Nina and I were working our way down this side of Main Street. After checking out various stores w/ varying degrees of success, we had a hankering for a glass of home squeezed lemonade. The weather has been in the mid 90s and due to get hotter toward the end of the week. ABC used to make it and then a year old so before it closed it switched to commercially made and I could taste the difference w/ one sip. We hadn't had homemade lemonade in Ashland since, despite a few tries. Today we were right by Pangea. We walked in and Nina asked if their lemonade was homemade. It was, so we each ordered a glass. It was rose lemonade and it was heaven in a glass. The rose flavor reminded us of the Mediterranean cooler we so loved at Pilaf and the lemonade was wonderfully tart, smack in the middle of my flavor profile. For Nina it was a little bit too tart, so she drank it slower than I did. We both used their single bathroom and I appreciated that they had a box of Kleenex in it. You don't often see that in small restaurant bathrooms. We will be back tomorrow and the next day and the next. read more

I am usually not very touchy regarding service. Grouchy waiter? I don't care so long as the food is good. But my experience here crossed a line. On a roadtrip to Southern California, I passed through Ashland OR. My hunger was all-encompassing, and my mind could think of little else but food. So when I ordered a wrap that had a vegetarian option or a chicken option, I forgot to specify. I hadn't ever been here before and simply forgot to state which of the two options I wanted. Though the menu listed both chicken and vegetarian as options, the restaurant defaulted to chicken. I am a vegetarian. As soon as I saw the chicken in the wrap, I apologized and told her I meant to select the vegetarian option (mind you, I didn't erroneously select the chicken option either. I just didn't specify and was never asked which of the two I wanted). What came next was unexpected. The server, exasperated and in a voice loud enough that neighboring tables could hear, told me "Next time you come here, it's REALLY important you let us know if you want tofu. Because now this is going to waste. I'm going to throw it away. I have to waste it." I had been scolded. As if I were a child flinging food. So a couple of things: (1) there will be no "next time" (2) it is equal part your responsibility to verify which option I want, that it is mine to specify (3) Even though I forgot to specify, you don't publicly scold a patron for an ordering mishap. My hands were shaking after she walked away, and though she brought out a vegetarian option, and though it tasted good, I just wanted to leave. I was humiliated. I had felt bad, I had apologized, and I had still been condescendingly and loudly reprimanded for a mistake shared by both parties. For the rest of the roadtrip, my boyfriend turned to me whispering "waste, waste, waste..." as if the chicken wrap was the heart beating under the floorboards of our car... In short- Food is good, but make no mistake-- you will suffer the wrath of jerk waitress. read more

We had been regulars to Pangea in the past for good wraps and delicious soup. That's basically in jeopardy after the last conversation. Called Pangea as we rolled into town to inquire about the soups on tap. We were looking for a hot treat before a family dinner. The person who answered the phone spoke so fast that she had to repeat the soups available twice. Then she made a comment that could lose a customer. "You know, you should just look up our soups on Twitter and Facebook. That way we don't have to use the phone." There is simply no excuse for that kind of customer service. Assuming that everyone is connected to Twitter or Facebook every second is a clear sign that the server is an arrogant youth that forgets that people connect in other ways than social media. Driving and Twitter don't mix, or don't the Bo Bo's at Pangea realize that some of use actually drive from point A to point B forgoing the use of alternative transportation. Needless to say we literally stopped three blocks from the restaurant and turned around. They lost a customer for a day. Whether that stays permanent is up in the air. If there is one thing that I have noticed in society lately is the lack of simple customer service. This is especially true in restaurants that consider themselves "green", "organic", or "enviro-sheik". Charging high prices (for whatever reason) and acting like you are doing us a favor doesn't make me want to shop local. It makes me want to shop the best. Right now Pangea might have good food, but they are clearly not be the best in customer service. read more

I visited Pangea yesterday and ordered the "Thrill of the Grill" which consisted of basil pesto and red pepper alouette (cheese) with artichoke hearts & balsamic-grilled Italian vegetables. I also opted to try a cup of their non-dairy coconut curried yam soup. Holy Mother of Tureen! It was heavenly, as was my wrap. ;-) Also had a taste of the Portobello Blue Cheese Soup (with cream) - very good, and of their Coconut Ginger Rice Pudding (non-dairy) - excellent! I was travelling from Eugene to Sacramento and found Pangea on Main Street in downtown Ashland. It's a fantastic little café with a friendly and helpful staff. The food creations that I tried were wonderful (my companion and I ordered two different sandwiches to split). First up was "Tangled up in Bleu": Grilled chicken in creamy bleu cheese with roasted red peppers and caramelized onions. The flavors blended well without any flavors being overpowering...just a very well balanced taste experience. If anything, I'm prejudiced by my love of stinky cheese so I could have used a bit more of the bleu. Next was the "Ranch Blues" Panini: Sriracha BBQ spiked chicken with roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, bleu-cheese and melted mozzarella. Like the "Tangled up in Bleu", the flavors all worked well together, but what set this one above the other was the wonderful taste and texture of the bread which was pressed (toasted) perfectly for a terrific crunch as I bit through the creamy melted mozzarella and the sweet and hot flavor of the Sriracha chicken. I'll be sure to make this a regular stop whenever passing through Ashland! read more

Pangea is very vegetarian friendly and has some delicious, unique menu items. I've always been happy with the quality and taste of my entree there. They offer samples of the soup, which is nice before buying a bowl. Sadly, I feel that some of their service doesn't match their quality of their food. One gentleman was very kind and helpful... while another woman made me feel uncomfortable to the point that my friend and I left early. We arrived about a half an hour before closing time, and she immediately let out heavy sighs and began loudly shuffling around sweeping and putting chairs up onto tables. She also kept asking her coworkers in a very loud and obvious manner that it was directed toward us, "WHAT TIME IS IT?" To be clear, we did not stay a minute over the closing time. In fact, we left about ten minutes before because of her rude and obnoxious behavior. I do believe people have a right to be agitated if people stay past the closing time, but rude behavior for anything before closing time is totally unacceptable in my opinion. read more

For the prices and the portions, I thought that this place was just ok. I split an order of the Mother Stuffer, which is supposed to have mozzarella, red pepper alouette, basil pesto, tomato, avocado, artichokes and spinach that's grilled on a spinach tortilla, and I was underwhelmed by its size for its price of $7.29. I also split the Bison Ranch Blues panini, which had sriracha BBQ spiked Full Circle buffalo sausage, red peppers, onions, blue cheese and mozzarella for $8.69. Someone else also ordered a bowl of their Portobello Blue Cheese Soup for $2.99. The highlight of this meal was definitely the panini. It was slightly spicy and had wonderful flavor from the sausage slices and delicious caramelized onions. The portion was better too. The Mother Stuffer was too messy; sauce was dripping out all over the place. I had only one artichoke in the entire wrap and maybe a few chunks of avocado. It was basically a spinach tortilla w/ melted mozzerella and a little bit more wilted spinach. There wasn't much flavor at all. I tried some of the soup and I thought it was really tasty. I would've eaten more but unfortunately it was not my meal so I could only mooch. I would come back for the paninis and the soups. It's a good place for a quick, healthy lunch but don't expect to leave stuffed. read more

I was on a road trip driving up from California and heading back to Portland and wanted to stop off in Ashland for lunch so we looked up a veg-friendly place and found Pangea! I ordered The Tempehst with tempeh and my boyfriend ordered The MaHarissa. They have cute names for sandwiches that are plays off of titles and other things ("The Grill from Ipanema" cracked me up). My wrap was delicious. I usually do not like wraps but I'm trying to be more low-carb and healthy. It was also very filling. When you order a wrap, it just comes ala carte - but you can pay a little extra to have it come with a salad or soup I believe.. but I certainly didn't need that. I did have a "dirty chai" latte along with my wrap so that probably also helped to fill me up, but I left full and plenty satisfied. My boyfriend also loved his wrap. I tried a bite of his and enjoyed it, although I liked mine better :) It's hard to grilled tempeh with caramelized onions and garlic aioli sauce, amongst other ingredients. We will definitely be coming back to this place when we return to Ashland to see some of the Shakespeare plays that they have going on for most of the year. I suppose the only downside is that the wraps were a little on the pricey side (I think it was $8.95?) but it was very filling and the wraps use quality ingredients (not just iceberg lettuce or some crap like that) so I didn't mind; I just wanted to mention price in case anyone was interested, since it doesn't mention price on their website. This place will also be a new favorite stop-off for other future California road trips. It is less than 10 minutes away from the I-5, and totally worth the stop if you're feeling hungry and in the mood for some delicious, healthy veg-friendly food. I'm curious to try what else they have, although The Tempehst was just so darn good that I may just stick to that. Maybe I'll get 2 sandwiches.. One for then and one for the road... :) Around Pangea, there are many cute shops to stop into as well. I don't live in oregon but each time I come I always want to come eat here! The food is very tasty and super delicious. It is also light healthy food so you don't feel heavy after eating. A great place for lunch before a matinee when you are in Ashland. I loved their Cleopatra salad and the leek-potato soup was so good I was fighting the husband for my proper share. His tempeh wrap was tasty too, fresh with a slight bite to the sauce. This isn't cheap but you feel great after eating there because everything was delicious and healthy. read more

I fell in love with Pangea when I was still a lowly tourist, and now that I live in Ashland, it's still one of my favorite places for a tasty lunch! I tend to be a little picky, but they've never messed up a custom order. My all-time favorite would have to be the "Gimme The Greek" wrap. It's stuffed with avocado, cucumber, kalamata olive, and feta cheese. So delicious! The mother stuffer is also a fabulous dish! Tourists, be aware that it's a little tricky to find. Until recently, they didn't even have a sign that was visable from the street. If memory serves correctly, it's right next to Bloomsbury Books, so keep an eye out. It really is a jewel! Also, it's tiny, so try to avoid the lunch rush by going a little earlier than noon. It can get absolutely packed in the tiny building. read more

You order at the counter and the food is delivered to your table. I had the "Eat Your Heart Out," a panini with chicken, artichoke hearts, zucchini, spinach, and house-made feta cheese. It was light, crispy (although I think it was grilled without oil), and perfect for lunch. The feta was perfectly melted and creamy without being too sharp. My folks had wraps - one veg and one with chicken - and enjoyed those very much. They have several kinds of iced tea, all of which were freshly brewed and flavorful. The goji berry cookie was basically an exotic version of oatmeal raisin and was unexceptional. This place is a great find and we'll be back next year for a light pre-show lunch. read more

Their food is so bad. I've been here several times when the cafe in the bookstore was closed but each time was worse so I just gave up and found another place. They didn't even know how to make a cappuccino and actually admitted it. We stopped here on the 4th to grab some quick food, it was perfect. I got the veggie wrap (not sautéed) on gluten free tortilla and it was AMAZING. The guy behind the counter was really friendly and was happy to tell me where I could find their GF bread and wraps. I've since bought them! I love the food here! I've never had a bad experience here. I usually get the "Eat Your Heart Out" Panini, & I substitute avocado for the chicken because I'm a Vegetarian. It's always been delicious. I wish I could say we had time to savor some of the delicious sounding soups or sample a few of the wraps, but we were in a flat out rush when we got in here. "We have a play at 1:30," I told the counter guy. "Is it even possible?" How many times must they hear that? "Oh yeah, no problem," he says, looking at the clock, which says 1:05. Long story short: three wraps in our bag in 15 minutes and we were on our way. Had time to stop and eat them in the green before heading in to the theatre and everybody seemed to enjoy what they got. My friend is in love with the Mother Stuffer tortilla panini here, she even had it for lunch right before her wedding! Sadly, I wasn't too impressed with my "Much Ado About Cheese" panini or the mushroom one I got another day-- maybe it was too healthy, maybe the weird nacho cheeseish stuff on the Much Ado turned me off...Not sure. We got takeout the first time and they forgot our soups so we had to make a special trip back there to pick them up. Mmm Pangea! They are a great choice for a nice hearty lunch. Also a good place for vegetarians. When I was a vegetarian I never had a hard time choosing a lunch here. I never did try the soups, but the paninis are awesome. Grilled perfectly and the bread doesn't tasted dried out at all. The service wasn't the best, but it's dismissible when you have such great food. If I'm ever in Ashland again I'll make sure to try their soups. Everything was fresh and flavorful, especially the borsht, which had big chunks of beets and a pretty design made out of sour cream....oh man it was so delicious, I should have gotten a whole bowl. I visit Ashland every summer for the Shakespeare Festival, and I eat at Pangea at least twice every visit. Their food is so delicious, and so good FOR you. I have a severe wheat allergy, but Pangea offers teff wraps for their gluten free patrons. (They once put my order in a regular wrap, but remade my order free of charge - and on their own accord - after they realized they'd messed up. Talk about caring staff!) This is one of my favorite places to eat, EVER. I just wish it wasn't a once-a-year treat. read more
