We came here using a groupon for dinner. We were greeted by a friendly, older gentleman (manager? owner?) and seated. It was early in the evening so it was pretty empty. Our waiter came over and offered us some drinks and shared the specials. It did take a while for him to come back and take our order, however the food came out pretty quickly. I had a pasta dish with goat cheese and it was delicious! We also had the trio of chicken, veal and shrimp which was delicious. As we were leaving, the pianist started playing which was a nice touch. I really do not often review restaurants, specially when i am disappointed by the service. I only do so when I 100% feel inclined to leave a review in the hopes to reach the business owner. Yes, this review is for the owner to read it, I hope you get to read it! I am very familiar with Palazzo, aka Montclair Pasta Company. It used to be located on South Fullerton in Montclair, NJ, for many years. It had a classic interior architecture, and above average quality in good, actually the food is the restaurants' primary strength. I have ordered chicken penne vodka and it was good. Now when it comes to service, I think there are so much room for improvement. The male servers you have are not polite or friendly at all. I am a guy, I just want to get my food for pick up, I do not need attitude or rude behavior for no apparent reason. The hostesses you have are polite, I understand they're there to be a pretty face of the restaurant, thats amazing, good job, its working. But 99% of the time when I go for pick up orders the hispanic dark skin waiter and the other waiter (white+glasses) they're always busy talking to the hostesses instead of helping a customer who is waiting for their order. You should definitely consider a change in your servers because right now they are not efficient or friendly. There are plenty of local school/college kids that would be more than capable of balancing polite behavior as well as efficient service. You should really fire the servers I mentioned above, they're not helping your business at all. I do not mean to be inconsiderate but I only say this after being at your restaurant more than 50 times in 2020 and experiencing this at first hand. Cheers! P.S. Palazzo Restaurant - Montclair, New Jersey Street parking only. After circulating for over 20 minutes, had to park five blocks away and walked 20 minutes to the restaurant. Went there on a Tuesday night. The dining room was not busy. There were only three tables occupied the entire time we were there. I had the Spinosini-Fresh pasta with grilled octopus, clams & mussels and it was very good. The clams & mussels were very fresh and juicy. The Octopus was very tender. My wife had the Chicken Porcini-Boneless chicken breast sautéed with mushrooms & sausage in wine sauce with sautéed asparagus and she said it was also very good. Overall, good food, good price, good decor, and the waiter John was very attentive. A very good experience indeed. A definite 4-5 stars. read more

Came for Easter brunch. What a rip off. $29 for stale croissants, bagels, desserts. Bland scrambled eggs, hard French toast...chicken tasted mass produced, lamb and broccoli rabe only redeeming factor. My husbands cousin is a vegan and only ate the potatoes. They offered her a small plate of gluten free pasta and actually attempted to charge for that. They charge for soda too when you're already paying all this money for a crap buffet. The piano is also grossly out of the tune but the pianist was amazing. Dinner food coming out looked decent, but wouldn't give it a second thought after the brunch experience. read more

I have to say, it didn't start off well. We had an 8pm reservation, and didn't get seated until 847. People were coming in after us and being seated. When we asked, it seemed as though they actually forgot us. When we voiced our displeasure, they were very apologetic, polite, but it still took some time. Once seated, the waiter was quick and very nice, and the bus staff attentive. The food was another story. Really very good and redeemed the evening for us. I had a crab soup that was unique and outstanding. I then had a mixed grill that was also delicious and the portion was perfect sized. Palazzo's brings the dining experience to an unprecedented level in the Montclair area. I was invited by a business colleague to join a party of three out to dinner on a Friday night. Upon entering, we immediately took notice of a friendly staff, exotic smells of fresh pasta's and a live jazz band that was playing renditions of classic holiday songs. Our server was a clean cut gentleman, who made recommendations and answered questions with confidence and poise. I took his suggestions and opted for a "Calamari Balsamico" for an appetizer, followed by "Linguini ala Nostra" as my entree. The Calamari was an exciting twist to a culinary classic, and my Linguini was executed with perfection. Homemade blackened linguini with squid ink, an assortment of seafood in a marinara sauce! Palazzo's is the only restaurant in the area that can pull of this dish without sacrificing quality of food, nor quantity of the portion for such a modest price (Nineteen dollars!) We ended our dining experience with Cappucino's - and shared a Chocolate Soufflé and Tiramisu; all prepared by the staff. My colleagues had spoke highly of Palazzos, exclaiming they have been coming back again and again for years. With one experience at this restaurant, I now understand why! Palazzo's genuinely makes you feel like family while you are dining. The staff seems to understand their customers, and have honest care and sense of professionalism while they work. This is a wonderful Italian restaurant that offers more than the usual fare. While they serve the classics in pasta and risotto, they also have innovative creations from the chef. I like the charming atmosphere with beautiful art work, candlelit tables and a piano that comes to life with American standards on the weekend. Their fish is always top notch. I had red snapper with shrimp in a garlic wine sauce that was divine. My husband had pasta with mixed seafood, clams, mussels and shrimp. He also had pulpo (octopus) which he claimed was the best he'd had anywhere! And he orders it everywhere we go. They have a prefixe dinner as well as many specials. I had a special, grilled portobello mushroom with goat cheese and tomato. Boy was that good. The portobello mushroom had a wonderful grilled flavor. I love their mashed potatoes and they're very accommodating about substitutions. I substituted regular mashed potatoes instead of the sweet potatoes offered with the entree. I overheard the woman next to us asking if she could have a mushroom risotto instead of the seafood risotto which was on the menu. They have an extensive wine list and offer half as well as full bottles. I had resolved to give up rose in the cold weather but they offer a favorite rose, sirene, so I had that and it was perfect with my fish. They have a delicious looking dessert menu, but since I was satisfyingly full at that point so you're on your own, but I'm sure you won't be disappointed. read more

Over the course of the pandemic, I've been a loyal customer and supported the business, however today I was extremely disappointed in the treatment I received. I was served an undercooked octopus, with quite the odor coming from it and partly inedible. The waitress promised to bring us another one, however we were met by the angry, astonishly rude owner, John, who wasn't wearing a mask and proceeded to insult, gaslight and challenge me, stating "since you're the octopus expert tell me...". I'm no octopus expert, but I do know this is no way to treat a customer. read more

Mother's Day dinner was ruined for my wife due to extremely slow service last night. I placed an order for takeout at 6:10pm and was told that the order would be ready for pickup in 30 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant and couldn't find a parking spot due to the long line of cars outside but eventually found a spot and walked into the restaurant around 6:45pm. Little did I know that the line of cars was due to all of the UberEats drivers that were waiting on orders that were delayed by over 1 hour. The hostess took my name and credit card and said that my order was almost ready. After paying for dinner, she asked me to wait a few minutes for the order. My meal was not ready until 8:30pm...almost 2.5 hours after placing my order!!! The hostess was pleasant despite the long line of frustrated takeout customers and Uber Eats drivers, but the manager refused to talk to me nor honor my numerous requests to cancel my order and give me a refund. I wasn't alone as at least 7 other takeout customers also attempted to get refunds to no avail. The food was fine but the restaurant clearly had no plans to manage a busy Mother's Day weekend and didn't even give the courtesy of sending the manager to face the hungry and frustrated line of customers waiting for dinner in the rain. I never write bad reviews, but 2.5 hours of no communication nor resolution for a backed up kitchen is ridiculous. read more

Ambiance and service nice. Salad we both ordered for $12 had very little chick peas, very little blue cheese and tons of basic, cheap, common small green olives. It fell short of its description. Bread served with dish of olive oil had no flavor for either. One entree with rigatoni, broccoli rabe and shrimp had a lot of garlic pieces but no flavor. We have been dining in Montclair for almost 20 years. Many of which have been spent at Palazzo. This is one of our favorite restaurants . The atmosphere is warm and friendly upon arriving and stays that way till you leave. The menu changes seasonally and the food is always fresh and cooked to perfection. The master chief / owner , John graciously accommodates all of his patrons by changing any item per request. It is the most consistent restaurant I have dined at. I highly recommend this restaurant. I have eaten at so called steak houses and this steak was as good as those restaurants. The staff is ready to custom order for the asking! The place is nice, but basically it's a tacky place trying to be fancy. And in that, they charge WAAY too much for the food. Very overpriced. I'm not a food snob by any means, but a $24 plate of ravioli with 8 medium ravioli is not right. The food was good, don't get me wrong, but definitely not worth the price. The bread they gave us was cold, as was the butter, and we didn't get more bread when we were done with the first basket (which we both would have liked since the food portions were so small). The wine was DISGUSTING. It was a $20 bottle of syrup, practically. So sweet, neither of us could finish a glass (and it wasn't supposed to be a dessert bottle). The service was OK, we were greeted promptly but then seated near the door (cold!), not given more bread, and our empty bread basket and butter place sat on our table the entire time. They are in a very nice neighborhood with so many excellent places to choose from, so you would think they would put a little bit of effort into their establishment. Perhaps the Palazzo attitude is one where there's no reason to excel at something when there aren't enough people around to see it happen... Because the place was empty. We didn't know why when we walked in, but we knew exactly why by the time we walked out. Inferior food at prices we wouldn't mind paying at a superior establishment. Poorly managed, probably due to a lack of experience managing anything other than a ghost town. Walking along bloomfield ave on Friday night, this happened to be the only place that didn't have a wait. Nice decor and ambience especially with the pianist (great date spot). Service was ok, but did seem a bit rushed. Menu items did not seem anything special, so I went with the chicken piselli. Decent, but the potato croquette was very good. Calamari was good, but not the typical fried calamari you would expect. Overall not a bad a spot if you want to go for your normal Italian fare. read more

To be perfectly honest and not to exaggerate, my trip to Palazzo could very well be one of the best restaurant experiences I've had ever. Located in a perfect spot in Montclair, there's outside seating or you can sit by a window and get a nice breeze. The staff is unbelievably friendly and accommodating. They give you homeade bread with a sauce on it. For appetizers, we had zucchini cakes and calamari with balsamic vinaigrette...awesome. For dinner I had chicken with eggplant, cheese, and prosciutto...delicious. Finally, tartuffo with an espresso topped off the meal. Great ambiance and someone playing the piano as well. I could go on and on but apparently they've been in business for 17+ years and I can see why. If I could give the restaurant more stars, I would. First time at this Bistro & it was excellent! Ambiance was festive & warm with holiday music in the background. Our waiter John was pleasant & knowledgeable about the menu. Three of us tried the special of the night which was the cod with a seafood risotto - all three of our plates were clean! Very flavorful & just the right amount. Ordered the Mediterranean Sampler and Assorted grill veg for starters... the med salad consisted of 3 little saucers with a MINISCULE serving of hummus, goat cheese & eggplant in each dish?!@# The Assorted grilled veg.....consisted of 7 thin zucchini and 1 eggplant slices! Lastly, the short ribs were tough/dry, noticeably microwaved.....especially since they never bothered wiping all the splatters around the edge of plate!?!@#$Oh, and by the way, this was a very slow evening with only about 5 tables in the dreadful place. read more

*Note: This is based off my first impression. It was my first time dining here today. I have reserved a table for 3 online from opentable.com for the first time. This was very convenient, but I was worried that they wouldn't honor my reservation if it wasn't by phone. Also, this was for the Mother's Day brunch which offered a few breakfast items and a few entrees and pastries/bagels/croissants. $32 per person. We arrived maybe ten minutes after 2pm (we reserved for 2pm). The hostess and manager were talking about my reservation coincidentally as we arrived and sat us down next to the window. It was not very crowded. Maybe 75% full. This place is very small. One side of the restaurant was completely lined with a continuous bench from the front of the restaurant to the back. Tables littered the rest of the restaurant. I enjoyed the blue and yellow decor. The dress code is "smart casual". Long story short, for $32, I was expecting a lot more from this restaurant than what I actually experienced. If you want to here more details about my first experience here, please read on. We sat down and was not exactly sure what to do next. We waited for a waiter for a little bit, but no one came so my mother and I went to the buffet while my brother waited to see if a waiter would come. The chicken franchaise was already gone (and goes really quickly). My mother and I came back to our table with our food and a waiter still did not appear so my brother went to the buffet. The waiter finally came over and asked for our drink orders. We opted for the mimosas (my mother never before). It was my first time having it as well so I don't have anything to compare it to. The buffet was limited. The entree portion of it was good: roasted lamb, chicken franchaise, sausage and broccoli rabe, and pork loin. The hot breakfast portion could have been better: The scrambled eggs were ok but needed some seasoning. The bacon was soggy. The breakfast sausage looks like the ones you find in the freezer section and heat up in the microwave. Only I think they actually baked or sauteed these. The french toast, I think was made out of some sort of wheat baguette, the crust was a little tough to cut with my knife. There was also hash browns, diced potatoes with onions and peppers, which were dry and in need of some serious ketchup. The mini croissants tasted very "mass-produced". Comparing it to Costco's mass produced croissants, these were more dinner-roll like and not flaky or buttery at all. Same bland color as a dinner roll, too. The only thing that made the croissant better was the lox I put in it with butter. I love fresh fish. I couldn't find the "assorted muffins" but I think it was the mini muffins that were hiding behind the mountain of croissants. After my third plate, which consisted mostly of chicken franchaise, lamb, and scrambled eggs, I finished my water and was waiting for them to refill it. They didn't. I would be more understanding if the place was packed and they were short staffed, but it wasn't and they weren't. Around 2:30pm, they were nowhere to be found. Maybe because they were getting ready for the dinner setting at 3pm ? They did not even once come over and ask how everything is going. Some customers may not appreciate that and would want to be left alone, but I don't. It's the little things and small gestures that make the experience better. They did take away the used plates once in a while. And the coffee was good, too. Like I said before, I was expecting a lot more than what I have experienced for $32 per person. A casual dress code, limited and mediocre buffet, and poor service, for the price of $32? I've definitely experienced better service and wider choice of food for the price of $20 or less. First let me start off by saying we had heard not so great things about Palazzo..we got a restaurant.com gift certificate and decided to use it and give it a try- SO GLAD WE DID!! We really LOVED our experience here..the service and the ambiance were great..we sat right by the piano and it was so nice- not too loud, but it added something to the atmosphere to spice it up- They did not rush us AT ALL which we loved..we came on a friday night at 7 For appetizers we got mussles and the fried zucchini...My boyfriend loved the mussels..the fried zucchini was good (not amazing but definitely tasty- can't really do too much with that dish anyways) You MUST order from the last page in the menu (chef's recommendations)- My boyfriend got the seafood pasta and he kept commenting on how the octopus was cooked PERFECTLY! I got the duck and mushroom risotto and I literally could not talking about how tasty it was the entire meal. My boyfriend was also extremely impressed. It was SO TASTY! We talked to the waitress and she informed us that both of our dishes had just been added and I was practically begging her to tell the Chef to make them both permanent. We live right down the street and cannot believe we had been holding out on such a great place!!! We will for SURE be back- and I can't stop recommending it to everyone in town. read more

I really enjoyed my dinner here this past Saturday. The fiance and I decided that we wanted to have dinner in Montclair and I was in the mood for calamari and so we settled on Italian. He found this place, we made our reservation, dined and enjoyed it. We shared the calamari balsamico appetizer which was fried calamari in a balsamic vinaigrette. This was my first time having calamari in balsamic vinaigrette and I liked it - a much welcomed difference to the usual marinara sauce. For our entree, my fiance ordered the sea bass with risotto. AMAZING! I'd come back for the risotto alone. I ordered a pasta dish off the menu - sorry can't actually remember which one it was. What I do remember is that I hated it and asked the waiter if I could switch it for the ravioli special (chicken and mushroom in a penna alla vodka sauce). He was gracious about the switch and that dish was much, much better and the portion was perfect. Overall, I had a great experience here - loved the food and loved the service. Last night three of us went for a birthday dinner at Palazzo. Unlike on my previous visits, the service was terrible. We weren't given bread til we flagged down the waiter; waited 45 minutes just for our salad,and one entree --the pork chop--was so overdone that it was inedible. It was taken away without apology. My family and I have been going to Palazzo for at least 9 years now and love love love their food and their service. The wait staff always remembers us and we have actually had to rent the place out for private parties in the past. Everytime I have gone there the food has been consistently good, with lovely portions and an attentive waitstaff. They are not fussy about us bringing children in their was well, since the family is so large sometimes there is a need for a highchair or two. I love their penne and they New York steak sandwich as well. Our favorite is the sauce, which I believe you can purchase in ounces and take home (we also do that often). read more
