5 Stars - Authentic Szechuan that absolutely nails the classics…read more During our short trip to Houston, as a custom, we were determined to find real Szechuan food, and luckily we found Hu's Kitchen. The location is a bit unassuming, and parking is definitely tough (the spaces are very shallow), but the second we walked through the doors and smelled the Szechuan peppercorns, I knew we were in exactly the right place. I generally judge a Szechuan restaurant by their 夫妻肺片 (Fuqi Feipian)--which they cleverly name "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the menu. They completely nailed it. The beef, tripe, and tendon were incredibly cohesive together, yet you could tell each component was prepared and marinated in a slightly different way to perfectly highlight its specific texture. The chili oil was right on the spot. We went through a massive bowl of rice just eating this dish alone. Honestly, if I weren't feeding a family of four, I could have just ordered that and been perfectly happy. While the Fuqi Feipian proves their skill with dry dishes, the 水煮魚片 (Fish in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil) proves their skill with wet ones. It's another must-order. The execution was flawless--we didn't just finish the tender fish chunks, we ate every last piece of cabbage soaked in that incredible chili broth. For my two daughters who can't handle the heat, we ordered the fried rice, garlic pork ribs with onion, and the 紅燒獅子頭 (Giant Meatball with Cabbage). The giant meatball was spectacular. The kids completely devoured it on their own, but I managed to steal a bite, and it instantly brought back childhood memories of exactly how this dish is supposed to taste. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. I loved all of the dishes we tried. Should we ever find ourselves in Houston again, we will absolutely be revisiting this hidden gem.

The Scallion Pancake was super over-fried and oily. See image in my review. The outer parts of the pancake were fried to a crisp and only a small circumference in the center stayed chewy. I know Chinese tends to be oily but this pancake soaked up way too much oil. Half a Peking duck: super great price for so much meat. The difficulty when eating this dish is gnawing the meat off the sharp bones of the duck. Mapo Tofu with white rice: pretty easy staple, no complaints here. Dinner on a Saturday was packed but we got seated quickly and food arrived fast.

They really committed to a specific industrial, techno-chic look with neon signs, animated menu boards, exposed metal, acrylic panels, textured wall details, and movies playing by the bar. The theme is carried throughout the whole place really well. At the same time, all of the metal and harder surfaces can make the inside feel a little cold and unwelcoming. There isn't much traditional indoor seating. Most of the seating inside is at the bar, with additional tables outside under some shade. Because of that, it's probably not my first choice for sitting down for lunch during a hot Houston day, but it works really well as a pickup or takeout spot. The staff has always been friendly, and they have a good system for getting people in and out. The parking lot is a little small, but since a lot of people seem to be picking up food, spots turn over pretty quickly. Overall, The Rice Box is convenient, dependable, and does what it does well. It definitely feels like a chain, but the design has a strong personality and the food is consistently good. For entrées I had the Salt Pepper Fish Slices while my friend went with the Ingenious Fried Beef. The Fish Slices were very seasoned and flavorful, but a bit dry. The batter was good and I really enjoyed the peppers and onions that accompanied the dish. I think a dipping sauce would have helped. My friend enjoyed the Fried Beef. They have quite a few locations around town if you don't want to venture into the downtown area. If you're near the Theater District, Cooking Girl is a great dining option.

My recent visit to PF Chang's was truly everything I needed. Before I even stepped inside, I noticed how thoughtfully the experience is designed. The parking directions were clear and easy to follow, with signs guiding you both from the street and again as you enter the garage. That small detail made the arrival smooth and stress‑free, something I appreciated on a day when I simply wanted peace and quiet. As I walked into the restaurant, the first thing I saw was the hostess greeting guests with a warm smile, setting a welcoming tone from the start. The staff's cleanliness and professionalism were immediately noticeable; everyone looked polished, attentive, and ready to provide great service. Then I met KIARA, my waitress, who genuinely made my day. It was my off day from work, and I came in hoping for a calm, relaxing meal. Kiara delivered exactly that. She checked on me six or seven times, not out of obligation, but with sincere care, making sure my food was right, my experience was comfortable, and that I had everything I needed. Her kindness, attentiveness, and warm personality made me feel seen and valued. She was the highlight of my visit. I ordered the Firecracker Shrimp lunch special, and while the shrimp weren't cooked to my personal preference, a bit underdone for my taste, KIARA handled the situation gracefully. I prefer my shrimp well‑done when grilled, so it may have simply been my taste buds. The edamame, however, was delicious, and I loved that it's now offered as a perk through the PF Chang's Rewards Program. Hint, hint: you really should join, it's free, and the perks are worth it! I also enjoyed the BBQ Pork Spare Ribs, which were amazing, and I switched my entrée to the Kung Pao Chicken, which hit the spot. To finish my meal and celebrate my birthday, I indulged in the Butter Cake, which was the perfect ending. Another standout was JOSH, the Corporate Manager. Instead of simply overseeing the floor, he actively assisted the staff in clearing tables, supported the team, and remained engaged. His leadership was hands‑on and genuine, and it was refreshing to see a manager lead by example. KAYLA, the restaurant manager, was also wonderfully friendly, professional, and clearly invested in creating a positive environment for both guests and staff. Every person I encountered exemplified professionalism, kindness, and pride in their work. The restaurant was clean, the staff was polished, and the service was exceptional from start to finish. The food is nothing short of perfection, with each dish prepared and presented with speed and precision. While the views may not be the main attraction, the calming ambiance of the restaurant makes up for it. However, one small area for improvement would be the attentiveness of the servers. While they are friendly and accommodating, it would be great to see them pay more attention to the tables they are serving, especially during busy times. They meet for lunch afterward, and now it's become one of my absolute favorite spots. It's wonderful for groups of any size, the staff is always attentive and friendly, and in all the years I've been coming here, I've never had a bad experience. Everyone I bring ends up loving it, too. What's funny is my friend Sal was in town from Chicago this weekend and had actually lived in Houston for 25 years himself. He used to come to nearby spots like Garson and Antonio's Flying Pizza all the time but always turned his nose up at Vietnam Coast because of the outside appearance. Last night he finally came in and absolutely loved it. I almost always start with the Vietnamese egg rolls, which are deep fried and served with lettuce, cucumber, cilantro, carrots, fish sauce, and spicy red sauce. You wrap the egg roll in the lettuce and customize it however you want. They're fantastic. I also love the Vietnam Coast Beef entrée itself, which comes out in a little boat with beef, jalapeños, onions, green onions, and rice. But last night I ordered my favorite dish: the Vietnamese beef fajitas. They are SO good! You build your own wraps using rice paper with lemongrass beef, carrots, pineapple, bean sprouts, cilantro, noodles, fried onions, fish sauce, and whatever extras you want. I always add fresh jalapeños. My only annoyance--and it's minor--is that sometimes they bring lukewarm water for softening the rice paper. If the water isn't hot enough, it takes forever for the wrappers to soften, so definitely ask for hot water if needed. It makes a huge difference. I also love their Thai tea with boba. Considering the quality and amount of food, it's still very reasonably priced even with inflation. Two people with Vietnamese egg rolls, the Vietnam Coast beef entrée, and Vietnamese beef fajitas, two beers, and a Thai tea with boba came out to just under $60. Additionally, the restrooms are always clean, there's always a good crowd, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. One more positive thing that did unexpectedly come out of the afternoon yesterday: the back parking lot has a curb filled with roses and purple heart plants, and they must have cut the purple heart plants back, but just left the cuttings all over the surrounding parking spaces and on the curb itself instead of discarding them. I have an incredibly brown thumb, but these plants are incredibly easy to propagate and bloom the prettiest pink flowers. I ended up leaving with an armful of free propagates for my garden, which had bloomed by morning even while still in a grocery bag. Those cuttings honestly may have been the highlight of our visit to Vietnam Coast this weekend. . This place is absolutely worth visiting.

The flavor was pretty good and had that strong Sichuan pepper spice that lingers after a while. My issue with the tofu was the consistency of the sauce. I found it to be very thick and clumpy in an unpleasant way, almost like eating little gelatin pieces. I would probably come back to try it again just in case this was a bad batch, but it's hard to compete with wanna boa's mapo tofu. - Spicy and Crispy Chicken (4/5): Pretty juicy and crispy chicken with a slight kick. I love anything fried chicken so I did enjoy this dish but it was pretty standard and there wasn't much to write about. - Red Oil Dumplings (3/5): Pretty standard oil dumplings. They weren't really spicy which would be good for people who can't handle spice. I think I would've liked a bit more meat filling but overall not bad. - Dan Dan Noodles (3/5): I loved the texture of the noodles but I found the sauce to be kinda slippery which made it hard adhere to the noodles. I also thought the flavor could've been a bit stronger. Service/Ambiance: the interior of this place was super cute, especially the upstairs area. I loved the dim lighting and tiny table lamps which gave this place a cozy romantic feeling. The outside was also interesting with an all black exterior and no sign. That might make it hard to notice or find the restaurant, but that did give it a more hidden feeling which was nice. Parking was also abundant and service was great!
