Everyone is really friendly [manager, hostess, server, etc.]. Our waitress in particular was really sweet and informative. Atmosphere/decor: Lol, they played the strangest variety of music -- hip hop (think Destiny's Child - Jumpin' jumpin') to songs I've never even heard of... Not necessarily a "bad" thing... The artwork on the walls were nice, and the restaurant is really clean. They also have a small bar area with TVs. Price: cheap, which is especially good for broke college students. Our hardy Earthwatch Group had our "Goodbye and Thank You for a Job Well Done" Dinner here the other night. With a 5:45 PM reservation time and a Monday Night, snagging a Table for 11 was relatively easy. There was also a good 15 minutes to go before Happy Hour was over and the cheap eats and drinks were most welcome. The only distraction was Game 7 of the NLCS between the Giants and Cardinals on the Big Screen, which made it hard for me to have a decent conversation while frequently staring at the screen. Service was immediate, friendly, and informative. That "Set the Table" well for a comfortable and friendly evening among friends. Dinner was also very good and solid as comfort food goes. I had a calamari pasta dish (with toasted bread) that was plentiful and delicious, although it was garlicky enough to keep Vampires away. The rest of our Group seemed to be enjoying their selections as well. And the prices were certainly an excellent value for the money. If I lived or visited Davis more often, Paesanos would merit a return visit and maybe even a pleasant Date Night with Gayle. read more

My friends and I were lucky enough to get a reservation for 8 for a birthday dinner. It was very covid safe. There were plastic curtains up dividing each table and they were adequately distanced apart from one another. The food was very delicious. The bread seemed fresh and the pasta was creamy and flavorful. I ordered the carbonara and it was loaded with bacon. It did have a lot of garlic in it but it was still good nonetheless. read more

Finally decided to do a review for Paeasanos after dining here twice in the last month. As Paeasano's #2 is located in the Downtown Davis parking can be a pain if you're coming from out of town. But even if you park a bit away, Downtown Davis is small enough and it won't be more than a 5 minute walk to Paesanos. When you walk in, there is a small waiting area with the host and they also have some outside seating for warmer days. The interior is very modern but probably smaller in size than the big daddy Sacramento location. Being in Davis, the benefit is that both times we came, they were not as busy as the Midtown parent would be around that hour and we did not have to wait for the table. The food menu consists of mostly pastas and pizzas with a decent appetizer selection and several mostly local beers on tap. Beers are $1 off during happy hour=$4 for a Track 7 Panic IPA pretty good deal. For appetizers we did bocce balls and polenta fries. Both very good, but polenta is almost a must at Paesanos so we might just go with that from now on. Service was good at one occasion and only okay on the other. It would be great if all the servers would pay equal attention to their tables, not just specific customers based on their age. I guess it is assumed that older gentlemen tip better or something, but it still doesn't justify checking with that table every 3 minutes while we have to ask for the refills or napkins. But enough with the rant, on to the food... For main dish, I had pork fusili and baked pasta on respective visits. Pork fusilli was perfect: marinated pulled pork and just the right amount of heat from the habanero pesto. I tried this dish at the huge Yelp event in Midtown and I was impressed back then. Glad to report that it is equally delicious at the Davis location. On the other hand, baked pasta was Okay but I don't think I would order it again. A bit too much cream sauce and not enough crispiness or bigger flavors on the penne. Overall, though Paesanos is one of the many Midtown transplants that exist in Downtown Davis it is still one of the better options for a nice(r) meal in town. Great place to go to for a fancy dinner. Never heard of it before but came here on a Sunday night for a friend's birthday. Vibe and atmosphere reminded me of a mixture of BJ's Brewery and Buca. Fancy but still casual if that makes any sense lol. Server was attentive and sweet. She made sure our water was always refilled and asked us periodically if we needed anything. I ordered a spicy creole which was a tomato based sauce with linguine that had shrimp and chicken mixed in served alongside a garlic butter bread. Portion was decent but got really full halfway through my dish because at each table comes with complimentary bread. To kill time I was just munching on it and they give you free refills when you're out. Got full off of that! Pasta was delicious, and the spiciness was at a good level. This is a really great place if you're craving pasta. I've tried a few different ones on the menu and they were all good. The one that I enjoy the most and get most often is the Fettuccine Arrostini...blackened chicken, bell peppers in a creamy sauce with grilled buttery bread on the side. It has great flavor and the perfect amount of kick/spice. The service is pretty good and the wait time to be seated is almost non existent (I realized this sounded nuts after I typed it so maybe I went during off peak hours). We ordered the chicken potato Rosemary pizza, the baked rigatoni and the bocce ball appetizer. The baked rigatoni was just delicious, great mix of a creamy sauce and meaty bolognese sauce, it was SO yummy! The potato pizza was very unique, it had a lemony sauce and paired great with the rosemary and goat cheese. I think sharing between 2-3 people, it would be perfect, but sharing between four people it might not be enough. I only got 1.5 Polenta fries sharing between the four of us lol. They give you free house bread though and they were also pretty good. So soft (: The pasta here is amazing, the flavors really come together to give you that perfect taste and leave you wanting more! They use bacon pieces in a lot of their pasta dishes so if you like that, you'll enjoy Paesanos pasta. Oh, and I love that they have the option to get whole wheat pasta instead of the regular kind. I have to say though... The whole wheat didn't taste as good as the regular kind... For obvious reasons. The pasta dishes also do not come with meat, if you want chicken, it is another extra $2.75 on top of your $8.95, $9.95, $10.95 pasta dish. Another wonderful addition to the Davis community. Ambiance: I would describe it as "Hollywood glam" with its red walls, warm wooden tables, chandeliers, art work, and many mirrors. When I asked him for a suggestion on the pasta, he described the pasta menu as "least complicated to most complicated". I then chose the one that sounded the most unique. Food: The menu was modern and with a hint of fusion- it consisted of appetizers, salads, pasta, pizza, and baked sandwiches. I liked how there was a complimentary focaccia with balsamic vinegar. They were very generous with the bread! We ordered 2 items to share: crab & artichoke dip and pork fusilli pasta. The portions do not look very big at first glance, however the portion is average and is just right to fill your tummy. Crab & Artichoke ($9.95): This is an appetizer. I love how it comes with a huge, warm, and toasted baguette. The dip was rich and creamy with crab, artichoke, spinach, and cheese. It was a little too cheesy for me, but I definitely think it was a delicious dish! Pork Fusilli Pasta ($9.95): What a pleasant surprise! The pasta came with a big piece of garlic bread! Wow, the pork was marinated with exquisitely- so tender and juicy. The sauce was a habanero cilantro and lime which was so amazing and different. The pasta had a delicious spicy sizzle. It didn't taste like the normal "Italian" pasta, it felt a little Asian from the pork and a little Latin from the spicy sauce. It was different and I loved it. Overall: We had a lot of bread- focaccia, baguette, french bread. The price might be a little high for college students, but affordable. I got the spaghetti and meatballs, and overall it was delicious (although not THE best I've had) but worth getting it especially because I thought the quantity was perfect to fill me up. I also wish we were served our bread sooner, they brought it right before the food and we were there sitting just talking for a while. Definitely worth the visit though! Also I highly recommend the ravioli, that was the best part of the entire meal, which was separated separately as an appetizer. We ordered the polenta fries right away since that seems to be such a hit on Yelp. I will say they were good but not amazing. I liked the sauces that came with it but I just thought they were okay. The fries were pretty bland tasting to me and desperately needed the sauce. Also shared the insalata salad and they drench the salad in dressing. Not appetizing at all but I appreciate their crisp lettuce? I guess. For my main dish I ordered the gemelli spinaci (sp? Idk how to spell it or pronounce it) Simple garlic cream pasta with onions, bacon, spinach, other stuff, and I added chicken since he offered. The chicken was an additional $3. The pasts was really tasty, although the noodles seemed hard which could be because of the type of pasta it was. Overall, my favorite of the night. It was really simple but yummy. How can you go wrong with bacon and garlic? The garlic bread was also cool. Dessert was a fail. The waiter said the brownie would be hot but it was cold and dry and disappointing. Wouldn't recommend. Ok, so this place is pretty good. First off there bread is delicious. It's complimentary and it is served with balsamic vinegar and honestly you can fill up on that alone if you're not too careful. NOTE: the bread is only offered in the evenings, something I had to find out first hand when I went there for lunch the other day. But this place offers a variety of Italian food and some oddities as well. They have sandwiches, pizzas, salads, and the obvious pasta. The pastas are nice. I've had the balsamic pasta and it was great. The carbonara will not disappoint. My personal favorite is the stromboli. Got it on a whim, mainly cause it had tri-tip, and it was great, super filling. It comes with a side salad. Overall it's a great hearty meal. The pizzas are great. They're personal size, but they can fill you up. If people are used to the California Pizza Kitchen personal pizzas, these are a little bigger in size and much more flavorful. I've tried the smokin' hot, and it was covered with sausage. Definitely worth a try. As for the service. I've been here for both lunch and dinner. The lunch service was nothing special, but I'll blame that on how late in the day we went. I think we didn't get there till around 3ish. The cook was obviously not happy about having to serve a large group so late in the afternoon. Pretty sure I could read his lips say "Fxck!" as we came in. But for dinner the service was great. The server was nice and always kept our bread basket filled. On that task alone he deserves some sort of reward. Great place. Affordable, especially compared to Fuzio's (the place that used to be here). Worth a try. Best italian in Davis that I've had. This is probably my first review where the rating is solely based on service. If I could rate Paesano's just on food, they'd get 5 stars from me. But, unfortunately, there have been a couple of incidents that I can't get off of my mind. I've been before and asked to be seated outside, but been told that they were unable to do that at the time. Just a few minutes after, I saw a mom and daughter asked to be seated outside and, without argument, they were seated outside. The same day, I received service that was rude. My glass for Diet Pepsi had a lipstick stain and was gross in general, but the server was rude about getting me a new cup. I also went for a Happy Hour and my card was charged twice - once without tip and once with tip. When I called to rectify the charge, the person on the other end was confused and couldn't figure it out. They told me that they'd call me back soon and that they'd do it. I still haven't heard back after a couple of months. I have stopped pestering them about it, because it's no longer worth my time to be refunded $6.50. But it is frustrating, especially because this has not happened to me anywhere else. Besides all this, the food is fantastic - I always get spaghetti squash with meatballs. It's a classic with a twist, and it's delicious. This place does spaghetti squash right. They also have gluten-free pasta, which I believe has an extra charge (while the spaghetti squash does not). Their cocktails are also good. It's a nicer place for Davis, so it's always busy on weekend evenings, but it can be worth the wait. read more

If I could give a place zero stars, I would. I'm generally open-minded when it comes to restaurants, but if wait staff or hosts completely ignore you, then that's another story. I came here on weekday afternoon, and there were about 3 tables tops. There was virtually no host, so my classmate and I were left starring into a corner until we got some kind of attention to get us seated. We thought, okay, let's overlook it and try to enjoy our meal. But our experience here got exponentially worse. We were yet again, ignored in an almost EMPTY restaurant. How can the servers and hosts just walk by and ignore our table despite numerous glances by the wait staff? Until after 10-15 minutes later, someone asked us if we've been helped yet. We grunted a "no" and then our server arrived. He took our order and it was brought out after 5 minutes. Now, we were both willing to oversaw the two mess-ups if the food was good. Yet again, we were wrong. Also, this place shouldn't even be considered Italian. It should be American. I had the Pollo De Modeno, and by god, I've never finished a plate of pasta wishing every single bite got closer to the end. It was an obligatory finish-to-the-end kind of thing. On top of that, I was starving, and normally the taste of food gets the advantage when one is super hungry. But not even my growling stomach could suppress the bland, overcooked, and "angel-hair" mush with the dryest chicken that tasted like rubber could fool my stomach. My family and I have been eating here for as long as I can remember. We drive all the way from Fairfield to enjoy it. Today our waiter, Tate, came and asked us if we had room for dessert but we hadn't even received our Entrees. Tables that were seated long after us had already eaten their food and were leaving. He walked away puzzled. And said the food would be out in 10 minutes. 10 minutes turned into 30 minutes. And he tells us the Polenta fries are coming out of the oven. I asked for the check. And they bring the Check with all the food on it that they hadn't even served us. And somehow thought we'd wait the rest of the Afternoon for it. I asked him to remove the items that we hadn't received. Which took another 15 minutes waiting for the Manager to remove them. This Manager didn't even bother to come by the table and check on us. Probably a bit too fancy for the average college student, but if you'd like to impress a date... You should judge an Italian restaurant on the quality of their garlic bread. If you don't like the garlic bread, you may not like the entree. My pasta was decent. The food was good but the service is what brought this place down. There were literally two or three couples there beside my boyfriend and me. The guy who sat us took his sweet time to take our orders even when we closed our menu and looked at him. Took him about 10 minutes to get back to us once he gave us water. It was only him and another server who walked around with a really unpleasant face which brought down the environment. She kind of stomped around everywhere. As a customer, especially one who just took her final, I want to enter a happy environment with kind servers. Not including that there weren't many customers to begin with. Back to the guy who waited us, he was in the bar area doing stuff and I guess that explains why he forgot about us. I'm not sure if it's because we look young or not but the servers did not seem to take us seriously when we reached out for them. He didn't care for our table and kept standing at the bar area. In my mind I'm thinking he should clean or do whatever in the bar but give us a waiter who is going to serve us properly. The food took quite a while around 20 minutes and we did not receive the complimentary bread and olive oil with balsamic vinegar. Once our food came out they just left us alone for the most part. I was ok with that because their attitude and lack of customer service was unwanted. We wait an extra 10 minutes to just get our check and our things to go. It was ridiculous. The food is what made this place 3 stars but with my most recent experience I would give it 1 star. They need to train their staff members to be more attentive to their customers whether it is a slow day or busy day. Recently visited Paesanos with friends for my friend's graduation celebration lunch. The environment is pretty solid with some nice decorations. Service is pretty slow. While we were a party of 13, we had to track down our server to order our appetizers and had to wait another 15 minutes before we could get his attention again to order. He was also pretty terse with us and was barely meeting the minimum level of politeness. I ended up ordering the Penne Roma. It was pretty bland and runny, and one of the kalamata olives in my dish had a pit in it. I think it was in the $10 range, but even then was too expensive for what I ordered. The people I was with really made the experience, and the food and service was not ideal. I don't plan on coming back, and for sure wouldn't recommend this place to anyone else. read more

It was our server's first day there, and he was absolutely amazing. He was attentive despite having to wait on several other tables. I think the owner of the place stopped by every table to say hi too. We got bread (delicious!) and a balsamic vinegar dipping sauce as soon as we were seated, loved it. Between me and my friends, we got polenta fries, gnocchi gorgonzola, crab and artichoke gratin for starters, gorgonzola and fuji apple pizza, calamari linguine, fettucini alfredo as our entree, and panna cotta for dessert. We loved every single dish. The polenta fries was just right, not too greasy and just the right amount of seasoning. The dipping sauce that came with it, spicy aioli, wasn't too spicy (thank goodness) and the cocktail sauce had a nice depth to it. Sauce that came with gnocchi was good, and the crab and artichoke gratin is to die for (probably our favorite dish). The gratin came with chunks of crab, onions, artichoke and cheese, pure bliss. Also highly recommend the pizza, fresh ingredient, good amount of topping and you probably can't find this anywhere else in Davis. Liked my calamari linguine (calamari was so good, I would have been happy to have just gotten that without the linguine), and the alfredo was decent (hard to go wrong on this dish). Panna cotta had vanilla bean,a tinge of lemon in it, not too overpowering, with raspberry sauce, raspberries and strawberries on the side. Liked it too and will definitely go back to try their tiramisu (although our server recommended the brownie). I also got their black and white martini, which I liked, and also liked their choice of cocktails overall. I thought the food was pretty cheap too considering the portion of the food. I enjoyed this place very much first of all the service was great, not to mention the waiter had patience to explain with detail the menu and provide suggestions. Had business lunch here and they were very accommodating for the no meat no dairy options. They made a pizza without cheese it was actually pretty good too. I think it was missing a base sauce or something enhance the flavor of the veggies. I'll be back. read more
