Visiting from out of town on vacation and decided to try this place with our group of friends. We made reservations in advance since we had been hiking all day and definitely did not want to wait! We were promptly seated but the place was bumping so the reservation was the way to go. It took a moment for our order to come out but hey, we get it, everywhere is understaffed and challenged so we had fun catching up and sipping our wine. We ordered the 16" Mushroom Pizza & the Mac & Cheese and shared both family style. If you are a fan of shrooms, get that pizza! It was so so good! Prosciutto, caramelized onions and perfectly cooked! This was a pleasant retreat from the disastrous food at the Big Sky Resort up the hill from this delightful location in town. It is a nice selection of delicious Italian dishes and excellent pizza. If you want pizza in town, avoid the others and head for Ousel & Spur. The staff is terrific, the chefs superb and the atmosphere has a terrific buzz. If traveling with a group, get a reservation and enjoy a wide variety of delicious wines and cocktails. Best food in Big Sky. When in Montana a while back we went into this pasta pizza place that my husband had been into on a previous trip. The reviews were pretty amazing so I knew I was in for a treat. Let me just say we called ahead for reservations and I am glad we did they had a table just open up. When we arrived the place was packed so you know that's a good sign. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. We needed up getting the bolognese pasta with the wide noodels....amazing would go back for that and a pizza. Now the crust on the pizza was pretty amazing but the taste wasnt great only because my husband added sausage and I hate sausage but that was his dish so be it. I would totally go back for the pizza (no sausage) as that wood fired crust was crispy yet still soft just what you want. When in Montana check this place out you wont be disappointed. read more

I know there has been some mixed reviews as of late but Ousel & Spur has it going on!! This place is hopping so reservations are a must! All age groups here including locals. Our party of 3 arrived early by 20 minutes and went in told the hostess we have arrived. She looked up our reservation and said our table is still occupied but they will text us when it is ready. Went around downtown Big Sky shopping and we got a text early and walked back a was seated immediately. Staff here are hard working and very courteous. We put in our order for the Elk Bolognese Pappardelle and the Winter Pie 16". We got our drinks promptly. The food came out pretty fast. The Elk Bolognese was phenomenal cooked to perfection!! The Winter Pie was amazing, crust nicely crisped, great sauce and toppings Yummy!! Of Course we went all in and had the Caramel Pretzel Brownie with Vanilla Gelato, incredible!! The atmosphere is great! The Burrata is amazing! However, if you don't specify you will be given top shelf spirits at an inflated price. Plus, since when do you have to specify that you want sauce on your pizza? We got it to go and when we got it home there was literally NO SAUCE! Food's great and we highly recommend the pizzas but this review goes past the food but for the staff and people who work there. One of the worst ice road conditions happened last night. So bad they had most reservations cancel. But they stayed open late for weary travelers stuck in between. Served us food but also helped us try to find options as the road was no longer travable. The snowplow trying to help on the road even got stuck. If it wasn't for the staff we'd have had to sleep in our car for the night. But they helped us not be in that predicament. I wasn't expecting much but the pizzas here pleasantly surprised me. Ingredients seem fresh and pizzas are easily customized. The crust here is super thin (think more crunchy than fluffy), so I wasn't the biggest fan as I tend to like my crusts more fluffy and less crunchy. (You know how if you've been chewing too much your mouth gets tired? That's how I felt after eating the pizza crust.) But of course, I doubt anyone is expecting pizza nirvana in Big Sky, and for a small restaurant in Big Sky, certainly not bad. It was packed when we came for dinner and ended up waiting 1hr+ for our table, so highly recommend coming early and putting your name down if you plan to eat here during peak ski season. read more

So that's to say my expectations of anywhere in the middle of Montana would be a little low. I was wrong. This pizza is so good!! I never had egg on pizza before but it worked. We've had nothing but great experiences at O&S, pandemic or no. We've been lucky to call Big Sky home for a while now, and these guys have stuck it out through and through. I feel like a lot of people forget that at the end of the day, this is a small, local pie shop that isn't meant to handle Vail-esque volumes, and still is expected to do so under wildly variant levels of pressure. Having worked in the food service industry ourselves, we've been constantly impressed by O&S's service, and they managed the load during COVID with a lot of grace. As far as food, you can't go too far wrong. We love the Montanan and can't help but order one every time we're there, but the salads and other pies are all spectacular. Their wines are nothing crazy, but they have a fun range and it's all palpably drinkable considering the fare. Find a quiet weekday evening to enjoy a round of apps, pizza and a nice red, and I can nearly guarantee you won't be disappointed. read more

The Montana pizza was amazing...great thin pizza with crunchy crust, nice blend of spices, great crunch from mini potato chips! The large Caesar salad was enough for 3...so we shared. The Wild Mushroom pie was not for me...a bit sweet...the goat cheese was 'eh...however my fam loved it. We finished with a brownie, sea salt, pretzel, caramel, ice cream sundae...amazing!!! Enough for 3 with a huge warm brownie and melting ice cream...soooo good! Interesting pizza options and both we ordered were tasty with plenty left to take home! He ordered one with date jam on it, which I thought would be much too sweet. It worked well with the prosciutto and I almost felt it would be a good breakfast food as well. The pizza crust was thin and crunchy, the sauces tasted fresh. We topped our pizzas with Parmesan and we actually nibbled on it by itself as well. My boyfriend wished there were some dipping options for the crust but that was his only comment. The pizzas here at Ousel & Spur are outstanding, and the service is both welcoming and friendly. There are a number of non-pizza items on their menu which look very good too. If it's pizza you're craving, you can either order one of their pre-set combinations from the menu, or you can do what I like and build-your-own; either way you'll end up with a damn good pie! I'm really glad we stopped here, and wouldn't hestitate to return when next I'm in the area. We've been in Big sky two consecutive years for Memorial Day weekend. Last year I remember it being SO good, we ate it two nights in a row, and I was excited to go again this year. My problem is the crust was SO thin! (See photo for reference) There was nothing to the pizza and for the price I was really disappointed, the quality was bad this time. I'm not one to complain but our pizza was not good! May not return just because the consistency doesn't seem to be there and I hate to risk being disappointed. Where to begin. They say a fish rots from the head down and that summarizes this place perfectly. The owner/manager here is a woman whose middle name MUST be Karen because, well, you know...read the other reviews. It's not a place to bother with if you want to enjoy your meal without the attitude. First off, the food is fine. The menu is limited (only one entree that isn't a carb dish) but the pizzas are decent and generally taste good. Second off, for the most part the staff do their best under what clearly are trying work conditions. One member of staff commented about how difficult the owner is to work for. Thirdly and most importantly, the ownership has zero business being in the service industry. They are routinely and indiscriminately rude to guests but this last visit took the cake. My wife doesn't eat pork and we ordered the mushroom pizza without pork. Sure enough the pizza came with some prosciutto on it. Not a lot but any meat sucks for someone who doesn't eat it (not controversial right?) I mentioned it to the server who offered to replace it and we ordered a margherita pizza even though we had all finished whatever else we ordered and were pretty much ready to go. It came, tasted fine, we ate two or three pieces total and asked for the check. The waitress made a big show of how she didn't charge us for the meat pizza. She was basically saying how cool they were to not charge for a pizza they served with meat. They didn't plan on comping they replacement either which is different to every restaurant I've ever been to who would go out of their way to make up for a mistake like that. I gave her my credit card and told her I would be happy to pay for the replacement pizza but I thought it was a bit lame that they didn't acknowledge that it was a big screw up. The waitress told me she was the messenger and it wasn't her fault that they put pork on the pizza and rolled her eyes. We paid and were walking out...WHEN THE MANAGER APPROACHED US AND ACCUSED US OF TRYING TO SCORE A FREE PIZZA. A free pizza. Really? We spent a lot of money on dinner and have been there multiple times. I've never wanted a freebie in my life. She was rude, told us we were the "weirdest people" and basically went off at us even though we were leaving without making a big deal at all. We didn't even take the barely eaten replacement pizza. She treated us like scam artists after THEY made the mistake. I've never felt so disrespected. She accused my wife of making a bunch of reservations and habitually canceling which isn't true and when we have canceled we have always done so with a days notice. We won't go there again. The entire reservation process was smooth like butta, from initially making it to the follow up call, from the restaurant, to confirm. However, adding the option of making a reservation though their website or the yelp app would be nice. * Food: Burrata = Great: This app was served warm, which we weren't expecting. Caesar Salad = Great: The Caesar dressing was very tasty & bright with a nice hit of lemon. The house made croutons had a good garlic flavor. Tortelloni = Good: Pretty sure they're Tortellini's big brother, look it up. The overall flavor was good. Sauce was light. Unfortunately, the temp was on the cool side when this dish hit our table. The Hazelnuts tasted raw. No hint of a cook on them. A quick toss around in the pan would have elevated those guys. Margherita Pizza = Terrible: Pizzas only have 3 major components: dough/crust, sauce & toppings. All 3 of these things missed the mark for us. No way around it, this pizza was way overcooked. Most slices were totally black on the bottom. I debated taking a pic, but it just seemed like bad form, so I didn't. We're accustomed to gooey/melty Mozzarella on our Margherita pies. This cheese was somewhere near the intersection of waxy & rubbery. The sauce suffered from too much Oregano. I quite like Oregano, but I also enjoy tasting other elements of a sauce as well. * Other: Interior = Great: Everything I observed was clean & the decor was nice. We had reservations as a group of 5 but decided due to extreme weather to go pick up our pizzas instead of eating it at the restaurant. So we decided to place an order over the phone and cancel our reservation. We walked into the empty restaurant to pick up our order only to find out we get charged 20 per person for canceling our reservation (not made clear up front). We were not even allowed to reverse our reservation and sit in the restaurant. When talking to the host about how it's a win win situation where the host would get a seat opened up for another customer while still making money from our order, the host was just very rude and kept on stating that they have policies (I understand but you do not have to be rude about it, maybe have a little of empathy maybe understand the situation). The pizza is generally good but there is something fundamentally wrong with service. I'm specifically talking about take-out. I've just had some very strange experiences there. The first couple times I chalked it up to someone having a bad or weird day. But this time it was made obvious that it's just amateur hour. Was given boxes and no fork for take out. I asked for a bag and fork because I'm driving. I was just handed the bag to sort out on my own, and handed a fork with the person touching the part you eat from. Also, $10 for a "Cesar Salad?" It's such a shame because Big Sky really needs more small business restaurants. The worst experience I've ever had walking into a restaurant and expecting reasonable service. We were told they were understaffed and were only doing to-go orders. We asked earnestly about what restaurants in the area were actually serving a meal (I'm with my wife and daughter).
