I've been going here for the past 6 months, at first I didn't expect much because the location is kind of in a shady little market place, but now I've learned that the best stuff is always hidden. And what can I say, it is by far the best Mexican ice cream I've had in all North San Diego County, the Lime flavor is so awesome that I keep going back at least once a week. After going a while I noticed that they sell tortas, one of the customers was eating one massive gigantic torta so by next time I bought one "La Señorita" it is soooooooo delicious and has a peculiar taste that you can't find anywhere else so you keep going back, or at least I am. I have come here on a couple of occasions and while this is a busy parking lot and shopping center on S. Santa Fe Ave, I will still come here because they have good chamangos! I have tried their icy chamango, mango ice cream chamango, tostimangos, and tostilocos. Are the tostilocos as good as the Tijuana ones? I don't really think so, but they are just fine. Do try the mango ice cream chamango though, I personally consider it my favorite thing to get here, especially on a hot day. This is a fairly small place but they have many things on their menu including tortas. Still, I would stick to their ice cream or other treats vs. the food. The girls that were working were courteous and not to mention generous in their preparation of the chamangos, so really love that. read more

*IMPORTANT LOCATION NOTE: Just as a heads up, (current as of June 28) do NOT trust the Google map app on Yelp to tell you where to find this place. I just noticed the marker is way off and nowhere near the actual location, and I'm not sure why, since the street address given is correct. Easy fix though: simply enter the address (1110 N Santa Fe...) into Google search (not Yelp) and it'll show you the proper location. The location marker for Oscar's Mexican Food (awaiting review) is also off, but only by a little (it's shown on the other side of the street that it's on). I really hope this is just a bug and not something of a problem with many other Yelp listings.* So it seems like I finally got the satisfaction of a well-made torta today at this place after my previous experience with Filiberto's the day before. If you just want the bottom line, here's the TL; DR version: delicious torta hawayana for $7! Also wide selection of good Mexican ice cream too. And now for the details. I came here to eat after having returned from Tijuana with my aunt and grandparents--instead of having eaten there. haha shows how much I don't want to get food poisoning after the last time I went abroad. I've been to this place before for Mexican ice cream and have never been disappointed. The owners of the place are from the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca (they have a map of the region on the wall/counter for anyone interested enough to take a gander) and have their own style of cooking. Their selection of ice cream is impressive, even for a Latino ice cream shop. Flavors include the usual American staples as well as mango, arroz con leche, coconut, guanabana, lime, and even chamo, among others. I honestly prefer this to Italian gelato. They've got nothing on paletas! I can't speak for the rest, but the Mexican ice creams (mainly the packaged ice cream bars) don't seem to melt as fast as your typical ice cream either, which is a plus on a hot day when you're not near the comfort of a fan/temperature-controlled room. As for today, I ordered a Hawaiian style torta (???) because it was the only one out of about 8 that didn't have three different kinds of meat in it. (Others had various combinations of chorizo, chicken, steak, breaded steak, carnitas, etc.) There is only one cash register in the place, and the place is shallow in depth, only wide in width, meaning there was a line extending to the front of the store and bending along the front glass wall. This place is adequate but probably not the best to eat inside if you're with friends, as there's a chance seats may run out in the limited space. Besides, there's not a lot going on inside, though there is a TV with the (Spanish-language) news on. Luckily the line progressed quickly, and one thing I noticed is that they don't give you your receipt after you order; they simply leave the receipt after it rolls out from the printer, resulting in a long ribbon of receipts of everyone's orders. I guess most of their customers didn't care since they were mostly ordering ice cream, and maybe because they were pretty confident about the quality of their order to not need to keep their receipt for reference. Also, if something is wrong, all one needs to do is say so and the employees seem to address and correct it immediately without asking for a receipt, as was the case for my grandmother's order of tostilocos--a real treat of jicama fruit shavings, other fruit, and chicharrones with chamoy sauce in a bag. My order took a while to prepare as there was only one employee on the stove making other people's orders as well, but I was patient. The product, a hefty and beautiful culinary that tasted as good as it looked. The masterpiece: Bolillo (french-style white bread), tomato, lettuce, mayo, avocado, ham and pineapple--hey, I wanted a good torta that was complete, not necessarily authentic/native, and as for the beans, I was okay with their absence. I came back home to eat it and it was definitely worth every penny. I'll gladly fork over the extra dough for this treat that I'd say was almost twice as heavy as the one from Filiberto's. Ever since I can remember I have always come to this place. The ice cream and snacks are great. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 and not a 5 is because every time I go the tables are dirty, the trash is full and the floors are dirty. There is no air conditioning so it's always hot. As far as the food, the ice cream and popsicles are great. I love the pineapple popsicle and the tostilocos. My daughter always has the lime ice cream and the tacos. read more

We go to this location all the time , have told friend, coworkers and my customers to visit this location but today i got very upset. I sent my coworker to go and order me some tostilocos with hotcheetos and every time we go NO cuerito what so ever since I'm allergic . Since we work around the corner from this location when I saw my order was wrong I went nicely and told them that I can't eat if and if they could change it , but instead the lady inits and tells me I told her if she wanted everything and she said yes when she didn't . Throwing away 6.00 to the trash is not okay , I'm not one to be like customers always right,but this was nonsense . I didn't even touch the food and went right away when i saw it had something I did NOT WANT !! I have worked in restaurants before and even as a Manager , I would want someone to come back even if i know the order wasn't correct to change it , it takes less than 3 minutes of your time , and could have told me hold on let me talk to my manager or who ever is in charge , but no she just didn't want to . A coworker of mine got me my first chamango couple of years ago from a food truck up in Orange County, I was hook. I discovered this place because I was looking for a place nearby I can get some chamango, but now I came here for more than just that. Their ice cream bar is awesome, we bought a dozen every week, fresh and refreshing, especially during those hot summer days... Finally tried the banana split the other day and it's awesome as well. There are a ton of Mexi-ice places in Vista and North County, but La Mixteca blows them all out of the water. First, their ices (non-milk, similar to Italian gelato) are just incredible. Nothing is artificially flavored. The sandia ice is made with fresh watermelon. The fresa is made with fresh strawberries, melon with cantaloupe, etc. You can see the workers making all the wonderful creations in the back and chopping up the fresh fruit. Second, the variety of flavors is just awesome. You've got everything from tuna (prickly pear) to arroz con leche (rice pudding) to guanabana (soursop) and mango chili. I've tried everything and haven't found a flavor I didn't like. Additionally, you've got the more traditional ice creams (with milk), many of the ice flavors in ice pop form, all the yummy spicy Mexican treats like chamoyada and so on. Every time we go, the people give us 4 scoops and charge us for 2. They heap it on. On the food side of the store, the highlight is the tortas. I've had them many places and these are the best. You will most definitely find the best traditional Mexican/Oaxacan paletas here. They have so many flavors from bubble gum to lime flavor. My favorites is the arroz con leche and another called mame which is a typical fruit from Mexico. For some reason I always forget the name. Pricing is not bad and they have other options here than ice cream. They have fruit bar and I love to get the chamangos here, perfect for a hot day. The last time we were there it was only 9pm and they close at 9:30. The girl there started mopping moving chairs making as much noise with those chairs as she could as to pretty much telling us to hurry up and leave. At one point she was next to us mopping near our feet. We would try to make eye contact with her as to tell her to back away but she never looked up as she knew what she was trying to do. And this was also our second time with same experience. I'm a pretty calm person but if there is ever a next time that I step foot in this place and same thing happens she'll be hearing me out. If i could i wouldn't even give them a star! The staff is very rude, costumer service sucks starting with the cashiers and ending with the cooks! One time i went and i ordered tacos and i found a huge hair on my meat, i told the cashier a tall Mexican skinny guy and he said he couldn't do anything about it. The next time i went i ordered tacos and the meat was not cooked right. i was able to see the red blood coming out of the meat. i told the the cook and he said it was fine like that instead of making me a new plate! I went again 2 weeks later and the lady cashier messed up my order so when she repeated the order to me it was all wrong and i told her i didn't want that and she said she already put the order in and that i needed to pay for it. i told her to cancel my order and she said she didn't know how to that i needed to go behind the cash register and do it my self. I went 1 week later and got tacos and they ran out of green sauce, and i told the tall Mexican skinny light skin guy that if they had more and he told me to go behind the kitchen and look for it in the back fridge. I told him that wasn't my job, that i was not getting paid that he was and he said fine ill check. So when he came out he said there was no more salsa and that he wasnt going to make anymore. So i went today and i ordered 4 tacos and a "señorita torta" the cashier put in the order of 10 tacos and in top of that the cook fucked up my torta and when i told him he gave me the wrong one he got mad and gave me attitude and said, "i had already bit it that he couldn't do nothing about it!" so here Iam writing this review and i hope they get different employees because the ones they have suck ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
