I bought the Cocido (Mexican Beef Vegetable Soup), and instead of accepting the rice and tortillas that came with the Cocido, I requested a side of beans. I paid under $10. The Cocido was delicious. I received a fair portion of beef and vegetables. The beef used in the Cocido was the stew beef. I state this because I've ordered a Cocido from another place in the past and forgot to ask what type of beef was used and received a T-Bone Steak in my Cocido. Still tasted good, but it wasn't what I was expecting. The Cocido included squash, corn, cabbage, and carrots. The beans were delicious. However, if you're looking to stay on the healthier side, it may be a wiser choice to choose the rice and/ or tortillas because a large portion of reused lard was mixed into the beans for flavor. I've come here several times before and can't remember what I've ordered. However, I can tell you that I have never been disappointed with my order, customer service, or the cleanliness of the location. I wish they could have outdoor seating! read more

We noticed two different times this restaurant opens (online it has it opening at 10:30am) but when we got there it was still closed at 11:05am. So we waited but once in side the female owner was answering phone calls and getting a to go order ready. They had 3 other waitresses and one cook. We waited and waited. It's 3 out of 5 stars. Menu has been simplified for the business to survive. I completely get it. Got the Hollenbeck burrito, excellent! Wife got the combo with a taquito, beef taco, and cheese enchilada. She would not recommend to anyone. Stick with the Hollenbeck burrito and you will be ok. I'm sad cuz I grew up on this place and always love it. I'll still go back but my wife and I will share the Hollenbeck burrito. Service can be spotty but the business is trying to survive. 3.5, preferably. We came in for lunch on Monday noon-ish. Bright colorful decor! Not much of a lunch rush--only one or two other tables occupied on entry and several more by the time we left. The hello and goodbye from the slide/kitchen area, which is directly ahead when you walk in the door, actually rivaled those sushi joints where one gets great fanfare. The food was pretty good, but not great. Sooz had to ask for the avocado that was supposed to come with the carne asada salad. The carne asada was overcooked and the seasoning wasn't the best tasting. But as she kept pointing out, the greens were remarkably green and the avocado slices did their thing once brought. On my plate, the shredded beef taco dorado was just what it needed to be--crunchy, flavorful. The chicken was a little bland--tasted better with a healthy dose of salt. The salsa is a good blend of flavor with some heat. The rice is not bland or mushy or anything bad, and the beans are rich and benefit from not being lard-shy. This is definitely my favorite local mexican restaurant. Service has always been friendly and food is delicious. I always order the enchilada suizas, which is a green tomatillo sauce. These are my favorite type of enchiladas. The chicken taquitos are great too and they also serve chilaquiles for breakfast. The sonora burrito is gigantic. You can easily share or can be lunch and dinner. The prices are reasonable and if you get the combo, you get a bowl of soup with your meal. The margaritas are fabulous here. Came here for lunch with the family today. This is my go-to authentic Mexican restaurant.... I use their food as the standard when I try other places to compare. Most of the items on the menu are good, so you can't really go wrong. But my favorites are the cheese enchilada with red sauce, menudo, and their soft tacos with carne asada. Today I had myself a bowl of menudo and also a chile relleno a la carte. We come so often that the waitresses usually know what we want to order without really asking. Their combos are a pretty good deal as they come with rice, beans, and the soup of the day. In the past, albondigas has often been the soup of the day, which tastes good too. On Sundays, they have the buffet, which is a good deal, and if you're lucky the menudo is the soup that comes with it. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because the service needs some improvement sometimes and the extra back room isn't the most desirable place to sit. Osuna's! This is a restaurant you can take home to meet your mom and dad. Great free chips and salsa (ask for them hot!), and it's cheap! High points of your dining experience here will certainly include the torta. The chicken torta is my favourite, but they are all delicious. The enchiladas suizas are excellent, and will fill up the heartiest of eaters. Wow, what a taste explosion! The chicken mole isn't my favorite... it's a bit bitter, but I'm not huge on mole to begin with. The buffet is just adequate and definitely not indicative of the normal quality of food you'll get here. Avoid the buffet, and come get a torta or enchilada plate at Osuna's! read more

Hooray for my first yelp review! I've been to the other Osuna's location on Valinda and Amar, a long, long time ago. I had only known about this location, but never experienced it first hand. I called in our orders, since my coworkers and I were on lunch and we weren't sure if we'd have enough time. When I called in, the lady was super nice, attentive, and accommodating. I told them what time we'd be there and hoped for the best... When we arrived, they helped us right away. Our food was out and on our table within minutes, piping hot and super inviting. One friend had the veggie burrito, another the lobster burrito, and I had lobster tacos. I can't comment much on their food since I didn't get to try it, but I can say that they ate EVERYTHING on their plate and were very satisfied. They said that we had found a new lunch spot and that made me happy. My lobster tacos were really good. Each one was a little over $4 and a good size. The taco was composed of big lobster chunks (had at least one in every bite), tomato, onions, cilantro, crema, and cabbage. Creamy and delicious. Let's just say the tacos were defenseless after I got my first taste. Yum. The food is good and authentic. I look forward to coming back and trying more of their menu. We arranged catering for my grad party which we had on Father's day- June 2013. We ordered via a phone call and later went in to talk to the caterer. She was very organized and wrote up a complete bill which we paid and each item was listed to be check marked for pick up. We have been going to this small little family business for over 20 years and they are still great. They have a good brunch so I figured my catering would be similar. We chose to have 2 main meat dishes. The Chili Verde was so good, very tender pork, great sauce and hardly a drop was left. The second was Chicken fajitas. It was very tasty with generous pieces of chicken. We probably should have had tortillas but passed on it and instead ordered lots of chips and salsa which was popular the entire party. We also added Pico de gallo and guacamole to compliment the dishes. There were trays of rice and beans of which the rice is terrific, very light with bits of carrot - very flavorful. Wow! I had been there over 10 years ago and it was delicious, however, I tried it again today and food was okay. Nothing spectacular but the service was HORRIBLE!!! The server forgot my margarita and as we were chatting with the people next to us they were also frustrated because she had forgotten tortillas and soda. I think that's just plain ridiculous! I had the cheviche de pescado and the combination plate (chile relleno, taco & enchilada) it was okay. My hubby kept asking for more chips and even had to get up to ask for more soda. Overall not great not good and I don't recommend it. How sad :( this place used to be good. Oh BTW, the guy next to us had ordered a plate but once it arrived there was practically no meat. Came here expecting good Mexican good, because, I mean, come on, it's not that hard to make good Mexican food, right? Came with a Groupon, so we got appetizer, entrees and desserts. The appetizer is the vegetarian nachos. Very plain, nothing special. Had the Hollenbeck, supposedly world famous. It was big alright, but it had several problems. It was very plain: it only had rice beans and meat inside, so not much flavor variety which is what burritos need since they are an entire meal wrapped in a tortilla. The meat, which should be the flavor highlight, had *no* flavor what-so-ever. It was also not that tender either. The green sauce on top also had no flavor, it was just spicy. Finally, when Mexican food fails to have flavor I add pico de gallo, but the salsa bar didn't have any! So I was stuck with a flavorless giant burrito. I also ordered the flan as part of the Groupon. The flan was small, hard and tasted too fatty. I guess it was Mexican style, with sweetened condense milk. I prefer the more eggy lighter kind. The caramel sauce was also too burnt. The words can't even describe how I feel about this place. A good friend of mine took me there once and said he and his family had been going there for years. Now, I've tasted his Mama's cooking. Why they would ever go out to eat is beyond me.. and then Magic. I've yet to eat a dish at Osuna's I did not thoroughly enjoy. But there is one dish that blew me away, and after eating it, I knew what I wanted my last meal to be. I've been eating mole my entire life. My mom cooked very seldom, but when she did, she was OK. But when she pulled out the crock pot and started shredding chicken, I knew my dinner, next day lunch and next night dinner would be magical. I've always loved mole, especially the next day. Only my Mom's was the best. Then, on Mother's Day, the first since my Mom passed, I went to Osuna's and, to honor the woman I loved since birth, I had some of their mole. I didn't think anyone's mole could beat my Mom's. But from the first bite, tears nearly rolled down my face as I said aloud, "I'm sorry, Momma, but these guys got you beat!" I bought some last night and saved some for today's lunch. We all know mole the next day is the best. I lent tastes to two mole virgins in the office and both were dumbfounded. There were no words. The expressions on their faces were the only ways they could properly convey the love they instantly had for this spicy concoction of chocolate, nuts and chile. i am not sure how exactly this restaurant has 4 stars. Went her for lunch and it was pretty empty to begin with . There were only 4 other patrons other than me, unless there's a hidden secret room, it was pretty dead. I got the enchilada and chile relleno. The server also brought me a steak picadilla(?) taco since there was a lunch buffet and i was a bit torn about what i should get. i ended up picking my staples, just to get a feel of the restaurant. go with what you know and that way you can gauge the food, right? anywhoo.. The enchilada seemed like it had alraedy been made, it was quite dry and not much flavor from the sauce. The cheese wasnt even melted all the way. The Chile relleno, is one of my favorites when i go to mexican restaurant, but there are a very few places that i think make it right. there are two ways i see it done, with an meringue-ish egg white batter that's fluffy and airy or the same batter that's not, it just like a flour batter. i got the later. the chile was also not that great, i'm not sure that the roasted it before, it was so stringy and hard. i didnt get the soft texture i'm used to. rice and beans... were just normal, kinda dry as well... the chips and salsa were fresh and delish but most people don't go to restaurant JUST for chips and salsa. based on the ratings and trend, i was thinking it was going to be decent but it wasnt even that.. sad.. my rating was purely based on the food, service was great, but it isnt going to make me come back. read more

It's nice to have a little place in the neighborhood to go for a nice mexican dinner. Like most mexican restaurants (not taco trucks or hole in the walls), it's not a down and dirty mexican place. The good news with that is that it is more authentic than Mariposa or Acapulco or El Torito. The food here is over priced, but it's not bad. I can't say it's worth the money you pay, but considering your options in the area it's not a bad choice. There are many menu options, which is nice to see. This is a tough one to call. I placed a take out order...the person answering the call was VERY friendly and a bit on the comical side. Sounded kind of like a caricature of a Mexican person. I ordered the highly rated Lobster Burro and a #12 combo (enchilada and taco). The Burro was HUGE! And the red sauce that covers it is down right excellent. It had large chunks of...and there is the problem. I'm not 100% sure that it was Lobster. It had a very Shrimpy taste and Texture. Don't get me wrong the over all flavor was good, but something just did not seem right with the texture. The review from my lunch companion was that #12 combo was good, the rice being the favorite part. But when asked how it compared to our local favorite (La Indiana, see my review) it fell just a bit short. But was very good none the less. The star was the guac and chips. The guacamole is fresh and full of onion, cilantro and tomato. I could eat it all day. I'd say that this place is well above average for Mexican food, and the happy hour sounds fantastic. But when pressed against the best (in my mind) they rate a 90% to that place. That is mostly due to price and over all enjoyment of the food. To get me to eat Mexican food in the first place is a challenge, but to get me to come repeatably in the same week is nearly impossible. Well Guess what?!?!? Osuna's food is so good, I came three times in a week! Osuna's in Walnut has a very diverse menu compared to your typical Mexican places. When I asked the waitress what is good, she replied everything is good and all is made from scratch. When most places say the food is made from scratch it is typically not true, although after having the food here I believe it. The Food: Enchiladas con langosta (lobster) This dish is extremely good, they do not hold out on the meat like your typical places. The green salsa is really good and compliments the lobster. The rice and beans are typical of any Mexican restaurant. Overall I do not think you can go wrong with this dish. Lengua in Chile Verde Sauce According the the waitress this is a new dish on the menu recently. The lengua meat is really soft and tender and the Chile Verde sauce just goes perfect with the dish. It is served with rice and beans, and a side soup. Chicken in Mole Sauce No Matter where you go and try chicken and Mole, it is a very hard dish to get the flavors to come out. Osuna's does a good job at making the chocolate come out in the dish. I believe the mole at Osuna's is Oaxaca style mole (I could be wrong). Overall is you are tired of Acapulco or El Torito and live in the area, this is a great alternative to the typical chains. All the combination plates come with the soup of the day (which changes everyday). Lastly, The horchata at Osuna's is also handmade and not watered done (good stuff). read more

5 stars for my current obsession of the moment... Shrimp Enchiladas (Enchiladas de Camaron) I could maybe eat this everyday all day. I've been craving it ever since I tried it. And right now I've had it twice and can't wait for my next taste. It's only $11.95 a lit' pricey but then the only time I've had Shrimp Enchiladas was at Javiers in Irvine/Newport so it's a deal since I'm paying for the ambiance and the name at Javiers and considering gas right heck yea it's CHEAP! But I love the green sauce it's drizzled in and it's perfectly seasoned and ohhh so delicious! I judged a Mexican restaurant by their house salsa and chips and their beans. If you can make the basics amazing I'm sure everything else is even better and it was here. I don't like beans but the beans here are soo good, I could eat it all up. The salsa is spicy but perfectly balanced the tomato and cliantro flavor it's awesome! I've also ordered the fish taco it's good but I was so enthralled with the shrimp that I didn't focus too much on it, but it was good. I've only ordered to go here so I can't speak on the service but I'm always greeted with a friendly hello when I walk in. I love that they pack chips and salsa in every order and sometimes pack 2 bags of each if you order a lit' more. They don't skimp and I appreciate that. I'm pretty obsessed and my mom tried, mind you she does not like Mexican food but she really enjoyed the shrimp enchiladas and wants me to take her. The staff was very friendly upon entrance and the service was prompt as well. First thing out, the chips and salsa. And let me tell you, if the chips and salsa are tasty, you are more inclined to have a positive attitude toward your main dish, even if it isn't actually good. In this case, the main dish was awesome. It came with a small but ever so delicate noodle soup. I had the lengua en salsa verde. Not only was the salsa verde good, but it had just the appropriate amount of spiciness to allow one to enjoy the tomatillo and the lengua.
