The reason I'm giving 5 stars is because of Manager Alan and Server David. Excellent service after a Hostess/Table Reserver messed up our Reservation twice. Alan jumped in and offered us 2 free glasses of wine and dessert. David our server was outstanding. He made every suggestion and we were not let down. I suggest sitting outdoors especially during December (unless it's below 50) Heaters need to be prepared with propane where the Hotel Engineer dropped the ball. Overall disappointing. Very nice wait staff but it appears like they were overwhelmed and I only got to see him a couple times, refills for drinks took forever. My order was a Caesar salad that was supposed to come with anchovies but didn't and a dozen oysters which arrived with only 11 oysters. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this restaurant on the riverwalk. The hostess recommended the calamari, which was not good. The breading crumbled in my hand as soon as I would pick one up and the taste was not just off. I also had a Caesar salad with salmon. This was the worst Ceasar salad I've ever had and it is hard to mess up such a simple, classic entree. Dressing was nonexistent. In fact, the waiter looked at my plate when he set it down and immediately offered to bring me more dressing, as he noticed that the salad looked dry. My second-to-last meal in San Antonio was breakfast at Ostra, one of the restaurants located inside the Mokara hotel. I was a hotel guest as I had a reservation that Sunday and one of my options when booking the hotel was included breakfast, a $20 value. VENUE: As I was eating here for breakfast on a Monday morning I got much more than just breakfast. I got to enjoy a good hour of the Riverwalk to myself - only a few boats passed by as I ate and as it was morning there weren't very many tourists. I can see how the outside area near the River Walk can get very crowded as outdoor tables are right near one of the departure points of the boat tour. Note that the actual river is so shallow that it's impossible to drown. SERVICE: It was rather slow. I made the mistake of needing another minute to decide on my breakfast only for the waiter to take more than 10 minutes, instead servicing nearby tables pouring water or taking orders. Once my order was placed it didn't take very long for my food to be brought out. Though the breakfast voucher is good for the "Mokara Signature Breakfast", in actuality the voucher is good for any breakfast item on the menu. Getting value for my voucher I was good with just getting the Mokara Breakfast with tortillas and blueberry-sage sausage with Peet's coffee. I've had applewood smoked bacon in a few breakfast dishes but this was only the second time I encountered blueberry-sage sausage, and the only other time was a day earlier. When you look at the platter it looks quite small for $19 but it was enough to fill me up. - I can taste some of the sage in the sausage but none of the blueberry. Using some of the egg and sausage I used one of the tortillas to make it into a breakfast taco. - Sausage pieces were rather small. It was fine with me as I don't normally eat big portions but I can see how this can disappoint a hungry person. - Included jam and butter was good, especially when mixed together. My breakfast overall was good, if a bit overpriced. This is somewhat understandable as the Mokara is situated right in the River Walk and what you're paying for is the view. I was lucky to enjoy my breakfast as part of the voucher but on my next visit I'll either go for a different option here or find a more authentic breakfast experience such as breakfast tacos. read more

We ended up here as part of a hotel/spa/dining package. The staff was extremely attentive and helpful, and the restaurant very comfortable. Four Diamond though? Hmmm. I was pretty hungry, so I put in an appetizer order for the fried calamari with our drink order. I was stunned when the calamari appeared less than 2 minutes after I ordered it. Even the waiter was surprised to see we had received it. "They must have had one ready," he remarked. That must have been true... there is no way that dish could have been prepared in the time between my order and its arrival. So I was not at all surprised to find that it wasn't terribly hot. It wasn't cold, but it was plainly apparent it had been sitting for a bit before being served to us. For my main I got the blacked redfish, on a bed of spinach and corn polenta. It was amazingly delicious. Could not have been better. Chris got the seared ahi, which both of us thought was cooked more than usual for Ahi. Also be aware that some of the entrees come with literally nothing else but the meat. Chris felt it was sparse even for a la carte. Food is subpar and they're up charging for no good reason. Made dinner reservations at Ostra primarily for ambiance and proximity to our hotel. The food looked good online, albeit overpriced. We thought, makes sense for the great location. We were very pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious, not the best we ever had, but no complaints on anything. Although a little pricey, the portions were big for every dish we ordered! We felt like we got our moneys worth. Our server was pretty low key and quiet (not a bad thing for us). When we asked for recommendations, he gave great ones. Get the El Tepache cocktail if you like mezcal!! Refreshing, delicious, and not too sweet. We would definitely return. In San Antonio for a girls weekend. Came to Ostra for a nice dinner. Service was great, seafood tower was amazing. Bartenders Mia and Cheyenne were my favorite part of the evening. We made sure to let their manager, Andy, know but he was a bit too distracted to appreciate the shout out. It's really disappointing when a restaurant accepts a reservation and then the staff continuously makes comments about closing soon and rush you. Food was okay, but nothing exceptional that made up for the cost ($50+/person) or the treatment. Best part of the meal was the bread basket. The food was pretty mediocre overall but the ambiance and service were nice. The real problem was the price. It just cost too much for the quality of the ingredients for the dishes that we got. The tomatoes, for instance, weren't fully ripe and instead had that mealy quality to them that you find in a lot of grocery store tomatoes. We came to this place for a special mommy/daddy night out. My husband knows how much I enjoy oysters and did his research and settled on this location. Our entire meal was top notch. The riverwalk is full of tourist trap spots but this is not one of them. I ended up eating multiple meals here while in town for business and can vouch for them being an excellent choice for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I just had a terrible experience at this restaurant. I ordered the grilled ahi tuna and it was by far one of the worst dishes I've ever eaten. I do not understand what the chef was trying to do. It consisted of a part cooked, part raw tuna steak that was covered in a weird breading like what would be on a chicken parmigiana but mixed with some spices. Then added was a soy based sauce that did not match the tuna steak. I had my parents and wife try it as well to confirm it was bad and they all scrunched up their faces at what they had just ate. My mother and wife shared a seafood pasta that they said was average and differently not worth $32. My dad had a bison burger that was also average. The only thing that was good there was the Coca Cola. To top off the disappointing food, we also had an argument over incorrect billing that took nearly a half hour to fix. Considering only the price and the food, I would advise you to avoid this place. There are many more restaurants along the river walk who are much better than Ostra. read more

As we walked through the city this best matched our mood. We started off with sausage gumbo, truffled fires and shrimp cocktail. They were all very good. The shrimp had a nice Smokey flavor, very nice. The Fries were seasoned nicely and you could taste the black truffles. Since we ordered so many appetizers we decided to share the seafood pappardelle. Went with 3 friends for lunch on a Sunday. We were sat inside in the restaurant all the way in the corner. An empty dining room at lunch time on a Sunday should have been a huge red flag before we decided to get a table, but we rolled the dice anyway. It took the server at least 5 minutes to take our drink orders and appetizer order. It took another 10 minutes for them to actually bring our waters and a bottle of wine out. I even had to look around the restaurant and hunt down a server to remind them that they haven't brought us our drinks yet. The starting dishes arrived at our table about 5 minutes after the drinks. I ordered gumbo and the table ordered the fried calamari to start. It tasted fine. Nothing spectacular. We waited at least another 25 minutes and our entrees still had not came out. In this time no one came to check on us. I'm pretty sure they forgot about us, which is odd because there was literally no one else sitting inside the dining room. We were even ignored by someone who I assume was the manager. At this point we decided to get up, pay for whatever food we had received, and leave. The manager was standing at the main register as our party of 4 approached and as we walked up to the register he walked away without even acknowledging us, leaving our server to complete the transaction. Not once during our 45 minutes were we checked on or offered an apology. I've never received such terrible service at any restaurant in my life and the sub-par food was not worth anywhere near the price. Avoid this place like the plague. read more

Came is as a party of 8 with reservations... yes we had four kids, but had prepared our kids with how to behave in the restaurant and love fine dining and interesting food. A couple things... Food 4/5- I had the tuna and it was delicious! My husband's redfish was under seasoned, but our friends had the filet, lobster and curry. Service 2/5- this was this issue for me. I've worked in the service industry, so I partially get the idea that we have kids and sometimes families don't tip as well as other tables, but it really seemed like we were given less attention and were somewhat rushed in ordering because of our table and the fact he could put a service charge on our table by giving minimum service. Other tables were given bread, while we were not. We were only really visited by the server when taking our order and for the minimum tasks. Checking -1/5 This is where my other issue is. The "service charge" was added to our ticket and that's fine, however when I asked the server about it he said it was put on parties of 6 or more to help pay the food runners and himself, but when we got the check it didn't say "additional gratuity" it just said "tip". I hate when restaurants do this because it's deceptive. It feels like they are trying to get additional tips in a sneaky way when they already charged us the service charge. Honestly, he would have made more money if he'd left it off or at least was open about it, because it just made our table feel "less than" the other tables simply because we had our kids with us on vacation. I mean, collectively our table spent $400 and the server made $60-75 (depending on how they split tips) with a fine dining menu without the "fine dining" service you expect. Our family of five just spend a wonderful weekend in San Antonio. Every part of our trip was amazing EXCEPT for the two experiences we had with your host/ front of house staff. Late Saturday afternoon we inquired about having lunch for a party of five. The host did not give us a wait time but instead rudely asked us tons of questions. After answering all of his questions - he still did not give us a wait time. He stood there with a smug look on his face. It's as if he did not want our business. I had to ask him three times if we could get a table and or be placed on a wait list. He finally told us 15 minutes and eventually sat us. However the tables were not put together properly, the chairs were not near the table, the umbrella was in the way of one of our seats and the chair cushions were filthy with crumbs and food. The host was very rude again in his response when I asked him to please move the umbrella so we could sit down. We decided to put this rude experience behind us and instead enjoy our lunch. Good food and a nice waiter. During our time there, I watched many other patrons walk away in disgust and overheard them complaining about how rude the host was to their family. The next day we stopped in for breakfast as we liked the food and location. We hoped the bad attitude of the host was a "one-off" experience. We inquired about a party of five for breakfast. The same host once again rudely asked us about what hotel we were staying at and then told us they are saving all the tables for their hotel guests. I inquired about putting in our name or a wait time and he told us that he could not seat us at all. Okay, fine. However, he was extremely rude and spoke down to us! Even my 9 year old nephew commented and said "why is that man so mean and act like that?" Needless to say we left disappointed by this second negative conversation, which was complexly avoidable. Like I said, we were fine to wait, or be told there are no open tables or asked where we are staying, etc. however it can all be done in a respectful and kind manner! Seems like this host (past reviews show this is a common occurrence!) needs to be re-trained in customer service or find a different role. "Greeting" patrons this way is not a way to attract customers! EDIT- I spoke with the manager after these incidents and he stated the response from the host was due to the fact that one of their sister hotels recently closed their restaurant so they need to cater to those patrons who "paid premium to stay at their hotels". Obviously, the manager missed the point! Our only concern was about sharing information in a respectful manner. Treating people with respect and kindness is customer service rule #1. Do this and they will be your best customer. And in this case, the opposite is true. The good news is after leaving here we received a wonderful recommendation for Schilo's Deli. Highly recommend this place- they were super friendly and the food was delicious! read more

I'm still seething! Hubby and I go down to have a nice day at the Riverwalk. We decided to stay for lunch. Most places had a 30-45 minute wait. We had seen Ostra before and the lovely lady seating us was very appreciative that we were not pushing for an outside table. All started well. I'm not even grumpy about having to wait over 15 minutes for the waiter to take our drink order. I ordered a "glass of house merlot" him "6 or 9 oz?" me "9". Hubby ordered a beer. He had the turkey club. Not much to complain...it was a sandwich. I ordered the fish and chips. It was probably (not the worst) not the best thing I could have ordered. Deep fried flounder is mushy. The coleslaw was simply shaved cabbage and mayo. Oh well. I even asked to see the dinner menu in case we'd return some day. The waiter brings our check. Husband "WOW". So I know the cost of our meals...Me "my wine?" Husband "yep...wow" Me "what $15?" Him "nope" Me "$20?" Him nope. $30.00 FOR A GLASS OF WINE. I spoke with the manager who was a young girl. Although polite I doubt she got my point. I find it criminal to charge $30 for a glass of wine at lunch without telling someone the price or at least have the prices on the menu. Wait staff was off a bit but it looked like they were a short staffed like a lot of restaurants right now. My redfish was great and everyone else in our group of 10 seemed happy.
