This place used to have decent Americanized Chinese food but sadly the quality and taste has really gone down lately. The Orange chicken I had today was disgusting, soggy with dry flavorless chicken, the chicken tasted weird and was a hard rubbery texture. Clone chicken?? Lab grown chicken? Even the steamed rice was gloppy and balled up together. The beef in the beef chop suy was a weird light color, had no taste and was chewy. I've been coming here for years now and keep coming back, mainly for bomb salt & pepper chicken wings! I even had a birthday dinner here in the past. I stopped coming during COVID because the restaurant was closed most of the time but I recently went back and was very satisfied. The workers are welcoming and the restaurant is nicely decorated. We came here on our usual couples month/every other month get together with Soo and Maggie. Located within a plaza. Easy to miss. We ordered and shared family style - Mongolian Beef, Salt and Pepper Wings, BBQ Pork Noodle, Fried Rice, Moosho Pork, and Game Hen. As we sat down to order and then waited for our food, we got served the crispy wontons. I remember when growing up, anytime we went to a Chinese restaurant that serves these, it got classified as a Americanized Chinese restaurant. The Chinese restaurants that I grew up going to in NY - if they were fancy, normally served peanuts - or nothing at all. But regardless, I still very much enjoy them. It's not often that I get to munch on this crispy treat with the sweet and sour sauce. Food Thoughts- Mongolian Beef: My favorite dish out of all that we ate. It had the most flavor soaked in and the meat was tender. Salt and Pepper Wings: They were okay. BBQ Pork Noodle: Didn't really like it - I thought there wasn't much flavor within. But there were strips of BBQ Pork in it. Fried Rice: Tasteless. There was a section which was entirely white. We suggested to whomever takes it back to put it together with Chinese sausage to make it taste better. Moosho Pork: This was Maggie's favorite. I didn't really like it as the taste just didn't settle with me... Game Hen: Tasted very similar to the Salt and Pepper Wings but just drier. The restaurant didn't try to kick us out after we finished our meal and ended up talking for about 30 minutes longer as we usually like to catch up. They kept refilling our waters. I noticed many patrons and families came in and out, so this seemed like a prime spot to grab a bite to eat in or for takeout. Overall, I thought it was a decent experience. Came here to sit and eat and to our surprise they are not open for sit down service only take out! I have to say, Otay Mandarin gives Royal Mandarin some definite competition when it comes to their salt n pepper chicken wings!! Otay Mandarins's wings are huge, perfectly crispy outside, and juicy inside. I also ordered their beef and broccoli which was delish as well! I did not like their Shrimp in Lobster sauce. The sauce had NO LOBSTER FLAVOR and for some reason they add egg to their sauce which was very odd and off putting for me. Lobster sauce tasted like nothing! Almost like a cornstarch slurry of some sort with NO FLAVOR. Fried rice is decent. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this restaurant yet! We have been going here since we discovered they had garlic pepper chicken wings and I got to say it is sooooo good! Our family loves the food here. We've been ordering takeout from this place for years, but have yet to actually dine in, Lol. We especially love the Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings. Theirs is the best that I know of in the area. My mom loves the veggie and seafood dishes. I appreciate their patience when my mom has questions while ordering on the phone. Just want to get that out front -- I felt bad thinking it was a little expensive, but then realized we just bought enough for three meals easy. They load up those take-out containers. Really fresh and tasty. Salt & Pepper chicken was hot, crispy, and awesome -- some of the best I've had. The Pepper Beef did not hold back -- really good flavor and not overloaded with sauce. Parking here can get really busy as the spaces are shared by other businesses in the area such as the I-Sushi, Pho Convoy Noodle House, Quality Wash just to name a few. We may have drawn the long straw this past weekend and got us all seated, for a party of 6, in no time at all. If the place is busy upon a visit, just know that the Otay Mandarin is worth the wait. The Otay Mandarin is another decent location that serves tasty and crunchy salt and pepper chicken in the Chula Vista area. You can expect to receive a large portion of meals without hurting the wallet. We ordered the usual favorite starting with the Wonton Soup and followed with Shrimp Fried Rice, Salt & Pepper Chicken, Mild Spicy Kung Pao Chicken and Honey Walnut Shrimp. While we didn't order the shrimp chowmein this time, I would highly recommend ordering this dish. The fried rice and honey walnut all came with jumbo shrimp. I personally come here for their golden crunchy salt and pepper chicken. So far, there are two other Chinese restaurants I know that prepare and serve the same caliber of what a salt and pepper chicken should look and taste. Prices online are outdated, and the pricing on their website is wrong. Such a waste of time, they need to update pricing so customers know up front rather than a bait and switch. A local Chinese joint offering big portions of good tasting food for a low price. Every meal starts with a complimentary batch of fried wonton strips with sweet and sour sauce. The go to dish (and the dish that's literally on every single table) is the salt and pepper wings. These chicken wings are covered with salt, pepper, green onions, and garlic. Together it makes a really delicious dish. I also ordered a bowl of fried rice. Although it's just rice with peas and carrots, there's something about it that makes it's really good. The only downside is that the fried rice is pretty dry. It feels like they make it in a big batch and just leave it on a heater until it's requested. These two items are enough to make two people full so just keep in mind that although everything may sound good, it might be more than you can eat. These two items together was less than $13. This place has been a go to spot for years but since I moved it has been a minute since I've been here (at least a year) - they are take out only during Covid but I bet half their business has always been take out. Go to order is house noodles and salt and pepper chicken. There are many pretenders but the chicken here is best in San Diego County and its not close - they are the perfect crispy and their little concoction of spices garlic etc sets it apart from any others. This is by far the worst Chinese food I've tried. We recently moved to the area and were hoping to find a new favorite spot, this will definitely not be it. Nothing had ANY flavor. The Won Ton Soup was over $15 and it tasted like flavorless vegetables, floating in sink water. The beef in the Beef with Broccoli was completely flavorless and mushy. The Orange Chicken was just, off. I can't really even put my finger on it, but it was gross. Lastly, the Vegetable Lo Mein tasted like it was cooked in a pan that they had recently burned something in. The only edible thing out of everything we got was the broccoli from the Beef with Broccoli. I don't know how that was able to grab the flavor, while the beef remained completely flavorless. So disappointing! Especially after paying $80 for Chinese Takeout. Skip this spot if you are used to eating good Chinese food. read more
