AMAZING place to eat!!!! I took my girlfriend here for date night on valentines day and it was perfect! We had a reservation for 5pm, but we decided to try and go there early and they took us back immediately. I was surprised at the lack of customers inside because this place is spectacular. The food was delicious. They had a delectable burger and the fries were perfect. The cornbread skillet was great. It tasted like jalepeno & pepper jack cheese, but not very spicy. The ambiance is very aesthetic and romantic. There are pretty chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. They were playing classic 1940s/50s music inside. Very classy. Staff were all friendly and our waiter was a humorous guy.

We were originally going to go to the restaurant down the street, but they did not have any available tables so we kept walking and found this spot. Service was amazing. We were well taken care of and our servers seemed very knowledgeable about all menu items they were very kind. Also, we were sat right away! I ordered a 10 ounce hanger steak and the steak was a little overcooked for my liking (more medium rather than medium rare), but my husband said his steak was perfectly cooked rare. The smoked corn sauce at the bottom of the plate was the most interesting addition. I've probably tasted so far in a dinner entrée meal. The taste was corn, smoked, and nutty. At first it was very odd for me but I ended up really loving it. The potato salad was phenomenal. I almost liked that better than the steak. Brussels sprouts tasted good with flavor, but I do not like it when restaurants leave the bottom of the brussels sprout on the little knob that sticks out of them. I prefer that to be cut off... so I didn't enjoy the full Brussels very much. My husband loved them though so maybe it's a personal preference on texture for me. Our friends got the mac and cheese pot roast and said it was really good just very thick and rich. Espresso martini was good - but it's not made with real espresso. Overall we really liked this spot! It should probably be more busy but I liked getting seated quickly. Decor and seats in the booth were also very comfy!

Nice location downtown. The people were friendly. The space seemed a little haphazard and not well kept. The food was okay but let's face it .. I did not try slanting adventurous. The wedge salad and the strawberry salad. Both were good.

Great little spot in downtown Asheville. Great staff that are knowledgeable about the menu, greta drinks, and nice menu. It was a good spot to stop in for a quick bite while we were exploring downtown.

Stopped off in Asheville for a one night stop and our hotel didn't have dining so we looked for a place to grab a bite. This was pretty close by so stopped in for a bite. Cute little place and staff was friendly and prompt. The lump crab cakes were incredible and drinks were really good. The only real rub against our visit was that the area we were seated in was empty except for us. A couple other customers came in and they sat them right beside us. We thought it was to let our waitress run less but it was a different waitress. We were almost rubbing elbows with them. Seriously? Dozens of open tables and have to seat them there? Kind of put a damper on the good time.

Deviled eggs. Honey and bacon were amazing g additions!

What a cute little corner spot to stop for lunch. We were wandering around looking for a lunch spot when the street menu caught our eye. The staff was quite friendly, although the service was quite slow. I will say the deviled eggs were quite amazing and the crab cake was filled with so much meat. The house salad was surprisingly wonderful. All in all a great experience.

Stopped in for just a drink, spent $20 and enjoyed the view. Andrew the bartender is good, very busy but attentive to everyone. The food looked amazing, but heading out to home. The host was great also. No worries about here. I will come back for food.

On our way out of Asheville we stumbled across Carmel's Kitchen & Bar and we thoroughly enjoyed it!!! This restaurant has put a twist on southern cuisine and they've done a good job!! My husband is a true meat and potatoes southern boy and he cleaned his plate (which he rarely does outside of eating my cooking). He ordered the fried chicken with collard greens and mashed potatoes. He first said..."this is pretty good"! And midway through he said "actually this is VERY good...how often do I say THAT???"!! Which is a TOTAL compliment coming from him. I ordered the grilled salmon, bacon cheddar grits and collard greens. The dish originally came with green beans but I swapped them out for the greens. My salmon was cooked to perfection!! It had the crispy edges!!! The grits and collard greens complemented the salmon perfectly. The only thing that was missing was some cornbread which we didn't know they had until midway through our meal when we saw that someone else ordered it. I told my husband that we've found our Asheville SPOT!!! Carmel's serves deliciously well priced food so we will definitely be back!!

Although there isn't a Happy Hour in North Carolina, I must say the service was great thanks to Andrew. The ambiance was cool was a nice evening and right before my lash appointment. I opted for the Whiskey Wednesday and Truffle Fries which consisted of Parmesan Cheese, Fresh Herbs, Black Pepper, Toasted Garlic Aioli. I enjoyed the flavor of the fries but I would recommend using a lighter oil as the fries were pretty heavy with grease. Otherwise the flavor was on point. I do think I will try the restaurant again, perhaps for dinner. Until next time...Cheers!

Stopped in for lunch while shopping downtown Asheville. They have both indoor and outdoor seating with a nice bar. Our server was very friendly and on top of things. I enjoyed their wine list as they had both American and no -American wines. I had a glass of the Italian Sangiovese and it was soooo good!! We ordered fried green tomatoes, truffle fries, cheese flatbread, and chicken pesto flatbread. It was all very good. The pesto tasted fresh. The fried green tomatoes had a good crunchy coating. We really liked the crust on the flatbread as well.

I found Chestnut on Yelp and decided to wander in. The space has this elevated modern rustic vibe with a southern twist and a little bit of sass. They even sell shirts that say neither hoity nor toity, which cracked me up. Honestly, the atmosphere was great, but our waitress was the real star. She was absolutely phenomenal and looked after us perfectly. My palate was pretty fried, so I started with a Bloody Mary to wake up. Truth be told, it was just okay. The house mix had an odd flavor that nobody at the table could quite identify, and it seriously lacked spice. It was just kinda bland. I noticed a bottle of Firewalker hot sauce on the table, and splashing that in helped a little bit. After that, I transitioned to a mimosa. You really cannot mess up a mimosa too much, and it was a solid, reliable second drink. For the main event, I ordered the southern chicken and waffles. This came with a fried chicken breast sitting on golden malted waffles, smothered in sausage gravy, and drizzled with chipotle honey. It was a really great dish. The kitchen did a solid job with the fry on the chicken, and the gravy had a nice flavor. It leaned a little on the sweet side because of the honey, but it was not totally overdone. The real sleeper hit of the morning, though, was the side of cheesy grits. Those grits were absolute heaven. They were incredibly creamy and perfectly seasoned. If you go, you have to order them. Chestnut is in a great location, and despite the weak Bloody Mary, it was a stellar visit.

Worth Planning Your Asheville Trip Around…read more As a Bay Area foodie, navigating around San Francisco's incredible restaurant scene taught me to appreciate thoughtful cooking, quality ingredients, and genuine hospitality. Chestnut had been on my Asheville dining list long before I arrived, and after spending several days exploring Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, I made it my dinner splurge before heading home. It absolutely delivered. A quick tip: skip the hunt for street parking and head straight to the garage across the street. The first hour is free, and downtown Asheville can be congested with both vehicle and foot traffic. I arrived around 5:30 without a reservation and was warmly greeted by the hostess, who offered me a table or a seat at the bar. Asheville was surprisingly hot and humid compared to the cool mountain weather I'd been enjoying, so the air-conditioned dining room was an easy choice over the sidewalk patio. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Fresh flowers, warm lighting, elegant stone countertops, comfortable booths, tables, and bar seating create an atmosphere that feels polished without being stuffy. What stood out most was the mix of guests. There were locals greeting staff by name, couples enjoying date night, families with children, and older guests gathering with friends. It felt welcoming and comfortable for everyone. As a solo diner, the bar was the perfect choice. I enjoyed all the energy of the restaurant while still having a peaceful dining experience. I started with a glass of Brut Rosé from Spain. Crisp, refreshing, and beautifully balanced, it was the perfect way to settle in after a warm afternoon. Then came the Lobster Bisque. As someone who has made lobster bisque from scratch, I know the work that goes into creating a great one. Chestnut's version, made with Oak & Grist Reserve Cream and finished with fresh chives, was outstanding. Rich, silky, velvety, and loaded with tender pieces of lobster. If I'm being incredibly picky, I would have enjoyed just a touch more sherry, but that's purely personal preference. The smaller serving vessel kept the bisque hot from first spoonful to last, which I appreciated. My only complaint was that I wanted a larger serving because it was that good. For my entrée, I ordered the 4-ounce Petite Filet. The steak arrived cooked a perfect medium rare with excellent flavor and texture. It was served with butter-whipped mashed potatoes, haricot verts, a crisp potato gaufrette, red wine demi-glace, and chive butter. Every component was thoughtfully prepared. The demi-glace added richness without overwhelming the beef, while the potato gaufrette provided a delicate crunch. My only minor critique was that the plate could have been served a bit hotter, but the quality of the food more than made up for it. One of the highlights of the evening was the service. Taylor, part of the management team, was personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. After my sparkling wine, he suggested a half-glass pour of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir since I was driving. Excellent recommendation. The wine was elegant, earthy, and beautifully balanced, pairing perfectly with the filet. As the evening progressed, the restaurant filled quickly. Watching the staff greet regulars by name and efficiently manage the growing crowd spoke volumes about how well-run the restaurant is. You could tell many guests were repeat customers, which is always a good sign. After dinner, I attempted to walk off my meal through downtown Asheville, but the summer heat quickly convinced me to head back to my hotel. I left full, happy, and already thinking about that lobster bisque. For a Bay Area foodie who plans entire trips around memorable meals, Chestnut exceeded expectations. Great food, thoughtful service, an inviting atmosphere, and a dining experience that felt special without trying too hard. If you're visiting Asheville, put Chestnut on your list. Life is too short for mediocre meals, and this one is worth making time for.

Google calls it "American" cuisine, which is basically the one cuisine I don't do, but this place does offer some nice vegetarian options. Wanting to save some room for my food tour, I got a salad with a veggie skewer on top, but I did indulge in some lentil fritters. Fried bean paste is always a winner (technically lentils are not beans). The fritters were savory and the clash between their freshly fried texture and the cool dill-flavored dipping sauce and mixed pickled vegetables was quite robust. My salad delivered the promised crunch, and the shiitake shishito kabob had a wide variety of freshly barbecued vegetables, but unlike my appetizer this dish was missing an extra flavor touch. The mussels were easily the standout - absolutely delicious and something I'd come back for. The lamb was also very tender, and both the salmon and chicken dishes were good. It may have just been an off night, but our server felt a little scattered. One of our guests was initially served a lukewarm, flat Coke in a very small bottle, which was surprising for a restaurant of this caliber. To her credit, she replaced it with a Mexican Coke and didn't charge us, which we appreciated. Still, overall guidance on the menu and pairings would have elevated the experience. At the end of the day, the biggest issue was the pricing. The food was good, but not nearly good enough to justify how expensive everything was.
