    two slices of pizza

Its chain pizza, and they screwed over a bunch of people with their closings years ago. Occasionally, they'll have these 20 or 40% off deals and I'll hit them up, but otherwise there isn't anything to see here. Food is only ok, and overall not really worth it.

I haven't ordered from Papa Gino's in forever and last night my husband and I called in for a small cheese pizza with olives. The operator told us 30 minutes but the pizza arrived a lot earlier with no contact delivery. After opening the box, half the pizza's contents were slid to the other side making it a big mess. We called the restaurant back and one of the employees suggested they make another pizza. The second pizza was delivered fast and had no issues. Everything about the pizza was good but nothing special. It definitely beats the other pizza delivery chain restaurants out there though (cough Domino's and Papa John's*)! Next time I order from here, I would ask for thin crust. Overall, good pizza and good customer service.

During this time of Covid, we have been in quarantine quite a bit in order to visit out of state family to help them out, keep them company, make sure they are doing well. We are not usually a 'delivery' sort of family, but for some reason, pizza is the exception and Papa Gino's is right around the corner and we've been getting delivery from them quite a bit over the past year. In the beginning, it was just pizza. I love the cheese. Plain and simple. As time has gone by we've added pepperoni, veg, steak sandwiches and salads to our repertoire. Their steak sandwich is good. We load it up with all the stuff, peppers, onions, mushroom and cheese. You can get it with any combination of those items, so if your not a fan, it's easy to change it up. I use their online portal to order and accrue points toward free pizza, and they even gave me one free cheese pizza during my birth month. That was a pretty sweet deal. There are also usually coupons on the internet if you do a search. We still tip on the original dollar amount, but it's nice to save a few dollars where you can. We always leave a note in the delivery section of the ordering app that we are in a quarantine and to please ring the bell and leave the order on the steps. It is usually highlighted so the driver sees it, and only once did we have a driver wait at the door to hand deliver it. We're not actually ill, so it was no harm done to the driver, we are just taking extra precautions to assure our older and immune compromised family members have no fear when we come to stay. Still, we really appreciate that 99.9% of the time, the drivers have all complied with the request and that one driver was clearly just unaware and was super sweet. All our orders have been delivered hot, all the items requested were in the bags/boxes and the one time we had an issue (no salad dressing maybe, it was a while ago) they sent someone out with the missing item and made it good in about 10 minutes! (I did mention they are just around the corner). So all in all they have really been a help to us during this past year of multiple quarantines. Some days you just don't want to cook! It's nice to know Papa's got ya back.

I was…read morein the marching band, if that explains anything But with the Pats first playoff win, Cowesett Pizza was offering a special through today - one topping bar pie for $12. They also had a deal on a regular one topping for $10 but I made the trek from the office in Milford MA all the way to West Warwick instead of home today. I was a woman on a mission. I came in and took a seat at the bar. I had been here once before so I knew that the place was small but clean and bright inside. I ordered a beer and my pizza, then sat back and waited. The staff worked like a well oiled machine pumping out food and taking care of every customer with ease After a while, my beautiful baby landed right in front of me. I chose cherry peppers as my one topping, wanting the heat and vinegar taste. I was hungry so I immediately dug in. The crust was crispy but gave way when I bit into it. The sauce and cheese together were salty, savory and sharp. The beer was a good choice to have with this pizza for sure. The lacy crunchy edges were fantastic, the cooked down cheese having a taste I can only describe as similar to extra crispy bacon. Awesome. Before I left I snagged a slice of the Dubai Chocolate Cheesecake by The Side Slice who sells incredible cheesecakes thru preorder on his page or you can find a rotation of slices in the Cowesett cooler. I waited until I got home to enjoy this wonderful dessert: chocolate cake base, filled with pistachio cheesecake, topped with a thick layer of pistachio kaitafi, covered in chocolate fudge frosting, pistachio whipped cream, and chopped pistachios. The bite was divine. I cut off another bite and ate each layer individually, such different but wonderful textures and flavors. I managed to stop halfway through the slice to save the rest for tomorrow but I will be thinking about that cheesecake as much as I'll be thinking about that bar pie. So if you haven't made the detour off Route 2 to have some pizza and cheesecake, you need to fix that asap. And sorry to all those who missed out on this deal, because I had a three course meal for $27 with leftovers for at least two more meals. Thanks so much!

Would definitely order again!

The reputation arrives first…read more Walk into Frank Pepe's on Universal Boulevard in Warwick, and a hundred years of reputation walks in with you. The original is on Wooster Street in New Haven. It opened in 1925. Frank Pepe was a 32-year-old Italian immigrant from the Amalfi coast who had been selling pies from a hat, carrying them on his head through the neighborhood market to feed factory workers who needed something hot and good and cheap. He saved enough to open a real restaurant. He built an oven. The oven stayed put for over 100 years, because you do not move a hundred thousand pounds of brick. His nickname was Old Reliable. That history is sitting at the table with you whether you know it or not. The Warwick location lit its coal-fired oven in the spring of 2018. Seven years of continuous heat. The bricks are absorbing it slowly, not all at once but building. You can taste what they share with the original, which is the part that matters. We ordered the tomato pie with meatballs. This is the right call at Pepe's and I am not apologizing for it. The tomato pie is where the place began. Two items on the original 1925 menu: tomato pie and tomato pie with anchovies. No mozzarella because there was no refrigeration. Constraint became tradition the way it always does, faster than philosophy ever manages. At Pepe's, mozzarella is optional. Pecorino and the tomatoes and the crust are the baseline, and the baseline is the argument. The sauce is crushed Italian tomatoes. That description undersells it. The sauce at Pepe's has been refined for a century to carry a pie without a cheese safety net, which means it has to be bright and acidic and complex enough to hold its own against char and dough and whatever is riding on top of it. The meatballs were sliced thin across the tomatoes and seasoned all the way to the center. That is rarer than it should be. Then there is the crust. The coal-fired oven runs somewhere above 650 degrees. The char on the edge is not decorative. It contributes a bitterness that cuts right through the acid in the tomatoes. They need each other. The leopard spots across the bottom of the pie tell you the heat and the timing were right. The crispness is structural. The chew underneath it is real. We also ordered the grilled chicken pie. Yes. At Frank Pepe's. The room has opinions and the room can have them. What I did not expect was for the chicken to be a genuine star. Not pulled, not scattered, not the afterthought that grilled chicken usually is on pizza. These were proper chunks, with intentional size, juicy in a way that should not survive a 650-degree coal oven but somehow did. Substantial. The kind of protein that makes you feel good, even though it's on a pizza. When I eat it, I feel like I'm taking vitamins. It tastes healthy. There is a lot of it. It is delicious. These three things rarely show up together on a pizza and Frank Pepe's managed all three without making it feel virtuous in the annoying way. It felt like a reward. Frank Pepe's in Warwick is not the original. Nothing will ever be the original. The original is on Wooster Street in a city that built its identity around this particular pizza and has been arguing about it for a hundred years. What the Warwick location is, is an honest attempt to bring the New Haven style here. The coal is real. The oven is real. The sauce is the sauce. The crust is the crust. Seven years of heat in those bricks doing the work that oven was built to do. Great room. Great service. Really great pizza. Old Reliable.

There was a wait of about 20 minutes and the wait for the pizza would have been another 30. There were about 2 waiters walking around that seemed slammed. I ended up leaving and returning later that night. I took the advice of one of the patrons from earlier and ordered online. I ordered a medium pizza with Pepperoni, Sausage and Bacon for $38!!!! When we arrived the pizza was ready so we sat down and ate as there was hardly anyone there the second time around closer to 9pm. The waitress was extremely nice. The pizza is beyond basic and I was highly disappointed. The pizza was unevenly cut and the toppings all just fell off the pizza. I needed a fork to eat the pizza. Sadly they didn't have any knives. The bacon was nonexistent. I couldn't believe I just wasted $40 on a circle of soup. I won't be returning. This place just isn't for me.

In addition to their hand tossed pizza, they make Detroit style here, and they make it correctly. The sauce goes on top after the cheese, the way it's supposed to be. Flip a slice and look at the bottom: deep amber gold, wall to wall, the kind of color that takes a well-oiled pan and real heat and no shortcuts. The inside of the crust pulls apart in layers. I ordered half pepperoni, half grilled chicken. The pepperoni did what pepperoni does you know the drill. The chicken is what you need to know about. Big chunks, marinated, substantial in a way that most pizza chicken has no clue about. Not the pale, dried-out afterthought that shows up on a lot of pies when someone tries to do something other than sausage or pepperoni. This was the kind of chicken that makes you stop mid-slice and reconsider whether you should have ordered a whole chicken pie. I didn't expect to reach a verdict this fast. This is as good as any Detroit pizza I've found anywhere in the state. It's a strip mall but don't judge the book by its cover, order the Detroit, get the chicken.
