This is a place is a spot I've been eyeing for a bit and we were super excited to try it. The interior is very chic and love the decor. We were able to get seated right away on a Friday night, so we got super lucky. While the food was good, the service was really bad. Not sure if it was because our server got over seated or if he wasn't seasoned enough to handle a busy night, I hope it was just an off day. He forgot a bunch of things we asked for like a different salsa and hot sauces. I also ordered another drink, but because we were a bit turned off with the service and almost done with the food I didn't make a big deal about it and chose to forgo it. Hoping to give this spot another shot as I really liked what we had to eat... Maybe it will be a better experience the next time around. read more

Nice ambiance and accommodating for our big party! The restaurant is cleaned and open. Great for a date or a group, or eating alone. It had a classy vibe. The service was good. We were seated and got our drinks in timely manor. The brunch menu was excellent. I posted many of the items and they all tasted amazing, I recommend this place! The music is a bit upbeat so it's not a quiet restaurant. The bar is fabulous. I give this 4stars and I will be back! read more

We arrived at 7 PM and the place was mostly empty, which was surprising for a Saturday night, but the staff was very attentive very nice and super helpful explained to us the different types of specialties they had including drink drinks and food. Right as we sat down, we had a fresh basket of tortilla chips and salsa that was not spicy, but it was very flavorful and tangy. Our food took a bit of time to get to us which was again surprising because there wasn't very many people there, but unless it was very good, I felt like a bit overpriced, but for the area of the ambience, I think it was a good deal. I really love how they reuse the tequila bottles for different margarita flights that was very cute! read more

My friend and I came here for her birthday and it was an overall nice experience! The music is loud and there's a DJ later on in the night just in case you wanted a place that was more quiet. The drinks were relatively sweeter but tasted good. I highly recommend the pulpo/brussel sprouts for an appetizer! I ordered the chicken enchilada and I was already salivating. My husband and I came from Vegas to celebrate our 11th anniversary to Newport Beach, and we heard of this place from our friends. Everything was delicious! They have a huge variety of drinks, which we love. Highly recommend La Paloma and Guava-Mente -- so good! I ordered the Huarache de Campo and my husband had the Zarandeado -- both were amazing. Great ambiance! Alec took great care of us. My husband has had the pulpo twice and consistently called it delicious. I tried the pollo con crema and was impressed with the tenderness and flavors. Didn't need a knife, literally fall-off-the-bone good. Broccolini has great flavor. My husband enjoyed his drinks, though we agreed that they were a little pricey (for us, that is). My Mexican Diet Coke was TINY, but I paced myself between that and sparkling water and was fine. The chips and guacamole were good too. Chips were seasoned creatively. My flour tortillas weren't memorable, but to be fair I asked for them. They weren't part of the dish originally, and there was nothing bad about them either. Was surprisingly quiet on a Wed night but they said it's pretty packed on the weekends. With the beautiful atmosphere, music, and great food, I believe it. Keep it up! We'll be back. read more

The food here was honestly delicious, better than Javier's and Puesto in my opinion. I would come just to get their guac and salsa. All three of my tacos were delicious though and have their own flavor. Carne asada was my favorite!!! The shrimp tacos come with chipotle aioli and some sautéed veg that were full of flavor. I usually recommend a max party of 4 but cool to see they could now accommodate a group of 9 in the back room without issue. They take reservations in advance and walk-ins may go on a wait list. It's great so that each patron/party has a comfortable, undisturbed experience. It's not a crowded, loud, or messy type of bar. Love that they initially provide us with water before we order. Old Fashioned was fragrant and smooth. Orange peel scent was pleasantly present throughout the drink - they used a spray instead of zest - impressive! I had a long week and just wanted to relax, and that moment felt so unnecessary and frustrating. We still love Kitsch Bar, but that experience with Sofia was not okay and definitely left a bad impression. Hopefully it's not something others have to deal with.

Personally, I was all about the Hawaiiana tiki culture and tried to live it every day. Founded by co-owners Leonard Chan and Dominic Iapello, its current home of barely three years in a former dive bar came about when they unceremoniously had to leave the original location. With its proximity to Disneyland's Enchanted Tiki Room and the very niche underground-like society of tiki culture, they found their footing with a consistent customer base and the thrill of island escapism through colorful cocktails, pleasurable pupus, and tropical trimmings. Would I stow myself away somewhere inside and never leave!? PURCHASE(S) Don Q Punch Bowl ($38.00): Made with Don Q's Cristal Silver, Anejo, and 151 Gold Rums, respectively, peach brandy, passion fruit, pineapple juice, and citrus juices, this flaming concoction was rumtastic in every way possible as the tropical juices just made it that much sweeter. There were more ice chips than I liked, but it was a fun trough to drink out of for the four of us who wanted to imbibe. Coconut Shrimp 6pc ($12.00): Breaded and flash-fried plump shrimp served with a sweet chili dipping sauce, these were tasty and perfectly paired with the Don Q cocktail I was drinking. Stowaway Fries ($17.00): Constructed with a pile of crisp golden spud sticks, rum braised pork, and topped with a hearty gravy and sunny-side up egg, this loco moco fries dish was slamming while the slightly charred juicy pork had me squealing with enjoyment. SERVICE We had reservations, so once our entire party arrived, they quickly seated us in a cool cave-live separate alcove for more privacy. Our server arrived with menus, suggestions, and glasses of water. Minutes later, we all ordered at once, and everything (drinks and food) arrived within ten minutes. Because we had another reservation inside the same bar, we informed our male server and to let us know when we were allowed to go there. All was casual, chill, and somewhat on island time - aloha and mahalo! PARKING (FREE): They shared a medium-sized private lot with several other businesses who were closed at this time with plenty of spots - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Located within a strip mall, you opened the front door and walked into an island oasis as if you were a cast member on "Gilligan's Island" with thatched roof material above you, tiki statues displaced on all of the volcanic-looking walls, collections of tiki mugs past and present for purchase, a central square bar with plenty of stools, and seemingly small dark nooks and private spaces where naughty things could happen. No natural lighting whatsoever while an assortment of extremely low-lit electric lights barely guided you along. There were no TVs while I recalled various styles of music played in the background along with chatter and clamor of conversations in all directions. ATTIRE Although I was actually dressed appropriately for the occasion in an aloha shirt, linen pants, and flip-flops, this place was totally casual, so a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops would suffice. OVERALL I had a cowabunga time at Stowaway, and I couldn't wait to return to try more of their awesome-soundling elixirs. I loved tiki bars, and although this was generally out of my range, I'd make a special trip or two here. My one drink was lip-smacking good, the pupus were yummy, the prices were reasonable enough, the atmosphere was stupendous, and the service was friendly and professional. While the drinks menu was loaded with tropical cocktails, an impressive rum selection, and a decent assortment of local craft beers, the food menu was somewhat limited. And, the bar had happy hour TU-FR 4pm-6pm. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $75.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip).
