Vito & Nick's Pizzeria offers maybe the BEST example of Chicago's "Tavern Style" Pizza in the country. The city of Chicago itself has FOUR main catagories of pizza styles that were invented Here:... 1): Deep-Dish - This has a thick crust & lots of toppings. 2). Stuffed - This is 'double-decker pizza where the toppings are laid atop the bottom dough along with pounds of grated cheese, and then another sheet of dough is placed on top to which is added many ladles of tangy pizza sauce. Suffed Pizza usually take about 45 minutes to bake. 3). Tavern Style - This is a Thin-Crust Pizza that became popular in Chicago's Southside neighborhoods long before Deep-Dish or Suffed Pizza ever saw a mouth. It was created for the men who work in the 'Stock Yards' butchering cows. After a long day these workers would often go to their local tavern to have a beer and maybe a snack (if the tavern actually had any snacks. Then, eventually ONE Tavern caught on, that if they offered a Snack, the men drinking would always order another beer. So they began making inexpensive, thin-crust pizza (not to sell but to give-away as a promotion. And to make it easier to both snack and drink at same time, the tavern cut the pizza in straight lines, east to west, and north to south. Then they just passed the pizza down the bar and everbody took a square, (you can tell a lot about a person from watching which slices they choose: the gooey soft inner squares full of melted cheese and sauce-oil; - the rectangular edge pieces with a center that's gooey and a crunchy crust-edge; - and finally, the "Runt" of the "Zaa", the little, dry, triangular pieces (I cannot call in "a slice", because... a slice of WHAT?!?) . It was our first time at Vito and Nicks. 40-45 minutes each way. I get that it's a one-hundred plus year old place, but something smells foul in the restaurant. It's not overpowering, but the odor is in the atmosphere along with the smell of the pizza oven - a combination of a musty old carpet, damp old rags, a urinal, and bread baking. The service was attentive and the server was nice enough. Now for the iconic pizza. We had a large half sausage and half Italian beef with mild giardiniera. We enjoyed the sausage half more than the beef half. Overall the pizza was good, but it's not something I'd drive 40+ minutes each to have again. If V&N's was located in my neighborhood, they'd would probably join my pizza rotation. I enjoyed their crispy crust, but didn't love their sauce. The sausage was good. I visited the South Side with family and wanted to try out Vito and Nick's for years. I finally got the opportunity to go a few weeks ago. I absolutely love their tavern style pizza! The cracker thin crust complements the thin layer of cheese and toppings. They've been doing this for decades so they have their pizza and entrees down packed. This is definitely a neighborhood joint with an extremely popular rep with locals and tourists. 3 stars is ok in Yelp land, and that is the most Vito & Nick's Pizzeria deserves. Arrived 4:40 pm Monday afternoon. Reasonably pleasant waitress gave us estimate of 30 minutes for a large pizza. Right on the button, though it's not clear to me why it should take so long to bake a very thin crust pie when there are 20+ people in the dining room. The pizza was mediocre at best. If you like cracker-style crust, that helps. However, the sauce had little flavor to it and modest amount of cheese. Dining room tables are very close together; we could move around them ok, but when the joint is rockin' and full, it's very tight. We had to try the pizza but the sandwiches and some dinners are very reasonably priced. Extremely small bathrooms. Definitely recommend waiting a few minutes when it hits the table. Cheddar jalapeño poppers and mushrooms are classic and served with both ranch and marinara. Both Pizzas were delish! The cracker crust was crispy and the perfect vehicle for cheese and toppings. Cut into squares, easily shared: literally we ate and left no crumb. I think the sausage was my favorite and I would order it again with the peppers and onions. The giardiniera was not as hot as we would've liked, and I think I rather have it fresh than baked to keep that crisp texture. Staff were polite and on point. There was a line of people waiting for tables when we arrived, and a woman instructed me to go to the front of the line to sign in. We decided on our pizza, and ordered when the drinks arrived. Wine is a generous pour for the $9.50 charge. The pizza came, was delicious as always. I took a friend that had never had tavern style pizza and we tried this place since I had never been and heard so many great things about it. The place was pretty empty when we went around lunch on a weekend. What was immediately alarming was the carpeted ceiling, it seemed like a hazard waiting not to mention a petri dish for mold and bacteria. The ambiance didn't seemed to have changed since the place first opened. We dismissed it and decided to stay and order, a cheese pizza with giardiniera and half sausage. As we waited, we observed one of the cooks continously scratching his hair and backside thru the opening to the kitchen. He then kept coming to the front to get soft drinks from the fountain drinking in plain site of the customers. This was extremely off putting. Well this certainly isn't an unknown gem, but after a visit to the zoo on the 4th of July it is one of the places we could confirm would be open. Since it's the kind of holiday most people would be at a house party or festival, we were able to get a table with no hassle, and get the closest parking spot to the door to boot. My wife was a bit unsure when she originally ordered a Diet Coke, and the waitress kindly offered to take back our Diet RCs if we didn't like them, but they were fine. We started with the fried mushrooms, which we really enjoyed because the breading was well seasoned and the shrooms weren't overbreaded. Then the star of the show - a large sausage pizza. I firmly believe the hype is worth is. The crust is thin and crispy, the edges are ever so slightly caramelized, and the ratio of toppings is spot on. Not so much cheese that it's sliding off slices as you grab them, but still enough to enjoy, and a bit of sausage on almost every piece. Also I love how small they cut the square slices, almost to the point where you can eat it a slice at a time. Makes it easy to feed our toddler, and you don't feel like you're overcommitting when you feel like just one more piece. Since the crust is perfectly cut it's satisfying to pull apart the pieces with ease and not having to try and separate soft bread.
