and not in the mood for tacos. read more

Nice seafood place on the riverwalk in San Antonio. We were a group of 11 with small kids. The place is a little pricy, but they do have a kids menu. This as a Sunday evening and they were a little quiet. Had calamari and their Ostra seafood plater for 2 which they nicely split for our table. The seafood plater could easily be a meal for 2. It had a nice mix of cold items include oysters (2 varieties), clams, associated sauces for the shellfish. Ordered the evening special which was a barramundi on a pork belly risotto. I'm pretty sure I'd reviewed the Ostra a while back. I keep going back here since it's a very consistently high quality establishment. As part of a very important business dinner, there were 4 people including myself and 3 of them had never eaten here before. The food was very good as usual. Most of us started with the Gumbo. I had the paella which was flavorful and loaded with seafood. Others in the group had the salmon as well as the redfish. Everyone thought the food was exceptional. Our service was not as good as in the past. I recall it being more 5 star than 4 star. An considering we came on a Saturday, it was somewhat quiet. I had just come from a Yelp Elite Event at the Backstage Pass in San Antonio. I still had my Elite name tag on and I got a special table from the manager of the restaurant. It was very fun. I am always weary of hotel restaurants being high priced and not so great food. This trip the food... *We started with the Canadian Oysters, there were small and salty but my partner likes them that way. The house made sauces on the other hand were awesome. I din't remember the names but one is green and one is red. The green had cilantro in it and was very fresh, and the red one was very tasty as well. I used them all up on the bread at the table. *I had the Salmon with a sweet potato hash, YYYUUUUUMMMMM The fish was cooked perfectly and is served with a very crispy skin. I was I could have had a bowl of the hash! It was worth every bit of the $34. *My partner had the Scallops with a rice noddle salad. It was ssssooooo good. The scallops were done perfectly, the melted in your mouth with the crispy pan seared outside and tender center. *I have had the Ahi Tuna salad before on a Sunday Fun Day, and it was very fresh and prepared perfectly. The service......... So I thought it was going to be amazing, seeing as I forgot to take my name tag off. he he. The manager was very nice but our server on the other hand was not so helpful. He ran up to the table and asked what we wanted to drink, and got them for us. When he returned he asked "What do you want?" He was sweating and stood way away from the table and made it seem as though there we 300 people in the restaurant, but there was only 4 tables with people. After we asked what was the special he told us it was sold out. He was very quick, did not give any suggestions, and seemed annoyed with us ordering oysters before the meal. I felt rushed and like I had inconvenienced him in some way by coming to his table. Other than that, it is a great place. Go at night and sit by the river, they have misters that blow all night so you will feel great. No one wants to eat oily fried fish and soggy frozen fries at a restaurant with blue challises for water and proper cloth napkins. There were nine of us and not one of us liked our entrees. The food was very bland and legitimately tasted like nothing. We came on Easter Sunday and their specialty appetizers were ok, probably because it was the only fresh thing that came out of the kitchen.
