Every bite of the food was savory and delicious and the service was above and beyond from start to finish. They are able to accommodate many dietary needs and also helped us with setup and cleanup, even with plating and serving the cake we had ordered separately. The Paella Project... basically, it is a travelling band of paella cooks that cater to various events and functions with frequent visits to Atwater Village and Silverlake. I guess the best way to explain them is to imagine a food truck without the truck or a Top Chef challenge where onsite facilities must be used to cook food and voilà, you have the Paella Project. And speaking of Top Chef where challenges can be automatically lost based on time deadlines, the Paella Project didn't do it for the wife and I because they failed to meet their deadline when we visited them at 55 Degree Wine on April 10, 2012. You see, the paella was late by over 40 fucking minutes! Prior to the April 10th event, I spoke to the owner of the Paella Project and found out that tapas-style appetizers would be served between 6 and 7:30 and the paella would be ready by 7:30. Moreover, since the paella had sold out in previous events, I was told to come early. Therefore, trying to time for the paella, we showed up at around 6:40 knowing that the paella would be served about an hour later. So to pass the time we decided to order some drinks from 55 Degree Wine. I ordered a beer flight and my wife decided to go with a wine flight. While drinking we also ordered some tapas dishes offered by the Paella Project. We ordered a truffle tortilla de patatas with aji amarillo and we ordered chicken chicharrones with smoked pimenton and aleppo pepper. The truffle tortilla de patatas looked like a slice of pie. But when we dove into it, we realized that it was quite complex because it was layered with potato slices and other delicious ingredients that I could barely make out in the dark cellar of 55 Degree Wine. As for the chicken chicharrones, this cold dish reminded me of flaming hot cheetos. It really was the perfect snack to go with my beers. While the tapas dishes were good and came out immediately, the paella took forever. In fact, in addition to our respective beer and wine flights, I ordered another beer and the wife ordered another glass of wine. Then we finished our drinks and ended up ordering a bottle of wine. Yet, still we waited for the paella. As I mentioned earlier, the paella was supposed to be served at 7:30. However, it was not until well after 8:15 that we finally got to try their paella rustica. Perhaps it was a combination of putting the paella on too high a pedestal or perhaps it was because by the time I took a bite of the paella, I was buzzed and had a sore neck from the countless times of looking over my shoulder to see if the fucking paella was ready... regardless, the paella just didn't taste that great. Definitely 2 Stars since, "meh, I've experienced better." I guess you could say that when I finally got to taste the damn paella, I felt angry, sad, and confused, all at once. Angry that the paella took so long; Sad that it didn't taste that great; Confused because I was angry, sad, and insanely buzzed (mixing beer and wine is not a good idea, everrrr!). So at the end of the day, I felt let down and disappointed by the Paella Project. Not to mention, I had a fucking migraine. -------------------------- * Call me an old fucking fart, but I need my dinner before 8:15. ** Hungry and annoyed wife is not a sight to see. I was going to give it 3 stars as I didn't feel like the paella was as good as other paellas I've had, but perhaps it was because I couldn't eat the garlic aioli (which I opted out of) and there was not as much of a variety of seafood (only shrimp and mussels). Plus, there was soo much rice. I did like the well marinated chicken. However, the price was decent for what you get. I give the project 4 stars because the ambiance of 55 Wine was perfect for paella (intimate and fun with friends) and even though I'm not even much of a wine sipper, I loved the moscato there. read more

Had the pleasure of meeting Adrianna, The Paella Goddess of Cuban descent, as she was cooking 2 types of Paella for our friend Ed's 60th birthday party. She did one that was a jet-black seafood Paella with a huge quantity of shrimp, squid, mussels and squid ink- Absolutely delicious- Highly recommend you let her do this one if you hire then to work their magic (if you like seafood). The other Paella was also delicious, albeit a tad salty for my taste- consisted of Large quantities of skinless chicken thighs, and marinated Spanish Chorizo- I think she does a great job and would recommend The Paella project for any catering situation where an authentic Paella is desired. Wow. Just wow. My friend's wedding catered the Paella Project and I love her (even more) for it. This has got to be the best wedding food I've ever had in the history of weddings I've attended. Two ginormous pans (seafood and chicken/chorizo) of savory, delicious, paella simmering to perfection right before our very eyes. I went to an event catered by Paella Project last night in Redondo Beach. It was hands down the best paella I've every tasted!!!!! And I've tasted a lot of paella! I would highly recommend having them cater events. It's very different than the usual boring catering and very interesting to watch the dish being prepared. We settled on a variety of incredible tasting appetizers that could be enjoyed all of our friends, from vegans to carnivores! this may be the best paella i've ever had. i first encountered the paella project during the recent yelp passport to atwater village event at 55 degree wine, and i was so enamored with their paella rustica (featuring tender chicken and sausage) that when i heard they'd be back a few weeks later with 2 more kinds of paella (seafood and vegan, in addition to the rustica), i immediately marked it on my calendar. i returned with some coworkers in tow, and we sipped on wine downstairs while waiting for the paella to cook in giant paella pans outside on the sidewalk. when the paella was ready, they brought it down and set up shop in the back room. this time i tried the seafood paella and it was just as amazing as the rustica (although it requires a little more involvement to eat due to the mussels and shrimp being in-shell). my coworkers all agreed the paella was excellent. it was flavorful without being overly salty, and all the ingredients were cooked to perfection. i'll be stalking, i mean following them on their facebook and twitter to see where they pop up next! p.s. i am in love with the tangy creamy aioli they drizzle over their paella. it adds the perfect amount of zing! read more

Cliff's notes: Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. We used Paella Project for our wedding, and they were awesome from planning to wedding day. To taste the food and start things off, Adriana came to our house and served us samples from her creative and delicious menu. She texted us 15 minutes before she arrived only to preheat the oven to 400ºF, and then just sit back and relax. We popped a bottle of our favorite tempranillo and enjoyed her creations as she served each dish on a unique platter. For our wedding day, her staff was incredibly nice and very turn-key. The food (although we didn't get to each much of sadly) was amazing, and all of our guests were ecstatic about the uniqueness of the food and its flavor. For my daughter's engagement party I was looking for a caterer that could cook a paella I was so happy to find Paella Project. The head chef is incredible. She made two paellas for the guests that don't eat seafood and the ones that prefer chicken and seafood. Both paellas were delicious. It reminded me of my trips to Spain, specially Valencia. I didn't even know that Paella tasted so good until I had the Paellas from the Paella Project. I've tried Paellas from different restaurants here and there, but I wasn't a fan. BUTTTTTT, when I smelled the Seafood Paella and the Paella Rustica freshly cooking in front of 55 Degree Wine (they do pop-ups there), I knew this experience was going to be completely different! First off, the Seafood Paella - it has mussels, shrimp, vegetables, and chicken. This was sooooo flavorful with juicy tender mussels. I couldn't stop eating! The chicken was also very tender, flavorful, and juicy. My friend and I just kept saying Wow Wow Wow all through out the meal. AAAANNNND they make their own Garlic Aioli which you can add to the Paellas! OMGEEEEEEE~~~ Secondly, the Paella Rustica- it had chicken, veges, and sausage. I initially thought I was going to like the seafood better, but I have to say, they both taste different, but I like them both equally! The chicken was sooo juicy and tender also. I was impressed! All I can say is, FLAVOR FLAVOR FLAVOR! At the pop up they do at 55 Degree Wine at Atwater, they also offered tapas while the Paella is cooking. The Tapas are also AMAZING! Chef Adriana Morera has an amazing Catering Company, The Paellaproject.com August 16, 2014 , my bride and I had the honor of enjoying the showmanship, creativity, love of tradition in the Art of Paella. We chose Hedda Hopper's 1920's Spanish Villa in La Habra Heights for our Wedding and reception. Chef Morera was very hospitable during our planning stages. The Chef consulted with us to make sure all details were planned for a successful Wedding. Chef Adriana Morera arrived at the Villa with serving staff and her Sous Chef to create a Traditional Trifecta of Paella selections. Our ceremony was at 5 pm, our guests arrived at 4 pm. The preparation began at 3:00 of the Paella. The presentation with three Paella Pans and beautiful rugs underlining the outdoor kitchen created was the beginning. I've been to Spain for a good paella. I've enjoyed what the Basques in Southern France have done with it. La Paella on San Vicente Blvd. can whip up a very good classical paella, too... But in my book, the "Paella Project" has set the bar both in the preparation and presentation of paella. After inhaling tonight's "Paella Rustica" at the Project's pop-up tasting in Atwater Village, it's clear that its paella stands alone in both quality and creativity. It was so good I could plotz. The juicy pieces of roasted pork, string beans and blend of spices really shined through. The lightly textured bed of rice was so silky and aromatic, it was like sex for the mouth. It appears that most (if not all) of the previous posts are about the paella dish that they make - well, guess what?! The Paella Project has branched out into appetizers too!!! And AAAHHHMAZING appetizers they are!!! We were introduced to Adriana and the Paella Project by a friend of ours who hired her to cater their wine tasting party and I am so happy about this introduction - we hired her to cater my 50th Bday party and we cannot wait to hire her again! Right from the beginning, she was responsive, particularly via email and professional - easy to work with. She showed up right on time, breezed in and set-up shop effortlessly in a kitchen she had never worked in before. Both, Adriana and Kevin (her assistant for the evening) were professional, polite, courteous and extremely helpful - even offering to pour the wine that we had selected for our party. The appetizers were perfectly timed and presented - the whole even flowed without a hitch. From a list of about 20+ options, we selected the mushroom tarts, ceviche on red tortilla rounds topped with an avocado creme, steak with carmelized onions on crostini's, chicken skewers with a sweet chili sauce and braised beef empanadas w/a green chile sauce and my favorite a Roquefort stuffed date wrapped in Serrano ham!!! And for dessert, from a list of about 7 options, we chose the dulce de leche cheesecake bites - heavenly!!! She also makes a mini, very light lemon poppy seed bundt cake! So as usual, the short version: Adriana Morera preps ingredients for 2 hours in giant pan and brings it down to the basement of 55 Degrees where you feast with good people and good wine / beer. This. Is. A. Win. **Cash only, and park on Glenhurst or GlenFeliz and walk across the street. Follow the amazing aroma of paella. ** Now, I actually have a story to tell about this amazing woman and her even more amazing paella. I have a small music studio across the street in Atwater and was doing my usual 5pm caffeine run to the Starbucks and I turn the corner and had to walk backwards from the door to Starbucks because my nose could not ignore the familiar aroma of Paella. They were just beginning to load up the pans but the scent was unmistakable, saffron, mussels, peppers, onions. They were halfway impressed when I called out "Hey are you prepping paella?" and once confirmed, I simply said "I will be back". Well apparently lots of people were curious (SB does get a lot of foot traffic as does Glendale Blvd) and said the same exact words. I was the only one smart enough to return according to the chef and her family. Speaking of her family, well they all show up to support and have a wonderful meal. They are part of the "good people" equation that I brought up earlier. And who really doesn't love some wonderful Spanish folks smiling and laughing amongst some paella right? Now, to the dishes themselves. She serves 3 Paellas usually, the seafood variety, a rustica which is kind of the meat lovers version, and even a vegan paella for those of you must go in that direction. I've had all three (well only a few bites of the vegan but I can confirm that the lone vegan person was mega stoked on just having the option along with claiming that it was delicious. so there you go). The seafood paella is probably my favorite as it's what I"m normally used to when I think paella. Mussels shrimp and clams and you even get a bit of chicken hidden in there. The paella itself with the rice isn't too dry but not so moist to the point of a risotto, it's just right. The extra sauce they give you (aioli i think) adds a bit of extra pizzaz to the flavor explosion that will happen in your mouth and just makes everything perfect. The rustico has chorizo and pork sausage along with chicken so it's naturally a bit on the salty side so if you prefer a more gentle flavor go with the seafood (though it will cost a couple bucks extra.) If you're always throwing a tiny bit of salt on everything, well duh, rustica it is. Finally, they do offer desserts that rotate and I've had a chocolate cake (tasty but I'm not much of a chocolate cake dude) and just this last time had some kind of fig ice cream concoction. Mind you I am less of a fig person than chocolate but I had a group with me and we said we'd share one. And guess what? That shit blew my mind pardon my freaking french. We have a word for that in japanese "otnano aji" and "shareteru' which is basically "a mature taste" and "classy" and that's exactly what this dessert was. I'd honestly come just for that If i knew that was on the course it was that good. Combine all this with the underground wine bar / cellar of 55 Degrees and you truly have a fun evening out where I am positive you will find some cool people (i.e. me) and enjoy a dish that is rather hard to find even amongst all the restaurants in Los Angeles. I ordered paella from Adrianna a few years ago. I didn't hire her team to cook on-site; she delivered the food and appetizers instead. The paella was good, my guests did say they enjoyed the food. However, I tried to contact her a few times afterwards for other catering events but she either takes more than 5-7 days to respond (to say she is not available) or does not respond at all. I referred her to colleagues, who told me that she did not respond at all to email or voice messages. We have since found other paella caterers for our events. read more

I was lucky to get introduced to this wonderful traveling paella cook off by a friend of mine who, among others, happened to join me last night at 55 Degree Wine Store and Cellar. The only thing I am going to say about the store is that it was great, but there's a separate review coming for it. For the sake of this review, let us concentrate on the Paella. Unlike most of my other reviews, I will make this one pretty short. The experience was great! The aromas, flavors and authenticity of the dish was quite good. I should mention that I have never been to Spain, but have tasted quite a few different Paella dishes made by quite a few different great chefs. Last night I happened to have ordered my favorite seafood version of the dish served along with, of course, chicken. All the proteins were cooked quite well. Especially considering the style in which it was served. The mussels were well steamed and quite supple and the shrimp were on the border of rubbery, but not yet! That, that made them delicious! Topped with the best garlic aioli I have ever had, the dish was a total winner! The only reason for the 4 starts instead of five is the overcooked rice. I am sorry chef, Adriana Morera, but unfortunately, in my portion of the dish the rice was almost complete mush. Delicous! ...but overcooked. The food was delicious, most of the waiters were amazing and offered their assistance, which I, Jessica and Adam's wedding coordinator, was grateful for. Adrianna came and worked her tail off in 94 degree heat and produced the most amazing, delicious, and visually stunning Paella ever! The rice is never raw nor over cooked--always perfect, and the rest of the ingredients are cooked together perfectly as well. I always enjoy hiring The Paella Project for my parties because it is easy, fun, and a surprise to the guests. All my guests always love the paella & are excited about the flavor it brings. The head chef is a pleasure because she is always glad to serve you and is always helpful. The Paella Project catered our wedding this past weekend in San Pedro and we just can't say enough about out fabulous they were. From the beginning we were in contact with Adriana, who helped us decide on which paellas to order inside our small budget. She also worked with us to create a vegan paella option since we had many veggie guests attending. We stayed in contact up until the day of our event, which was stress-relieving. Adriana informed us that her chef, Kathy, would be our chef for the day, and that she would have an assistant to help out with anything they or we needed on the day. When we arrived at the site after getting ready, we saw the Paella Project setting up and it already smelled delicious. Then after the ceremony was over, the guests poured into the drink area where the Paella Project was set-up and cooking, and everyone's appetites grew stronger, even with the small appetizers they were munching on while staring at the paella. I highly recommend the Paella Project and would use them again in an instant if I ever host another event like this. Thanks Adriana, Kathy Kevin for giving us excellent service from the moment we contacted you to the end of dinner when you came to shake our hands before heading out. By the way, the gratuity was already included in the price, which was convenient, but my fiance and I decided that it didn't fully express our gratitude - so we threw extra tip in to show them how happy we were with everything. Adriana and crew were so amazing and professional. They made my husbands 40th birthday celebration truly special. All the guests kept commenting on how delicious the food was... from the yummy selection of appetizers to scrumptious dessert-- every thing was spot on. It was so much fun watching the paella evolve over a couple of hours starting with twigs and a simple broth into the most delicious fire roasted rich concoction. Paella Project catered my wedding this past October. We met Chef Adriana at the tasting and fell in love with her food and with her! She presented an amazing selection of appetizers wich made it hard to narrow down to a few. We had a blast at the tasting getting to know her a little and enjoying all of the yummy and beautifully presented bites. At the wedding she delivered the same quality of food and the service from her and her staff were as warm and personal as in the intimate tasting session. All of our guests were blown away by the appetizers and fully enjoyed the delicious paellas (seafood and vegan). Everyone keeps raving about the food at our wedding to this day. We've heard everything from "it is the best food I have ever had in a wedding" to "I wish we had her cater our wedding". My husband and I had a clear vision of what we wanted food wise and she totally hit the mark! As a fellow chef, food was the absolute most important element to my wedding and I could have not chosen anyone better than Paella Project!
