Lovely small Japanese restaurant hidden away in Conifer, CO - look for it! We saw the Yelp reviews, and after our wonderful experiences with other highly-rated Conifer establishments, we wanted to try Oyama. Though small, with seating for about 40, the space is well-appointed and beautifully decorated. We were greeted and seated immediately by friendly staff. We ordered iced tea while we looked over the menu. There were lots of choices! We ordered some gyoza as an appetizer and each decided on the chicken tempura bento box for our entrees. (It was a nice surprise that their lunch specials are offered 7 days a week, since the bento boxes were only available as lunches.) The gyoza and our iced teas came out first, followed quickly by the soup and salad which accompany the bento boxes. Everything looked, smelled, and tasted delicious! When they arrive, our bento boxes were lovely and intriguing. The tempura veggies and chicken were piled high with two each of chicken, onions, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin in perfect tempura batter. The box also included two cheese wontons, four pieces of California roll, rice, tempura sauce, and a sweet sauce (like plum sauce). It was a lot of food! I've been here a few times now and this place has 100% accuracy for me. It hits on all levels. Smoked salmon sashimi, eel sushi, and tako sushi were perfect. Gyoza and green tea fried ice cream topped it off nicely. Worth every cent. read more

Solid Japanese rendition of dishes. Had Yakisoba which was good, not lacked the shreds of ginger root which would have been these. Also a roll whose name I forget but it was good. The chicken katsu was very good as well. The creamy cucumber salad was liked by both of us and the seafood salad was fine. We got takeout. Inside the restaurant it was quaint but sufficient. Having a long trip going from Iowa back to LA and dined in at this restaurant. Staffs are very friendly. All sushi are very fresh and tasty! The sashimi melted in my mouth. The food was just OK, plated nicely, but overpriced. The service was very good. Ambience... not sure they know what that is. But the kicker was the sneaky fees on the tab that sealed their fate. First the PIF fee (I get that they don't control it, but they should be up-front about it), then the Kitchen fee (they do control). I didn't scrutinize every line item on the bill, so who know? There may be more. If I get charged extra fees that I'm not made aware of up-front, I don't return. I won't return. read more

Came here with family to celebrate two early birthdays, it's my last night in town and we wanted to have a nice dinner to celebrate. For drinks we had a large hot sake and one large beer. We started out with a couple simple appetizers, edamame, crab cheese wontons, and they were executed perfectly. Salads next with miso soup that came with our meal. The ginger dressing was delicious, worth finishing the salad just to get some more of that dressing in my face. We ordered chicken teriyaki and rice for the kids, sushi and sashimi deluxe with an ichiban roll for the adults and some extra sushi items to round out the meal. Good sized pieces of sushi, well prepared- and we enjoyed everything. My 3 year old niece destroyed the tuna and salmon sashimi. I loved the ichiban roll, the sushi was all delicious and my personal favorite is the inari- fried tofu pockets stuffed with seasoned sushi rice. All three children are well, and shockingly enough ate plenty of sushi and apps. The desserts didn't last very long at all. As I was still debating eating more, I decided to order one more order of crab cheese wontons and an order of takoyaki to go. Delicious. Service was great, for a Monday night they weren't crazy busy so we got to eat very quickly. For dessert, we ordered two mango mochi ice creams for the ladies, and one tempura vanilla ice cream for my nephew/the table. Destroyed everything. So disappointing! The service was good but the crab Rangoon had maybe a teaspoon of crab (imitation?) split across 6 pieces. The premium and regular rolls had the fish mash mixture as a filling rather the pieces of fish. We had 3 different rolls and all had the same blah filling. Super legit. The fish is SO fresh and there are so many delicious rolls from which to choose. I'm a bit of a sushi hoarder and a sushi snob (sushi chefs love me!) so we ended up ordering at least 8 rolls and sushi pieces. They arrived beautifully arranged on a sushi boat! We ordered some entrees from the kitchen as well and I was pleasantly surprised to see (and eat) large prawns in the shrimp fried rice. I'd recommend the takoyaki and uni (if it's available) when dining in. Can't go wrong with katsu as well (the protein to rice ratio is very favorable towards the protein). Dine-in options are available and the wonderful & friendly staff absolutely practices safety measures. We've ordered dinner to-go once too and quality was exceptional as well. My wife and I both loved the tonkatsu. In my humble opinion, the pork broth was just right. We both finished every drop. We have been to some ramen places in Denver recently, and the broth was just too over the top. If I had a complaint, it's minor. My egg was hard boiled rather than soft boiled. Cons -Look, we are in the middle of Colorado so fresh fish isn't exactly easy to come by. A welcome addition to our mountain community. Fish is fresh and the rolls are tasty. Ramen is good too. Our 2 previous visits were stellar: one dinner, one lunch. Tonight (Friday) was a different story. Granted, we did choose Friday at the height of dinner rush, but our service was slow and disorganized. I don't mind waiting for food when I know it's good and the place is swamped. But to wait more than 30 minutes for sake is not acceptable. The yellowtail was good, and I highly recommend the kani salad. My rolls, however were obviously made before anything else, and the rice/tempura shrimp was soggy from the eel sauce. It's not a game breaker for me, but more organization is needed before the COVID restrictions are over and things get really busy. read more
