It was my first time trying this restaurant so I try to go with the basic items like chicken chow main, BBQ pork fried rice and vegetable beef. I even tried their homemade potstickers. I wasn't overly thrilled about the meal I ordered. The rice had an spoiled taste to it in some bites I took, it was sticky and clumped together unlike fresh fried rice. The chicken chow mein and mix vegetables beef tasted just on, pretty much average. The homemade potstickers was very different almost like a pork bun with a thick doughy outer shell instead of the thin wrap. I love a small business who aims to provide service that makes the community feel connected. Papa Chen definitely deserves credit for that. The ambiance of their space is quaint--cozy, small and usually busy with patrons. The food, however, is where the whole appeal falls apart for me. After resisting their food for over year, I placed a sizable order with Hot & Sour Soup, Sweet & Sour Tofu, Veggie Fried Rice and Veggie Chow Mein. The Hot & Sour soup had pieces of what seems like beef in it--so that was already a big miss. I'm comfortable with beef infused stock, but chunks of meat in the hot and sour soup? Come on -- nope. Total miss. The Rice and Chow Mein had no real flavor to ground them. They tasted empty and somewhat irreverent of care or skill. The sweet & sour tofu was the biggest offender. Tofu should be strained/dried out before it's battered, fried and dressed up with sauce--otherwise it just turns into a slimy deconstructed mess. That was the case here. The flavor wasn't bad, but the texture and cohesiveness of the dish was a huge miss. If you can't put Panda Express to shame -- or compete with the "cheap but tasty" Chinese spots all over the Bay Area (take Red Jade in San Francisco for example) -- while charging the kind of price this place does, you have completely lost me as a customer. I can make better Chinese food--and given the slim options around Antioch, that is a better bang for your buck than placing your hope in Papa Chen. Wish I could have loved them. I had huge hopes for this place given the many good reviews and was excited. It fell short. These were the same people that owned Lucky Chen's and I gave them a better rating years ago. First, and I should have left at that point but I had already paid, the cooks were NOT wearing masks! There were 6 employees, 5 in the crowded kitchen area. With Covid cases rising at its highest levels, this is not good. The cashier and the girl working in the dining area wore masks. Rest were not and one had it but wearing it wrong with the nose out of the mask! Broccoli chicken had a definite fishy/shrimp taste and I suspect they didn't wash out the pan and cooked it in the same pan. So tasted terrible and usually one of my go-to dishes elsewhere plus the issue of cross-contamination for shellfish allergies for some people! Not good all the way around! From other reviews, I thought egg rolls would be good, but it was the usual mostly cabbage and a few shreds of carrots. Find the place with vermicelli noodles and black mushrooms mixed with veg and you will find the good egg roll. This was just ok- at least freshly made but again just cabbage/carrots and nothing else. Potstickers- thick wrappers, perfectly fried bottom but filling was just ok. Did not really like their bbq spareribs- meh. General Tsou's chicken- soggy by the time I got home, so soggy wet instead of crunchy. It was ok otherwise. Basically everything had no distinguishable flavor-bland and like it was just hurried to cook. Disappointing food and I know my Chinese food as that is the main cuisine I cook and grew up with. Our go-to food here are always on point: Peking ribs and salt & pepper fish filet. They are located at a shopping mall with lots of other food choices. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a call from the driver that he was at my workplace! I was very impress with the punctuality of Papa Chen's and the driver! I really appreciated that! By the way the driver was super nice! I ordered prawns with snow peas, chicken broccoli, pork shumai, shrimp dumpling and sesame seed ball. My order came with a free chicken fried rice since my order was over $30! The food was fresh and delicious. My prawns and snowpeas has so much prawns and variety of vegetables such as snowpeas, mushrooms, carrots, zucchini and bamboo shoots that I all loved! The chicken broccoli was nicely flavored(not salty) and the broccoli was not undercooked, but just right. The fried rice was also delicious! As far as the shoMai and dumpling, I would recommend to maybe order somewhere else, unless you are definitely craving for some sho Mai then this place will suffice the cravings. Scrumptious, fresh, and filling! I was surprised by how well made and seasoned the food is! Potstickers are handmade and full of yummy filling. The string bean chicken had a unique flavor, but were delicious. The chicken chow mien was not overcooked or soggy and the chicken was flavorful. Broccoli beef, super light and well cooked! My bff and I have kept with tradition and celebrated NYE and Day with each other and our families for 14+ years. Every year I have cooked a big feast as the running joke is we eat like Kings and Queens to end the year and welcome the new. Then she decorates and we pop apple cider and have the kids drink out of champagne flutes. Buy a bunch of poppers, etc and we party until well after midnight. The kids definitely look forward to this time of year and have grown accustomed to our tradition. This year, the bff and I were extremely excited as this year NYE fell on a Friday which meant we had that day off. Only it didn't pan out the way we envisioned. We both ended up working most of the day. Then my first grandchild was due to be born Jan. 1 so it added another layer of stress on top of it all. So after some discussion the bff and I decided after years of cooking I would order take out. I was crushed. I just knew the kids would feel the change and I hated everything about the idea. So onto Yelp I went and found this place. There were some decent reviews. Photos of the food looked delicious. Lots of stuff to order off the menu. So I called to make sure they were even open and their hours of operation on NYE. Luckily they were running regular business hours. Also asked how much in advance would I need to call in to make a large order. Was told the day before was fine. I ordered about $270 worth of food. I'm used to large containers of food when I order from our usual chinese restaurants and for the price I paid I thought it would be more. I even told the person on the phone how many people I was feeding and was told I had enough food. When I went to pick up it came in one box and each item was in what looked like meal prep containers, indvidual meal prep containers. So you can imagine how small the containers were. Had the lady told me I hadn't ordered enough food I would have gladly ordered more. Grant it I know how I cook and when I cook not only can you invite extra guests to dinner but everyone is taking 2 days worth of to-go's. Wasn't expecting that but also wasn't expecting the servings we were given for how much was spent. Quality of food was ok. Nothing stood out. Seeing the grand opening sign and having been open only one week, we decided to try out the new restaurant for our Sunday lunch... we ordered bbq pork with bean curd ($6.95) and mongolian beef ($7.15) off the lunch special. Soup of the day was included (hot and sour), and a salad that had fried won ton strips and a mayo- vinegar- sugar based salad dressing. The salad was different and the crunchy won ton strips added a great texture. I thought the prices were very reasonable, and being able to order it on the weekends was a nice bonus. Both dishes were very tasty, and the bean curd (soft tofu) was very fresh. Other lunch entrees ranged from $6.95 to $7.95. Staff was friendly, and we met the owner, as he came around to the tables to chat. Yes, it is a super small restaurant, with only 4 tables inside, but there are some outdoor tables too. Can't wait to try some of their other dishes and their dim sum... give them a try! They are located near the Home Depot, but in the strip shopping center, near Cre Asian, one of our other favorite asian restaurants. Their service was pretty friendly, but you can tell that they're not ready for their opening week. It seems like they're not all together yet. Hopefully they can get the stuff together. We visited during lunch so we took advantage of they lunch menu. My husband ordered the Mongolian beef with fried rice. I opted for the honey walnut prawns with fried rice. The lunch entrees came with salad and soup. The salad was lettuce with a whole lot of crunchies. The soup was hot and sour soup. We also got shu mai. The food was pretty basic, nothing spectacular. We usually go to Silver Lake in Oakley but we have been to all places in the Brentwood area. Today was Papa Chens turn. Sesame chicken was just okay, large portion but we only got this because it came free with our order, we dont usually order any chicken dishes. It was okay, just needs some kind of sauce, too dry. Broccoli beef was also just okay, beef too chewy for my liking and I dont want mushrooms or garlic in my broccoli beef. Garlic overpowered all the other flavors and mushrooms just do not belong in broccoli beef. Broccoli though was cooked softer like I like it. Honey walnut shrimp was delicious! Singapore noodles, Hubby said were great, I dont eat them. Beef chow fun was just okay, I dont like the thin noodles as much and it wasnt enough smoky flavor for me. Hong kong style beef pan fried noodles is a favorite dish of mine and these were pretty good just again with the mushrooms. I purposely didnt get house noodles so I wouldnt have all that other mess in there but that didnt work. Potstickers or fried dumplings were fat and full of meat but I was disappointed they gave us a packet of sauce instead of making their own. I did try the packaged sauce and it wasn't good at all, very gingery which I dont like. They were good but a great sauce would make them fantastic! I am undecided if we will go back, maybe for the pan fried noodles cause our regular place doesnt have them and the potstickers but not for the broccoli beef. Also, avoid the Thai ice tea w/boba. A Thai ice tea is usually made with condensed milk, but Papa Chen used regular milk in the drink we ordered yesterday.
