When our breakfasts arrived the toast wasn't brought out, we asked for our toast and waited another 15 minutes for it to arrive. One star given for the slow and forgetful service, not for the broken coffee equipment. read more

Great location! We had a cozy spot by the pool with a view of the ocean. Food was great! Service was so-so. The main server was good, but the other helpers were inattentive. No steak knives provided with steaks. When we asked for knives, the helper said, "ok" - non-committal. No surprise, she never came back with the knives. read more

My four star rating is for the food and our dinner experience. Everything was lovely and our waiter was attentive. We were guests at the hotel and also had breakfast here which was not as great as dinner due to the lack of staff. Our waitress did her best but I think she just had too many tables. The food was delicious but we were served our food and I had to get up to get my husband his salsa because our waitress was nowhere to be found. Also the table next to us was seated just before our food arrived but were never attended to the whole time we were eating. They weren't even brought water until we were basically done with our meal. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. First the food took a long time to come out, then everything came out raw. Burgers were raw and the chicken was pink! For the price, you expect good food and service. We had to send 5 of the 10 plates back and they came back raw! it was an absolute mess. Not to mention my sister-in-law is pregnant! Then we got to our rooms and our stomachs were hurting. The manager did apologize and gave us 50% off, but even with 50% off we were over $300! The more I think about us paying for that experience, the more it upsets me. We were celebrating a special occasion, and my son-in-law leaves for deployment soon. This place went through a two year renovation. First and foremost, the service and staff is outstanding and very attentive . I really like that there is such a variety of seating areas. Table for two, different options for table of four from comfy couch to traditional table and chairs the bar is big and vibrant and outdoor seating from beach view to garden view with a nice fire pit. I ordered the ahi tuna crudo, brussels sprouts and the, both were delicious. OMG the cheesecake pudding!!!!! Definitely enough for two but I couldn't help myself and kept eating. Let's start with the Ahi Tuna Crudo: very nice presentation. The ahi was really fresh and had my tastebuds bouncing. The hint of citrus, slight crunch of the black sesame, and the heat /spiciness of the wasabi made the whole dish come together in harmony. The Brussels Sprouts was very tasty and perfectly cooked. The green onions, chili flakes and sour cream was a nice touch. However, the dish was a little too salty for me. I still ate all of it. SMH. The cheesecake pudding. Omg. It is so good. You have to try it. Filled with blueberries, lemon curd, and not your typical graham crackers. I felt like I was eating a bowl of cereal. Sadly, I ate most of it myself. I think I most obsessed with the muscles in red curry but also the golden&red beet goat cheese with avocado creamy purée- The steak was beautifully cooked (I like medium rare) and generous and sourced from Snake River Farms. Finally got to take Michael for his belated birthday dinner to the Ox and Ocean at the beach in Oxnard. The beautiful restaurant, grounds, pool and beach are somewhat isolated so the manager and server were very friendly as most guests were staying at the adjoining hotel. Another uninvited guest greeted us as we came into the lobby, Santa Claus. We started with cocktails, Michael the Harry's Berries smashed and I had the Blueberry basil margarita then lobster bisque and roasted delicate squash with kale pesto, turmeric yoghurt, dukkah and Vella dry jack cheese. My son went all in on this restaurant's theme and had the Oxtail Bao Buns with hoisin, cilantro and kimchi and I had the grilled pork chop with honey glazed acorn squash purée, apple bacon chutney, chive and crushed pistachios. For dessert we shared the cheesecake pudding with lemon curd and blueberries. The joke of the night was everything I ordered the server said was the best on the menu. I told him he probably says that for every dish but the manager of the restaurant came over and confirmed my choices. The squash was good but an extremely large portion and a bit heavy, but the pork chop and apple bacon chutney was superb. We could not order the "best on menu" dessert as it wasn't GF for me but the cheesecake pudding was excellent. The chef uses locally grown products in all the dishes. read more

Extremely SLOW service. Wait time of minimum 1 hour for food. They don't even have enough staff to accommodate their hotel guests. They are understaffed at all times and the employees that are working are overwhelmed and annoyed. This has been going on for over a year. horribly managed. First off, let me say the restaurant is beautiful, and the staff are efficient and friendly. However, beware if you get any food here "to go." Not only will they not honor the posted, menu prices, they apparently have a secret menu for any food you take to your room. I ordered two children's breakfasts to go. The fruit cup was $11 on the menu I was hand given. Yet when I went to pay, it was magically $15. My other order also had an additional $5 added to the menu price. Additionally, a 20% automatic gratuity was included on the bill. I asked the server about the price difference and she said "oh, are computer is acting weird and putting the wrong prices, let me get my manager." The manager then comes over and explains that getting food "to go" is more, and that the kids menu I was given when placing a to-go order at the hostess table was "only" for dining in. Never once was I told this before placing my order, and the waitresses apparently didn't know about the price adjustment either. Lastly, for a $15+ fruit cup, the portion sizes are laughable (see photo), and the fruit was mostly cantaloupe. No strawberries at the "strawberry capital of the world" in sight. I realize this place is at a "resort", but we're in Oxnard, not Hawaii. They (Mandalay Bay) will nickel and dime you for everything here, so beware. We enjoyed the Eggs Benedict and the Hamburger that we ordered. The jalapeño fitter had corn kernels in it; made for an interesting and creative base. If concerned there are heating lamps all around the space. I also thought it was cool for the bar to have dual access to clients outside and the other side of the bar serves those inside, Our server was great. I had the pork chop which was 4 out of 5 in terms of taste and my ma got the halibut, which she said was good. Everyone enjoyed their food for the most part. With laughter, we're not sure what we were eating that was slimy which Is served with the steak. Pay attention to other people mentioning the food also being a hair disappointing. We had an excellent experience and ordered the Black Garlic Caesar Salad, the Chips and Fresh Guacamole as well some 18 year Scotch and an Espresso Martini. Wow, sitting outside and watching football on the 75" TV on this beautiful Sunday afternoon was the perfect end to the holiday weekend! Kaylynn was so warm and personable. The greeting at the host stand felt cold and unwelcoming, which clashed with both the atmosphere and the celebratory mood we had brought with us. A senior staff member--possibly a manager--ignored us entirely, leaving it to a junior team member to acknowledge us. We inquired about availability and were told it would be an hour wait. However, the tone used felt more like an attempt to discourage us rather than welcome us. When we asked about the possibility of bar seating, the response was curt and dismissive, making us feel as though our question was unwelcome. We took a quick look around the bar area but ultimately decided to leave, as neither of us felt comfortable with how we'd been treated. It's unfortunate, as we were genuinely excited to experience what Ox & Ocean has to offer. Unfortunately, the service left a sour first impression. Missed opportunity. Later that Evening... When we left, we decided to head up Harbor Boulevard to Brophy Brothers in the Ventura Harbor, and what a phenomenal experience it was. Came here for lunch on a thursday. Restaurant is located in Zacari Dunes Hotel. Hotel has a nice lobby and ambiance and is on a beach. Walked from our neighboring resort. Looks like you can easily park for free at the public park next door and walk over. The Burger was good. $28 was a bit steep for burger and fries but it was tasty. The strawberry hamf pie was good. The kale salad was absolutely tasteless. Do not get it. It looked pretty. The steak was nothing special with a small portion. I ordered medium rare and it came out well done. Chimichurri sauce was meh. Fries were good. Lavender strawberry lemonade was meh. Save your $10. I also thought the outdoor seating would be beachfront. The service here is consistently excellent, and the ambiance is great. While the dinner menu is a bit limited, I tried the pork chops, mussels, and sea bass. The sea bass was a small portion, leaving me still hungry afterward, and the pork chop was a bit dry. This is our fourth visit to the Hotel Zachari Dunes, and we keep returning because the location and hotel are truly lovely. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the service at Ox and Ocean. We've dined here each time we've stayed and have consistently found the service to be unbearably slow. On past visits, we assumed the delays were due to ongoing construction, but with renovations now complete, the issues persist. During our most breakfast and lunch it took 10-15 minutes just to be greeted after being seated, and nearly 45 minutes to receive our meals. We truly want to enjoy this restaurant as part of our stay, but the continued service delays make it very difficult. We hope to see improvements in the future. read more

This restaurant is in a cute hotel with super nice staff and decent food. The mussels could have used a bit more flavor 3.5/5. Maybe add chorizo? The pork chop was good 4/5. I was expecting it to be a thicker cut. However, the flavors were good....especially the bacon! Unfortunately, the restaurant does not have an ocean view. For some reason, I was expecting this and what I was mostly coming here for. Overall, it is a good experience. I don't think that I will drive out an hour for it in the future though.
