Its been a while since I have come in ot Panaderia Ortiz. I was in the niehborhood and decided to stop on in. Th first thing that came to my mind was a sweey corn tamale and a champoorado. Walked and saw all the pan dulce and knew I couldn't leave without taking some home with me. Fists thing first, the sweet corn tamale. It was not what I had expected. It was very bland lacking flavor and tasted loke a lump of masa, dough. Champoorado was also lacking chocolate flavor as its the flavor the lady told me it was and I expected to get a hint of chocolate however it was not existent. Purchased some pan dulce and I know the bread is always fresh and delicious. They have a wide veriety of pandulce to pair with coffee or other drinks too. read more

The staff and so responsive and understanding. We had an issue with our cake (totally our fault and an honest mistake) and the bakery called someone to come back in and help us out at no extra cost. I go here all the time and try something different each time. So far, so good. My favorite however is the Tres Leches and the Flan. I like the Flan so much, I got the whole flan that's a pretty decent size for about 6-8 people to enjoy. You can just ask them for one and they'll bring out a fresh batch, yumm. I also like the tamales. And the best part, the prices are great!! Don't forget to stop by here when you crave something sweet or something savory! A great place for snacking! read more

What's not to love about - Panaderia Ortiz? Great assortment of muffins, tamales, empanadas and a whole lot of Mexican bread. And it's so damn affordable. Honestly I was surprised at the prices. Definitely pleasant one. You can just try one of each variety and you won't be disappointed. A few mentions: Banana nut bread is a bomb - just the right amount of sugar and butter. No heavy overdose like regular bakeries. Somehow it feels healthy... I know funny right? But try it and you will understand. Chocolate muffins are super soft, chocolaty and huge. I just had a very bad experience ordering a cake from my favorite place for Tres Leches. Panderia Ortiz in Seven Trees I am so disappointed . I told them I don't speak Spanish that well is there someone that can help me in English because they answered in Spanish. They pass the phone to some other lady that cussed me out in perfect English and hung up the phone on me. I called back to explain that I just wanted to order a cake and they did it a 2nd time. I know if they did actually take my order who knows what they would've done to the cake. I would love to speak to the owners if I had a chance because the employees don't realize how good of a business they work for to just ruin it with ignorance. This place has the best tamales in San Jose. I love the pork tamales! Get them prepared with verde sauce. This place is a little gem that you cannot miss out on if you are new or visiting SJ. First of all I wanna say the bread is good can't complain but I do want to complain about these 2 women whispering stuff under there breath whenever I spoke Spanish. My Spanish isn't perfect but making fun of someone cause of it isn't right. Someone once told "el Que escupe arriba le caí el la jeta" might not have said right but I'm sure you understood just like how you understood me what kinda pan dulce I wanted. I've probably been going to this Panaderia since I was like 4 years old, I'm now 24. I refuse to try any pan dulce if it's not from here. Besides the pan dulce, I also love the tortas(Mexican sandwich). Bread always tastes fresh. They have a variety of bread, for the people who like very sweet desserts & also less sugary options. I recommend going early, on weekends they sell out fast. Lastly, the ladies who work here are so sweet and always smiling. I have been a frequent purchaser of pan dulce (sweet Mexican bread) at this bakery. I'm surprised that I haven't written a review on this place before. The bakery is right off of Capitol Expressway at Seven Trees across from Happy Donut. It's is far less caloric because the breads are baked not fried like a donut. I've had very good experiences over the last 15 years with their sweet pastries. I really like their empanadas that are filled with pineapple (pina), pumpkin (calabaza), sweet cream (crema) , guava (guayaba), or coconut (coco). Our favorite is the pineapple! We love the conchas (look like seashells), cochinitos (bread shaped like a pig), and their selection is very good. They bake bread for making tortas, have cookies, and cakes. Their tres leches is the bomb and they sell it in portions! I've heard their flan is also delicious. They sell tortas, tamales, cookies, cakes and other food items. I love their Abuelita chocolate piping hot to eat my bread with. One of the more recent items is a jalapeno bread with cheese that is spicy and yummy. If you want to have a Mexican experience stop in! Parking can be a hassle depending on what time you stop by though. Social distancing is practiced and there is hand sanitizer available. read more

(I'm kicking myself for not taking a picture of their selection case - small storefront but big selection.) I think they still do their coffee and hot chocolate in the daytime, maybe juices too. Want to gain 10 pounds in a hurry without trying? Eat pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread), or "pan" on a daily basis for more than a week. It's soooo good. Probably one of the best desserts I've ever had. They don't speak English, and my Spanish is limited to what I remember from high school Spanish classes (virtually nothing), but luckily my fingers are still able to point in various directions and I've retained how to say the numbers, "please" and "thank you"---all you really need here. The pink or yellow crescent-shaped sweet breads are the best (so are the log-shaped ones), and there's no different in taste between the pink and yellow that I can tell (but the pink ones are prettier). Now that I think about it, they aren't entirely "pink" or "yellow" but are regular beige color (like dough or bread) with pink or yellow accents/stripes (hopefully this helps if you've never been and are wanting to buy). It can get busy and the small parking lot sucks...but I'm not eating the parking lot, and once I get my pan, it's the least of my concerns. read more

I've been here before multiple times with no issue. On my last visit the woman behind the counter was rude to me because I didn't speak Spanish. Although she had a mask on I could tell by her body language she was annoyed with me. I know a few words in Spanish but not enough to hold a conversation. I attempted what I knew but she was just as annoyed. When I went to pay she started to give me dollar bills but then proceeded to put them back and give me my change back in quarters. I do not plan on returning to this bakery even though I enjoyed their bread. There are plenty of other Mexican bakeries in San Jose who treat their English speaking customers better. read more

loooooove mexican pastries. and this place has really good ones. i used to go here years ago with a friend and have recently re-discovered it. quality is still the same. they have a large selection of deliciousness to choose from. made fresh. when you go in they get out a tray and you just start picking. when you're done, they bag it up. and cost is so reasonable. you get a lot for what you pay. our favorites are the pink pastries and the apple empanadas. i will warn that on the weekends in the morning there is a big line. we're talking out the door and down the building. but it goes pretty quick. don't be worried if you don't speak spanish. it's never a problem. give it a try. you won't regret it! read more

Had my husband go for my sons birthday cake and he came with the ugliest writing on the cake that it look like a 3 year old wrote I was so mad because we were waiting on him to get of work and pick up the cake for my son and he gets home with this I went and told the lady who sold the cake if she witof paid for this cake and she said no I ask for the person who wrote in the cake and she laughed and said it looks ok for me like really I think it's unexceptionable I left my number so the owner could call me and haven't heard from them been buying bread and cakes for more than 20 Years from here and haven't returned to this panadería ever since the service is so bad read more

The ladies are nice enough and were happy to correct my spanish (politely) when I used the wrong tense/verb (always!). You do have to go early in the morning as this is a popular place. Everything is made that day. They also have specialty mexican prepackaged treats. They are fine with you not speaking English, pointing works just fine. Don't fret, the bakery is right off of Capitol Expy. so you won't have to drive deep down 7 Trees. I love how two entire wall areas of the bakery are displays of various baked goods. I care not that service preferably speaks Spanish--I come prepared with my cash and merely point to the items I want. You can use plastic here, but you have to spend at least $10 and well, you can feed a whole lot of people with $10 worth of pan. Seriously. I got like, six pieces of breakfast items and my bill was only $3.95. I felt like I scored or something. This bakery is located across from the mini plaza where 7/11 and the 24 hr. Donut shop is. Was a little upset that I come in at around 6:30am on a Saturday and was told that the champurrado won't be ready until 30 minutes later. Other than that I like this place a lot. Good customer service. Fresh squeezed orange juice tastes delicious. Their Coconut cream cheese empanadas are sweet and yummy. They had pineapple ones as well. Watermelon shortbread cookies were crispy and not crumbly. Chocolate muffins were soft and fluffy. Will come here again to try the tortas! read more

Panaderia Ortiz is where I head on special Sunday morning to pick up pan dulce. What is pan dulce you ask? It is Mexican sweet bread and Panaderia offers around thirty different varities. My favorites are their fruit filled empanadas; they offer pumpkin, apple, pineapple, and sometimes apricot. I also like the round egg shaped breads that have hardened sugar on the top. Panaderia also sells milk, sodas, fruit juices and bottled water. Get there early because Sundays are always crowded and the pickings can be slim past noon. read more
