My oriental rug I inherited from my mother was in dire need of a thorough cleaning. The first time it was washed was over a decade ago and I can honestly say I wasn't too satisfied with the cleaning. Searching for a reputable oriental rug cleaner through Yelp there weren't many choices specializing in oriental rugs. I went with Palayan's and I'm glad I did. My rug was picked up from my house and delivered back within a couple of weeks or so. The rug is clean and vibrant and smells so much better now. Even sone of the stains I thought wouldn't come out have lifted. They were honest to let me know that there was a possibility some of the staining may not come out but I have to say I don't see the black staining it had before. Last year when I was moving from San Francisco to Santa Rosa Palayan's cleaned my large Karastan rug that my dog had more than a few accidents on. Shant picked it up for free and originally agreed to deliver it to me in Santa Rosa for an additional $50, which I thought was totally reasonable, however once I realized it could fit in my car I ended up picking it up to save a few bucks. They also stored it for me for a few weeks until my new home was ready for move in. They gave me a verbal appraisal because I was thinking of insuring it and offered a discount if I needed an official appraisal written up. Which I failed to utilize.... dang it! They did a fabulous job and were very accommodating. I highly recommend them. P.S. Rug still looks great and no more doggy accidents!! read more

Super fast response time. But more importantly, high-quality service at reasonable prices. Based on a review from another trusted Yelper, we contacted Shant about cleaning and restoration services. We had a mix of aged and damaged handmade antique carpets, along with some modern machine-made rugs. All were terribly dirty, in poor shape, and long overdue for cleaning. Shant handled the cleaning, and did a wonderful job at very reasonable prices. For the restoration, he used some trusted repairers who could do the painstaking hand-sewing required to save the older heirloom carpets, some of which we thought might be beyond saving. Yes, I'm happily joining the ranks of 5-star reviewers of Mr. Palayan. My Pakistani rug had not been cleaned in at least 10 years. It had so much dust embedded in it the colors were very muddy and I was skeptical it would ever regain its' former beauty. With some house renovations came my opportunity - the rug was rolled up and driven over to Palayan's Oriental Rugs. As I sheepishly unrolled it, Mr. Palayan gently admonished me about its' condition, but also exclaimed over its' colors and workmanship. He told me about its' history, and said he would make it beautiful again. He was a man of his word - a few days later he called and said I should pick up the rug asap, before someone stole it, since it was so gorgeous and laying on the floor in his shop. My wife and i bought a 60+ year old Persian rug during our honeymoon in Turkey many years ago and is the cornerstone of our apt. They did an incredible job in cleaning our 8x11 Karastan rug with silk threads. Shant is one of the most transparent, honest, nice and professional expert we have met across all kinds of service areas. He was up front with his current scheduling, due to COVID, what they can and can't do (setting expectations), and going above just rug cleaning to restore our rug. Price is reasonable for oriental rug cleaning that requires specialized equipment, procedures and manual handling. He picked up the rug, and placed it where we wanted it upon return. He educated us on how to care for the rug, things to watch out for and shared tips on oriental rug maintenance and issues in general. Our puppy even loved him! Highly highly recommend. read more

I called a *lot* of places. I needed someone to clean my wool area rugs and my silk persian rug--most places I found were chem dry type of services that are really best for wall-to-wall carpeting and people who really don't care how many chemicals they're taking in. I wanted someone to hand wash the rugs with cold water. With a broom. Old school. So Palayan does this, and to boot, they had better prices per sq foot than everybody else I called. They don't pick up or deliver your rugs, which is annoying, but I have a hatch back and was able to squeeze a 10x13 into it with the front seat pushed way up. It's night and day. Check the before/after photos I added. When I picked up my persian rug (which is only about 3x5, it's a prayer rug from Iran, silk), which my boyfriend had recently spilled red wine on (which caused a frantic episode of me running around pouring pitchers of water on it and lots of Forever New wash!), was not only a beige color I did not know it was (I thought it was a nice cafe au lait color--it sat in my Grandmother's house for 25 years probably never washed), but a couple who was there trying to buy a rug was trying to convince him to sell it! No worries, he wouldn't do that. You can trust them to take care of rugs you care about and all and all it was a better price than elsewhere in the city (about $280 for my 10x13 wool which isn't worth much, and another $250 or so for my very small persian rug that had possible wine damage, which he managed to get out). read more

Miracle Worker!!!! That is Yenzig Palayan, the proprietor of Palayan's Oriental Rugs. My first encounter was to bring several Persian and Egyptian rugs to Mr. Palayan for cleaning. A person who shall remain nameless and a cat had badly mistreated my precious Persian rug, so I had little hope of salvaging it, but to my surprise when I returned to pick up the rugs, including my Persian, they looked amazing. There were colors and textures that I did not even realize were there and not a sign of cat damage. Wow!!! But it gets better than this, much better. Recently, we spotted a 10X13 hand-made Persian rug for sale on Craig's list for a very low price, but as it turned out, the low price was for a reason. The rug looked like hell as if someone had lived on it for decades. Significant portions of the rug were worn down, so that there was no color left on the rug, the trim had all but disintegrated and the edges were torn up in huge chunks, and much of the color had faded. But I had driven for over an hour to see this rug and having seen the miracles that Mr. Palayan can perform, I decided to take a gamble on it, hoping underneath it all, there was a beautiful rug. After purchasing the rug for chump-change, I drove straight to Mr. Palayan and he said that he would do the best that he could, but it needed a lot of attention. He said that it would be ready in a week, but after only three days he called me with an excited voice saying that "My son, your gamble paid off; you have a beautiful rug!!!" He said that he was able to do a lot more for it than he expected. The rug had indeed been transformed into something amazingly beautiful and the price was beyond reasonable. To perform this miracle, Mr. Palayan had re-dyed the faded portions, perfectly matched the colors, put in beautiful new trim, repaired the edges (literally re-stitched all around the rug), and it had been cleaned to bring out the full beauty of the rug. I only hope that Mr. Palayan is immortal, because he is the only person that I ever want to touch our rugs and the only person that bring back beautiful rugs from the dead. I had two runners that were soaked when we had a flood in our flat. The rugs were 15 years old. I spoke with Shant, the son of the owner. He offered to pick up the rugs but I decided to drop them off since they were already loaded in my car. He returned them two weeks later looking beautiful and feeling great. The color popped and they felt so great with the new under padding we purchased from them. I had an 8'x10' wool rug that was completely destroyed in a flood in my basement apartment. The rug had then sat outside for several days before Mr. Palayan got to it. It took a month of wash dry cycles to get the mildew and stains out, but the rug is now better than when we dropped it off. The total bill was $400, which was a deal for an antique rug that we were close to writing off. Mr. Palayan is also extremely nice and easy to deal with. I had heard about the good work Palayan did for my son, who has collected many old rugs during his travels round the world and had some cleaned by them. Found Palayan's Oriental rugs thru yelp reviews. When I walked into the store and met the owner, I knew that he was just the man I was looking for. He took a look at my oriental rug - a gift from my parents - and attended to it as if it was a patient in need of a cure. It definitely was - I have used the carpet in a high traffic hallway area and it had a nasty splatter of stains. Also it was worn out down from foot traffic one side more that the other. Mr. Palayan was taking the patient on and gave me a reasonable estimate for the work it would need. He called me back two days later and was all excited. "Wait until you see the carpet", he said and wanted me to see it right away. I was out of town that weekend, but picked it up the Monday following. I could not believe the result - not only did the stains come out, but he even managed to address the uneven wear - something I did not even expect to be able to be fixed. The cleaning facilities are on premises and Mr. Palayan shared some of the concerns and his thoughts on how to fix them on other 'patient's' that have come in after mine. I have a whole new appreciation for what I have been running around on unaware for years. If you're looking for a true expert with a passion for what he does, Palayan's Oriental rugs is for you. He told me about the history of the carpet and how to better take care of it in the future. I'll be bringing it back regularly from now on to take care of this beautiful heirloom piece. Mr. Palawan did not do the work he said he did. Returned dirty rugs to me all rolled up and damp when he knew I was going to store them. Did not honor an agreement we made for his son to come and look at the rugs, re-clean them. Mr. Palayan's motto is "make ready the cash". That seemed to be his major concern, getting cash, not a check or credit card. I would never go here again. He wouldn't work with me to straighten out the situation. That's a bad sign in my book. Mistakes can happen but I got the feeling the bad workmanship was not a mistake at Palayans Rugs. read more

Review in Spanish and English We had a moth problem with our wool rugs and took them to Palayan's. They did a great job and cleaned them thouroghly, killing all the moths and their eggs. Moreover, they got rid of all the dust and a curry stain on a white part of the rug that we had previously tried to remove unsuccessfully. Both rugs truly look like new now, and they cleaned them in less 48 hours. The owner of the store, Mr. Palayan, has a great personality and deserves a special mention. He is Armenian and speaks 8 languages including Spanish, French and Italian. I happened to go to the store with my parents who are both Spanish and were visiting. Mr. Palayan was very nice and polite and talked to them in Spanish about history and politics. My parents were truly delighted. Overall a great experience, we will definitely come back in the future! To have found Mr. Palayan was such good fortune as most other rug cleaners in the Bay Area only deals in carpets and machine made materials. He is most knowledgeable about care and quality of all kinds of Oriental rugs (I had 5 of Persian & Turkish). For a good price and great turnaround time, he not only cleaned my rugs but even mended them (compliments of Mr. Palayan) only because he cares deeply about these kinds of rugs and the handiwork that had gone into making these works of art.
