Came here on a Friday night and surprisingly, it wasn't that crowded like I thought it would be. There was space to walk around without feeling crammed or claustrophobic; that's the kind of bar I want to go to, lol :D Anyway, I ordered 2 types of bowls (menu said it's for 2-4 people) with my three girlfriends. We got the Mai Thai bowl, which consists of rum, lime, curacao, and orgeat. There was lots of ice, so it tasted like a slushy drink, but with alcohol. Very fruity and a light drink. The second bowl we got was the Scorpion bowl, which had rum, brandy, lemon, orange, and almond. This was also a slushy drink as well. It was a bit stronger and had an alcoholic taste afterwards (yay!). Not exactly sure with the exact time, but there seems to be a mini tiki show that lasted for less than 1 minute every now and then? It's literally just small smoke & loud tiki sound, lol. ALSO, they have a water glass beverage dispenser on the right side of the upstairs bar, (*insert mom's voice*) so remember to hydrate yourself after having drinks! read more

Staff 10/10 Drinks 10/10 they were well made, quickly made, and stronggg (beware the Daywalker) Came here initially during the COVID reopening when they had food (which was bomb). This place looks amazing! I'm glad I made a reservation to get a little private tiki hut. The decor is awesome and def a cool place to see. But, It was a warm night and it was warm in the place too... I was bummed out by the crowd tho. It was really quiet inside- wish there was some music or a DJ or something to bring more of an island vibe or at least liven the place up a bit. They even have this one section with a tiny waterfall and is a little more secluded. Anyway the overall feel of the place is dreamy with a night sky motif. There are twinkling lights above to imitate stars. The drinks as you know are in the $$ side but that's standard for tiki bars. The drink menu is fun with lots and lots of choices. I LOVED THIS PLACE!!! I went on a Friday night (9pm), without reservations & for a party of two so there was a bit of a wait (~1hr), but it was sooo worth the wait. The staff/service was amazing & friendly, from the moment we were waiting in line, the guy monitoring the entrance (mo?) was super friendly & trying his best to accommodate us. Once we were inside, Bryan? was super chill & checked in on us when he noticed the server hadn't immediately checked in on us, giving us complimentary drinks & sending the server our way. The server(zyan?) was also so nice & friendly!! We ordered a scorpion bowl which was strong & super yummy!! I also ordered a piña colada & it was DELICIOUS!!! These drinks were so yummy & definitely did the job LOL the environment was so cool & tiki themed, we didn't get to see the volcano :( but it was still super cute in there! We kicked off Kevin B's birthday celebration recently with a happy hour at this hot spot... Thanks to the crew that arrived early to hold a spot, we had a place for our group to congregate... without that, we would have been standing awkwardly around -- if we were even able to get in! I don't hang at Tiki Bars often, but Pagan Idol definitely delivered on the awesome Polynesian atmosphere, variety of colorful and handcrafted cocktails, and overall vibe. I perused the menu for awhile before deciding to go for the Pineapple Express, which I was super happy with. It went down easy for sure, but one was enough for my lightweight self! I encourage you to watch the bartenders make your drinks -- you can see the attention to detail and special ingredients that go into each one! It's entertaining too - they definitely put love into each one... and you kind of have to since there isn't table service (at least there didn't appear to be when we were there). If I worked nearby these days, I'd hop on over in my sweats and shake my tail feather to the background music with a "Witch Doctor" in hand, woot-woot! My friend and I came here on a Wednesday night, sat at the bar and watched the bartenders (Dan & Johnny) in action. They're extremely friendly and attentive; every drink is made with love. We totally dig the vibe, not as cheesy as Tonga Room if ya feel me. It wasn't too crowded due to the beginning of Fleet Week in SF. There were sailors looking lost in our fair city. I directed them towards Broadway, as they were looking for titty bars and not tiki bars LOL! I also thanked them for their service in protecting our beautiful country of course. Onto the drinks, the "Bird of Paradise" had too much ice in it, but "Dawn Patrol" was on point! My friend's second drink was "Flex on the Beach" - reminded us of a slushy "Hurricane" in New Orleans, except in NOLA, you can walk on the streets with it. Patrons can purchase souvenir mugs & glasses, prices are listed on the menu, if not...simply ask. Walk towards the back and checkout the rear bar. Too crowded and there was one time that I had to wait in a long line to get in right after working hours. I dislike waiting for a bar place just to get drinks. I didn't attempt to wait to get in for that one visit. The second time to check this place out, it took an hour to wait yet again, in line, not to get in, but to get drinks. It was about a whole hour in line to order and then have them make the drinks. Sober talk while being thirsty. On another note, it isn't just another bar, but a tiki spot with themed paradise drinks to delve into. The decor is a good getaway, I'm not going to lie, from the working environment. I like what this place is and it's conveniently located in FiDi. I just wished that this place is bigger. Birds of paradise was ordered because I like the name. They have the tiki bowls that is great for sharing. Come early is the key here to beat the crowd. It's on the loud side to hold a conversation continuously. You are greeted by a classier, well lit bar in front and the farther you make your way to the back, the darker and louder it gets. This was more of a club than a bar in our eyes. They were nice in comping the erroneous order and just giving us the fries that we ordered any way. We were also not informed of the "required food" policy (apparently they are doing this because of covid?) until we ordered our drinks, which made this whole experience feel very scammy as we went to different bars that did not have this same policy a week before. Drinks: 3/5 Two people from our party got cocktails (banana life and the bird) and we got a bowl to share for the table. The bird was a 5/5 while banana life was more of a 4/5. The Mai Tai bowl that we got, however, was more of a 2/5. Service: 0/5 We were informed when we got our check that our waitress decided to upgrade our bowl to something twice as expensive as what we ordered without telling us first. Since we have never been here, we didn't question the size of the bowl at first. We also were unable to fight the tab since there was no itemized receipt before the purchase was made. I have to admit I have a thing for tiki bars. It probably started with my senior ball and going to the Tonga Room at the Fairmont in my heather blue tuxedo. The feeling only got bigger and messier when I was at the University of Chicago and found any excuse to down a scorpion bowl at the late, lamented Ciral's House of Tiki on East 53rd - finishing finals, finishing mid-terms, finishing the dark half plate at Harold's Chicken Shack down the street, passing by on the way to the L. Maybe that was why I was a bit giddy about this place, just the anticipation made my heart palpitate and my hips go into a hernia-threatening hula. Jamie W. and I decided to stop by after a hearty meal at the newly refurbished Alfred's Steakhouse and hey, we were in a retro mood anyway. It wasn't too crowded at around 8PM on a Wednesday evening. What a cool set-up. You enter a room that looks like the inside of a pirate ship with a huge aquarium on the side. They need to get more fish though. Almost every Thursday, I worship the pagan idol... Sure there are a lot of tiki bars in SF now, but the pagan idol is an up and coming one! With a very expansive tiki menu and festive decorations, Pagan Idol always offers a good time. In terms of drinks, I love the witch doctor and the amount of rum they put in it! Their bowls are more affordable than other tiki places, but they aren't as strong as most. The drinks are more on the tropical side than fuq you up side. Cute tiki bar in FiDi - MUCH bigger than I originally thought. It goes all the way back. By the time we arrived around 5:30pm on a Friday, it was mostly packed. Get here early folks!! Love the interior, vibes, and cute Hawaiian shirts the bartenders wear. Docked a star because their machine that makes frozen drinks was frozen + drinks are pricey/pretty but small. $17 is pretty steep for a cocktail. They are smart to use smaller/crushed ice cubes that seem like there's not much ice, but there is. One time thing for me - worth it to come at least once. I'm not sure who's idea it was to come here, but we were in the neighborhood and decided to drop by Pagan Idol. It was a stormy Saturday (March 5th) around 10:30pm. The place was packed. We decided to do a walk through to get a feel for the layout of the bar. There's a main bar up front and another one in the back room. The back room didn't feel as crowded, but it was super stuffy, so we decided to find a space by the front bar. We ended up finding two stools along the wall, so we snagged those seats. Getting a drink proved to be a little bit of a challenge. It took a while to get the attention of the bartender to place an order. But once we did, it took no time at all. (I think everything was maybe pre-mixed?) *Bird of paradise: cachaca, reposado tequila, lemon, vanilla, passionfruit whip, li hing mui, sea salt ($12) *Mai tai float: rhum martinique, jamaican rum, ron de venezuela, orange liqueur, lime, orgeat, house float, aloha ($12) I'm honestly not a huge fan of tiki drinks as I more or less like my drinks straight up. These were a little too sweet for me. Out of the two, I preferred the Bird of paradise over the Mai tai. It was easier to drink and had a little tartness to it. That cut into the sweetness. I'm not big on rum, so I just had a sip of the mai tai. The decor here is awesome. They have fake windows with screens behind them displaying water and swimming fish. Kinda like peering through an underwater porthole? It definitely feels like you're inside a ship with all the wood decor. And the lamps were so cute! I think they were supposed to resemble a kraken? It's statistically impossible for a city, any city, to have too many tiki bars. San Francisco has a new one and it's a goodie. Be ready to flash your i.d. as this place is all business at the front, party inside. A doorman cockblocks the entry, checking to make certain all patrons are 21 and over and if he really needed my i.d. to prove such a thing then he's probably already lost his vision. I made it inside. What an inside. The space isn't huge but it's quite enchanting. The front room brings a smile to your face with its highly stylized fishy decor. Keep going and you'll find more unique places - is that a lava wall? - including private little tiki huts which can be reserved in advance for your 4 - 8 person party. Got a party bigger than that? You can actually reserve the whole place. I wish I knew someone who would reserve the whole place. I'd love that party. Pagan Idol's menu is about perfect and I sampled widely. It's intriguing, with each drink looking more unique than the last. I ordered at the bar and chatted up the bartender, learning that he'd spent many years working at Trader Vic's. The pedigree shows. Rum based drinks with flavors like passion fruit are potent and well prepared and dare I say it, reasonably priced. At least by 2016 standards. Have more than one of these and I suggest you Uber your way home. At regular intervals there's a startling clap of thunder followed by what must be theatrical smoke enveloping certain areas of the bar. It's an experience. The very rear of Pagan Idol is where I found room and, unfortunately, I understand why. Though it features a decent view into other parts and you're there amidst tiki decor, the lighting in this part of the bar is a bit off and this space feels a bit like an afterthought. I'd actually suggest it would be the perfect spot for a 3-person uke band but I'm not in charge. Even if you wind up in the worst seat in the house you're gonna have fun here. It's a tiki bar. The bartender was curt and rude at best, when he asked what I wanted and I attempted to order he rudely made a hand gesture and stated that I could not order until my friend was ready?!? I've never been told that I needed to wait on another to order a drink at the bar. Ridiculous...but it's not what you say, it's how you say it. The scenery is worth the visit, they have gone all out! The bar itself is pretty cool, but staffing has MAJOR problems. On a Saturday night, they had a total of 1 bartender working until they opened the back bar, with dozens of people waiting for drinks. It took over 30 minutes to buy 1 drink (which we probably would have enjoyed at least 2 drinks each had they been able to serve them in a reasonable amount of time). Even worse, the bartender was so so easily distracted that instead of steadily serving the drinks as the ONLY person there doing so, he would start chatting with the people waiting at the bar for their drinks (about where to eat in the neighborhood, etc), and on nearly EVERY drink he made, he would lose track of what he was doing halfway through making it because he would stop and do something else (close someone's tab, talk to the bar back, look for different booze, etc). There was ZERO hustle for this bartender. At one point after making someone's cocktails, with a line of people waiting, he lost track of the person he was making drinks for because she just flitted off to somewhere else in the bar, so he just STOPPED and WAITED--making no drinks at all--for her to finally return to the bar. Then he suddenly rings a bell and leaves to go open the back bar--no explanation. No one making any drinks. Just leaves. Uh--why couldn't the bartenders clearly working back there do that?!? It was maddening. Had I not already waited for 20 minutes we would have just left and had cocktails somewhere else. I would definitely think twice about hitting this place up again, even though the Mai Tai was fine and the decor pretty cool, but if they can't adequately staff their bar with competent non-ADHD bartenders it's not worth it. read more

Definitely recommend getting on their social media, as we made a special trip to come here, and they were closed for a party. Wah! We came back last night (Wednesday 6pm), and they were open and it wasn't crowded in the least. We sat by the volcano, and enjoyed the eruptions! I got the fish bowl for everyone to share. $50 for the one with frame and $24 monkey fish bowl which is smaller and it was perfect for 6 people. all of us were pretty buzzed after the drinks. that showed how strong their drinks were. It can get a little warm inside, so stay hydrate. Love how they have a self serve water station, its perfect since the bar is too busy to serve water for everyone. Pretty fun tiki bar. Came here for a Thursday date. Wish I hadn't. Not because of the bar but because of the date. There is plenty of space but not as ample of a sitting area. Service was a little confusing. We sat down and some tables had menus and a hostess getting their drink orders but that never happened for us. So he ended up ordering me a mojito at the bar without me having looked at the menu. I imagine there are more fun drinks but, the mojito was good. Unsure of the pricing. When music started playing it got a little too loud to have a conversation so be mindful of that if that's what you're looking to do. I would come back and update my review mostly because I love tiki bars and feel like I haven't truly experienced this one yet. I'd been wanting to go to Pagan Idol for a while, so suggested it as a second bar for my coworkers and I to go to after work on Friday. We came around 6pm and it was tame and not crowded (my coworker said that it can get pretty rowdy at later times). It's very dark inside, so it took a bit for my eyes to adjust. Once they did, I was able to appreciate the great decor inside - very Hawaiian. We ordered the tropical typhoon punch bowl to share. It was beautifully decorated, very fruity, and pretty strong - I could taste the alcohol. This seems to be standard for drinks at Pagan Idol, as some drinks on the menu are labeled as "limit 2 per customer," and the bartender told us that it's due to the strength of the drinks. Historically speaking, I am not a rum drinker, but I will make an exception for a super rad tiki bar on my last night in San Fransisco. This place is on point. Fleek? What do the kids say? Anyway, two drinks were most certainly enough for me. Pagan Love and Pagan Potion were my forms of worship that evening. Holy smokes, so delicious. Tiki drinks usually look good, but these drinks blew me out of the water. Pagan Love, enjoyed first, was rum, lime, orange, guava, papaya, and funk bass lines. That's right, delicious they were, those funk bass lines. The sweetness and citrus was balanced perfectly. As far as the Pagan Potion goes, it has me at Chartreuse. It was herbal and coconut-y... Freaking delicious. I never figured out the rhyme or reason, but every so often a really loud fog blasted out from the ceiling. I get fog...tiki bars... What I didn't get was that it was so loud when it turned on it could make everyone at the bar spill their drinks from being startled. It was hilarious, but might make more work for them in the end. My boyfriend and I came here for my birthday. This place is great for groups, it's so lively from the music to the decor. It's a legit tiki bar/lounge experience. The bartenders really take their time making the drinks perfect. You order them at the bar and watch them put so much detail into making the drinks taste amazing and picture perfect. They also have a large menu of drinks to pick from and they all sound delicious. We will definitely be coming here again. read more

This was quite an experience for my first tiki bar adventure! I was giddy with excitement as we walked into pagan idol this particular Thursday evening. Our group walked off the streets of SF and straight into a wooden ship. We passed by a pretty aquarium and intimate 2 top tables and up a few stairs to the back room. We were able to grab a few drink menus to ponder are pagan libations. I decided on the banana life because it sounded utterly delicious. Rum, banana liquor, grapefruit, lime and fassionola. "What is that, anyway?" I asked the Hawaiian shirt clad sir behind the bar. It's a syrup that is made up of tropical fruits and is a staple in great tiki drinks. Sounds good, good sir. Serve it up! I watched as he created the masterpiece and garnished it with a banana leaf and plantain chips. It. Was. Everything! Not too much of any one particular flavor, and while I was a little nervous it might be super sweet it was a nice, refreshing drink that didn't make me overthink the sugar content. But let's be honest, at a tiki bar no one is counting calories! One bit of warning for my friends who are hanging out in the back room: cling tightly to your drinks. There will be a loud burst of sound and fog to resemble that of a volcano erupting. I almost lost my drink as I was not expecting it! I honestly don't know what to make of Pagan Idol. Pagan Idol has a tiki bar themed concept and it is kitschy over-the-top island to the max. There is a cave grotto, there is a starry night sky, there is every vaguely island themed piece of decor available, including Kraken light sconces. You can order drinks in bowls and split them with a group. We got the Scorpion Bowl and the Frozen Potion bowl for three. The Frozen Potion was delicious. The Scorpion Bowl was fairly spicy. The most expensive menu item is $125, and it is a drink that comes on fire and serves 8-10. If you order this drink, smoke and lights come on, and a loudspeaker says something unintelligible to celebrate your choice. This place is really committed to the theme, and it shows. read more

Alright. They had some good beers but limited selection. The drinks were as expected, sweet. Not anything too impressive. The service wasn't great. We had a coworker get scolded for an outside beer brought in that we didn't have anything to do with. read more

It's definitely refreshing to see a Tiki Bar in the SF FiDi area. Why? Because Tiki Bars always makes me think that I'm in a far away place, away from work. And the people in Tiki Bars always seem to be in vacation, happy mode. I wasn't at Pagan Idol long enough to see the whole bar but from what I've seen, it definitely has that vacation feel. The bartenders and even the bouncer is sporting a Hawaiian shirt! I love it when bars put purse hangers near the seats. It's makes it so much more convenient for us ladies or lads with bags to socialize without worrying where to place our bags. Their menu consists of lots of rum based tiki drinks and those cool looking fire tiki bowls. I got the banana life drink and it tastes really good, pretty strong, does not taste like bananas, but so much ice and so expensive! The drink costs $12 and that's definitely waaaay more than what I'm used to paying for a tiki drink. But then again, it is the SF FiDi... The sad part of this bar is, no happy hour menu?!? WTF?!?! Would I come here again? Without a HH menu, it'll definitely make it hard for me to want to come back here again....but I love the tiki bar idea in Fidi! read more

I love themed bars where it's obvious the business put effort into creating an experience for you. Pagan Idol is outfitted perfected for a Friday evening tiki bar experience. The drinks are refreshing and fruity, the menu a real work of art, and the tentacled chandeliers and tiki idols strewn throughout the establishment creates a fun escape from not only work but also the drab city feeling. I got the Tart 'n Great with lime and rum, which came with a festive flower and slice of lime on top. The back had a surprising amount of space and it's always exciting to witness tables that decide to ball out with a drink that's served flambé. I'm glad I got to visit! read more
