Wasn't happy with the quote. Also the owner, Ryan comes across as rude and belittling.

We brought in Outlandish Design-Build (ODB) to do our front yard project late last year and completed in February 2020. We had been following ODB over Instagram for a few years because we really liked Ryan's approach to design, ideas and materials he worked with so when it came time to start our project ODB was at the top of our list. We looked around at different contractors but ODB really stood out because they brought modern landscape design ideas to the table which is what we designed our house to be. Existing site conditions: 1. Our front yard was a little challenging because we have about a 5'-0" elevation difference between the public sidewalk and the front door. We had old brick stairs in the middle of the front yard with irregular risers/treads that were injury prone so we were anxious to get these taken out and replaced. We had old brick wainscot at the front porch that we want removed to clean up the entrance to give us a wider porch and provide clean stucco walls surrounding the porch. 2. We had an existing sprinkler system that needed to be replaced and had areas of the front yard that didn't have irrigation so we needed to establish new lines to areas of the yard. 3. The existing grade had high and low points which caused pooling of water during rainy days so we need to re-grade the upper grass area to correct this. Proposed Site Updates: 1. Remove and relocate stairs to adjacent driveway to allow for an expansive front yard. 2. Install a new corten steel retaining wall alongside the new concrete stairs. 3. Install new irrigation (sprayers/drip) to new landscaped areas. 4. Pour new concrete walkways, driveway and stairs all at once so all concrete matches. 5. Install a small water feature at the front porch I'm posting before and after pictures of the build out. The house was already painted, metal roof was already in place so the landscaping was the final piece to the puzzle and it turned out amazing. We couldn't be happier with ODB. There were some challenges along the way and Ryan was a trooper and handled it professionally. My god, there was so much dirt that was generated from this project. My wife requested a small water feature at the front of the house and Ryan came back with this nifty idea to pick up a rock, core drill a hole and install a pump underneath and it turned out amazing. We hired Ryan & his team to complete our full yard renovation, inclusive of: building a fence, irrigation, removing overgrown trees & plants, leveling land, installing a garden bed and planting many fruit trees. We hired Outlandish Design to renovate our backyard/patio area and could not be more happy. We wanted turf instead of real grass to have less upkeep and Ryan knew exactly what to do. He took into consideration that we had a dog so finished off our installation with special deodorizer and made sure everything was completely perfect. He has extensive knowledge of plants so could recommend a great solution for hiding unsightly walls (he introduced us to Star Jasmine which climbs walls and smells good - we LOVE it) and did an excellent job building a trellis for us, building out wood trim for all our plants, and making sure the whole yard looked clean and polished. Outlandish is a top notch company with wonderful service and we just can't say enough good things. Amazing! This was my first house project and I was nervous about finding a person/ company I trusted. I was getting other bids and Ryan returned my phone call one day and visited my house to get an idea of what I wanted. My goal was quality at a reasonable price. A week later he contacted me and gave me a reasonable bid much lower than other landscapers I was in contact. Even though another contractor immediately dropped their price, I trusted Ryan to give me quality since he shared he went to cal poly Pomona to study landscaping. He completed the job on time with his crew. He was easy to reach by text and gave me updates while I was at work. His crew was hardworking and respectful. He made me feel comfortable throughout the whole process. Last minute when I asked him to trim a tree here or add something there, he easily accommodated. My sister and I inherited a 1922 Craftsman house in Monrovia that had been a rental for the past 35 years. We both live out of the area. The landscaping had either completely died or gotten severely out of hand. I called a number of landscaping companies, before finding Outlandish Design, Inc., and talking with Ryan. I couldn't be happier to have been so fortunate, as he's the best contractor I've ever worked with, and I've worked with a few. We essentially had to start over with the entire outside property demo and then collaboratively design new lawn, sprinklers, drip systems, plantings and trees. While we were doing this, we increasingly expanded the scope of the renovation and repair work we were doing on the main house and duplex on the property. Even though this interrupted his work schedule over a period of months, Ryan and his crew were very forgiving and readjusted their work as needed. He also found and oversaw contracting work we didn't originally plan on, for a new fence and removal of a small forest of 'weed' trees. His design suited our need for drought tolerant landscaping and beauty consistent with Southern California tradition. Ryan has two things he focuses on: working with the customer whenever needed, and taking pride in the finished project, down to the smallest detail. Since I live in the SF Bay Area, we couldn't have finished this project without Ryan taking responsibility beyond my expectations, including taking pictures and keeping me up to date about the whole project. With a recent house I was remodeling I needed a landscaper I could trust and knew what they were doing. I interviewed several landscapers and when I finally met with Ryan, I knew he was the one. Not only did Ryan list to what I wanted to do, but he also gave suggestions on what I could do at the minimal price possible. When the bid came, Ryan not only broke down each area, but he included pictures with the quote! Now that is one thing I have never seen and I must say it was extremely helpful since I don't know all of the plants we discussed. He saved many time from having to google everything. Not only did Ryan provide great service and a bid that I understood he also was very patient with me. I couldn't make up my mind on what I wanted to do and had a budget that I had to work with. Ryan was by far very patient and gave me different suggestions on what I could do and at no time tried to push me to spend more. Finally I made my decision and Ryan started work. I have never seen someone work so hard to meet my deadline of 7 days. He worked every day and finished in time for me to list my home. Ryan is a landscape artist who works with a palette of many colors. He selected plants for our front yard that we would have never thought of and the resulting layout has garnished repeated compliments from neighbors and people who are driving by and stop to compliment the yard when I am out at the front of the house.
