First, there is the matter of lack of proper hygienic procedures. The dental hygienist was coughing the entire time with her face mask around her neck. She leaned onto the table with the tools she was about to use to clean my mouth. She rested the polishing brush against her hip. It was gross. Most offensively, though, was the incessant insensitive comments. Several micro aggressions and culturally offensive comments were spewed at me as I lay in the dentist chair. The new dentures by Dr. Saggese are unusable, cannot be fixed or improved. They caused gum traumatism while used up my insurance benefit for them. Payment is a scam: I overpaid him $1450.00 that was never returned to me. According to the insurance, every overpay should be reimbursed within 2days. After almost one years of going back and forth with the useless reception, which never keeps her word, the office refused to reimburse me without explanations. I walked by they office today and remembered why I stopped going. My initial visits were amazing. They changed. I was surprised with ridiculous fees once I was on the chair (twice one was $900). Every time I visited after he always seemed to find something that needed to be done from. Always to teeth that had previously been treated in the past but he always found something to do. He realized between my insurance and out of pocket he was making good money off of me. The last straw was he determined my old fillings "were leaking". Dr. Saggese's office was under construction (I think? Or just in disrepair) when I visited, and they had to ask me to move rooms mid-cleaning when the equipment stopped working. Dr. Saggese recommended I get 3 fillings and then tried to charge me for 5 while I was still in the middle of getting my cleaning. The hygienist even recommended that I get a second opinion after he left the room, suggesting that she disagreed with him. On top of that, they've been extremely difficult in trying to send my x-rays to a new dentist. They tried to charge me $25/x-ray initially, and eventually dropped the charge but demanded it be done via mail or in person. Worst dentist experience I've ever had! UPDATE: after 2 weeks of mailing & calling, Dr. Saggese's office never sent my x-rays. My new dentist did not see a need for any fillings. It seems like Dr. Saggese was just trying to get the money. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Saggese for many years. He has made thousand of dollars both from my dental insurance, and what they charged me individually. In June I went for a six month exam, and mentioned that a tooth felt sensitive. He looked at it, and the x-ray and said I needed a root canal. He then recommended that I take a complete head shot for $175. Taking his advice, I had it done (what do I know? He's the dentist!), and the disc was given to me to take to a dentist who would do the root canal. Well the disc turned out to be completely useless. I saw three root canal dentists who all said they did not need it. They took their own x-ray only of the tooth in question. By the way, I found a good, honest old style dentist who said I did not need a root canal at all. I called Dr. Saggese's office to let him know that the head shot was not necessary, and asked for a refund to my credit card. His assistant said he was not willing to give a refund. This is a clear case of penny wise and pound foolish, or just pure greed. You would think he would have done the right thing for a long time patient. It makes me wonder what other recommendations he made that were not necessary. I trusted Dr. Saggese, and was deeply offended by the way he handled this matter. I will be looking for another dentist who does not put greed before loyalty to his long time patients. My warning is to beware of any recommendations that seem out of the ordinary. Dr Saggese is a wonderful dentist and I highly recommend him. I have a lot of anxiety when it comes to the dentist and had to get some dental work done and he was extremely patient and kind with me. I had been going to another Dentist for about a year. After a few issues I decided it was time for a change so I looked on Yelp for an alternative. Alas, I came across Dr. Saggesse who has been a pleasure to work with from the start. As someone who cares deeply about his teeth I'm very particular with the treatment I get. I'm one of those people that flosses every day and like to have that fresh clean feeling. When I came to work with Dr. Saggesse he took the time to heed my concerns and explain what he was doing and the condition of teeth. First, I want to say that this review is for a dental hygienist in Dr. Saggese's office named Judy, with whom I recently had a cleaning. Second, I want to fully acknowledge that I wasn't expecting this experience to be totally comfortable since I'm pregnant, which can cause some gum sensitivity that I don't normally have, and it's been a while since my last dental appointment. That being said, this was hands down the worst cleaning I've ever had. There were some minor annoyances- for example, the appointment started 25 minutes late, Judy was awfully chatty and didn't seem to pick up on my cues that I wanted to get down to business instead of having a conversation, and she even kept asking me questions while she had her hands and tools in my mouth. That was all irritating, but at the end of the day, not a huge deal. It was Judy's level of skill that was the real problem. I had to keep my head turned sharply to the right the entire exam so she could see into my mouth, which was pretty uncomfortable for a 30-minute session, and because of that strange angle, the suction hose barely worked and I was drooling all over the place the entire time. She used a water pick, which I've had plenty of times before, but it felt like she was using it to actively gouge my gums. There were a few times where I physically winced or yelped and she didn't seem to notice or care, so I actually had to ask her to stop and be more gentle. Instead of just apologizing, she got very defensive and started telling me that the problem was how I was brushing, the type of toothpaste I was using, and that I was grinding my teeth in my sleep (this just a few moments after she looked in my mouth for the first time and said what good teeth I have). I have pretty darned good dental hygiene- I'm meticulous about brushing and flossing, I've never had so much as a single cavity, and I've never had a dentist or anyone else tell me I grind my teeth- but let's assume that she was correct for the sake of argument. ALL of those things put together still would not have resulted in the pain I was experiencing. It was what she was doing with her hands and tools. To her credit, after my initial complaint and Judy's first defensive outburst, she did try to make adjustments. She turned down the water level of the pick and I do believe she tried to work more carefully, but I'm sorry to say it didn't make a huge difference. She's just got an aggressive touch. Maybe some people are fine with that, but I found it awful start to finish. To add insult to injury, she continued to lecture me on my oral care all the way out the door. At no point did she consider that maybe the problem was HER methods. Dr. Saggese may be a lovely and qualified dentist- I don't know, I didn't work with him- but if you're looking for a basic cleaning, I suggest you go elsewhere. read more

WOW!! Amazing, kind & caring master of his craft dentist. I found him on Yelp. Dr. Saggese, has soft hands of gold and he has been very patient with me and my mother. I have come to him for cleanings and cavities, he has assisted my mother with cleanings as well. I would definitely recommend him to any one looking for a kind, patient dentist in NYC, he is definitely worth traveling to. Dr Saggese bought this practice over a year ago from my previous dentist so I'm a "grandfathered" patient. Let me tell you, he is a very good dentist. However along with his new practice, he brought new staff, and the main person doing the appointments is the worst receptionist possible. I keep asking her to help with my insurance questions, she says the insurance had this problem, that problem, I don't know, but let me call back, never calls, then calls to ask my husband to come for a cleaning, but what about me, I ask...oh yes I forgot, I'll call you back, never calls... this has been happening for over a year. She also mumbles and I can hardly hear her. I am so tired of it. The doctor should have better judgment than to have an inarticulate, ineffective person setting up his appointments. This hygienist is really weird (a white old lady). I did full-month X-ray last time (6 months ago) and she asked me to do it again this time. I was just friendly asking whether it is necessary since I did 6 months ago and she started to lose her temper. She started to talk about who cares and whatever, and even somehow talked about she supported Trump's some decisions. I don't care who you support but why it's necessary to bring up political opinion at a doctor's office? Then she carelessly cleaned my teeth and used the tools to purposefully damaged my gums (just like swinging knives). It bleed a lot. When I got home I found a few spots are not even cleaned. The doctor himself seems nice but I really can't give more than one star based on how the hygienist treated the patient. read more

My experience with Dr. Saggese was excellent. He was friendly, professional, and careful to explain not only what he was doing during the procedures but his reasons and rationale for doing so. I was seen quickly and he clearly respected the value of my time. He and his assistants were always considerate of any discomfort I may have felt and did everything they could to make the experience as stress-free as possible. Unfortunately I had a terrible experience with the Doc. Saggese Studio. I went for a teeth cleaning with a coupon bought on Groupon. I've done this thing other times and I never complained. This time I have to say that Doctor Saggese offered me a very unprofessional, superficial and hurried service. They barely did their job and left me going away without even offering some water to clean my mouth. I had to ask him to times to rework on what he was doing and him and his assistant have been pretty rude after that. The lady at the front desk has been very nice and understanding and gave me a nice welcome at the beginning. I don't recommend this dentist. read more

I went to Dr. Saggese for ~2 years (~4 semi-annual visits, nothing out of the ordinary). He and his staff do a good job with the teeth cleaning and their rates are fair. The office is also fairly close to a few subway lines which makes getting there easier. Issues: -Scheduling appointments is really tough. They are only open Monday - Thursday and I think one Saturday a month, so if you can't get out of work in the middle of the day that one Saturday ends up being your only option. They also seem to have a lot of last minute re-schedulings. I understand this happens from time to time, but I once had this happen to me four times in a row...I ended up being months overdue for an appointment by the time I actually got my teeth cleaned. -Dr Saggese's office does dental x-rays every six months. While I've heard from other doctors I've spoken with that this can be merited if the patient has a history of dental issues, it shouldn't be the norm if there's no special reason for it. The harmful effects of radiation are cumulative and I don't like being irradiated more often than is necessary. I was shot down when bringing up this point to the staff, and got the sense this is a supplementary revenue source for the group. I also wish they had a lead thyroid collar to protect the thyroid gland from radiation when doing the x-rays. In summary it's not a bad dental office, but just be aware of those issues. read more

Honestly, I'm someone who gets really nervous about visiting the dentist but Dr. Saggese is just the best shop in town. Scheduling is a breeze, super flexible, staff is friendly, service is impeccable, atmosphere is the most professional I've seen, and the office is comfortable and relaxing. Its possible I don't go to the dentist as much as I should but I visit Dr. Paolo, I can't remember why I put it off. Look, seriously, I'm not going to go too far into it, but in my line of work, I spend a lot of time with absolute scumbags, just the worst backwash of humanity, the kind of troglodytes who put on a tie but still ride really really long skateboards to work. Just garbage. I bring this up because the sick feeling in my stomach about humanity shouldn't be compounded by a sick feeling about going to the dentist and, for the first time in my life, I actually look forward to getting my teeth cleaned. I found Dr. Saggese on Groupon (I don't have dental insurance). My appointment was 5:30 PM on a Thursday, and I was seen almost immediately. The staff was friendly and welcoming - such great customer service :-) The hygienist was really sweet, and even though I have such high anxiety when it comes to the dentist, she made me feel comfortable. Dr Saggese was super nice, gave me some good advice and happily answered all of my questions. Definitely recommend this place - I'll be back! read more

Dr. Saggese himself is very nice and thorough. I appreciated that explained everything during my cleaning. He answered all my questions. He was friendly, and not at all pushy. However, his office staff are another story. I called on a Wednesday and made an appointment for the following Tuesday. I arrive that Tuesday to find the office is closed. I left messages and eventually the office manager called me back. The receptionist had not actually booked my appointment. I made an appointment for the next day, a Wednesday. I called that morning to confirm it and it had been put in the calendar for Thursday. I managed to get a Wednesday appointment. I went to Dr. Saggese's office and his receptionist was extremely s-l-o-w. It was 100F outside and I asked if there was any water. "No." After I was seen, the hygienists did not speak to me. They did not respond to "hello" or my casual comment "hot outside, huh?" Basic small talk, let alone a standard greeting, seemed impossible for them to make. Again I asked for water and this time was given it, in silence. What kind of place is this that a hygienist cannot even say hello? TL;DR: Dr. Saggese is a nice, thorough dentist but his office staff are a mess. read more

I was directed to Dr. Saggese from a mutual friend, and I couldn't be more happy with this decision! I was met with a very friendly face behind reception, who was extremely helpful...adding to that, there was minimal wait time. When I finally went back to be seen, the dental assistant was very personable & comforting. I saw the doctor within minutes are getting in the chair. He was extremely professional & efficient with time. Like his staff, Dr. Saggese is also kind, unbelievably friendly and couldn't have me made feel more comfortable or at ease during my appointment. Dr. Saggese took me in for an emergency root canal. I had never met him before but read great reviews on zocdoc so I figured why not give him a try. THANK GOD I did. He helped be with the root canal and explained what had happened to the tooth throughout the entire process. He got the pain to go away and set me up on the right meds to stop the infection. I saw Dr. Saggese a year ago and am still upset, so I've decided to write a review. Aside from an exceptionally long wait time and a dirty office with old/broken equipment, Dr. Saggese told me that I had five cavities. I had never had a cavity or any dental work done before, I had no discomfort and was simply there for a cleaning. They immediately tried to schedule time for fillings and follow-up procedures, when I decided that a second opinion would be necessary. I have since had a second opinion with x-rays and today had another regular cleaning appointment with a different doctor. Still cavity-free one whole year later! I was a broke graduate student and do not appreciate the tactics of this office to make a buck with unwarranted "fillings". I should have known when I checked in, there was a woman crying and pleading over the bills at the front desk. It breaks my heart and I am so glad I sought another dentist. Please stay away! read more
