Happened to drop in with some colleagues after work on a Wednesday. (13 December). The place has a nice decor and ambience but the service needs to improve. Pros:- Excellent ambience and decor. Very spacious and has a walk up space if you want to use it. The happy hour deals are pretty good. Cons:- The toilets are dirtier and smellier than a porta potty after the NYC Marathon. The service is iffy at best. The lady serving us constantly kept getting our drinks mixed up. Unusual to see a waitress getting a Lager and a IPA mixed up. Also, she was not able to recommend any Irish Whisky. The snacks are good; though you should ask the waitress what exactly each dish contains, to avoid getting served something you didn't want. Yup, happened with us. The busboys seemed in a hurry to clear the tables. I am yet to see a place where they whisk off glasses with Alcohol remaining, WHILE the guests are still sitting on the table. Came here 2 weeks ago and went upstairs to the fake outdoor roof top which was a cute set up ...my Asian guy waiter was really sweet and the food was good typical bar food . Alright! This bar has happy hour 2 beers for the price of 1! Not a bad deal at all. They even bring you 2 beers automatically when you order. Way to go! They also offer $25 unlimited tacos and sangria/beer (not a bad deal). My colleagues and I came here last week for a work-related happy hour. At first I didn't realize that this place was really a Chicago fans bar (you'll see memorabilia for Cubs, White Sox, etc. on the walls, as well as TV screens tuned into games coming to you from the Windy City). Nevertheless, the Chicago presence is really not overdone. On tap, this bar has quite an array of beers, all of which is displayed on a chalkboard across from the bar. You'll also find your standard assortment of wines and spirits, as well as standard pub food. I did not try any of the food in this particular instance but would venture back to try some in the future. So why 3 stars? If I were a Chicago sports fan, this place would easily be 4 stars. As a New Yorker, this bar is simply what's expected in midtown. With so many bars to choose from, it's rather tough to earn a 4 or 5. This place is a solid choice though! Typical, gross, overpriced bar food. Small portions, bland, but they make sure to throw in tons of butter for "flavor"... just gross. I paid $14 for two empanadas that were mostly dough and had almost no flavor. Our waitress, Carolina, SUCKED. She never even offered us water - after 30 min. or so we finally asked and even then it took another 10 min. to come. And it's wasn't even busy - we were one of the only tables there. One of my friends asked Carolina what from the menu she would suggest - and Carolina actually said "I don't eat here, the food is gross". Big red flag. My other friend said she wanted something spicy and Carolina said she could just bring hot sauce for whatever my friend ordered - the hot sauce never came. Carolina was so rude and obviously discontent with her job. At the end, we left her a $6 tip for 3 people... she came back to us and angrily asked if something was wrong with the service, almost like she couldn't believe she had done a bad job. How do you politely tell something that they just suck?? Girl should be lucky she event got $6 - what other job could you have where you get paid to be a jerk? We took pity on her. read more

My very favorite karaoke host just kicked off what will (hopefully!) become a regular Tuesday night gig here and, if night one was any indicator of what's to come, I think this will become a regular weekly stop for me. The crowd was great (engaged, supportive, talented, etc.) and the space works quite nicely for it. There was also a paint and sip type class going on towards the beginning of the night -- seems like these guys take their events programming quite seriously. From what I saw and smelled, the food seems to be as good as people are saying it is -- looking forward to finding out firsthand next time. read more

We were there for after work Friday night drinks, at the end of the night we went to pay and there were several drinks added - lucky we check these things. Very poor customer service. I get it, this place is a dive bar so I wasn't expecting much but the service is really terrible. Drinks that we didn't order were added to our bill and we had to fight to get them off, I asked for a water that was never delivered, fries were served cold, no ketchup, condiments or napkins given to the table when we ordered food, the waitress gave our round of drinks to another table who gladly accepted the free drinks, then we had to track down the waitress, when we finally did we had to reorder our drinks. Some dive bars work well but this one doesn't because the staff need more customer service training. People don't expect much at dive bars but they do expect the basics like hot food, napkins and correct drink orders. Customer service 101. Will be going elsewhere next time. read more

This place was awesome! I truly believe it was fate that lead me to this place. My first night in New York I was supposed to meet up with my coworkers, my boss, and our brewers from Japan at Sakagura. The cab driver dropped me off on the wrong street right in front of Overlook. I saw a Chicago Bears flag on the outside of this bar and I thought to myself, "I should probably catch the Chicago Bears game here on Sunday." I worked and drank all week then Sunday finally came. I just wanted to rest and watch the Bears game. I came in to Overlook and it was filled with Bears fans (awesome). They had a raffle going on and everyone was so friendly. Somehow they found out that I was Bears fan who was visiting from Hawaii and they announced it on the mic and gave me a free shot (talk about trying to take it easy and rest my liver). Well the Bears beat Tampa Bay that day and it was a good day that was made even better by friendliness of all the people that were there at Overlook and a good buzz walking out of the bar at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I definitely recommend watching the Bears game here if you are a Bears fan and in New York City. 5 stars! I definitely will be back the next time I am in New York. read more

Ugh. I don't wanna go to another east side suit bar but, my friend said they had a rooftop and the best fries. I was a little skeptic on the latter . I walked in and surprise, not a lot of suits! The bartenders were friendly and made great drinks. Now let's sample the food! I have to say, these were some of the best fries I ever had and I have had a lot. I was told that it was a two day process to get them that perfect. To make me more enamored, they had interesting dipping sauces to accompany these slices of heaven. I chose the Chipotle-Lime dip as I heard it was the best. It was. Then I sampled the Fried Bocconcini Mozzarella Balls. They were like little mozzarella stick meat balls that melt in your mouth. I fell in love. The only problem was me and the ladies had such a great air conditioned spot at the bar, we never made it to the rooftop. I've been coming to Overlook for a while now, but a lot of times I sort of just dash in and out for a quick drink with coworkers. Last night was the first time I had gone and stayed for over an hour while several of my coworkers and I enjoyed drinks and some bar food. We sat in a nice, enclosed open area (sometimes it's open) on the upper level. This gave us a nice feel of being outside while being sheltered from the elements at the same time. Service has always been pleasant and prompt. Overlook is always willing to rearrange tables to suit groups (which they get a lot since corporate groups come a lot). The first floor has some small tables, a bar and huge booths that can accommodate about eight people or so. Lights hang all over the place and one booth even has illustrations on the wall done by some famous newspaper artists. It's really quite the atmosphere! The drinks are not watered down and come out quite tasty. Their bar food is pretty insanely good. Their fried raviolis are perfect "Bad for you with alcohol" food and in contrast, their tomato with mozzarella comes with a nice pesto sauce (a surprise in a bar). They also have some super tasty fries that comes with a delicious mayo based dip. You probably get the idea that you don't exactly come here for healthy fare! That said, there are larger dishes such as burgers and pasta dishes. I enjoy hanging out here, and its proximity to my job makes it even more cool. During Happy Hour (currently 4-6pm), drinks are two for one, but don't expect this joint to be cheap otherwise. The food is about average for the area in terms of price. read more

My husband and I came to Overlook last night for some celebratory cocktails (I had just taped a segment for the Rachael Ray Show which was conveniently right across the street) - I have to say, it was absolutely perfect for what we wanted. Dimly lit bar, casual, not too crowded (happy hour just ended) and we got seats at the bar immediately. Bartender Number 1 had no personality and was boring (boo!) but made me a delicious apple martini (yay!) - Bartender Number 2 was freakin adorable, talkative, snapped a photo for us and was just a really nice guy. I've been to Overlook twice now-- once I was downstairs to watch the first U.S. World Cup game this past June. This is a good bar for watching sports, as each booth gets its own TV to control. However, I was a little annoyed with experience number 1 because the bar was completely overwhelmed and understaffed. It took at least 10 minutes to get a drink, and although we had a waitress, we hardly came by. I once came back from the bar certain that all of my coworkers were going to laugh at me for waiting up there such a long time because the waitress certainly would've come by at least once... but she hadn't. The bar, though, redeemed itself to me last Friday night with its rooftop. Rooftops are great in New York, but they're also often super overcrowded, so the relatively sparse crowd here on a weekend night was a really nice surprise. We got seats right away, no problem. And the drinks were affordable -- $4 Rolling Rock and $5 Pinnacle flavors all night after happy hour. We had some fun with the ridiculous Pinnacle flavor choices (salted carmel, whipped, cotton candy, atomic hot, etc). The bar staff upstairs was friendly and considerably less frazzled, so I'd like to think the staff was just thrown off guard by the World Cup crowd on my first night. Another thing about the rooftop, at least for right now, is that construction is being done on both sides of the building, so the view is much nicer than it would be otherwise. Nothing too fancy up there, but it's so nice to be on a rooftop in the beautiful New York summer weather that I had to give this place 4 stars. read more

3.5 Stars My best friend said this place has the most reasonable prices in the area, so I followed her lead. I dig the two for one happy hour prices they have. Actually, I wasn't expecting such a sweet deal. I ordered a hard cider and got two for $6.50 (bestie did the same). We also ordered food - she went with a cheeseburger, I went with mild wings, and we split an order of fries. Everything was not only well priced, but also tasty - thank goodness. At 5:55pm we wanted to order an additional cider before happy hour ended at 6pm. We still weren't done with our first bottles, and we couldn't order another drink until we finished at least one. We guzzled down our first bottles, and finished at 5:58pm - just in time to order another. When we waved our waitress over to order, she was definitely giving us that judgmental stare. Listen lady, when you're on a college student and college grad on a budget, these are the kind of struggles you have to face. Ok so rating stays the same because it's the only bar in town that draws a dedicated and rabid Bears fan base. The food is still average but they've made strides in the right direction. The game day Chicago focused menu has some new additions but more importantly they finally made tweaks to improve the food which I found pitiful and lacking. For one the Italian Beef actually is not bad and has real giardinera for once. It's huge and a pretty good rendition although the au jus is a little too thick and gravy like, not to mention everything is a tad too salty. The Chicago style hot dog finally resembles a Chicago style hot dog with actual sport peppers, green relish, pickle spear, tomatoes and celery salt. Overall I think the food is still very very average but food to see a move in the right direction! read more

An interesting Midtown bar. They have really good mini burgers but on Tuesday nights they also have Karaoke. If you enjoy having a drink with the shrieking sounds of those who don't know time ,how to carry a note or cant simply sing, then this is your place. I'm talking Randy Watson of Sexual Chocolate awful. One of the interesting points of the space is the original Cartoon artwork that lines the rear walls of the bar. This must have been a drinking spot of the old time cartoonists, 1960s and on. I recognized most of the characters but many I didn't. They were before my time I guess.. read more

Great local sports bar! My boyfriend and I moved to the area recently and the staff was super welcoming and friendly (despite me being a Packers fan). This bar has a lot of character and there's plenty of space with multiple stories and an open-air bar upstairs. The draft beer selection is solid and we've had the Buffalo chicken wrap, turkey burger, chicken tenders, and tacos - all pretty good! If you're looking for a cheap weeknight meal, they have $2 tacos (beef or chicken) on Tuesday's which is hard to beat in this area. read more

I went there to plan a large event to check it out, and ended up coming back several times in between. For those looking to plan a large event, Overlook is a great spot. First, its convenient - just a block and a half from Grand Central. The upstairs has several tables, that can be easily moved and converted to a dance floor for people to mingle. There are several big screen tv's for watching the game or promoting your cause. One of the major draws, especially in the spring and summer is the 2nd floor roof deck, which can easily fit 50+ people. The owners were extremely accomodating and willing to work with our group. We had to make some last minute logistical changes, and they were able to adapt without complaint or an issue. All in all, over 300 people came out and everyone left a fan of Overlook. The food was great, staff was down to earth and really chill, and everyone seemed intent on making our event a success. I'll be back at overlook for the food, drink specials, and atmopshere and am happy to book a larger event with them again. read more

Went in for a beer with my brother during a night on the town. Got charged $10 for a relatively small cup of beer (it's midtown Manhattan, so I assume that's normal. Depressing, but normal). Asked the Barman if he could fix us up a bomb-shot / depth-charge (literally a beer with a single shot of hard liquor in it, not exactly the most complex drink you could come up with). He looks annoyed, goes "No", turns away. Apparently our suggestion offended his artistic sensibilities. So after he notices we're still there and decides to saunter over, we literally ask him: "Can we get one beer and one shot of cheap whiskey?". He rolls his eyes, finally concedes to do what the customer actually asked for. Mmkay. "$10 bucks for the beer, $10 for the shot". Twenty bucks for a small beer and their cheapest hard liquor they had in the place. And just about the shittiest service I've gotten in a pub. Gave him exactly one (undeserved) dollar for a tip, and left. read more

When my friend approached me about doing the Taco Tuesday here for $25, I was skeptical. $25 for unlimited tacos and beer/sangria in Manhattan would leave any New Yorker skeptical. I was even skeptical upon reading about some of the reviews on here about it. But decided, it's $25, how bad could it be? I'm glad we came here. For $25, you truly get unlimited beer/sangria and tacos for $25 for two hours. Mind you, you're in a bar, so you're not getting fancy tacos or amazing sangria. You're getting bar tacos and bar sangria, it's good and gets the job done. Our server was extremely attentive and kept asking us if we wanted more. There was a dude who kept coming around with pitchers of sangria and shock top looking to fill us off. We each had about 9 tacos each, and could've had more if we wanted more. Even after our "two hours" expired, our drinks got topped off once more. I understand why some people may expect the tacos or drinks to be top notch, but remember where you are and what you're paying for. The tacos were tasty and the drinks were good. For $25 each on a Tuesday night, honestly, what more could you want? This is a good place if you are a bears fan and are looking to watch the game with other fans. They have a miller light bucket for $20 which seems to be popular among most patrons. I had a burger from here, I think wings would have been a better choice. The burger was ok somewhat mushy and was small. The outdoor seating is nice. Make sure you get here early and if you want to watch the game outside make sure it is not that sunny as the projectors outside get whitewashed from the sun. I love this place! I've been coming here for about a year and there's such a good vibe. Taco Tuesday is a deal you can't beat, and they have karaoke too!! Every night they have different deals after happy hour going on which is fab. During the summer they have the patio open upstairs and it's a great place for parties, and they even have a tent upstairs for the winter which is great for sitting outside when you need to get some air without the wind blasting you. Disappointing experience last night. I've been here a few times in the past and had last night not occurred I would be giving a much better review. I went there with some friends but arrived just after 6, missing the happy hour. We were happy to see though that it was wine Wednesday, so at least we could take advantage of that special. I asked the waitress what white wine fell under that special and she listed down a few choices, and I asked for Reisling. She came back a moment later to say they were out of it, so I asked again what the other white options were that were part of the special and she repeated them, including prosecco as an option. I chose that, and went about ordering food with my friends. When the bill came I saw that the prosecco was charged as $10, not the $7 as described by the waitress. By this point our section was taken over by a different waitress, so when I questioned the price she just said that that is the price. But myself and everyone at my table shared that we weren't told that the prosecco was higher priced than the rest of the wine options. She went back and the manager then comes over with the menu to show me on the paperclipped sheet of paper in the menu that the prosecco is $10. I guess I missed it, but stated that when I asked the waitress for the options she didn't tell me it was higher. He then went and got the original waitress and she comes and states that she told me it was $10. All my friends and I are shocked at this point, because basically the manager and the waitress are going out of their way to tell me I was wrong and they were right. Finally the manager says let's call it $8 and that's fair for us both. I was left speechless. If my friend wasn't trying to catch a metro north train I probably would have protested longer but at that point I just told them to fix the check and let us be on our way. I realize this is just a $3 difference, but rather than take the L on the waitress making a mistake they all basically tried to say I was lying. Awful customer service. Great local spot with a killer staff of folks. Friends and I are in town for a Confrence and this spot was just the local joint we wanted. Not too crowded matched with good music, amazing decor showing some original cartoon drawings from patrons back in the day. The owner was there and made my crew and I feel like we were friends from college coming through for some local atmosphere and hometown brews! Great staff, amazing rooftop area and good eats.
