The short version is if you're in the NYC area and don't have a car, Outhouse is likely your best option but it won't be cheap. It was more than $50 for admission and apples, but you'll find few bargains in this category. As a benchmark, a place in Warwick has free admission but requires a $40 apple purchase. Outhouse is a better late-season option than most. As of last weekend, the Macs were past their prime but the Ida Reds were abundant and available on easy-to-reach trees. Mutsus were longer but Suncrisps were a reasonable non-red alternative. There was a decent stash of Fujis. There's a good chance of finding taxis at the Croton Falls station. There's more traffic to the orchards than from, so when making your reservation expect possible travel time of 20-30 minutes up the hill. You'll want to take many photos of the excellent scenery, from corn mazes to rolling hills, but keep your phone charged for a return Uber or Lyft; waiting and surge prices are possible but I haven't been stranded yet. read more

Really wanted to love this but unfortunately there wasn't much left to do (also prob because it was the last of the season). For the entry I felt like there could be more to do. There's a lot of add ons like corn maze and apple picking but that's on top of the already steep price. The hay ride was cute, but as they were driving near the apple trees, we could see that most of the apple picking is done. Good thing we didn't pay for a bag. You can actually purchase good looking apples at the produce stand in the front. Parking spaces were ample, a lot of portapotty and some fun activities here and there like pumpkin patch photo ops, duck race, a bouncy house and a hay stack. The only saving grace was the food. It was actually decent pizza, chicken tenders and fries. The apple cider donut was okay, sweet but not as fluffy and soft as I hope it to be. The hot dog was a miss. read more

Second year coming back. Great for kids. We walked and did some apple picking, dropped the bag off at the car and spent the afternoon having beers while the kids played. Plenty of lunch options, we had the wood fired pizza and it got devoured. Lines for the pizza and the beer were quick and easy. The donuts are a MUST! Overall a great time, again. read more

Then we went on a nice hayride it was a beautiful day and very relaxing. Next we walked the paths and hills and picked different varieties of apples . Only thing is most of the apples were on the floor or up very high . Which causes people to shake the tree and damages the apples as they fall . Such a cute and amazing market. Loved it. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well. We went during the week so it was nice calm and peaceful. The pumpkin patch was nice and big. The pumpkins were already picked and just layer out for you to pick, NOT on the vine. There was no food during the week, but I did see stands and according to staff there open on the weekends. Where to begin? $100 for a family of four to visit, the pumpkin patch was another $50 for 4 pumpkins, corn maze and apple picking were not included . Cowboy "entertainer " on the hayride talks the entire time, insists my Autistic son 'look at him' while using him as the butt of a joke and then points out all the Latin folks on the ride and sings 'La Cucaracha' to them!?! Con: The only bathrooms are several port-a-potties (thus the name?) 4. Con: There are no maps and no signs indicating the varieties of apples. Terribly run orchard! You pay a $40 entrance fee and then you pay for apples. The apples were no longer on the trees, only on the ground. Unfortunately they were bruised, rotten or damaged by insects. I understand farmers need to make money during a few seasonal months, but this place is shady, scummy...whatever you want to call it. Really enjoyed a trip here for apple picking! Tons of different varieties and the apples were all delicious. The corn maze is excellent and one of the best I've seen, the cider donuts are delicious, and the food choices are top notch (the wood fired pizza is amazing!). We really loved it there. Not too long of a drive from NYC, and once you're there, it's a very immersive experience. Any age can find something to do there, and the staff is great and friendly. Apple picking is what you'd expect, and please please please don't skip the pizza stand. These guys are the unsung heroes. Making New Haven style pizza that's absolutely worth the price. I've been to this orchard twice now. The first time was back in 2021 and it was lovely. Quiet and quaint. Loved the fact that we had the option (think it was beginning of September) to pick apples, pears and peaches. Fast forward to 2024. Went over this past weekend and this place has changed. Very popular now which is great but not enough services/staff to support the amount of guests coming through. For the wins...liked the pumpkin patch and the kid activities available like bouncy house, bubble fun, and duck race. Also like the fact that pups are allowed. For the "opportunities", food selection was limited. There were only a few stands...with pizza or burgers/hot dog as options. The lines were insanely long and the wait for the food even longer. Not enough tables and chairs to sit and eat. Needless to say by lunch we had a grumpy bunch who were not much in the mood to pick any fruit. I will say that the hay ride was enjoyable with live singing but thought it was strange hay ride did not stop at where you wanted to pick fruits. You had to walk from orchard to orchard and with no signs you're walking aimlessly most of the time. There was a lot of fruit on the ground making it difficult to walk also. I've been to a number of orchards and it seems much messier here. Thought odd there were not many employees guiding people where to go. For the most part you scan a QR code for a map (which is outdated) and figure it out on your own. No signs anywhere to establish what type of apples were on the trees. Will likely not return here as my last experience was more of a zoo than an orchard. read more

But the experience my group had was outrageous. - Sat in traffic for an hour and a half at the entrance because their ticket checkers check tickets while people are in their vehicles. There are two lanes. Tickets are sent by email, and service is spotty. Someone has a problem with their ticket? Everyone behind them has to wait. We got there at 1:30, and parked at 3:00. This is not only a huge pain, but creates a massive road hazard with cars backed up for a mile - surprised the town even allows this. - We get in and order food. More expensive than many Manhattan restaurants. $18 for a turkey leg. Outside food is not allowed on the weekends when this food is available. - Porta pottys were horrible. Really gross - not enough for the amount of people there. - Picking apples was $30 for a bag, $45 for a large bag. You pay $25 to even access the property, then another $30 at minimum? You're now in the hole $55 to pick apples. Larger prepacked bags were selling for $15 in the farm stand. Also no signs to identify which apple trees correspond to which cultivar. You have no idea if you're picking the kind you want. - Finally the pumpkins. $1 / pound from this tiny little off-the-vine fenced in area. Doesn't sound too bad until you see larger pumpkins at Trader Joes the next day for $4, when you just paid $20 for yours. I understand pumpkin patches are going to charge higher prices, but 5x the price? Come on. I expected expensive, but wouldn't write a review like this if I didn't know there are far cheaper orchards upstate and in Jersey for a much better experience. You are getting ripped off for an incredibly subpar experience. Very disappointed with Outhouse Orchard, will look elsewhere next year. read more

We were very rudely stopped by a uniformed police officer who essentially said you are not welcome here without a ticket, and to leave now providing no alternate suggestions. Outhouse Orchards is a great farm to visit, especially in the fall. It's a beautiful expanse of land, with fresh apples and beautiful trees, a pumpkin patch filled with pumpkins and gourds ranging in size and variety and a cute, yet sizable farm stand shop with delicious jams, jellies, pies, donuts - the best homemade donuts, and the freshest, home grown tomatoes, corn, apples and other produce farm to table...they also have hayrides, live music, food trucks and pre-Covid a bouncy house for the kids, which hopefully in time we will see again (they are not a good idea in the Covid era) Worth mentioning, they are also very nice there. Considering the volume of people and how busy they get, it feels like a friendly family farm. The owner even shared the story of how the tractor near the front by the sunflower patch was his Great Grandfather's near the first apple tree they had planted. The prices may seem a little high, but they really aren't keeping in mind that if we want to keep having farms to visit in our future, they have to charge to keep things running, keep them fresh and keep them local. After frequenting this farm for the past 5 years-- I can say I was in shock when they charge $20 per person in the vehicle. $20 per person includes nothing but parking your vehicle. I invited my parents & siblings to celebrate my birthday to go apple picking. Just in parking we spent $300!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (4 cars, 15 adults/young teens) I now question why we even did it!! Outhouse has apple picking, hayrides, a covered farm market, cider donuts, some local vendors, cider donuts, friendly staff, cider donuts, and a long line for cider donuts. Bags for apple picking run $30 for small bags and $45 for larger bags. They take Apple Pay throughout. I'm a fan of green apples, so start to the left if you're like me. The earlier in the season you go, the less you have to jump and climb for good apples. Note that this is not an organic orchard, so clean the apples before you eat them. Soooo much fun here! Me and my girls came out to do a little apple picking and photo opp, obviously. Each car has a $12 entry/parking fee. Not bad at all. Although we went late in October, there were still a significant amount of apples for us to pick. Each bag is $30 - with us kind of pricey but worth the experience. 4 people can share a bag. They also have vegetables to lick as well. A few friends grabbed a few peppers and kale while we were there. It's important to note they have REAL food and a great store. They offer hot dogs, burgers, pizza, fries and the real star of the show, apple cider donuts. I've been to three farms this fall season and these donuts were by far my favorite. So appley (is that a word) and just OMGGGGG. We ended up taking the apples we picked that day and made a pie/crumble hybrid. I included the picture because obviously, you care. Very disappointed, and it seems I'm not the only one based on recent reviews. I've never been to an orchard where they charge for parking and require reservations in advance, but they had a lot of activities so I figured it was fine. Unfortunately, they charge for every single thing. The website is not clear that you MUST pay $30 or $40 for an apple bag just to get into the orchard, in addition to your advance parking and reservation charge of $30. It's a lovely little orchard with well organized market, food stands/trucks, and nice staff. We had a great time here. On the third Sunday of October, it's not crowded and there's almost no line for most of the stuff here. The only line we waited is only 5 minutes to get the apple picking bag. There are plenty of open space for kids to run around and it's just a beautiful and relaxing experience for us. The hayride is $5 each for age 4 and above. It's about 15 minutes drive around the orchard with a live cowboy guitar performance. For apple picking, a small bag is $25 and a big bag $35. The small bag is good up to 40 lbs which is a great option to us. The apple picker is each $5 deposit. We didn't go too far into the orchard but only picked the one ( cortland) that's the closest to the entrance. Apples were all on the upper part of the trees and a picker is a must. There were buckets of already picked apples ( Fuji, honeycrisp, etc) on the way out for you to fill up your bag. They have a little bouncy house $3 a child for 10 minutes. It's right next to the picnic tables and a great set up for adults to have some after-picking rest while the kids play. Apple donuts and cold cider are delicious too! We live in Manhattan and usually rent a car to get out of the city. This weekend there's seriously not a single zipcar available for a day trip, so I decided to try to take public transportation the very first time to go apple picking. Since I want to minimize the traveling time, the farm/orchard options are pretty limited. With metro north it's about an hour from grand central to Corton Falls, then a 5 minutes cab ride to both Harvest Moon and Outhouse - the drop off and pickup point is right in front of the Harvest Moon. Really adorable, dog-friendly, manageable, not-too-busy orchard nearby. This is the secret go-to, way less crowded and better run than Harvest Moon. It's got a great corn maze full of facts you have to find. My only quips with this place are that there's no signs near the apple orchards so you don't know the kinds of apples you're picking and no candy apples at the shop. read more

I really didn't like how I saw people stuffing their stop and shop grocery bags with apples when we paid expensively for our multiple large bags. You guys removed certain trees in the parking lot that had really delicious apples last time. We went a bit further to get them and it wasn't the same. First time we got apples, I was eating 2-3/day but with a mix of new ones last time, I only ate 1 apple every few days. Only old fashion donuts were available, I was disappointed. Even the girl there said they're the same as the apple and pumpkin donuts. No they're not lol they distinctly have different taste to them. Her taste buds must not be working. The apple strudel was yummy. The pumpkin pie was way too sweet and too strongly spiced. When we got home, we saw that it leaked sugary liquid and wasn't a fan of the apple jelly. I was afraid that there wouldn't be any apples left or that the crowds would kill us. However, the orchard across the street with the shiny fall festival vibe attracted the majority of the crowds. In the morning there was enough space and plenty of apples to go around. Luckily you can do your apple picking here then check out the festivities across the street when you're done. Shuttle from the metro north is $5/head. Be sure to rush off the train so you don't have to wait for the next round of vans. They can take about 40 people each round. I was pleasantly surprised by Outhouse Orchards. We have gone to numerous farms throughout the tri-state area. I would say this is one of the more basic places BUT with that came a lack of crowds (we got there at 9 am.) You buy the bag ahead of time $25 which is similar to other places BUT this bag is 2x-3x larger. I could take a star away because it is very hilly and the grass was very high and scratchy but we really felt that we would be happy to come back and recommend it to others. Growing up, I used to frequent this orchard, as in- every year my family would go to this place for apple picking.. Sadly my family moved out of the area, and the drive has become too far for us to make it work. Every other orchard we have tried just doesn't come close to the magic that we experience when we go to Outhouse. Anyways this year we decided to go back. It wasn't me and the immediate family member's I grew up with, it was my new family, my wife, infant daughter and our next door neighbor Ralphie. We had a blast! This orchard is owned and ran by the Outhouse family. They are great people that try their best to make everyone's experience special. There is many different veggies and fruit available for purchase, hay rides, corn mazes, and tasty snacks too. My favorite part about going to pick apples isn't even the apples themselves, because I am highly allergic to them, so I just like to have them on display in the fruit bowl on my counter (I usually wind up giving them out to the trick or treaters in my neighborhood that I dont like).. My favorite part of the orchard is the tent where they sell popcorn. The vendors that run the popcorn station are great people, another family operation. They even accept money through Venmo! The product that they deliver is second to no popcorn I have ever had, it's crunchy, buttery, hot and fresh and the kernel's don't get stuck in your teeth! A quick story thats unrelated to the popcorn itself but directly related to the butter. This most recent time I was at the orchard, I was enjoying my fourth bag of popcorn when I accidentally let go of my babies stroller. The stroller began to roll down the hill, so I started to scream and run after it but the handle was just out of my reach and I could get to it. Running as fast as I could I just barely got a hand on it, but the butter from the popcorn made the handle way to slippery and my hand lost its grip - I fell flat on my face trying to get to that stroller. In the moment I was eating the popcorn so ferociously that I didn't even realize that my baby had not been in the stroller, she was in my wife's arms at the time. So I basically ran after the rolling carriage, down the hill and risked my well being for no reason. The vendor at the popcorn stand, went down the hill after me and he pulled me up off of the ground and on to my feet, with his strong arms. Everyone was pointing and laughing at me, but not this man, this man understood, and he cared. His name is Mike. I feel like I have known him for years just by the way he has treated me, he carried me back up the hill to his tent and he administered first aid to all of my scrapes and bruises. His wife Theresa, is the co-owner of this popcorn operation, she gave me a free bottle of water and a handful of napkins, because I had been crying so hard. For all of this I am forever grateful. This family took me under their wing on one of the worst days of my life.. I highly recommend going to this orchard and I highly recommend visiting the popcorn tent. read more

As a local resident I usually steer clear of the orchards particularly in the fall when mostly out of towners come up for apples, cider donuts, pies etc. nothing against them but local roads become crowded and difficult to navigate prices are steep, but the duration of the sales window is somewhat limited.
