I'm truly confused as to why this place doesn't have more reviews. When I was asking around for where to venture to get a cake for a birthday this place came up more than any other place in the city. I was told how great the cakes were and that the prices don't really hurt the pocketbook either. I ventured in after finding a spot on the street for parking. Once inside you can tell that this is a neighborhood favorite. While I was looking at the cases of treats to be had, a multitude of people came in asking for certain items without batting an eye. An obvious nod that this place knows what it is doing. I continued to browse the cases and decided that I was being distracted too much by the goodies and needed to focus on purchasing a cake. I finally get to talk to an employee and asked about the cakes. I was hoping to get a white cake and inquired about one. Instead I got a rundown of every type of cake they had. This was done really fast and actually kind of efficient. That's great and all, but with me being a first time customer and not knowing how things are run here, it was a bit overwhelming. (This is also the reason for the star deduction) I kind of felt as if I was a burden and not a customer at that point. Because I asked again about a white cake and kind of got a brush off comment about how fast those go and if I wanted one I should have called ahead to order one...blah, blah, blah. Again, first time customer here. Anyway... Let's talk about the cake, shall we? I decided to go with the two tier cake with chocolate on the bottom and yellow on the top. Nicely decorated and they do add lettering on the spot for you. It was kind of mesmerizing watching them box it up. Looking away and carrying on a conversation, all the while their hands are doing their own thing and making sure that box is shut and tied for you. Paddy Cake Bakery has the best buttercream in the city. My family is very particular about vanilla buttercream... typically we think it's either too sweet or doesn't taste like anything. BUT, paddy cake's icing is PERFECT. I could eat a whole bucket of their buttercream! The cakes are delicious. However, their decorating could improve. read more

Every year we go to Little Italy Days and every I enjoy one of their ladylocks. It was so hot today that we took the opportunity to visit their storefront. I was blown away by how cutely decorated their cakes were. They seemed to have a decent selection of baked goods ranging from cupcakes and cookies to pastries and cakes. To keep tradition going, I purchased a lady lock and added a vanilla cupcake with chocolate icing to my order. Both were delicious! The employees were friendly and helpful. I've gotten all of my sons cakes here from Christening , to themed birthday party cakes with the cutest being a fire truck made out of cake with doughnuts for the wheels . I have seen the quality of their cakes & decorations lose that special touch they once had, along with the quality of all their products. Along with the product quality decreasing the employee staff has hit such a ALL TIME LOW leaving me to say that I will NEVER go there again. I was waiting in the store, it wasn't that crowded, there was 1 girl on the phone, 1 waiting on another customer and then there was this LOWER THAN LIFE STAFF waiting on a mentally disabled man and his mom. He was having some issues with trying to figure out what he wanted, which did not bother one other person in the store, well except for the staff person who said, "my shift ended 15 minutes ago could you hurry up?". You could have heard a pin drop in that bakery. He continued to rock back and forth and his mom told him to hurry up. I don't care if this bakery was the best thing on Earth, which is certainly is NOT, no one treats a person like that. My eyes filled up with tears, after I made sure he got his cupcakes, I left. I will never step foot in this bakery again. They need a complete quality overhaul, including staff and product. .....I'm glad that guy got his cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies. I LOVED the pecan rolls at Panera, and when they stopped making them, I went into a deep depression. I went to SO many bakeries in search of a comparable pecan roll and I found it! I'd love to give this place a better reviews but honestly 3 stars is generous. The baked goods are pretty good. I usually stop here to get a dozen donuts on my way to work. The pretzel shaped donuts are my favorite. Price for a dozen is cheaper than Dunkin' Donuts. I've also gotten several of the cookies. Thumbprints are amazing. The rest I had were just ok. Lady locks are good. Once we got a birthday cake here and it was just awful. I don't think cakes are their strength. It was dry and poorly decorated. Overall everything is dated! You can tell they are stuck in their ways and will never change. Being old school is not always a bad thing but in this case it is. The WORST thing about this place is the customer service!!! Sometimes I don't want to stop just because of the rude people who work here. They don't listen well and rudely question every request you make. I've never met a bunch of nastier people in my life! And the the only friendly people I've encountered here were dumb as rocks. The one boy didn't understand that I wanted a dozen thumbprints with the pink icing no chocolate. Said this 3 times because he kept picking up the wrong ones. He proceeded to give me a box of cookies that half had chocolate icing smh. I was too nice to explain it a 4th time. One last thing....CLEANLINESS! The most annoying thing they do here is touch your baked good with the same gloves they are using to handle money! Nasty! This was my first visit to Paddy Cake. I had to pick up a little something for this diabetes support group I belong two. Yes, I am aware of the irony folks. Just remember this, diabetics can have cakes and sweets in moderation! And my little group has evolved into an excuse to get together and play cards or board games! I live behind the Paddy Cake bakery. Despite the inevitable disruption of back porch dinners (by a very loud garbage truck that comes around 9pm every night) I love the Paddy Cake bakery. It's probably, though, more accurate to say that I love sharing an alley with the Paddy Cake bakery. The people watching is amazing. The company of those people is even better. All the staff, Melvin, Kenny, Reggie, and the others are super friendly and generous with their baked goods. All in all, an indispensable Bloomfield business. read more

I arrived just after 5 pm (they close at 6 pm) and they still had a selection of cookies, cupcakes, danishes, and other goodies. After finally going to PCB after talking about it for 6 months, I can say that I am glad that I finally came, because it was excellent. The apple fritter is my usual get and it knocked my socks off. I ended up picking two chocolate patties with peanut butter filling ($4/both). I wasn't two impressed: the cake seemed a bit stale and the filling was not creamy. Paddy cake bakery is a step up from the typical grocery store bakery but not by far. While many of the pastries are "good" I haven't had anything from this bakery that really called me back for more. One might say there is a "richness" lacking in ingredients. Many of the pastries are average price 75 cents to $1.50 for individual pastries with some items on sale for a $1 and I suspect these sale items might be a cheap, risk free way for you to acquaint yourself with this bake shop. I've visited Paddy Cake on 3 occasions. Once had small cookies with chocolate icing centers (can't remember the name), once a creme filled Pizzelle ( icing too sweet and not rich enough for me), and once a cupcake that tasted just like the very cheap ones you might find in the grocery. To be sure this place is a bit of a Bloomfield icon, and you might enjoy the bake shop charm is has to offer. It is to be noted that this location is not for sitting and eating or loitering. Just some average old school neighborhood bakery. Would give 4-5 stars for their neighborhood staple status though. Their pastries are just not my type. Too sweet. Not the best texture - not bad though. Better than supermarket or dunkin. But I can imagine someone who grew up on these sorts of sweets be into them. Bc, honestly as much as I love French or Japanese bakery's subtle sweetness with light textures, these arent bad for american bakeries' quality. I.e the doughnut's dough itself was soft and palatable - just the filling and frosting is cheap sugar mess. I go in here all the time and have an issue almost all the time. If you are getting a dozen or more cookies, expect your cookies to be shoved in the smallest box possible and then crumble soon after. This place usually averages 2 broken cookies per dozen. And they've shrunk the size of their cookies over the years, but of course didn't shrink the price or tell you about the size shrinking. The donut situation isn't much better. If you aren't there by 9, you can forget getting any of the better donuts. They make no more than 4-6 of various donuts, and when they are gone, they are gone. How does a bakery have no donuts? It sad but you really have to plan ahead when buying donuts there, because there's no guarantee they will actually have the donut you want the next day. And the screw-ups here are legendary. Almost anytime I want vanilla, I end up getting chocolate. 3 straight visits now I've thrown away donuts because they give me the wrong ones. Their food is great, but 1) being able to get what you want and 2) getting it without it being smashed is usually a challenge. read more

I pass by Paddy Cake a lot these days since I tend to travel through the area they're in, so I've been able to stop in more and more and build an opinion of the bakery and its goods alike. Based on my experiences from when I've stopped in, I'd have to say that Paddy Cake is an a-ok place. The baked goods I've purchased here have tasted just fine - they haven't always been particularly unique (I've admittedly been spoiled by the range of goodies available at other bakeries as of late), but I've got nothing against a well made basic treat. Most recently I left with a pre-made box of cupcakes and I found them to be moist and topped with the right amount of icing; the icing wasn't overwhelming in flavor, either, which was a plus in my book. While waiting in line during my most recent visit I also saw a range of cookies and some bread just waiting to be eaten, and a number of boxes waiting to be picked up as well. Considering the sugar craving I had at that point, everything was mouth watering - I would've tried it all if I could have. That said, while this place is just fine for what it is, it's just not as extravagant as some of the other bakeries that we've been spoiled by as of late. I admit that I haven't been super impressed by the availability of baked goods here during my last few stops, either; maybe it's just me, but during my visits there haven't been a ton of goods ready to go in the store. All I've ever really seen are variety of cookies, a couple danishes, some bread, and a lot of empty shelves. Basically, while goodies I've picked up have tasted pretty good and I've been impressed by the special order cakes I've seen other people pick up, the immediate availability of goods has been generally lacking. Not necessarily bad, but again, when you're spoiled by the availability of treats at other bakeries it can be a little disappointing to stop in at a smaller one and to have to choose from a smaller selection. All in all, this place is a pretty solid "a-ok" in my book - not always extraordinary but they're good at what they do. I concur with another review who said that this place is worth stopping in at occasionally but not worth going out of your way for. After a tasty breakfast a few doors down at Rocky's, I decided to wander over to Paddy Cake Bakery and take advantage of the coupon from this year's Enjoy book good for 50% off a dozen donuts. I'd read that the donuts are good, in particular the glazed (thanks to Amy R.). I got half glazed (they really are amazing) and told the girl behind the counter to surprise me with a mix. Unfortunately I think she decided to give me the less popular choices. But still, a nice variety. I also got a napoleon which was delectable. Prices were reasonable. My dozen donuts cost $4 with my coupon so I really can't complain about the price. I would like to give 3.5 stars but I can't justify giving 4. These were the most stale cupcakes I've ever encountered. I wanted to get cupcakes from Sams Club because at least I know they'll be good. However locals insisted this place had "the best" desserts . Just from the outside , I was displeased. I'm from California and don't know any places around. My cupcakes were poorly "spray painted " , stale , and I still had a dozen left over out of 24 because they were so bad . It was embarrassing to have bad cupcakes at my gender reveal party . I'm not that picky when it comes to baked goods. Put enough sugar in it and it'll pass in my book...with one exception. Frosting. Very few can beat Giant Eagle's buttercream (truth) but if you don't even come close, there's a problem. And PC's doesn't come close, unfortunately. The good news is, their donuts are GOOD. The bakery might have taken into account the previous reviews here on Yelp, because I had no issue with the speed of service and attentiveness of the ladies working there. I had questions regarding just what 5-6 of the cakes were (since nothing was labeled), and the lady very patiently explained them to me! I bought a tiramisu slice and burnt almond torte that came to a total of $5.48. I have a major sweet tooth (seriously, I survive on sweets for lunch most days, and only eat properly for dinner) and felt like a kid in a candy shop - or bakery, I suppose - when looking While nothing seemed particularly "novel," there was quite a large variety of items, and one of the more interesting ones was a spherical "apple dumpling," which apparently had a baked apple inside. There were also cannoli, eclairs, baklava, cheesecake, carrot cake, parfaits, and creme pies, to name a few more that I can remember. The other side of the store had cookies, but I had less interest in those so I don't recall anything else except the additional presence of chocolate gobs and thumbprints. Donuts in the case next to them looked to be 3/4 gone, as only the top rack were left (it was around 2 PM). Maybe I was just particularly hungry that day, but the items I bought were some of the most fresh and creamy cakes I've had, with just the right flavor to satisfy me without being too overpowering. The burnt almond torte had a layer of custard cream filling in it, which I was pleasantly surprised by. The almonds covering it had just the right amount of crunch to them, and the cream was soft and somewhat dense. I can't recall much about the cake part since the other elements took the spotlight, but I don't think it was particularly airy, though it was very good as well. The tiramisu was so flavorful! At that point I was about 50-55% full though, and that's when I stop tasting food quite as carefully, so I don't quite remember details regarding individual components other than the fact that the most bottom coffee layer, under the ladyfingers, had just the right amount of moisture and that the texture and taste of every part of the cake came together very well. Horrible experience. Dishonest bakery. They double charged me for my parents anniversary cake and refused to refund the over charge. I paid the balance of the Cake by phone with my credit card, my brother went to pick the cake up 2 hours later d they stated there was a balance on the cake. Not wanting to argue, he paid the $40 cash for the cake. I called an hour later and they said the manager would need to refund me. I've been trying to get refunded for over a week and they refused even after I gave them the receipt from my credit card. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business B. These guys are my neighborhood bakery. I've been by a handful of times in the past for the occasional pastry, and while it was never anything special, they were pastries and they were local. After my most recent experience, however, I will never be coming back. Suzie, the apparent manager, clearly cares very little about customer satisfaction, preferring to blame the customer for major screw-ups. Suzie completely messed up my specialty cake order -- a simple image printed on a sheet cake. Instead of the 10" tall by 6.25" wide image, they appear to have taken the tiny thumbnail image and stretched it out of proportion (rather than downloading the full, high resolution attachment), so that it was 3" tall and as wide as the full length of the cake, 10 or 12," resulting in a squished "face cake" that barely resembled a face. When I pointed out the issue (though it was plain enough to see), she was quick to throw the blame at me. She said they thought this was what I wanted, that this was the image they received -- she said it was tiny, and they had to stretch it. Despite the fact that I had even listed the dimensions of the attached image on my order, she insisted that she was sure this was what I was asking for. Rather than accept that they may have messed up the order, she even had someone go to the back and print out a second copy of the stretched image on a piece of paper, to "prove" this was what I sent, though in the same breath, she said her email was down so she couldn't access it to show me on the computer what she actually received in the email order. Finally she asked me what I wanted done. As I had prepaid for the cake on good faith, I asked for a refund of at least the cost of the image (an extra $12). She refused, and again tried to place the blame on me. Finally, after a great deal of back and forth, my partner came into the store to see what was wrong, and at that point she suddenly switched her response -- suddenly appeared to be sympathetic, said she would look into it to see what went went wrong, would speak to the "general manager," and then call me back by Tuesday at the latest. She claimed she wasn't authorized to make any kind of refund herself, despite the fact that she had sure been arguing as if she were. Presumably this was just to get me out of the store. And sure enough, cue Tuesday -- no call. On Wednesday, I called back and spoke to Suzie again. At first she acted like she had no clue what I was talking about, which makes me wonder -- do they really have so many screwed up cakes that she can't tell one from another? Finally she seemed to remember, and said she would look into it and call me back. Obviously she hadn't taken another glance at the issue in the several days preceding, nor spoken to any "general manager." She called me back a little while later and this time said she reviewed the case and she decided that she would refund me the $12 just for the image. At this point, I honestly believe a business that cared about its customers would have offered to refund the entire cake. When I pointed this out, she again claimed she wasn't authorized to give refunds without speaking to the owner himself -- moments after telling me she herself decided to refund me the cost of the image. And then she *again* threw the issue back in my face, saying that it actually WASN'T the bakery's fault that my order was screwed up. While I grant that I may have become less than polite, it was an unpleasant experience from the very beginning. She clearly should have at least offered to refund the cost of the image from the very beginning. Failing that, she should have refunded the cake when she reexamined the original order which plainly demonstrated they messed it up. The bakery and Suzie in particular treated me like I was lying about the image being messed up when anyone with eyes could see that it barely resembled a face or the dimensions I provided. Suzie was incredibly rude and unwilling to provide any sort of resolution until days later. She failed to follow-up when she promised. Being right was apparently more important to her than treating her customers with respect or ensuring that they are even remotely satisfied with the bakery's product. My family has ordered from this bakery for OVER 20 YEARS- POSSIBLY 30?! Well, in the past 9 years or so, I have seen their quality rapidly go further and further downhill. Worse and worse quality to the product, declining taste and poorer ingredients are plainly evident. Sloppier and sloppier decorating, ruder and ruder counter staff. We have continued to shop there simply due to the location being convenient, but these days you are really TAKING YOUR CHANCES as to whether the items you buy from them will be somewhat tasty or TOTALLY INEDIBLE. Still, I try to support neighborhood businesses as much as possible so it does break my heart to trash them in a review like this, but these things need to be said. They continue to have a lot of customers due to their location and due to people remembering how good they USED TO BE, so when folks are back visiting their old neighborhood, they return to this bakery for the memories. But oh, how the standards have fallen! We got some cupcakes for a party last year in November that we literally could not eat, they were so dry and bad- they went in the trash (not cheap either). Thank goodness it was just a small kiddie birthday get-together and not an important occasion with guests I would have been embarrassed in front of. We considered getting our wedding cake from them (again, in order to support a neighborhood place) in 2008 but they gave us such a hard time regarding even getting an appointment for a cake consultation that we went with another baker, out in the west end. Looking back, I am glad it happened that way. As for daily items, their breads are usually decent and their donuts are edible (not great, just satisfactory) but have way too much sickly-sweet frosting. Cookies are usually fine but sometimes their cake decorating is clearly being done as such a rush job that it's sloppy beyond description. Danishes and many other items give the impression that something went sort of wrong with the recipe, items are heavy and greasy when they should be fluffy or flaky or soft and moist. Items seem overcooked or undercooked. I wonder if they ever really taste test what they are producing. Also I don't know how they get away with serving such pathetic cannolis in an Italian neighborhood- pastry cream and zero ricotta, plus just in general- funky ingredients that are blantantly, obviously pre-fab, no fillings seem freshly made, it's all out of some mass-produced tube. And for this low quality, they make you pay premium prices, OF COURSE! Nothing is marked with price or name of the item, and when you ask, most of the counter staff consistently take a disgusted tone with you and treat you like you are stupid, rolling their eyes at you (the only exception being the youngest girls that work there, in their early 20s, who are consistently very good at being polite when helping customers). The more mature ladies frequently say snarky things to me like: "That's not a cinnamon SPIN, that's a cinnamon DONUT. That's not a DANISH, that's a FRUIT PASTRY." If you don't want to have to answer questions, then put up labels and tags with the names and prices and info, so customers can read what terms you are expecting us to use! Most recently, I picked up a birthday cake for my father's birthday, and it looked like a child decorated it. Seriously. I could have done a better job myself. Maybe they are employing the cheapest bakers and decorators rather than the more talented ones. If this is the case, it certainly shows. I think I am DONE with continuing to try to support this "neighborhood landmark." We stopped in this morning at Paddy Cake Bakery to sample some donuts/treats/whatever caught our fancy. It wasn't the nicest place on the inside, and the ordering process seemed kind of chaotic. It looked like they did have a "take a number" kind of system, but weren't using it when we were there. I ended up getting a cinnamon roll and a cake donut, as I couldn't decide and we were heading to the gym anyway, so I didn't feel guilty. Wife got a chocolate frosted longhorn style donut that was covered in sprinkles. I feel like a good measure of a place that claims to have amazing donuts is their plain cake donut. If you can do this properly, then good things are to come when you order other things. This was probably the worst plain cake donut I've ever had. It was dry, not at all crispy, and had no flavor. I couldn't even finish it. And I love pastry. I would have rather had a cake donut from Giant Eagle or Dunkin Donuts, and that's a sad statement. Those are honestly better. The cinnamon roll was just ok, until I bit into the center, where the dough was almost raw. I understand not wanting to over cook your cinnamon rolls, but this was not a fun surprise. I sampled my wife's donut as I wanted to be able to comment on it, and I found the chocolate icing to be artificial tasting. This is the first time I've eaten donuts and thrown pieces of everything away. This place was...well, edible. I didn't find it to be anything special. We didn't sample the cookies or cakes, but if the donuts are any indication, I don't want to try them. read more
