I recently asked Josh at Papillon to clean three thick-pile wool area rugs for me and also to re-size one of the rugs. I received my cleaned rugs today and I couldn't recommend Papillon more highly on all counts. They did a wonderful job with my rugs (which hadn't been cleaned in years). I was considering purchasing a rug that had some visible flaws (wrinkles and lumps), and I contacted them to see if the flaws could be fixed by cleaning. They got back to me immediately with their expert input, giving me information on the rug that I didn't know (that it was Afghan, not Turkish) and telling me that it was unlikely they'd be able to correct the flaws I was concerned about. We have two kids and a small condo in San Francisco and we had not had our rugs cleaned in almost 5 years. I have used these folks three times now to clean my rugs, most recently in 2022. They still provide great service. The cost has increased, nearly to the cost of the rugs themselves in my case, but they give you a quote ahead of time and stick to it, so decide for yourself what you are willing to pay. They were responsive to my questions on the phone about pricing, care and different repair services when I called to inquire. When I brought my rug in, they were kind and efficient. They do a standard charge of l 60% down upon drop off and take about 2-3 weeks to clean rugs. They were right on time and finished with my rug in about 2.5 weeks and promptly called me for pick up. There seems to be a mother and son who attend the shop and both have kind and helpful demeanors. After having a poor experience with COIT, we decided to use Papillon and were thrilled with our decision. We needed to clean some large, heavy Chinese rugs in our home. Papillon scheduled a pick-up window of 30 minutes -- and they showed up promptly within this window. We didn't waste any time waiting around for pick up (like we did with COIT). The rugs themselves were cleaned well and Papillon kept in touch with us throughout the process through phone and email (to let us know when the items were cleaned and arrange a drop-off). They were also extremely honest and sincere. One of our antique rugs (ruined by our dogs) would have been extremely expensive to repair, and they were upfront about the costs and told us it might not be worth it. My rugs come back perfect (which can be a gamble when sending out vintage/antique pieces) and the service is extremely friendly and super helpful. Additionally, I found a moth infestation in my closet - the source of which was two stored rugs. Had my father's office rug cleaned here in September, 2020. It looked awful when i brought it in. The foam mat under the rug had begun deteriorating and was shedding little foam particle everywhere. One end of the rug was unraveling and looked really bad too. Dad wanted to keep the cost down so, they just trimmed the unravelled bits rather than reweaving it. I had several rugs cleaned there, most of them Persian or Afghani wool and some Chinese silk carpets. PROS - 1) They did a good job, and made sure the natural dyes didn't run (not easy!!) :) 2) They will pick up and deliver. 3) The owner is vivacious and pleasant to work with. CONS 1) There was one carpet that came back with a stain even darker than before. Granted, the owner had said that they couldn't guarantee removal of stains, but it was still disappointing. 2) They misplaced a valuable rug for at least a week. I'm not exactly sure how long it was, because I'd tried to call a few times about it and didn't get a return call. When I finally did, there was an admission that it couldn't be found b/c the tag must've fallen off. It required a picture and detailed description, but they did find it. 3) One carpet had to be washed several times; they called to let me know, but didn't say that it would be muuuch more expensive. Unpleasant surprise when I saw the bill. I would likely still use Papillon because the carpets DO look lovely afterward, but.... will take take precautions beforehand. read more

Well, this is a perfect example of the benefits of Yelp.com. For years I took my Mid-Century Wool Shag rug to whoever was cheapest and the rug really paid the price. I nearly destroyed it. The colors bled, I lost around 4 inches around the perimeter to unraveling over the years, and the backing deteriorated. It was quite literally falling apart at the seams. This rug is very rare, valuable, and special to me. So was it a lost cause? Was it ruined? I needed to know and make a tough decision about whether to spend the $$$ to repair it (if possible) or to just toss it. But it is an amazing work of art, this rug, a real one of a kind, signed by the artist in 1959... So Yelpers pointed the way to Papillon Rug Care and I stopped by for a visit. Yes, it was in bad shape. A challenge for them, but they took it on at a very fair price. They called me each step of the way with recommendations and prices and each time I decided to go ahead and pay for the extra repair cost because I could tell they were very knowledgeable and conscientious. It took a very long time with my rug, but I didn't mind because I knew they were being careful and working hard at it. So last week I went to pick up my poor old rug and OO MM GG it is like new! Like a brand new rug! It is bright white and all the colors are bright and vibrant! They not only put a new backing on it, they hand sewed an additional layer of cotton muslin to the back as an extra protection. They hand sewed a cotton banding around the perimeter and the color of it matched the white part of the rug so it looks very, very nice. The only problem is now that it is so nice, I almost don't want to unroll it in my home and walk all over it again. I am going to store it until I have a new place where I can treat it as it should be treated. I now have this piece of art that I will keep and enjoy forever. Thank you so much Papillon Rug Care! After waiting around two days for Coit to not show up, I got fed up, searched Yelp and called Papillon. They came and picked up my kitchen rug within a couple of hours. The rug was returned 10 days later looking like new. I had previously has the carpet cleaned twice by Coit -- each time it came back with spots which I assumed were not possible to remove. Papillon got them ALL out. I was starting to think it was time to replace the rug; turned out it was time to replace the rug cleaner. My rug was a machine made basic rug for our kitchen, but I would not hesitate to use them for something much nicer based on their results with this one. Price was the same as I have paid for Coit. Ok, this time we thought our rug was done for. Four years after its last cleaning, it suffered numerous indescribable offenses from our pets. I frankly did not want to spend any more money to clean it, but decided to see if Papillon could work some more magic. Papillon miraculously made it new AGAIN. I don't know how they do it. And to boot, they miscalculated the estimate based on the material of the rug, in our favor, and honored the quoted price no questions asked/no attempts to charge what they should have. Gone is the free pick-up/drop-off, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to the quality of work done here. And I'm fairly certain the rates for cleaning have not changed since our last job in 2009. Unreal. There's simply no reason to get your rug professionally cleaned anywhere else. Period. read more

Love these guys - like all the other reviews have stated, they are the real deal. The rugs come back spotless, and they always give me a health check on the rug as well and let me know if it's threadbare, etc. Plus the pickup is key for me. My only complaint is related to their hours.... it's not very realistic to expect to be able to drag a rug in between the hours of 10am and 5pm, which is when I'm in the office. Fortunately, their pick up/drop off service makes up for that. read more

Papillon cleaned and repaired two 9 x 12 carpets for me. One old carpet was being used in the drop-off area of a small warehouse and took a lot of abusive foot & hand truck traffic, it was pretty dirty, stained and ratty! To my surprise, they estimated that carpet to be around 150 years old! The second carpet was about 75 years old from my parent's place. That one was as bad as the "warehouse carpet." They hand-washed & repaired and re-fringed both carpets... bringing out the colors and beauty that was hidden by the years of dirt, stains & grime. The only thing they couldn't repair was the slight impression left by my parent's hot clothes iron. Papillon did such a nice job, I gave the first carpet to my son & his wife when they married and bought a house. It's the centerpiece of their living room. My parent's carpet was so clean and repaired, my mother actually thought we bought her a new carpet! Surprise Mom!... see, it's your old/new carpet... recognize the iron impression?? We had a third smaller newer carpet which my wife TOOK TO ANOTHER PLACE that said they knew how to do carpets. Boy! Was she disappointed! The colors were faded, uneven and merged in some areas. My parents had some old vintage rugs that they were getting ready to toss and buy new ones. The rugs have been in use for 40+ years by my parents and it was a tough decision for them to decide to toss them out since it had a lot of sentimental value. WOW ! Yelp works! I never thought I could get my older burgundy lambskin rug back to as bright and soft as it was when I first bought it several years ago. I had tried cleaning it a few years ago and I did not notice a difference. After Papillon cleaned it, I was SO happy I didn't have to buy a new rug, and it came out like it was brand new. Top notch oriental carpet cleaning. Fair price and trustworthy job.

We bought our area rug years ago, picking it up from Macy's the day before our first son was born. In fact, the rug was in our car trunk when we went to the hospital. Flashforward twelve years, two cats, and two more kids later when we finally decide to have the rug cleaned. I wasn't that worried about the rug itself since it's not the antique hand knotted rug my parents brought home from a trip abroad. However, it is a big rug, and I had no idea how much it was going to cost. Also, the fringes on either end were in horrible condition, and I wondered if they were worth repair. I called Papillon because of the all the positive Yelp reviews and got an immediate response after I left a message. I brought the rug over myself since it does fit in my car. I had the fringe removed and the rug edges bound to match (on their recommendation). It's back cleaned on our livingroom floor, and it looks FANTASTIC. Pricing was reasonable for all the work they had done. I will likely have them take a look at the antique. read more

Not cheap, but worth it. Showed up exactly on time, a refreshing change from another place who told me they were doing me a favor if they were only an hour late. Knowledgeable. Did not try to upsell me for a damaged fringe. Instead they said it looked pretty good, and they recommended waiting until it wore out a bit more. They held my rugs an extra week, as my floor was being replaced, no problem. Prompt on time delivery, they even vacuumed the area before unrolling the rugs.
