We decided to leave because clearly the ice machine and the soda fountain is broken. If you can't do soda, how can you do food? We decided to leave, and the laconic waiter decided he needed to insist we pay for warm, flat soda. So now I'm predicting that they close fairly soon. Ate here on a Saturday night (prom was going on to give you a sense of the amount of traffic). We were seated immediately, given menus and able to order very quickly. The menu is pretty simple, not a lot of choices. All of the options seemed delicious, so I went with a traditional pork ramen with fish cake. Food was delivered quickly. The ramen was LARGE - too large for me to eat all of it. I wish that they various sizes to choose from, I hate wasting food. The broth was delicious. The fish cake was NOT good and I would not get it again. However, it did not ruin my meal at all. I did need a fork (yes I am one of those people) and it took a while for us to track down a waiter to assist us. They weren't busy, so I am not sure where he was. He was found and fork was obtained. This review is a little overdue. We went there probably the first month of their opening. Otsuka is very conveniently located in Baybrook mall. They also have a bar area so If you just want shareables and some booze after a day of stressful spending at the mall, this is a great addition to the options that the lawn area of the mall already have. I would say the benchmark ramen restaurant in the area would be Jinya, and it's hard not to compare every other ramen place to them since they are actually a pretty solid ramen shop that's well known throughout the country. I got the tonkotsu ramen, and I will say Jinya tops this place when it comes to the flavor of the ramen. It wasn't bad, just not as creamy and flavorful. I also had the takoyaki which was good. The service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable. Possibly the best ramen I've ever eaten. Ordered the #18 & requested the broth to be Spicy (2 peppers). Price was $13.95 w/o tax. It came out piping hot. Portions are generous. Beef was fresh & pork was tender, melting in your mouth. Diced tomatoes were a really nice touch & something I've never seen done before in ramen. This place is much better than Jinya b/c of spacious seating, good lighting, fast service, and large portion size. They give you a huge amount of noodles & you'll be stuffed by the time you're halfway done. For the avg person I could even imagine taking leftovers home. New ramen place in the new expansion area of Baybrook Mall! My friends and I decided to have dinner here one weekday evening. Upon walking in, we noticed an almost empty restaurant, but it was raining outside and we were in the mood for something warm and comforting. We inquired on their drink menu, and found out they had just acquired their liquor license that day - so I took it that they didn't have too many options? I did see someone try to order sake, and their sake machine wasn't properly working. As for food, we chose the calamari to share. They were pretty flavorful and not overcooked. I chose the spicy specialty ramen with a medium amount of heat ($13.95). The spice level was just right for me and the broth was flavorful. I must say that I was surprised that they included diced tomatoes as I think that's not too common in typical ramen that I've had before. For dessert we tried the green tea mochi - it was yummy, had just the right amount of green tea flavor, and didn't taste too much like the frozen kind from the grocery store. As the old adage goes, good things happen we you least expect them. So there I was at Baybrook doing some last-minute Christmas shopping when it hit me that I haven't had a morsel to eat all day. Originally with Red Robin on the brain, I came upon what's likely the latest restaurant to open in the new outdoor part of the mall, Otsuka Ramen & Bar. I told myself, "Self, why have plain old burgers and fries when you can do Japanese? You love Japanese, boss!" Got to listen to my conscience, right? As it turns out, Otsuka is well-known around these parts since there's one in Pasadena thus making the Baybrook branch the second. I scanned the menu plastered on the door when the Chashu Pork Rice Bowl grabbed my attention, as did the gyoza. Simply put, I knew what were the first things I was going to eat here. Much respect to the staff for their warmth and friendliness as I walked in. My waiter, Alex, was ready to tend to me. Before I knew it, I was savoring the items I was craving. The gyoza was deliciously chewy; I could eat my weight of the stuff if I had the time. The Chashu Pork Rice Bowl? Allow me to drop some knowledge real quick. Chashu, if I'm not mistaken, is Japanese for braising. Basically, I ate braised pork. Excuse me, sweet, tender, diced braised pork. The sauce from the meat seeped into the rice and the vegetables, making for a culinary tour de force I'd love to experience again. I overheard one of the patrons discuss dessert with Alex. Sure enough, when he came back to see how I was, I told him I wanted dessert. Though not really on the menu, diners here should ask for the Japanese ice cream, Mochi. Three flavors -- strawberry, mango, and matcha -- await to be tasted. Out of these, I thoroughly enjoyed the matcha. Otsuka Baybrook occupies the same space that formerly housed The Melt. Service: terrible I came here with my bf, I ordered the Tonkotsu Black and he ordered the Otsuka Miso. However, when our server brought us our ramen, the two bowls looked exactly the same. My bf pointed out that our ramen should not look identical when we ordered different things and told the server that he had gotten the order wrong. The server adamantly insisted that he put in the order correctly and walked off. We still ate the food but we were taken back by the way the server quickly dismissed our concerns. We also put in 2 orders of sake bombs. They brought out a singular tiny shot glass of hot sake and a pint glass of beer for each order. First of all, that's way too much beer. A sake bomb should be equal parts beer and hot sake. So I tried to ask our server for an empty glass to pour the beer and sake into, and he replied by telling me he was sorry for the inconvenience and that he would give us each a round of beer on him and walked off. I was confused bc all I asked for was an empty glass. We didn't want more beer. We finished our food and drinks and asked for the check. And guess what? On the check, you could see that there were indeed 2 orders of the Tonkotsu Black. No Otsuka Miso that my bf ordered. We called over the server and pointed it out to him. He apologized and gave us a discount. Overall, I felt like the server did not care. He didn't listen to us and kept walking off before we could get a word in. Me and my girlfriend went here on what we thought would be a normal date. Coming into the restaurant, it was normal until we had gotten seated in a booth and was served drinks. Our waiter said our menu item (13) was discontinued, and the reason being for its discontinuation was that a child exploded and died. As someone who works in the Baybrook area, I've had plenty of opportunities to try this place out. Upon entering you get a beautiful view of a geisha or woman. The restaurant is split into 2 separate areas, a dining area & a cocktail side. It's not the largest space but it's not a small restaurant either. I've tried the takoyaki which is decent, the veggie gyoza (solid dumplings!), & the shrimp tempura has a chewy crunch to it. I recently had the kaarage, and was not my favorite. I prefer my breading to be lighter and crisper. It also reminded me of American Southern style. It's also served with what I believe to be is an eel sauce and maybe a honey mustard. Now, my info on the ramen itself is pretty limited. I always get the Ebi Tempura ramen with chicken broth & eggs. Good. Mild flavor but still tasty. I want to start out by stating if your unfamiliar with ramen ask to speak with the cook if your waiter is unfamiliar. All ramen based on the region it comes from will tastes different. You have four types..Shio, Shōyu, Miso and Karē. I have read the reviews for this restaurant and those that state the ramen lacks flavor I would have to ask what type did you get? Lol It's like ordering a steak or eating dark or white chicken...LOL You have to know what you like. As Texans we like more complex and flavorful dishes. This obviously is a regional pallet for us. Our melting pot of diverse cultures allows us to experience so many different types of foods. Our rich diverse culture has privileged us with some of the best restaurants in the United States. Now, with that said... how would this ramen compare to that of it's native origin? I would have to say that its more Americanized. I ordered the miso ramen, I noticed it did lack a bit of the nuttier bean flavor I was looking for but, it was still savory and overall it had a good flavor. It just wasn't traditional. The ingredients were fresh and the egg was cooked perfectly as it soaked in the flavors of the miso. They do lack an array of rice wine but, have other wines to choose from. The ambiance is casual. The restaurant has a bar with wall mount TV's, booths along the side wall and tables in the center. The establishment was clean and the service was on point. If you're looking for an authentic traditional Japanese ramen bar this might not be the place for you. Not only is it closer to us, the restaurant is next to a movie theater, other restaurants, and ample retail stores-- a nice place to spend the evening! We arrived on a Saturday evening and was surprised to find the restaurant to be relatively calm compared to the bustling Yard House next door. (A month after their grand opening.) The decor is clean, modern, with elements of cool art pieces. Our waiter was attentive and courteous. We ordered the takoyaki and karaage for appetizers-- pleasantly filling while we awaited the main course. Specialty ramen #20 was flavorful, just not as spicy as I would like. The server even offered to move my friend's stroller into a visible corner so it wouldn't be in the way. After thought, I ended up getting the #19 ultimate tonkotsu white and asked for it to be spicy. The flavors were good. I appreciated that it was actually a little spicy. I wish the broth was a little richer, but I did get the 'white' version so maybe it was supposed to have a lighter taste. The noodles tasted good and were cooked perfectly. The fish slices (they're the cute pink things) didn't have much flavor, but I still ate them. My dish came with a tempura fried shrimp dipped into the broth, but by the time I got the dish and ate it, whatever was touching the broth was already soggy. My 2nd visit here. That's why I didn't order ramen but tried their Chashou bowl. Still stand by the 3 for the food. Pricing is understandable given its location but I wouldn't say I'm happy to pay such price for what I got. I'm not complaining just saying. Service was good. They just have ramen and small choice of appetizers so I'm a bit confused reading it's a large menu... I'll still eat there... but if only do I all of sudden crave for some ramen AND too lazy to drive somewhere else while shopping there... read more
