If you want a really good dipped cone this is the place for you. The food isn't that bad either, it taste like your typical family own fast food joint. Got take out tonight to bring home. While the main course was very good; I do have a complaint about a couple of things. First the girl stated an hour for the order to be ready. I went in at 25 minutes and it was ready. If I waited an hour my food would have been sitting there for 35 minutes. This is not the first time with non-pizza orders. I tried to order Cavatilli and the girl had no clue and after trying to explain what it was I just gave up and ordered two ravioli. The second is that it is nice they give you a small piece of bread with your order, it should be eatable. The last two times the bread has been so stale they should be embarrassed for using it. Ok. While the food was great, the service was not. We were a table of 8. We were celebrating a birthday. Our server, Trish took our drink orders and it took 45 minutes to get 3 glasses of wine , a margarita, a martini and a bloody Mary..and 2 iced teas. We ordered a bruschetta and artichoke..and got a grilled shrimp.. that took as long as the drinks.... so now we have to wait another 20 minutes for what we really ordered! The soup and salads come shortly after the appetizers and BOOM! our entrees were right behind them!! Trish did not seem swamped. Other tables seemed to get a steady pace of service. We did notice that pizzas were coming out a lot quicker than dinners. THREE HOURS from start to finish. RIDICULOUS!! No manager or any one came along to see if everything was Ok. Went to Palermo's for lunch on Weds., with 2 of my friends who have never been there. Ann was our waitress, she was nice. We ordered Cappalinni Christina, I took my first bite, and there was a piece of wood in my pasta, about 1 1/2 inches. I called the waitress over and showed her, she had a new one made for me, and took it off bill, how does a piece of wood get in pasta? She said they use wooden spoons to stir the pasta, it must of broke off. Then the next day I go to pay my credit card, and they double billed me. So I got charged double. I went to Palermo's on 95th to celebrate 2 people's. I am not sure why the service I experience yesterday was the complete opposite of the service I have received in the past. The hostess spent too much time on her cellular phone rather than help patrons to their tables. They only had 2 high chairs available. The other high chairs they had were broken. I ordered the Chicken Marsala and it was extremely watery and it had a odd taste. I know business are short staffed however the prices didn't much the customer service. We tried to book Palermo's for our rehearsal dinner the night before our wedding and we've had no luck. Literally, no one from Palermo's will return our calls or give us the time of day. They host banquets, as outlined on their website, and I know they have availability on our date because someone responded quickly to an info request on their site. However, once we ate here and decided we wanted to book, nothing. The food is actually not bad. We enjoyed our meal here and would have come back if we ever had occasion to be in the area (which we don't, really, so I guess we'd never come back). Honestly, I can't even continue this review. I'm too irritated that they run their business so poorly. We're willing to give you a ton of money to hose 50+ out-of-towners at your restaurant for a banquet and you won't even let us! Unbelievable. I'm kind of glad they didn't take our money for a deposit. If their pre-booking service is any indication of their regular customer service, they may take a deposit and never call you back again. How are you supposed to plan anything that way? I'd pass on Palermo's if you're in the area, for whatever reason. Go to Louie's Chophouse. Didn't eat there, my rating is based on customer service. I called and ordered a gluten-free pizza along with a regular pizza. I asked if they delivered to my address. They said yes. On our way out of Chicago we wanted one last deep dish pie to remember. We tried a local Lou Malnati's, but they didn't have any dine-in options (another wtf moment). Sooo the closest option was Palermo's. We ordered a Chicago style pepperoni deep dish pizza and a salad. The ONLY times we saw our server was when she took our order and brought out the salad and then 45 minutes later when the pie came out. Seriously. Thank god for the guy who came around to refill water glasses, or we'd have been screwed. It took FOR-EVER to get our bill and then get it paid. And the pizza? Freaking gross. The crust was super soft, pushing on mushy in the middle. I didn't find a pepperoni on my first slice until halfway through the slice. The whole thing was just a huge disappointment. With all the incredible deep dish options in Chicago, I was SO bummed that this had to be my last experience before hopping a plane home. Ugh. Just don't come here. read more

Go at an off-hour or get takeout . . . or just go to a better restaurant, like Vito & Nick's or the Palermo's on 63rd St. Example of bad service: You'll note that Yelp says they take reservations. They'll tell you that too, if you call and ask to make a reservation. Last time we did this, we arrived on time to a crowded restaurant. The 300 lb. hostess told us to take a seat in the waiting area, where there were no available seats. I asked how long we should expect to wait, as there are a few other perfectly good alternatives nearby. She said 30-40 minutes. I reminded her that we were on time for our reservation. She confirmed this fact and even admitted that she was the person who took the call, but then "explained" that they don't really honor reservations. This is my favorite place to grab a pizza while in Chicago. We ordered a large sausage, mushroom and onion, it was plenty for the two of us. This is an update. I went there yesterday for my birthday and the experience was AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First it took about 8 minutes for the three of us to get water. I ordered a Manhattan, which was on the menu. It was pretty bad, but I drank it cause I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. We order baked claims, which I used to love. They were very dull, just nothing special or tasty about them but they were probably the best thing about our dining experience. Next I ordered an Old Fashion, Good Gawd all mighty did it suck. Maybe places like Untitled have spoiled me to this drink, but this was awful. I told the waiter that it was bad and I would just have a jack and coke. Next the soup comes out and the waiter says, this is very hot be careful. My sister takes a sip of the soup and has this funny look on her face. She finally says, did anyone else try the soup, mine isn't hot. Her husband tries it and goes yeah it is not good. I tried it and it was luke warm. The best way to describe it is that it was hot they left it out for hours to cool down and it did. But we eat the soup and don't say anything. Now the meal comes... I ordered grilled swordfish, which was okay not bad but not good. It was dull and just kind of tasteless. It came with escarole and pasta. The "escarole" was basically tomatoes and little tiny winy slivers of "escarole" and was okay but I didn't want that do I didn't really eat that much of it. My sister ordered cavatelli (which is what she always orders there) and after taking two bites of it said this doesn't taste right. She said the cavatelli is okay but the sauce (gravy for all the Italians that will start a sauce/gravy fight) wasn't the same. So I tried the plate of pasta that I had and I agreed the sauce was bland, not the sweet sauce we were used to. Her husband (my brother in law-for those of you keep score at home) said his gnocchi in alfredo sauce was pretty bad, I think he said the alfredo sauce was awful. Somewhere in this debauchery, my sister gets up to go to the bathroom, what she really did was ask the waiter/hostess bring us some tiramisu with a candle and to not ask us for desert, cause it was my b-day (thanks!). So after dinner the waiter comes over and asks us for dessert, I say not so does everyone else. So check comes, we pay, didn't tip well cause the service was VERY slow, we had to ask 3 times for water. And left, it wasn't till after I found out about dessert. I don't know what happened to this place. The food and service used to be very good, as you can see by my above post. But after this experience I will never go back. I don't know if there was a change in owners or cook or what but this entire experience was awful. So I am changing my previous 4 stars to 1. read more

Went here for a birthday dinner. I was not overly impressed. With respect to the prices...I can't really say that they are "over priced" because the portions are huge and included soup or salad, and of course unlimited bread. And when I say huge portions, I'm talking I ate till I was full, plus enough leftover for two additional meals. But quantity doesn't mean it's good, just means there is a lot on the plate. There were a lot of different meals ordered that night, I can only speak regarding mine - the vodka pasta - I thought it was lacking flavor - I was craving some parmesan bad, but was so hungry by the time the food arrived (order took forever to arrive) that I just kept eating and didn't ask for anyone to pass the cheese. The place itself was crazy packed, the parking lot was insane!! Our waitress was nice enough, but I can tell she was getting annoyed with our table by the number of comments she was making because some of the kids at our table had spilled their drinks - shit happens, deal with it - I DID! I was more annoyed at the comments she was making than with the accidental spills - if that's the case, the restaurant should really consider investing in kids cups like many other reputable restaurants do. This place is way, way out of my neighborhood for me to return - a little too chaotic, and for ho-hum food, I will stick to Italian restaurants a little closer to home. read more

Strictly a pizza review. I'm kinda thinking Oak Lawn is the capital of sweet pizza sauces. With Grassano's and Palermo's containing some of the sweetest pizza sauces I've ever had. And to be honest, I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. I guess you have to have a taste for it. Don't get me wrong, it's good stuff. But from a personal standpoint, despite how the locals rave about this place, I've had much better pies within the area and outside of it. This is a nice, longtime, family-owned Italian restaurant with a cozy, pleasant atmosphere even when it's crowded. It's probably one of the last places in the Oak Lawn area that could be labeled traditional, "upscale" dining (meaning it isn't a chain, the servers wear traditional black and white and carry themselves like professionals, the patrons are generally well behaved and don't act like a bunch of sailors on shore leave, and there are no TVs in the dining room). I've never had any of the pastas or meat entrees, though I'm always tempted to try one. Many people still think of it as basically a pizzeria, but the menu looks like it strives to be taken seriously, and sooner or later I'll have to try one of the many veal or pasta dishes. When I do, I hope it's as good as the pizza. I come here for the traditional Chicago-style thin-crust, square-cut real deal. It's always delicious, consistent, well-executed, and high-quality. The crust, sausage, sauce, and cheese are all first-rate, though I think the mushrooms are canned, which some might consider a no-no (though I've never been sure that fresh mushrooms work well on pizza unless they've been sauteed first). The "thin and crispy" crust really stayed like a cracker despite the load of sausage, mushrooms, and extra cheese I specified. Good fried calamari appetizer (not too heavily breaded), decent drinks and wine list. I also appreciate that the owner apparently reads these reviews and learns about it when people have a bad experience. That should happen more often on Yelp. read more

I had high expectations for a night out of dining at Palermo's, and that experience fell short by a landslide. First off this place is not running on all cylinders. I had reservations with them, which yielded to waiting 30 minutes for a table. When leaving the Valet guy was lost for 15minutes. The restaurants online menu has lower prices than the real prices of their menu. The restaurant has a great warm inviting feel, and that was really the highlight of dining with them. Having that said this place is a dump. The dishes we all ordered were either, nothing to talk about, gross, or just "blah". Palermo's is a dying breed. These old school Italian saucy sauce places still exist around the city and some have maintained a hardcore following. But as a younger guy, this type of restaurant no longer satisfies my Italian craving. Heavy red sauce just doesn't do it for me anymore. To me, that's home cooking during the cold winter months. When I dine out, I prefer a lighter sauce with herbs and fresh flavors. Something from the garden done well. On our latest trip we went with thin crust pizzas. I didn't care much for the crust as it had an almost graham cracker taste. The sauce was light on flavor and the pizza wasn't very memorable. Palermo's is known for their pizza so I was expecting a bit more. The free bread given was tasty while the calamari was average among what I've had. Palermo's will remain as a restaurant to take my parents. It makes them happy and therefore makes me happy to visit with them. For personal dining, I'll be heading elsewhere. read more

We came to their banquet area for a luncheon on a Saturday. The room is appropriate for a small party (50 or less, I'd guess). They staffed it well so that we weren't waiting too long for food. There was a bar open for our event, and when the bartender wasn't busy, she was helping to serve too. All of my nieces and nephews kept her busy with their Kiddie Cocktail orders, we definitely used up a good portion of their grenadine! The food at our luncheon was fantastic! The salad was the only lackluster portion of the meal. We had chicken noodle soup, pasta, chicken, veggies, Italian sausage and pizza for our lunch. The sausage had a nice char on it, and was excellent! The pizza was also fantastic, and tasted just as good cold later that day, and reheated day two! I would definitely come back just for pizza! I worked here for a couple of years so I've eaten this amazing pizza consistently. Well it's been a couple years since I've had any and I just had to get some after getting off the plane. Pretty disappointed. I don't mind paying a higher price for a better pizza, but yesterday's was kind of a bummer. The thin and crispy crust was still delicious but there was barely any sauce. I mean to the point where we offered to buy a side of sauce so we could reheat and eat it the next day. The waitress said NO. A flat out NO to purchasing some sauce to go on our dry pizza. Aside from that, she was really nice. But to not be happy (or have a solution) for a pizza that was nearly $40 is just poor customer service. The other thing that I thought was weird was the over-abundance of toppings. It was never like that before. We ordered a few toppings but our pizza showed up with nearly golf ball sized sausage covering the entire thing. If you like sausage, then this is for you, but it was too the point where we couldn't taste any other ingredients...and the lack of sauce didn't help. I haven't been to Palermos in a long time so I took my fiancé there yesterday evening. Walked in and got a seat right away. Then it took over five minutes to get water. I get my water glass and its covered in lipstick. We sat there at least another few minutes before we got bread and I want to say a total of 15 minutes from when we sat down to when we finally ordered. Fearing that since if took so long for the waitress to even take our order, we ordered our appetizers and pizza right away as well as our drinks. We did not receive our drinks until our appetizers came. We ordered the onion rings and the brociole to start. The onion rings were frozen not fresh, which was a letdown(picture of the onion rings in the photos section). The brociole was decent. I would also like to note that if I'm sitting down in a decent restaurant and spending at least $20 per person per entree, I would like a glass for my beer. I ordered one more beer when we finished the entrees and I did not receive it until after our pizza came. The pizza was the only saving grace for the evening. I will not go back to dine in and I will only order the pizza to go. The pizza was the only thing keeping this review from getting 1 star. read more

If I could give this place no stars I would. We just left this venue after having a luncheon after burying our grandma. First off, they didn't know how to accommodate people ever when we call at the church letting them know we have x-amount of people. We get there and the 4 tables that were suppose to be reserved for family were not. There were actually 2 tables and the signs get taken down and of course no one at the venue enforces it or even asks until everyone is there. When they finally find a way to seat everyone. It took one and a half hours to even get to the soup course. We got there at 1:30ish mind you. After two servings of bread and butter for the table and a soup. We wait another half hour just to get salad PLATES. with no salad. After salad took another 15 minutes to even get the main course. The food was very bland over all. Who ever was Bartending seemed to be a manager of some sort, but barely giving a shot in an $8 drink is ridiculous. Most of the servers were very rude and inconsiderate of the reason we were there. It took forever to get any food and they rush trying to clear plates. It's like, come on!! After being there for almost 3+ hours of course everyone was trying to leave and go home after a long weekend grieving. As more than half our party was leaving ... THEN they decide to tell people that they still had Italian ice to serve. Then after clearing the tables a server had dropped some food and LEFT IT THERE. I cleaned it up only cuz we had a lot of elderly and physically limited family and guests walking around and wouldn't want them to slip and fall. Seriously, worst service and accommodations I've ever seen. Lack of attention, empathy, and professionalism. It should not have been over 3 and a half hours to have a luncheon. One time we waited over 25 minutes for the waitress to even acknowledge us I wanted to leave but I didn't want to ruin my children's night. Biggest $4.50 for a glass of beer that's half warm. I've been to Gibsons in Oakbrook where they don't even charge that amount $2 to $2.50 sounds much better for a pizza bar . Get ready to wait for a table! Even if you make reservations, you will not be seated for at least 30 minutes after you arrive (even though there are cleared tables ready for customers in the dining room). The hostesses are usually high school aged and don't have experience handing complaints. The seating manager (I think) is rude and seems overwhelmed. She has a lot of excuses for the wait, but none are acceptable. After getting seated, the service is slow and you'll have to wait too long for you waiter or waitress to take your order. Water is hard to come by at this restaurant. The wait staff seem overworked and busy. The food is okay. Nothing too special. It's not bad, but not great either. The pizza, however, is pretty good. The pizza is the reason I gave 2 stars not one. We had our rehearsal dinner at Palermos. My husband arranged the entire event and found out how much it was going to cost. We never expected the price on the final bill (and we didn't even have that many drinks). There were many hidden costs such as a fee for cooking the pizzas! Who has ever heard of that? My in-laws happily paid the bill that night, but later reported that it was way more than they expected. In general, I am very disappointed in Palermos recently. My husband and I had our first date there and now, after having 3 distinct horrible experiences there, I don't want to go back. I remember their service being better than it has been lately. KEEP IT SIMPLE--You may want to think twice before ordering a large carry-out order! Recently we ordered about 15 items for carry-out from this location. Most of them were dinners, with a few appetizers and salads thrown in. We were told it would talk about an hour to and hour and fifteen for the order to arrive. Once the order arrived, and AFTER the delivery person left, we opened the bags only to discover that they delivered only half our order. We immediately phoned the restaurant, who then had to track down the delivery person who...actually forgot to give us the one of the large bags they had sent him to deliver. Ten minutes later, delivery person arrives and says.... "here's the rest". Well...as luck would have it our carry-out adventure wasn't over yet. Unfortunately the delivery person left before we had a chance to open the bag to double check to make sure everything was there and wouldn't you know it... they left out an item! We immediately called Palermo's back to inform them of their latest screw up. They put us on hold, and phoned the driver who informed them that he didn't have anything else in his car. They admitted the error and and they said they'd have the item "right over to us". So we're thinking that since we're less than 15 minutes away from the restaurant and it was only a sandwich that by the time the delivery guy got back to the restaurant, the sandwich would be ready and he could shoot back over, right? We're thinking...at most the sandwich should be in our hands in about 30 minutes tops. 30 minutes go by. No sandwich. 45 minutes go by. Still no sandwich. So again, we got on the phone with Palermo's to tell them to cancel the order. We were tired of waiting, had already finished eating, and quite frankly, had lost our appetite for their darn sandwich. The first person we talked to barely apologized for their goof up and didn't even offer to take it off our bill. We then escalated it to the manager on duty at the time who agreed to credit us towards another order. That's not really what we wanted though as it's not our intention to order from Palermo's again. The lesson here is If you decide to chance a large order for delivery, make sure you double check everything before the delivery person leaves your house. read more

If you're near Oak Lawn or on the south side of Chicago and are craving Italian food, make a stop at Palermo's. I've been going to Palermo's for about 7 years and I'm sad I don't go to school on the south side anymore because I don't go here as often as I would like. The decor is very classic Italian and simple. Paper line each table for convenience and efficiency for cleaning. Palermo's is a restaurant for the young, the old and the in between and that's exactly who you see when you dine here. It's definitely a family restaurant, as well as a place you can feel comfortable taking a date. The waitresses are pleasant and high school bus boys (from Brother Rice?) work very hard cleaning tables. I enjoy the pitcher of water that is placed on the table when you first sit down. The restaurant can get quite busy and with a pitcher of water, you don't have to hail down a waitress or bus boy. The complimentary bread is some of the best I have had at an Italian restaurant. It's WARM first of all, and they give you an entire jar of Parmesan and a bottle of olive oil for dipping. I always like a lot of Parmesan and olive oil and at Palermo's I can use as much as I want without a waiter looking at me like I have been deprived of Parmesan and olive oil my whole life. Now, there is something about the pizza at Palermo's and I think it's the sauce. The sauce is unlike any other. It's both sweet and savory; it's a perfect balance. I believe that it is the sauce that makes the pizzas here DELICIOUS! The pastas are great as well. The tortellini is scrumptious; all pastas come in big portions and you also get a choice of soup or salad with entrees. The minestrone is great; although I have never experienced a bad minestrone. For dessert, the Pizelle al Gelato is a must try. A generous portion of wafer cookies, fresh cut strawberries, vanilla gelato drizzled with berry liqueur is to die for. Honestly, I am not a dessert person and normally don't order dessert, but I usually order this. The only downsides are that it can be very busy and noisy on the weekends with large families/groups and lots of teenagers. First time eating in at this Palermo's. I had a very pleasant experience - no complaints. Lots of hustle and bustle with both customers and employees...to be expected on a Saturday evening during the holiday season. I went with the eggplant rollatini - loved them! 4 rolls...or was it 3? Gah! Pardon me for lack of remembering. In either case, I enjoyed the dish. Family friend had a fairly large dish of pasta with vegetables and shrimp, he enjoyed his dish as well. I really like getting food from here. I've never eaten in here, but have always received carry out from here. While their carry-out menu is smaller, if you ask nicely, they'll pack up your favorite entree for you! I really love their stuffed peppers here. MMM!!! This used to be one of the best pizza places around. But the pizza has been really sub-par lately. I've dined in the restaurant as well, and again, have had good experiences in the past, but not in the past couple of years. I've attended two or three parties in the banquet hall, each time being severely disappointed: cramped spaces, no parking, food not consistent with the restaurant, etc. etc. etc. And just as an extra, this is a horrible place for kids and families to go to. It's simply not kid friendly. The decor inside is dated as well, so you'll feel like you're in your grandma's restaurant. Sum up? This is the south side. There are other places to go to. If you're ever in the area, you must go to Palermo's. I'd definitely recommend making a reservation, even though it seems like you have to wait anyway (but not as long). That's the one complaint I have about Palermo's: they are not efficient in seating people at all (hence 4 stars). We always stare into the dining room, and there are always a bunch of open tables. Not fun when you're hungry. I think they like making people wait. I had the chicken scaloppini during my last trip, and it was absolutely delicious! Mushrooms, cream sauce, mmm... Their thin crust pizza (which is what I order every other time) is the best in the Chicagoland area. We love pizza and have tried a lot of pizza, but their pizza is absolutely the best. The pizza comes out elevated on a rack, so it stays crispy the entire time. Their sauce is sweet and delicious! Perfect amount of cheese and toppings! Don't take any substitutes, the Red Ivy in Wrigleyville does not serve the same pizza. I believe the two owners are relatives, but the Palermo's pizza can't be duplicated, no matter how hard they try. Red Ivy pizza is OK for north side thin crust, but it has more sauce and cheese than the original perfect Palermo's. read more
